The Amazing Race 13 Episode 8

Kelly & Christy finally got off my screen in The Amazing Race 13 Episode 7. Not far ahead of them were Andrew & Dan, who by some miracle keep just barely surviving in second to last every week. Meanwhile, Nick & Starr continued their dominance with another first place finish.

60 Minutes looks like it’s about half an hour late. A live recap will begin when 60 Minutes concludes.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Nick & Starr – 10:14PM
Second: Toni & Dallas – 10:24PM
Third: Terence & Sarah – 10:43PM
Fourth: Ken & Tina – 11:48PM
Fifth: Andrew & Dan – 12:00AM

Nick’s wondering when someone will finally blow past them. Starr and Dallas are just wondering when they’ll be left alone so they can work on getting a room. Hormones aside, they work together at the travel agency to book a flight that should get them ahead of everybody else.

Terence wants to be a big bundle of nerves, while Sarah hopes to be able to relax. Ken & Tina (still) know they need to communicate.

Teams will fly to Almaty, Kazakhstan, a new location for the race, following closely on the heels of Borat. The first destination when they land is a chicken factory. Ken & Tina somehow manage to get on the first flight, though the team that left an hour before them is searching around the airport to see what their options are. Terence & Sarah end up about an hour and a half behind. It’s unclear how far behind Andrew & Dan are, but considering the second flight lands at 1:20AM, this is an hours of operation bunching waiting to happen.

First flight: Nick & Starr, Toni & Dallas, Ken & Tina
Second flight: Terence & Sarah
Third flight: Andrew & Dan

They arrive at the chicken factory and find out it’s not opening until 7:30. Lucky thing they were so bunched up because Dan & Andrew were hours behind. All teams are even for the road block.

The road block is to enter a chicken shack and search among 30,000 chickens for one of seven golden eggs. That’s not all, though. It’s fast forward time. The fast forward is to join in a feast where the main ingredient is the fat from the rear end of a sheep. Nick & Starr and Terence & Sarah both go dashing for the fast forward. Don’t do it. One of these teams is better off swallowing their pride and letting the other do it. If you lose out on this, you’re just asking to be last. On top of the fact that fast forwards are pretty unpredictable. Sarah tells Terence she doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but he doesn’t listen.

Nick & Starr arrive slightly before Terence & Sarah, but unfortunately for them it’s not first come first served like the previous fast forward was. Whoever eats the food first will win the fast forward. And whoever doesn’t win the fast forward will be in for a world of hurt. Starr doesn’t want to read the part of the menu that says what the food is. Terence is a vegetarian, who hasn’t eaten meat in over 15 years. Despite that, he’s just going to go for it, although he doesn’t actually seem to be eating anything. He shouldn’t have even bothered trying, and eventually realizes that he won’t be able to finish, reluctantly agreeing to quit. Now all Nick & Starr have to do is get the sheep’s butt down.

Road block: Andrew, Tina, Toni, Sarah

Teams will need to find and travel by crane truck to the Koktobe Arch in the mountains and look for a Mongol warrior, where their clue will be carried to them by bird. Andrew & Dan somehow get lost along the way, although the first two teams seem to have no trouble. I wonder: are they really that lost, or is this all manufactured for drama so we believe Terence & Sarah have a prayer? Apparently frustrated with the country as a whole, Dan starts yelling at Andrew for not keeping up with him.

The detour is a choice between play like mad or act like fools. In play like mad, they must learn to play a tune using two traditional instruments, then go to the park and earn $1.50 in tips. In act like fools, they must walk the streets dressed like cows to find a stall with milk for them to drink, then bring themselves to the butcher.

Act like fools: Toni & Dallas, Ken & Tina, Andrew & Dan, Terence & Sarah

Toni & Dallas decide to have fun with this. Tina drinks the milk but didn’t read the whole clue. Dallas also didn’t read the whole clue but does so immediately after finishing his milk. After asking for directions, Tina realizes she was indeed at the right place the first time, then they decide they need to take their cow costume back where they got it (rather than to the butcher like they’re supposed to). Dallas tells them they need their costume, but they try to go without it anyway. Then Tina wants to take a cab to the pit stop, but luckily Ken tells her they have to walk. Andrew & Dan both miss this part of the clue, though, and they grab a cab, so they need to go back and do it correctly.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Old Square, a public plaza in the oldest part of the city.

First: Nick & Starr
Second: Toni & Dallas
Third: Ken & Tina
Fourth: Andrew & Dan
Eliminated: Terence & Sarah

Terence & Sarah were one of the strongest teams and should have been in the final three, but they made a dumb decision (as did Nick & Starr) that it was pretty obvious they should not have made. As for Andrew & Dan, they’re past their expiration date.

The Amazing Race Asia 3 Episode 10

Their performance at the detour followed by being U-turned led to AD & Fuzzie being last in The Amazing Race Asia 3 Episode 9, but they were non-eliminated and lived to see another day.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Vince & Sam – 12:01AM
Second: Ida & Tania – 12:17AM
Third: Geoff & Tisha – 1:14AM
Fourth: AD & Fuzzie – 2:40AM

The next destination is Bhaja Caves, 60km outside of Pune. Based on the times, they’ll obviously hit an hours of operation. It opens at 8:15. This will give everybody a bit of time to rest but also makes sure they’re all together to begin the task.

Apparently, they came all the way out to the caves and hit an hours of operation only to be told they have to go back to Pune and go to the train station to see a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. As we’ve seen in prior seasons of TAR, these trains are jam packed, but it doesn’t seem too traumatic. In order to proceed, they need to know the year Mahatma Gandhi was born when they get to Standard Chartered Bank. Ida & Tania wrote down everything… except what they needed to know. AD & Fuzzie didn’t even go to the statue and instead went straight to the bank. Both of these teams just ask the locals, who know right away. Vince & Sam got the year the statue was put up rather than the year Gandhi was born, as did Geoff & Tisha. Vince & Sam found out the correct year from their taxi driver before arriving. This appears to be quite the simple question for the locals, as three teams didn’t even complete the task correctly but got the answer right anyway. Geoff & Tisha, however, entered an incorrect answer three times, insistent that Gandhi was born in 1977, which means they receive a 10 minute penalty.

From there, teams are told to go to Muscat, Oman. All teams get on the same flight from Pune via Mumbai, a journey of over 1700km.

The first stop in Oman is Al Alam Palace. The teams are warned to beware of wild animals, including camels, donkeys, and goats, while driving. Tish never drives a manual car (one of the fundamental skills needed for the race at some point or another) and just took lessons before leaving for the race.

After arriving at the palace, teams are told to drive 140km to Nizwa Fort. Hours of operation again, this time 7:00, which once again lets everybody catch up. There they must search multiple clue boxes for the right one. Fuzzie says she has no motivation but isn’t giving up, although it sounds like they already gave up last leg.

From there they will go to Mutrah Souq. Is it here that we’re finally going to see an actual task? Anticipating an intersection, Geoff & Tisha get a cab and split it with Vince & Sam. Both teams wish to continue working together on the detour.

The detour is a choice between carpet or count it. In carpet, teams must match a unique piece of the design on carpets with photos on their camera. In count it, teams must count the exact number of dried limes. Neither is a very appealing task, but counting tasks normally drive people mad.

Count it: Ida & Tania, Vince & Sam, AD & Fuzzie, Geoff & Tisha (switched from count it to carpet to count it to carpet to count it)

Ida & Tania guess incorrectly, and they’re followed by an incorrect guess by Vince & Sam. And then Geoff & Tisha. Geoff wants to switch tasks, but Tisha wants to give it another shot. I wouldn’t bother if it were me. Counting 1500 or 2000 of an object has been the downfall of many a team. He gets his way and they switch. Ida & Tania are incorrect the second time. AD & Fuzzie are wrong on their first try. Vince & Sam are wrong on their first try as well. Immediately upon arrival at the next detour, Tisha repeatedly tells Geoff it’s the wrong choice. This time she gets her way, and they switch back to counting. On their second guess, Vince & Sam are correct. They don’t bother telling their allies what answer they got. Geoff & Tisha’s second guess is incorrect. She agrees to switch back to the rugs. Hopefully this time she’ll make more of an effort at it instead of dismissing it as a bad idea. Ida & Tania are correct on their next guess, and it appears that the baskets don’t have the same number of limes, so the boys wouldn’t have been able to help Geoff & Tisha anyway. Oh, and by the way, Geoff & Tisha are on their way back to count again. AD & Fuzzie count incorrectly but just guess one lower and get it correct. Geoff & Tisha finally manage to finish the detour.

The next stop is Wadi Tanuf, two and a half hours away. Nobody is having any luck finding this place. The locals don’t seem to know where it is, the map doesn’t match the road and vice versa, and half of what they’re seeing isn’t in English anyway. Hopelessly lost Vince & Sam decide to follow hopelessly lost Ida & Tania. Geoff & Tisha eventually run into those teams, and they’re also lost. And then AD & Fuzzie run into everybody else. They all manage to find it together.

The road block is to tyrolean traverse across a canyon. Teams three and four must wait for the first two teams to finish.

Road block (in order of arrival): Sam, Ida, Geoff, Fuzzie

The pit stop for this leg of the race is nearby, and they will travel there on foot, meaning it all comes down to the road block placement. Ida makes it through the road block fairly quickly. Geoff flies through it in seemingly a matter of seconds. Sam eventually gives up and agrees to take a 4 hour penalty. Their only prayer now is that Fuzzie also gives up. Unsurprisingly, she quits as well.

First: Ida & Tania (win $2,500US each)
Second: Geoff & Tisha
Third: Vince & Sam
Eliminated: AD & Fuzzie

Vince & Sam lucked out, as they probably would have been eliminated against almost any other team. All things considered, AD & Fuzzie did quite well despite their lack of ability in physical challenges and ambling through the race, but it caught up with them eventually.

Survivor: Gabon Episode 9

The merge at 10 did not happen in Survivor: Gabon Episode 8. Instead, the tribes were shuffled (again). After her tribe spent time letting her know she was sixth of a six person alliance, Susie flipped and helped vote out Marcus.

Bob knows he’s gone if they don’t merge. Over on Fang, Matty’s not any more confident in his position in the game, and to add insult to injury, they can’t even get fire going to eat rice.

Corinne says that as long as Marcus, Charlie, and herself are intact, she doesn’t care who goes home. Well, then Jeff’s got bad news for her. She says he didn’t deserve to leave the game. On the other side of the coin, there’s Matty, grinning from ear to ear when he sees Marcus is toast.

Treemail’s a slingshot. That hardly looks merge related. The challenge is golf Survivor style (using slingshots). Corinne will sit out for Fang. Kota scores on the first hole. Fang ties it by scoring on the second hole. On the tiebreaking uphill hole, Fang scores again, thanks to Matty and no thanks to Randy’s control freakness, to win reward. In celebration of their win, Randy continues to argue with Matty that he didn’t do (the winning shot) right. Bob will be going to Exile, so at least it’s not Sugar for a change. Reward is a visit to a local tribe for a feast and dancing.

Matty tells his tribe he was stoked to see Marcus gone. Not that it matters because they aren’t going to accept him regardless. As for Corinne and Charlie, they’re still shocked by what happened, and not sure what to do next.

Despite the fact that we’ve seen others go to Exile 8 times already, Bob decides he’s got a prayer of finding the hidden idol and chooses that over comfort. He has no luck, but he makes himself a fairly convincing fake idol (at least it’s better than the stick with a face Ozzy made).

Randy’s hoping for merge so he can see Crystal and puke. At the immunity challenge, Jeff tells them they’ve merged. The first challenge for individual immunity is to make a fire high enough to burn through a rope. They’re given flint, steel, and fire making supplies. Susie is the first to get a flame. Matty cuts his hand but isn’t getting anywhere. Sugar gets fire. But it ultimately doesn’t matter because this is a complete blowout. Although Sugar’s competitive, Susie retains her lead to win immunity. Nobody else was even involved in this sad competition.

They’ll be returning to the jinxed Fang camp as one new tribe.

Randy’s voting for Crystal no matter what. So Charlie readily agrees to this. He’s comfortable that he’s got a solid foursome with Corinne, himself, Randy, and Bob (yeah, Bob’s part of their alliance again). They hope to swing Sugar. Upon approaching her, she says she can’t live with Randy any more. They assure her they’ll get rid of Randy next. Corinne has convinced herself that Sugar is on their side “because she’s such a moron.”

The other side wants to get rid of Charlie or Corinne. Corinne’s odious personality may be problematic for her, but Ken wants revenge on Charlie for costing him a hidden immunity idol (silly logic for voting someone out, but it’ll work I suppose). They agree to take out Charlie and leave the annoying chick in. They know they also need Sugar. Ken approaches her and tries to convince her Charlie’s the brains behind Kota. He also promises she can get rid of whoever she wants next. Only he actually would probably honor this agreement, whereas Corinne would stab her in the back.

Sugar’s issue is this: she doesn’t trust anybody. Ken’s already lied to her once, and Randy and Corinne are putzes.

Randy tells Jeff that the reason he was being a dumbass at the challenge is because Matty only would have made his shot 9 times out of 10, whereas his own personal shot was flawless. Then Crystal asks Randy why he hates her. He responds that her and GC made life hell at the beginning. Charlie suggests that both of them may consider processing what comes out of their mouths first. Randy believes that Ken’s grown up and is not the little kid he saw at the start.

By a vote of 5-4, Charlie has been voted off the island. I wonder who Kota will add to their ever changing final alliance this time.

Lipstick Jungle Cancelled

Sophomore drama Lipstick Jungle has been cancelled by NBC. After struggling in NBC’s weak Wednesday lineup, the move to the Friday night deathslot made Lipstick Jungle’s cancellation a matter of time. Its latest Friday episode finished at 3.34 million viewers and 1.2/4 in the demo with a weak Crusoe lead in not helping it any. Its final Wednesday showing behind reliable Deal or No Deal was 4.19 million viewers with a 1.6/4 among adults.

My Own Worst Enemy Cancelled

Less than two months into the new season, freshman series My Own Worst Enemy has been cancelled. MOWE failed to gain any ground over (also cancelled) previous time slot occupant Journeyman and was down to just 4.25 million viewers and 1.8/5 in the demo in its latest showing, nearly half of what a slowing Heroes lead in managed. Whatever NBC puts in that time slot won’t work, unless they stick Deal or No Deal there.

Heroes Destiny Episode 1

The fans chose a new hero, Santiago, and now NBC is presenting this new hero in webisodes each Monday night. The first of four episodes premiered on Monday.

Cast Info
Columbian-born actor, Roberto Urbina, will bring the character to life. Urbina stars in a story created by the show’s award-winning writers and produced in collaboration with the series creators. Lina Esco (“Cane”) and Andrea Thompson (“24”) will also star in the innovative micro-series, being filmed on location in Los Angeles. Based on the Aspen Comics’ online illustrations which brought Santiago to life on NBC.com, the micro-series will be directed by Eagle Egilsson (“CSI: Miami,” “The Wire”).

Recap
Chapter 1 Let Us Pray starts on the streets of Barranco, Lima, Peru. A new hero, Santiago, is waiting to cross the street. When the light turns, he steps out in the street, and just as he’s about to get run over by a bus, he discovers he has powers. As everything goes into slow motion around him, he does a backflip, narrowly avoiding being run over.

When he arrives at church, his mother, Iris, tells him he’s directionless and needs purpose. Considering his new powers, he gets that now, although he’s not sure exactly what happened. Iris suggests that there’s a reason God saved him, and he needs to find that reason.

Either that or he just needs to find the pretty girl he just spotted across the street. With his newfound power, he’s able to catch up to her quite easily. Elisa says she was away at school but had to come back home after her father got sick. He suggests that the father was right in the sermon: they need to help each other.

A blonde woman’s been watching their discussion. Elisa tells her Santiago’s ready, receiving a response that she should get close to him. Then Elisa turns into water and disappears.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 9

Following black team’s horrible performance in The Biggest Loser Families Episode 8, the girls stuck together and voted out their only guy, Phil. These people are making it difficult to root for either team.

In a quite thoroughly revolting display, the blue team proves why everybody hates them. Vicky is absolutely thrilled that Phil is gone and can’t control her giggling. She’s glad he’s gone because he would be a horrible role model for America. And apparently she would be a good one.

Bob’s got a challenge for his team. Whoever runs the farthest for three minutes will win a banana fudge sundae. That’s a prize? Amy C manages to outrun the rest. There’s a catch. This is really a Jello/Cool Whip commercial in disguise.

Alison’s got an announcement. They’re no longer in teams. Vicky warns us we’ll have 4 blue standing in the finale. Scary thought. Then Alison asks them to follow her to the scale. In walks Phil. Vicky says she’ll need to see a psych doctor. Too easy.

Behind Phil are the other eliminated contestants, some of whom some people may actually remember. Jerry is not there with them, but only because he had to work. Only one of them will be returning, and it will be based on the challenge rather than weight loss. Still, they plan to see how the at home players have been doing.

Jerry: 339 pounds (-41, 10.78%)
Shellay: 177 pounds (-39, 18.05%)
Tom: 266 pounds (-48, 15.28%)
LT: 300 pounds (-57, 15.96%)
Adam: 305 pounds (-35, 10.29%)
Stacey: 190 pounds (-31, 14.02%)
Ed: 277 pounds (-58, 17.31%)
Amy P: 182 pounds (-47, 20.52%)
Phil: 263 pounds (-68 pounds, 20.54%)

So far the at home challenge is between Phil and his wife, the last two people eliminated. Shellay is also putting up some good numbers.

Vicky says in front of everyone that she’d like anybody to come back… except Phil. Does the term self control mean anything to her? Afterward, his wife’s crying because of the comments, so he confronts Vicky. She says he doesn’t deserve a spot in the game. Because he’s lost the most weight? She doesn’t believe she’s done anything wrong, Brady threatens him, and Heba begins her screeching. Then Stacey begins crying as well because the blue team is full of putzes. According to Heba, this chaos is all just Phil’s fault, and they wouldn’t be acting like asshats if he weren’t there.

In addition to getting back in the game, the winner of the challenge will have immunity at the weigh in. The challenge is steps. First to 1,000 wins. Tom’s not sure he can even finish. Stacey’s confident because she does step aerobics. Ed takes an early lead and is the first to 100. Phil’s on his heels, back by about 10 steps. At a couple hundred steps, Phil trips, which could cost him. Stacey passes LT to take third place, and she’s gaining fast. She than overtakes Phil. Ed looks like he’s tiring, while Stacey looks like she’s just getting started. Ed is first to 500. As they get into the 800s, Stacey’s about 10 steps behind. LT wants to see Stacey win and begins coaching her to give her that extra push. It’s a close race to the finish. As they get to the end, Ed gets his second wind and begins sprinting. Ed wins the challenge and returns to the game, giving team evil a big boost because now they’ve got two pairs of couples, along with fifth wheel Amy C, who probably should be realizing what a mess she’s going to be in if she doesn’t take matters into her own hands.

Ali from season 5 is back to visit the contestants. She’ll be taking them to Cynthia Sass of Prevention magazine to learn some nutrition tips. They also get $1,000 worth of groceries, and Michelle lands a spot on Prevention’s cover along with Ali.

The good news for the black team is that they had such a bad week last week. That’s about the only good news for them, as they don’t have a shot unless two blue go below, preferably not Amy C.

Ed: 273 pounds (-4)
Heba: 238 pounds (-9, 3.64%)
Coleen: 170 pounds (-7, 3.95%)
Amy: 181 pounds (-6, 3.21%)
Michelle: 194 pounds (-6, 3.00%)
Renee: 215 pounds (-7, 3.15%)
Vicky: 193 pounds (-8, 3.98%)
Brady: 264 pounds (-6, 2.22%)

This puts Brady and Michelle below the yellow line. Michelle’s only hope is that Amy realizes it’s a bad idea to be allied with two closely connected couples who will get rid of her as soon as they need to.

They won’t be given any time to decide. Instead, they will be be heading straight to the elimination room to talk about it there. Only they don’t really talk very much about it.

Votes
Vicky: Michelle
Renee: Brady
Coleen: Brady
Ed: Michelle
Heba: Michelle
Amy: Brady

Rather than voting along team lines, Amy follows the advice of her mother from earlier in the show to be careful because the others are there for themselves. Since it’s a tie vote, Brady will be going home because he had the lowest percentage of weight loss for the week. He is down from a size 48 pants to a size 34.

Based on the large amount of comments over on the Vicky post tonight, I’d imagine there are a lot of people breathing a sigh of relief over this move, at least those who are still watching, although obviously Vicky would have been a preferred boot over Brady. It ain’t over yet, though. Vicky hates Phil’s guts just because he was trying to get a member of the opposite team eliminated. No doubt she will go ballistic over a member of her team turning.

Heroes Season 3 Episode 8

Everybody decided it was time to visit Pinehearst in Heroes Season 3 Episode 7. At Angela’s request, Sylar went to help his brother Peter. Elle went there just wanting to be done with her powers no matter what, but Claire wasn’t quite as desperate as her to trust someone who just had Peter thrown out a seven story window. Nathan and Tracy are also making their way there.

Hiro’s starting his spirit walk, 18 months ago.

Arthur and Linderman are joined at the hip in their corruption. Arthur plans to have a talk with Nathan to get him to stop digging… either that or he’ll kill him.

Then we move ahead to one year ago, where we see Sylar preparing a noose. Then he’s silly enough to jump just as he hears Elle walking in, and she cuts him down with her powers. She’s there with HRG, who’s hiding in a van and waiting to get Sylar to use his power on someone.

Meredith’s been captured by the company, which wants to train her to be come an agent. Given the choice between agent or prisoner, she chooses agent.

Arthur’s discussion with Nathan lets him know he won’t get anywhere in convincing him to not continue his quest. As Nathan’s driving, a madman with some road rage comes up from behind him. Heidi is still in the wreck, but Nathan manages to fly out and save himself. He knows Linderman was involved, and he promises he’ll get him and that Arthur better make a choice or he’ll get his.

Arthur says Linderman wouldn’t dare go after Nathan on his own. Angela knows that’s true, but he denies any involvement.

When Elle arrives to see Sylar, he decides he wants to show her his power of telekinesis.

Meredith has managed to capture a villain as part of her training. When she arrives to imprison him, she sees her brother Flint. They told him they’d make him an agent, too, yet he’s in a cage.

Sylar tells Elle she makes him feel special, and that maybe he can just be Gabriel again. She doesn’t think he’s going to kill again. Good luck with that. HRG gives her an ultimatum. Either get Sylar to kill, or hit the streets on her own.

Angela sees Linderman and Arthur together and realizes what he’s up to. Lucky for him he’s got a nifty mind control power.

Meredith’s got a message for her brother: they’re tricking him because he’s dumb. She busts him out, and they go to the nearest train. A train which they must blow up because they’ve been followed. Flint escapes, but Meredith is back under their control. She blames the company for killing her baby girl. Only Claire ain’t dead, and the guy with Meredith decides to have some compassion and gives her a get out of jail free card.

Linderman’s got a message for Angela. Unlike Arthur, he tells her the truth.

Meredith has brought Sylar a playmate. Trevor has an ability, too. She gets Sylar to turn by saying that Trevor’s so special. To stop him from killing him, though, she uses her power on him. But she’s not strong enough to prevent him from using his power stealing ability. Elle feels guilty, but HRG is quite fascinated by what he’s watching on the monitors.

As Angela and Arthur are arguing, he collapses. Turns out the soup wasn’t his mother’s recipe after all.

Nathan gets home while his father’s still alive, but it’s not in time to save him, or so they’re told. The doctor’s just a front, working for Arthur. Arthur’s alive, just paralyzed and unable to speak.

Hiro has learned what he needs to on his spirit walk. Arthur’s still alive. The painter, however, isn’t. Then Arthur shows up and puts his hands on Hiro’s head, as he begins to scream.
