The Amazing Race 13 Episode 4

Having proved to be one of the strongest teams in the first two legs, Mark & Bill misread a clue telling them to travel by foot, which was enough to eliminate them in The Amazing Race 13 Episode 3.

With the football game going into overtime, The Amazing Race will be off to a late start as usual. A live blog will begin around 8:45 when 60 Minutes is over.

Kelly & Christy take the time at the pit stop to confront Nick & Starr. Yes, again.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Ken & Tina – 12:33AM
Second: Toni & Dallas – 12:59AM
Third: Terence & Sarah – 1:04AM
Fourth: Marisa & Brooke – 1:05AM
Fifth: Aja & Ty – 1:06AM
Sixth: Nick & Starr – 1:07AM
Seventh: Andrew & Dan – 1:08AM
Eighth: Kelly & Christy – 1:20AM

The teams are pretty well bunched together following the last close leg. Ken & Tina say they’ve turned the corner and are now getting along a lot better. Dallas tells us he’s college educated. Nick & Starr say they don’t take anything personally on the race. Kelly & Christy like everybody… except Nick & Starr.

Teams will now fly 6900 miles to Auckland, New Zealand, meaning people who speak English (though the teams will probably still try speaking Spanish). The counters are all closed, but teams can look for flights on the Internet. Andrew & Dan believe they have a prayer with Marisa & Brooke. Aja & Ty are bickering with each other while looking for flights. Everybody gets on the same flight, so it doesn’t all end up mattering anyway.

The first clue is at Gulf Harbour, where they untie knots to get their next clue. Aja & Ty are getting along now, but the flat tire from him driving on the curb should test their stress some. The good news for them is that Marisa & Brooke seem as though they’re trailing everybody by quite a bit.

From there, they will drive to the summit of Mount Eden. If they wish, they can opt for the fast forward (the first of two on the race), which is at the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere, the Auckland Sky Tower. Ken & Tina and Andrew & Dan will be doing the fast forward, which involves climbing to the top of the tower. Ken & Tina arrive at the fast forward first. Andrew & Dan, who know they’re behind Ken & Tina the whole way there, keep driving anyway, but turn back when they arrive and notice another car in the parking lot. Having won the fast forward, Ken & Tina will skip all tasks and take a helicopter ride to the next pit stop.

Kelly & Christy can’t seem to find the way to drive up to the summit, so they run up to it instead. That’d be a penalty, but they’re killing enough time that it probably won’t be. The road block is to pick an image and find the matching Maori tattoo from the group of warriors.

Road block (in order of arrival): Terence, Toni, Andrew, Christy, Starr, Aja, Brooke

The next clue is at the City Life Hotel. They’ll have to spot a Travelocity roaming gnome. When they get their gnomes, they’ll go to Kiwi 360.

The detour is a choice between matter of time or matter of skill. In matter of time, they’ll need to crush kiwis with their feet. In matter of skill, they must assemble and drive blokarts. The kiwi container is lined with jagged rocks, which could be bad going forward if they cut up their feet too bad. Most of the teams struggle with matter of time, but those who finish it head to the front of the pack. Aja & Ty are still arguing, but lucky for them the blondes have been way behind everybody all day long. Starr wipes out on the blokart and injures her arm but still completes the task.

Matter of time: Terence & Sarah, Kelly & Christy, Marisa & Brooke
Matter of skill: Toni & Dallas (switched from matter of time), Nick & Starr (switched from matter of time), Andrew & Dan (switched from matter of time), Aja & Ty (switched from matter of time)

The 1000 acre sheep farm Summer Hill is the pit stop for this leg of the race. Teams will be greeted by a special guest appearance of Phil’s dad.

First: Ken & Tina (win a trip to Rio de Janeiro)
Second: Terence & Sarah
Third: Kelly & Christy
Fourth: Toni & Dallas
Fifth: Nick & Starr
Sixth: Andrew & Dan
Seventh: Aja & Ty
Eliminated: Marisa & Brooke

I was hoping for Aja & Ty to be able to be put out of their misery, but Marisa & Brooke were the weakest link, despite their positive attitude.

The Amazing Race Asia 3 Episode 6

Mai & Oliver had a run of bad luck in The Amazing Race Asia 3 Episode 5, were ultimately unable to complete the leg, and were eliminated.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Vince & Sam – 6:11AM
Second: Henry & Bernie – 10:07AM
Third: AD & Fuzzie – 10:09AM
Fourth: Geoff & Tisha – 11:36AM
Fifth: Ida & Tania – 1:30PM

Teams will be flying to Hong Kong, China. Vince & Sam are happy to have the hometown advantage to go along with their big lead. Geoff & Tisha realize they’re all alone on the race.

First flight: Vince & Sam
Second flight: Henry & Bernie
Third flight: AD & Fuzzie, Geoff & Tisha
Fourth flight: Ida & Tania

All flights are direct and within about 4 hours of each other.

When they arrive in Hong Kong, teams will head from King’s Park to Central, Hong Kong, the main business district. The first trick is finding a cab. Geoff & Tisha let their good cab driver go when they’re getting the first clue, while AD & Fuzzie can’t seem to find a cab driver willing to go to Central.

The detour is a choice between get fishy or get lucky. In get fishy, teams must clean, gut, and scale 15 fish. In get lucky, teams must bite open fortune cookies until they find the right fortune. The dumb luck tasks are typically a bad idea, but it turns out this time the fortune cookie task is easier.

Get lucky: Sam & Vince, Geoff & Tisha, AD & Fuzzie, Ida & Tania
Get fishy: Henry & Bernie

The next stop is the Ladies Market via ferry from Central Pier. The three teams in the middle are on the same ferry. Geoff & Tisha stay on their own, while the other two teams sit together. The road block is to choose a handbag and search the market to find a woman who’s carrying the matching handbag.

Road block (in order of arrival): Sam, Bernie, AD, Tisha, Ida

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Blake Pier at Stanley Bay, a popular seaside town in Hong Kong.

First: Vince & Sam (win a spa getaway in Thailand)
Second: Henry & Bernie
Third: Geoff & Tisha
Fourth: AD & Fuzzie
Non-eliminated: Ida & Tania

This was a pretty obvious leg. One team way out in front, three somewhere in the middle, and one way in the back, but it was apparent there had to be a NEL since there haven’t been any yet. Ida & Tania have been non-eliminated, but they’ll need a friendlier leg next time if they hope to stay in the race. It’s mugging time, as Allan asks them for all their money.

Survivor: Gabon Episode 5

After a tribe shuffle, the new physically weak Fang tribe voted out one of its stronger members, Jacquie, in Survivor: Gabon Episode 4.

When she gets back from Exile, Sugar’s disappointed to see Kelly is still around rather than Jacquie.

Randy’s eating good and pleased with his new tribe.

This is Africa, so of course there are some wild animals. Fang spots an elephant near their camp. So obviously they decide to have a staring contest with it. Then Ace and Matty hop in a kayak and see how close they can get.

At the challenge, jaws drop when they find out Jacquie’s gone. Reward is an herb garden, salt and oil, and fruit. It’s a game of fruit baseball. The tribes have to toss fruit past a defender wielding a stick to their partners on the opposite side. Fang gets off to an early lead with Matty and Ken working together well. Dan gets the idea eventually, and they manage to pass Fang. Fang has 16 pounds of fruit. With 18 pounds, Kota wins reward. Sugar’s heading back to Exile.

Dan suggests that new Kota should stick together post-merge and keep going strong. Marcus doesn’t believe his enthusiasm for the new tribe.

Since she’s already got the idol, Sugar gets to opt for comfort when she gets to Exile.

GC decides to argue with Crystal because… he can. Ace sits back and enjoys the fireworks.

Pre-challenge, Matty says their chances are slim. As they’re getting ready to leave, they can’t find GC because he took off on his own. Crystal doesn’t care where he is and whether he got eaten by a monkey. In the nick of time, he returns, and they head off to see Jeff.

One member from each tribe will throw a ball down a hill. A blindfolded member from the other tribe will try to stop that ball from getting into a goal with the aid of a caller. The defender for Fang is Ace; the caller is Sugar. The defender for Kota is Dan; the caller is Randy. In the first round, Charlie scores 2 for Kota, while Matty scores 5 for Fang. Susie scores 2 more for Kota in the next round, while GC’s throw is blocked. Dan blocks his own ball, while Fang scores 2 more for a 7-4 lead. Crystal’s throw is blocked for Fang, as Kota scores 2 more points. Dan blocks Fang’s next ball. Randy yells “Freeze, Ace, freeze,” and Ace listens, although he’s on the other team, so he doesn’t get anywhere near the ball. Kota scores again and wins immunity.

When they get back to camp, GC says he’s ready to leave the game. Crystal’s over him, thinks he’s a loser, and wants to cut her losses and drop him. After some searching through Sugar’s bag and finding out she’s got the idol, though, they want to blindside her.

At tribal council, Sugar acknowledges she keeps her bag out where anybody can go through it if they want.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 6

Following Ed and Heba’s last place finish in The Biggest Loser Families Episode 5, Ed went home.

They can smell baked goods from a mile away and know they’re in for a temptation. One person will get the control to choose teams. Whoever has eaten the most calories wins the right to pick the teams. The lights go out, and now it’s time to eat in the dark. Heba speaks up and tries to take control of the challenge, wanting to keep the teams the same. Amy C and Shellay, however, disagree and speak up about it. Phil also disagrees and proceeds to chow down in silence. His peanutbutter cup eating doesn’t go unnoticed by Heba, and as much as he wants to answer her accusations, he can’t since you can’t talk with peanutbutter in your mouth unless you’re a horse.

The three contenders for the challenge are Amy C, Phil, and Heba. Phil ate two peanutbutter cups for 210 calories. Amy ate a brownie, which is 340 calories. The most was Heba with two donuts, which is 400 calories, and she wins the challenge and is able to choose the teams. She ain’t happy with Phil’s efforts during the challenge.

Jillian’s black team: Renee, Coleen, Michelle, Phil, Shellay
Bob’s blue team: Heba, Vicky, Amy P, Amy C, Brady

Heba assures us that, even though it may seem personal, which it is, her putting Phil and his wife on different teams is just gameplay. She has also split up Amy C and Shellay, while keeping her allies Vicky and Brady together and on her side.

Bob warns Heba that her decision to get rid of Phil was stupid and will backfire because it’s not smart decision making in this house.

As the sun is rising, Alison wakes everybody up and tells them the challenge will begin in 10 minutes. This challenge, 14 hours long, will last from sun up to sun down and is the longest challenge in the show’s history. They have the whole day to climb the mountain as many times as they can. There is some degree of insanity to this. At the top and bottom of each run, they’ll take their picture. Every person in the picture is worth a point, and all 5 is worth a bonus point. The winning team will get a 2 pound pass. Black team’s strategy is to just stay together and keep getting the bonus points. Blue decides that Vicky is weighing them down, so they split up and let Brady go on his own as well to try to make up for the lost bonus points. The temperature rises to triple digits before long.

Around 1PM, the teams call a truce for a couple hours to rest. Shellay and Coleen don’t trust the truce. They’re not sure that the other team has really stopped, and they feel guilty for not being out there continuing. Coleen doesn’t want to burn her bridges too quickly, so they decide against breaking the truce, which lasts for about three and a half hours. Their combined total was over 160 miles, and they ended up within 1 mile of each other. With 162 points, the black team’s game of working together as a team was the winning effort. Brady, as an individual, ran the furthest, over 20 miles. Blue team scored 147 points.

Michelle apparently feels like she’s betraying her father by being there with her mother. Jillian has her call her father for some inspiration to stick around and to get his okay. When they get to the weigh-in, Alison confirms with her that she’s still willing to be there, and she says that she is ready to be there and wants to stay. I guess all this silly drama at least made for good TV.

Michelle: 209 pounds (-7)
Renee: 232 pounds (-5)
Phil: 279 pounds (-8)
Coleen: 187 pounds (-5)
Shellay: 189 pounds (-5)
Total: -30 pounds, 2.66%, minus 2 pounds = 2.84%

Amy C: 199 pounds (-9)
Vicky: 211 pounds (-6)
Brady: 286 pounds (-6)
Amy P: 193 pounds (-6)
Heba: 258 pounds (-8)
Total: -35 pounds, 2.96%

The black team loses the weigh-in. Michelle is the biggest loser for her team and is safe, but the rest of the team is at risk. They have three pretty logical choices to choose from here, none of which are Phil. However, he is the new guy, so they may want to get rid of him on that basis.

Votes
Michelle: Shellay
Phil: Renee
Renee: Shellay
Shellay: Renee
Coleen: Shellay

Would have made more sense to split up the mother/daughter team, but ultimately Shellay has been voted out. Shellay is down 8 dress sizes from where she began at the start of the season.

Heroes Season 3 Episode 5

Previously on Heroes Season 3 Episode 4, Sylar blew up the future after being creepily nice, Parkman saw his rewritten future come true, Nathan saved Tracy from herself, and Hiro dug up Adam.

Nathan needs to know: is he an angel or a monster, a hero or a villain? He’s having difficulty believing Linderman’s actually there to help him.

Peter doesn’t want to be Sylar’s brother. Sylar stops him just short of ripping his mother’s skull open to get any more secrets she has been keeping.

After looking through a list of potential bad guys, Meredith promises Sandra that she’ll return Claire. They’re on the right trail. She is after Stephen Canfield, a guy who creates vortexes and makes people disappear forever.

Adam’s not happy to see Hiro, seeing as he buried him alive and all. Hiro’s willing to take risks to save the world. Adam says the villain is probably Angela Petrelli, an answer Hiro doesn’t like.

Linderman approaches Daphne and asks her to recruit for his organization for a new world order. She’s okay with whatever gets her paid.

Claire tells Stephen she’s bringing him back where he belongs. He just wants to find his family, as the company took them away from him, so now they probably think he abandoned them. He says he never meant to hurt anybody and that they have it all wrong. They just locked him up without a trial, and he just wants to see his wife, even if it’s for the last time.

Tracy’s struggling with how she killed someone, and she wants to turn herself in. Nathan wants her to know that would be a mistake because their powers are from God. Her powers are from a doctor in Reseda, though.

Claire feels sympathetic for Stephen and helps him get in touch with his wife. As their phone call is dropped, her father barges in along with Sylar. So then he opens up a vortex. With luck, the vortex doesn’t suck anybody into any hell dimension or anything. Stephen has escaped, though, and Claire is still looking to protect him. She trusts her father and tells him where he can find him.

Adam takes Hiro to a bar where he says the speedster was hired. He wants Ando and Hiro to look tough while they’re there. Adam very quickly gets into a bar brawl, ducks a punch, and Hiro gets knocked out. Easy escape for Adam.

Angela tells Nathan and Tracy that Zimmerman was instrumental in the development of synthetic abilities, which they gave to people like Tracy… and Nathan.

Maya finds Suresh’s missing neighbor. He’s not so much missing as hanging on a wall. She thinks Suresh has become a monster.

Hiro’s searched everywhere (except the dumpster) and believes Adam is gone. Knox has a little more luck finding Adam, though, and he tosses him into the back of a van.

Angela explains that what they did was wrong and that they divided the formula and hid it so it would never happen again. The formula will be used to create a world full of people with abilities that will end up destroying the world.

Nathan thinks they should go see Suresh since he’s a harmless (mad) scientist.

Stephen’s family never showed up. He thinks maybe they are afraid of him. HRG comes with an offer: make Sylar disappear, and this is all over. Unwilling to be a monster, Stephen decides to just suck himself into a vortex instead.

Hiro’s nemesis Daphne comes recruiting. He tells her they’ve changed, and that they’re bad asses now. Knox wants him to prove himself by killing Ando. So Hiro jabs Ando with a sword.

Sylar says HRG’s just a user, and Claire knows it. He may be a deranged sociopath, but he’s not entirely wrong.

Meredith never found Claire, but she did find Eric and is busy having dinner with him thanks to his mind control.

Angela hears a scream. She walks out to find Nathan and Tracy on the ground. Peter apparently didn’t do it because he, too, collapses. A man walks in and tells her she can’t stop him because she won’t even be able to move.

Daphne’s not happy about Ando being killed. Linderman wants her to recruit Parkman. She’s figured something out. She can sneak up on everybody, but she can’t sneak up on Linderman… because he’s not really there.

It appears all the strings are being pulled by Arthur Petrelli, the father.

The Amazing Race 13 Episode 3

Despite some major mistakes from other teams, Anthony & Stephanie were the last team to arrive and were eliminated in The Amazing Race 13 Episode 2. Ken & Tina continued to be a strong team, as did Mark & Bill and Terence & Sarah, although the latter team still looks like it’s on the verge of a breakdown. Having screwed up on not one but two clues, Kelly & Christy’s literacy is coming into question.

Kelly & Christy are still upset at Starr about a sports bra mishap, or at least that’s their story anyway.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Ken & Tina – 12:51AM
Second: Mark & Bill – 12:52AM
Third: Terence & Sarah – 1:13AM
Fourth: Aja & Ty – 1:14AM
Fifth: Toni & Dallas – 1:15AM
Sixth: Nick & Starr – 1:17AM
Seventh: Kelly & Christy – 1:18AM
Eighth: Andrew & Dan – 1:22AM
Ninth: Marisa & Brooke – 1:22AM

Ken & Tina know they both need to work on how they treat each other. Mark & Bill plan to be analytical and take some extra time to think about things if needed. Sarah realizes this is not a popularity contest, which is a good thing for her and Terence. Marisa & Brooke think they’re being underestimated, which may have to do with the always coming in next to last.

The next destination is 1200 miles away in La Paz, Bolivia, where they will first go to the statue of Simon Bolivar. There are apparently two different flights, but it doesn’t seem to matter which one they get on, as they’ll be sleeping outside for the night. The altitude of 13,000 feet may make breathing difficult.

Nick approaches Kelly & Christy to see why they’re being hateful. He says he’d like to get along and receives a response that they don’t care if people don’t like them.

When the morning paper arrives, it’s time to search for the first clue, an ad which tells them to go to Narvaez Hat Shop. It’s a detour. The detour is a choice between musical march or bumpy ride. In musical march, teams must make their way on foot and collect musicians and form a band then deliver them to a bandleader. In bumpy ride, they’ll ride locally crafted bicycles on the rough roads. A U-turn is ahead.

Musical march: Andrew & Dan, Marisa & Brooke
Bumpy ride: Mark & Bill, Ken & Tina, Kelly & Christy, Aja & Ty, Nick & Starr, Toni & Dallas, Terence & Sarah (switched from musical march after realizing their taxi error)

Even though the clue says travel by foot, Terence & Sarah hail a cab, forcing them to turn around and start over after they realize the mistake. Mark & Bill also take a cab.

Mark & Bill think they’re far enough ahead that they don’t have to use the U-turn. Marisa & Brooke also choose to not use the U-turn, as do Terence & Sarah and Ken & Tina. Andrew & Dan follow suit. Nick & Starr pass Kelly & Christy going down the hill, and Nick says they don’t want to U-turn anybody, though Starr’s not so sure. Since they’ve only got one U-turn the whole game, though, they’d rather save it. Aja & Ty also don’t use it, despite Starr’s request for them to use it on Kelly & Christy. Kelly & Christy think they’re in last place, so they don’t use it either, nor do Toni & Dallas.

The next destination is Los Titanes Del Ring, where the road block is fighting cholitas (female pro wrestlers). When they successfully execute all six wrestling moves, they’ll be able to move on. Much comedy ensues. I’m not real clear why Sarah chose to pick a fight instead of Terence. While they’re waiting for their partners, Aja tells Christy that Starr wanted her to U-turn them. Ken’s surprised he has to fight a girl but does well. Dallas finds this task easy and is able to make up a lot of time. Nick, Ty, and Dan also get by quickly. Mark’s struggling with the altitude and has to get some oxygen to get through it. After three tries, he gets through, and Marisa finishes on her second try. Sarah also gets through on her second attempt. Kelly gets through, knowing they’re the last team.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Mitador El Monticulo, a hilltop park. It turns into a mad dash with the cabs, jockeying for position. On the way there, Mark & Bill are reading the clue from earlier and realize they took a cab to the detour when they should have travelled by foot. They’re hit with a 30 minute penalty on arrival.

First: Ken & Tina (win a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico)
Second: Toni & Dallas
Third: Terence & Sarah
Fourth: Marisa & Brooke
Fifth: Aja & Ty
Sixth: Nick & Starr
Seventh: Andrew & Dan
Eighth: Kelly & Christy
Eliminated: Mark & Bill

Because of the penalty, Mark & Bill have been eliminated, while Kelly & Christy will live another day, meaning we can look forward to more bitterness from them.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The Amazing Race 13 Episode 4 I Wonder if They Like Blondes in New Zealand, which airs Sunday at 8/7c on CBS.

The Amazing Race Asia 3 Episode 5

Following on the heels of Natalie’s overdue departure, Niroo & Kapil both stopped trying in a disastrous performance throughout the leg in The Amazing Race Asia Season 3 Episode 4 and were eliminated.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Ida & Tania – 2:00PM
Second: Vince & Sam – 2:17PM
Third: Mai & Oliver – 2:53PM
Fourth: Henry & Bernie – 2:55PM
Fifth: AD & Fuzzie – 2:56PM
Sixth: Geoff & Tisha – 3:54PM

Mai & Oliver realize they argue over stupid things. Henry & Bernie say they’re calmer now and are taking a different approach. AD & Fuzzie seem to have a loose alliance with Henry & Bernie.

The first stop is Sony Style in the New Sogo department store, where they will search among 1000 Blu-ray discs for a clue, a dumb luck task of popping discs into players until they get lucky. It becomes even more hectic when multiple teams arrive. Sam & Vince finish quickly and easily. AD & Fuzzie finish next. Henry & Bernie are third. Ida & Tania begin discussing the penalty after a while. Considering Geoff & Tisha have arrived by this point, they’ve probably been there 2 hours already. They decide against the penalty and are the fourth to finish. Geoff & Tisha are next, leaving Mai & Oliver behind. When they realize that there’s only one disc left and that all the discs have been mixed together by everybody, so they’re unsure what has or has not been checked already, they’re demoralized, but Mai suggests just getting a bite to eat and then coming back and trying again. They keep plugging away but don’t make any progress. Eventually, the shop closes, so they have to stop searching and continue with the race. They’re a good distance behind everybody else, though.

From there, they can go for the first and only fast forward on the race. Having completed the first task first, Vince & Sam opt to do the fast forward. They’ll need to get a tattoo. Should be simple enough to complete, and they do, making first place pretty obvious.

The next destination is the New Pingshi Coal Mine in Shih-Fen. It’s a road block. In this road block, one team member must dig through hundreds of kilos of coal to find a souvenir. The first couple of teams find it with no problem, but the next two aren’t so lucky. Ida & Tania manage to get another police escort, but Geoff & Tisha have a breakdown, where she starts sounding like the quitters from the last two weeks.

Mai & Oliver don’t even bother with all that. They just follow a cab straight off. Except that cab breaks down on the way there. Completely exhausted from their day of searching, they decide to sleep in the car and try again in the morning. They’d have been better off quitting the last task and taking the penalty because this will put them half a day behind.

Road block (in order of arrival): Henry, Fuzzie, Tania, Geoff

Straight from the road block, they head to a detour, pick or pail. In pick, teams must retrieve three items from a wawachi machine. In pail, teams must deliver a filled bucket to the top of a hill, which will prove to be more physically demanding than they may think. Pick looks to be quite a bit easier.

Pick (in order of arrival): AD & Fuzzie, Henry & Bernie, Geoff & Tisha
Pail: Ida & Tania

The pitstop for this leg of the race is the Taipei Astronomical Museum in Taipei City.

First: Vince & Sam (win a golfing getaway in Thailand)
Second: Henry & Bernie
Third: AD & Fuzzie
Fourth: Geoff & Tisha
Fifth: Ida & Tania
Eliminated: Mai & Oliver

When morning arrives, Allan wakes up Mai & Oliver to inform them they have been eliminated. Strangely, I’m sad to see them go.
