Reaper seems to have won over critics already, so that combined with the hope that we may finally be returning to the funny/supernatural roots that made The WB worth watching had me interested in watching the premiere.
Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison, Grounded For Life/Brad O’Keefe) wakes up on the morning of his 21st birthday, and his parents seem overly anxious about the day. His mom tells him she wants him to have a great day, no matter what happens. His friend Bert Wysocki (Tyler Labine) says they should get in a car, get some smack, and kill a hooker in Vegas to celebrate his birthday, to which his mother responds by leaving the room crying.
He gets grief from his brother Kyle for not completing college and for still working at a place where he has to wear an apron, which gets him to thinking he is getting tired of this place. Bert tells him he does want to keep working there because he’s going to make it a topless store eventually. He then tells him he should go after Andi (Missy Peregrym, Heroes/Candice Wilmer), but Sam says they’re just friends. While in the car, a dog starts barking and jumping at the car. Then on his way into work, Sam sees a shopping cart going through the parking lot. As he attempts to grab it, it runs away from him. Odd but seemingly nothing he considers out of the ordinary, yet anyway.
He does make something of an attempt to run with Bert’s idea of getting together with Andi when discussing that they both have the same day off, but when he asks her what her plans are for her day off, she lets him know she’s going to be writing a psych paper in the library.
As he’s working (watching TV with baby chicks and thinking it’s actually flames), he notices that something’s about to fall on Andi’s head, and he jumps to prevent it. He knocks the box out of the way, but after doing that, he says he didn’t even touch it because it was too far away. Bert throws a bottle at his head to prove he can’t move it with his mind. He again tries to bring up the subject of going out with Andi, but this time he’s interrupted by a bunch of dogs, standing in the aisle and angry.
Once that ordeal’s done with, he says he’s not feeling well and heads home. He’s okay until a man appears in his backseat… a man who introduces himself as the Devil. He gets into a car wreck, and when he gets out to check, there is no man in his backseat.
His father’s waiting up for him when he gets home, expecting he might have had a bad day. Sam says he thinks he might be going insane. He tells his dad about his day, when his dad tells him he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for a cure for an illness he had before Sam was born.
Strangely enough, Sam doesn’t have much trouble believing this. He goes and tells Bert. “How drunk are you?” “Totally sober.” “How drunk am I?” Sock’s mostly upset nothing cool like that ever happens to him, but he buys it as well.
When he gets home, the Devil’s there waiting for him (I wonder if this Devil guy has another name so I don’t have to keep calling him “the Devil”). He tells Sam he’s going to be working for him on Earth, bringing escaped souls back to Hell like a bounty hunter. “All you have to do is track down fugitives and haul their asses over to a portal to Hell. Easy.” Any place that seems like Hell on Earth is Hell on Earth, like the DMV on Union St.
His first fugitive is a firefighter who escaped from Hell and also happens to weigh twice as much as Sam. He’s the one responsible for setting fires in town. The Devil gives Sam a vessel to trap him in. Sam tries to refuse to help, but he must, or the Devil gets his mother’s soul. When he opens the box, he finds a Dirt Devil inside, one that causes a truck to move. Shouldn’t he have to do this somewhat in secret instead of just telling all his friends/coworkers?
The Devil seems to have forgotten one minor detail. The fugitve can turn into flames and shoot them as well. Sam wants to catch him but can’t get the dustbuster to work. In the process, Ben, their friend from work, gets burned. Sam blames himself. He goes after the firefighter alone but just shows up to a burned down house.
When he gets home, his mom tells him she wants to go instead and to tell them to come for her. He pretends everything’s back to normal. Then, he heads to his room, which has been converted into a hockey rink. Sam gets frustrated and tries to give up, but the Devil tells him to investigate and figure out why the fireman does what he does. After killing the Zamboni driver, he advises him he doesn’t accept failure.
Sam goes to get Sock and figures out that the fireman is burning down the same places he was 50 years ago, so he wants to find out who he was when he was alive. They go to dig up legal records from Josie, Bert’s ex-girlfriend, who works in a courthouse. She finds out all the arson attempts Ned (excellent name for a scary killer) did when he was alive were unsuccessful, until he died in a fire he set at his parents’ house, which has not yet been burned down again but has been rebuilt as an elementary school.
After figuring out that the Dirt Devil wasn’t working before because it needed to be recharged, the boys head down to the elementary school to confront Ned. Sam figures out how to harness his powers to redirect the flames toward Ned. He then vacuums him up and takes him to the DMV.
Sam then realizes he must do this for the rest of his life, but he doesn’t mind it. He feels good about helping people and being responsible.
This is one of the better premieres I’ve seen in a while. Definitely a return to the old days of Buffy/Angel/Charmed. Good premise and well written, and the Bert character is hilarious.

I’d missed the hype of this show (assuming there was any), but the preview on Heroes reminded me of Quantum Leap, which some of you may remember from the early 90s, so I decided to take a look at this and see what it’s like. In brief, it’s a show about a man who travels through time, helping people he meets along the way.
Dan Vassar (Kevin McKidd, Lucius in HBO’s Rome) is a normal guy with a normal life and a normal anniversary (that he remembers) coming up. So, of course, that means something extraordinary is about to happen to him to change his life forever. On his way to his anniversary dinner, he hops into a cab, and we see a flash. He steps into a bar where people are celebrating a catch in a game… a game that happened 8 years ago. He sees a woman (his ex-wife Livia) standing outside the bar and chases after her, hopping back into his cab, only to reawaken in the present.
His hopes of it being just a dream were short-lived. Next time he wakes up, he goes into what he believes is his house and is greeted by an attempted whack upside the head with a baseball bat. His brilliant plan to get out of this is to be punched in the face. For some odd reason, that doesn’t seem to help matters any. Upon asking what the date is, he’s told it’s October 6, 1987.
Back in the present, his wife Katie (Gretchen Egolf) goes searching for him because she can’t find him anywhere. She asks his brother Jack (Reed Diamond) for his assistance since he’s a cop. He doesn’t seem particularly concerned but agrees to talk to the guys and put the word out.
Dan sees a man, Neal, standing in traffic and jumps to push him out of the way of an oncoming vehicle, preventing his suicide attempt over a woman. From there, he goes home to an angry wife, who tells him he’s been gone for two days. Since he missed a deadline in the process, his boss isn’t impressed with him either. While attempting to contact a source, he goes online and finds out that Neal is actually real.
Next time he goes back in time, he does it while driving. He disappears, but the car keeps on going, crashing into two other cars and making people think he fled the scene. His boss thinks he has a drug problem and needs help. Dan wakes up in the middle of the road just in time to not be run over. He heads over to the newsstand where a man with one of those really big 1990s cell phones makes fun of him wearing a receiver on his ear. This time it’s 1990. And who should be there but Neal, whose love life doesn’t seem to have gotten any better? He then also bumps into Livia, waiting tables.
Dan talks to Neal’s girlfriend, who’s pregnant but doesn’t want the child, and says he’d do anything to get back to his son Zack. But back in the present, he’s missing the piano recital he said promised he’d be there for, though he does show up in the nick of time, to a very happy son but a wife who continues to get angrier.
Everybody’s come to the conclusion he’s a drug addict. His brother shows up at the intervention his wife has planned. He tells him he’s under arrest for hit and run. When they get to the station, however, he tells him one witness says nobody was even driving, so he can’t charge him. He attemps to ask Dan what’s wrong but doesn’t get far. As he’s leaving, Dan turns around and says he saw Livia and warned her about things that hadn’t happened yet, making him concerned he may have creeped her out.
Further research into Neal’s family reveals that Nicole and her son were killed in 1997, Dan’s next trip. This time he’s learned his lesson. Instead of being attacked by a baseball bat wielding madman, he goes to where he used to live at the time. It’s not long before this turns out to be a bad idea as well, though. There he meets up with Livia. Is sleeping with your dead ex-wife before you marry your current wife cheating? Apparently the answer is yes, so he runs out of there before anything happens.
As he’s running out, he bumps into Livia, present Livia, who’s not actually dead because she left the plane before it went down. She’s well aware of his mission. She tells him he’ll probably mess up but shouldn’t mess with anything. He calls his brother from a payphone, but his brother sees him walking across the street, so he refuses to help. Is his brother going to be of any use at some point? So instead, he takes the place of past Dan and asks past Livia to help him out.
After finding out where Neal works, he tracks him down and pretends he knew him from high school. Neal lets him know they split up, and they’re moving to LA. He still loves her and isn’t planning on letting them go. As he’s yelling across the street at Nicole, Neal gets struck by a bus. When Nicole sees the gun he’s toting, she believes he was coming to kill her as promised. Dan thought he was there to save a family, which he did, just not in the way he expected. The ripple effect was more far reaching, however, as Neal’s son Jacob graduated pre-med from Stamford, and in one instance saved 6 kids from a bus wreck. Dan realizes it was all about protecting Jacob.
Then he gets home to a (still) angry wife. Before he returned, he buried a chest under the patio they put in when they moved in. It contained a newspaper with the date and his wife’s wedding ring. So at least she knows he’s not crazy now.
I like the premise of this show, even if it is derivitave. Anyone who wants immediate answers to their questions of why he’s got these new abilities will be left unsatisfied, but those two issues are the extent of the complaints I’ve heard thus far. Granted, a sidekick like Al from Quantum Leap wouldn’t hurt matters any.

The suspense has been building for months following the Heroes Season 1 finale. There have been a lot of spoilers, and we know there are going to be a lot more heroes this season. Now it’s time to start answering some of the questions we were left with following last year’s cliffhanger ending. Let’s kick off another live Heroes blog, as we get into the second half of a jam-packed night here at dingoRUE.
Dr. Suresh starts off in a classroom discussing what he’s learned. Someone greets him after the lecture, and he’s there to offer him a job. The guy making the offer says he’s the only one who doesn’t think Suresh is nuts.
Next, two people (Alejandro and Maya, wanted for murder) are running from the cops. They hide in a building to escape. They’re attempting to escape to America. He’s optimistic, but she’s concerned.
Then Claire heads to her new school in California. She’s got a new last name, Butler, and is informed by her father (Noah) that she has to be entirely unextraordinary, not standing out in any way, including cheerleading. She says it would be easier if she had her own car, and coincidentally enough, he hands over the keys.
Shortly after that, she’s running through the parking lot and a guy, West, who she will meet up with later in class, has to brake quickly to avoid her.
Hiro, meanwhile, has dropped into a field in 1600s Japan, clearly a battlefield with a battle about to begin. Shortly thereafter, there’s an eclipse. Arrows are headed directly for him, but he stops time just before being hit. He happens to run into his hero, Takezo Kensei.
Parkman’s on the job in a hostage situation (turns out to just be a training exercise). Through his mind reading ability, he’s able to determine who’s actually the hostage and who’s the criminal, and he shoots the right one. He’s allowed to return back to the force.
In class, Claire gets an evil look from a girl who’s sure to hate her. She then is greeted by West, as she’s sticking her hand in the flame of a burner. Then the teacher begins speaking and asks a question about Charles Darwin. Claire knows the answer, which West picks up on, but she doesn’t raise her hand because her father told her not to do so.
Parkman picks up Molly (the human tracking system) after school, where her teacher stops him to tell him she’s been having nightmares, and she says his “situation” isn’t the most stable. She takes out some drawings Molly did that keep getting worse.
Ando and Hiro’s father are discussing Hiro’s disappearance, and a photo falls out of a newspaper. Hiro’s father reveals it means he’ll be dead within 24 hours.
Nathan’s a complete mess (though still believes his brother is alive), and his mother’s not happy about him not following the plan. He tells her she’s evil and kicks her out. She then gets a photo with the same marking as the one Hiro’s father got.
Hiro finds out that Takezo, his hero and the guy whose sword he stole, is actually a white guy. Takezo says that’s his name there but nobody’s called him a hero before.
Claire’s father now works in a normal 9-5 job with a boss on an ego trip who thinks he’s more important than he actually is.
Dr. Suresh meets with the guy who ran into him earlier, who has a theory that he can decide who lives and who dies. He’s got the funds to assist Suresh in the research and isn’t concerned about money because he can make gold.
When Parkman asks Molly about her dreams, she turns from sweet little girl into demonchild, letting him know he’s not going to get an answer from her.
The guys who are transporting Alejandro and Maya get into a disagreement with Alejandro because one of them wants Maya up front with him. He beats up Alejandro, leaves him, and takes off with Maya.
In gym class, the head cheerleader is picking on a girl. Claire steps up and offers to do a backtuck off the tower to get them to stop picking on the other girl. She climbs the tower but says she can’t do it. She does it after everyone leaves and injures herself, which obviously isn’t a problem. However, West walks in, he knows what she did, and he knows she’s special.
At night, Parkman sees Molly struggling while she’s sleeping. He uses his abilities to try to figure out what’s wrong. She’s wakes up but is afraid to tell him anything out of fear he’ll get killed.
Claire’s father gets sick of his boss and uses his powers on him to frighten him into leaving him alone and stop going on ridiculous power trips.
Takezo reveals he’s an Englishman. He then reveals he’s fighting for money, since he can’t spend honor. Hiro’s completely disillusioned by his hero. Otsu village is pillaged and burned by bandits, and Hiro believes he broke history, breaking the future as well. Hiro tries to convince Takezo he must rescue the swordsmith and make his daughter fall in love with him, thereby fulfilling his destiny and becoming a hero. This is greeted with a punch in the face. Hiro’s got his work cut out for him, as Takezo mostly just wants to get drunk.
Claire pretends her first day was uneventful. Her father responds exactly the same. He then gets a phone call from Suresh, who reveals the whole thing with him earlier was just a setup and that they’re working together to bring the company down.
Alejandro returns to the van to realize what he feared. The truck has been burned, everyone’s dead, and Maya’s sitting on the side of it crying.
Claire calls Nathan. She’s afraid she can’t not be who she really is. He’s of no help and hangs up. From outside her window, West is watching her… flying through the sky.
A hooded man comes to get Hiro’s father. He charges him off the building and kills him. Ando shows up a split second too late.
Three men in Ireland are searching a building for some iPods. They don’t find what they’re looking for but do find something everyone else has been looking for: Peter Petrelli, with a case of amnesia.

Prison Break Season 3 episode 1 primarily focused on the horrible conditions of Sona, the prison Michael ended up in with Mahone, Bellick, and T-Bag. They dangled a bit ray of hope that he would be getting out by the end of the episode, but we knew better than that. Easy exit means no escape. At the end of the episode, it was revealed that he had to help break out James Whistler, and LJ and Sara were being used as leverage to ensure his cooperation. The show starts with everyone waiting in line to get rationed water. One of Lechero’s men starts a fight, which ends in the water barrel being accidentally pushed over. This is a serious problem. People can live weeks without food, but there’s only so long a man can go without water. The potential of another riot is seriously high if this doesn’t get resolved quickly.
Scofield inquires about Whistler and is informed everybody’s looking for him, as he’s disappeared, having been accused of killing the mayor’s son. The message that was hidden in the dead body’s clothes has also been hidden in Michael’s pocket, both by Bellick, who ironically is Michael’s only hope of finding Whistler. This is what makes it so hard to tell good from bad in this show, but also what makes it so interesting.
Bellick tips Michael off to look in the sewers. It’s not going to be as easy as he’d hoped because he must break Whistler out without anyone knowing about it, since he’s a dead man if he gets spotted. Later, we find out that the mayor has promised freedom for whoever kills Whistler.
Due to the political nature of the crime, they’re going for the brothers because it’s the only option of getting Whistler out, as it’s going in through the backdoor. Link is informed by his contact, “Susan B. Anthony,” that she knows he’s going to threaten her life, but he tells her he’s going not going after if something goes wrong, implying he’ll wipe out her family. He says the breakout can’t be done in a week, but she doesn’t care.
Scofield promises to help Bellick with his problems (starvation, being half naked, etc.) in exchange for keeping quiet about Whistler. Will they work together, or will one or the other turn the first chance they get?
Sucre shows up with a gun looking for Maricruz. He threatens to shoot Bellick, who then reveals he just conned him and that he made Maricruz run off, so she is not actually locked up. He expects the favor be returned by helping him get out of jail, but Sucre just runs off.
So much for the secret. Mahone also discovers Whistler. Yeah, he’ll be along for the ride as well. We later find out that Mahone had a deal with Lechero to bring him Whistler. Michael’s fully willing to break him out of there… or die trying.
Bellick decides to use his knowledge of Whistler in another way. He chooses to rat him out rather than working with Scofield and heads to T-Bag, who’s gotten in good with Lechero. By the time Michael gets down there, Mahone’s already broken Whistler out of his hiding place.
Michael tries to reason with Alex, but he doesn’t want to hear any of it. Whistler runs down the other end of the sewer before any action is able to be taken anyway. Scofield then also goes to talk to Lechero, where T-Bag informs him Michael’s a snake and can’t be trusted. Michael then heads out to the courtyard to meet up with McGrady, the young kid who seems to like him. He asks for some alcohol. After getting that, he asks for a lot of plastic bags and tells McGrady it will be well worth his while.
The woman from the first episode who grabbed the note from the dead body is Sophia Lugo, and she says she’s James Whistler’s girlfriend. Following up on the clue on the note, Link meets up with her at Banco de Versailles as she’s withdrawing Whistler’s belongings. He takes what she got, a book about birds, and she doesn’t seem to have a clue what he’s talking about in terms of his and Michael’s involvement in the situation, or at least that’s how she wants it to appear to whoever’s watching (and they know somebody is).
Alex catches up with Whistler, insisting he’s better off going with him. He drags him to the courtyard, where a riot due to lack of water is pending. Just as things are getting out of control, Scofield finishes working his magic, lights the alcohol filled bags, and causes water to come flying out through the pipes, giving everybody plenty of water, making them temporarily forget they hate each other. Lechero is very pleased with this and agrees to hand Whistler over to Michael.
Sucre decides against going back to Chicago to make sure his family is safe, following Lincoln’s advice. He promises Maricruz he’ll find her when he gets his life together.
When Link gets back to the hotel, Susan’s there waiting for the bird guide, threatening to kill him if he doesn’t give it to her. Prepared for this, he hands her a fake one, then pulls the real one out of his other pocket after she leaves.
At the end of the episode, Whistler asks Michael how they’re getting out of there, receiving a response that he has no idea.
