Kid Nation Episode 5

In Kid Nation episode 4, the producers tried to stir up trouble with the introduction of religion, Taylor and most of her yellow district continued to do whatever they wanted (which is nothing), and the town again complained about Taylor’s lack of leadership.

Zach goes into Taylor’s bunkhouse to wake people up and tell them they need to cook breakfast. They refuse.

The pioneer journal suggests district elections. If nothing else, Taylor’s gotta go, but it will be interesting to see whether she’s got enough popularity with enough people to stay in charge. Laurel and Mike have done a good enough job that I’d be okay with them sticking around.

As they’re about to break the news, a food fight breaks out. There’s much happiness from the townsfolk. Sophia asks how many of the town council are confident, and none of them are.

The green district, despite the fact that they always lose the showdowns, is a very good district and discusses things maturely, coming to the conclusion that, although they have people like Michael, Sophia, and Morgan, Laurel should stay in charge.

Mike asks whether anyone from the red district wants to oppose him. Guylan raises his hand. Who?

Anjay asks whether anyone wants to oppose him, and Olivia, who doesn’t like him, decides she does.

Taylor asks for another (another) chance. Zach says he’ll oppose her, and he’s the best pick. He says he’s getting tired of “Deal with it.” He asks people to tell him they agree with him, which they do.

The showdown is about politics. Each district will send out one person at a time to smash pinatas. In some of the pinatas is a picture of a US President. They must bring the pictures back to their council leaders, who will put them in historical order. Mike’s pretty confident, but everybody else doesn’t have an idea. Green gets off to a fast start. Blue team’s smaller members prove problematic. Taylor has no clue, but Zach tells her the right order. Green gets all the pictures first but takes a long time to put them in order. By a split second, Laurel outruns Taylor, but she’s wrong. Yellow district gets theirs right and is the upper class. Going back to their original order, green finally gets out of the laborer class and takes second to become the mechants. Red team takes third place and are the cooks. With 15 seconds left, blue finishes, getting a reward for the town.

The first choice is a BBQ. The second choice is toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss. The council takes the dental choice, an unpopular but good decision. Taylor tells the other council members if they want meat, they can kill a chicken, which is a spot on assessment. As with the pizza, Mike again makes it clear he disagrees with the council’s non-food choice.

Taylor’s confident because she has all the girls on her side. Zach realizes this and pitches his case to the girls, telling them it’s their choice between Taylor letting them be lazy or someone doing a good job. Markelle tears down Taylor’s poster and starts shouting for people to vote Taylor out. He then rips it up, and Leila, who made the poster, gets upset and cries. Greg, who from time to time shows he’s mostly just putting on a tough guy act, goes to comfort her.

Greg and Zach are mentioned as the top choices for a gold star.

The current council’s last act of business is to award the gold star. Greg finally gets the gold star he’s been working toward. He says he’s going to use the money for college.

Laurel stays in power because nobody runs against her.

The Race 2 Episode 4

The Race 2 is a production of ICTV that’s structured similarly to The Amazing Race. Watch The Race 2 online.

If you haven’t seen The Race 2 yet, now’s as good a time as any to catch up. I’m not gonna spoil it up front, but here’s the drama I’ve been waiting for. After a bit of a slow start, the last half of this special 90 minute episode is excellent.

In The Race 2 Episode 3, Jon & Jenna got a big break and coasted to first, Dave & Matt continued to get on people’s nerves (but in a good way), and Drew & Vanessa finally ended up in last place. The current top three appear to be the most likely contenders for the win.

Dave & Matt attempt to rationalize how coming in second is better than coming in first. But anyway, at the end of the day, they are pretty similar to Rob & Amber, except that they’re going out of their way to screw with people’s minds. The other teams hate them so much that there’s always the risk they’ll lose focus on the race and start focusing more on the competition. They snoop around in Daniel & Jeff’s car hoping they’d get caught, which they did, creating paranoia among the other teams that something’s wrong with their cars. They then plant drawings in the middle of the night, and leave notes telling them they did things to their cars (i.e. put a banana in their tailpipe). Completely valid gameplan, but the tailpipe bit pushed the envelope a bit much, resulting in a time penalty that dropped them from second to last. Seemingly harsh, but I’m not surprised they finally did go too far, not that it’ll slow them down any.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived, except Dave & Matt, with the penalty.

First: Jon & Jenna
Second: Sadie & Ginalola
Third: Hal & Matilda
Fourth: Daniel & Jeff
Fifth: Dave & Matt

They must first head to the fire training grounds on West Ave, where they must each complete a training exercise. One teammate must put on truck gear and connect the truck to the fire hydrant; the other teammate must put on full gear and crawl through a smoky building to rescue a dummy. Jon & Jenna make it look easy and finish just as Sadie & Ginalola arrive. Hal & Matilda and Daniel & Jeff arrive at the same time, and both teams appear to struggle just to find the clue. Sadie finishes pretty quickly, but for Ginalola, it’s not quite so easy, which backs up the other teams because it’s first come first served, particularly bad news for Dave & Matt, who show up as Ginalola’s struggling through the rescue training. As Jon did with her, Sadie helps Hal, all in an effort to get rid of Dave & Matt. As they’re leaving, Sadie & Ginalola get directions from the fireman how to get to the next location, something Jon & Jenna failed to do and ended up getting lost. Dave & Matt eavesdrop, in addition to taking notes while the others are doing the task. As they leave for the next destination, they believe they’ve made up some ground.

The next destination is the Sa-Sa-Na Loft Monument, which they must figure out is known locally as the Indian girl monument. Teams must search from a scenic outlook for a person holding a banner with The Race logo. Despite getting lost, Jon & Jenna arrive first. The rest of the teams arrive in the same order as they started. Sadie & Ginalola show up and find out how long Jon & Jenna have been there, so they go back to move the car. While they’re gone, Jon & Jenna find the clue and take off. They also make sure not to drive right up to the person just so the others don’t see their car. Smart play, but so much for the alliance. Jeff & Daniel arrive as the others are leaving (Hal & Matilda have caught up and are now following Sadie & Ginalola to the banner). Dave & Matt are still well behind.

Up next is a stop at the Tioga county office building, where they must use a map to answer 11 questions about the villages, which are depicted in murals throughout the building. The last remaining mural is where they must go to find the next pitstop. Jon & Jenna have answered two questions by the time Sadie & Ginalola and Hal & Matilda arrive. Jon proposes they work together. Hmm. But he does say not to help Daniel & Jeff if they arrive before everyone’s finished.

Just as I was thinking Dave & Matt were toast, through a combination of Daniel & Jeff getting lost and Dave & Matt running red lights on purpose, Dave & Matt arrive seconds ahead, so it’s anybody’s race for last place. Daniel & Jeff go off on a wild goose chase, and the other teams insist on hiding the map from Dave & Matt, a cheap but valid tactic, even if it is the exact same thing they’re all so upset about having done to them. When they ask if blocking the map is against the rules, they’re told the map can be used as they wish. So they step away and plot to grab the map. This eventually degrades into a shoving match, and in the commotion, they take the map and run. Or try to run anyway, as they’re stopped pretty quickly off camera, which then leads to a shouting match. As a result of this, teams are separated and allowed to view the map individually in two minute intervals. However, it’s not long before all the other teams get back together and start sharing information again, leaving Dave & Matt on their own with a limited time to view the map. This task has definitely made for good TV, but it’s been way too easy for everyone to abuse.

Jon & Jenna figure it out to be Waverly. He tries explaining it to Sadie & Ginalola but is told it’s not his turn at the map. He does tell it to everyone else before leaving, though. The other teams must spend at least two minutes looking at the map before they leave. Nobody’s completely convinced that this answer is actually correct, but they seem to just be going on faith, knowing that if they’re wrong, they’ll at least have a bunch of other wrong people with them. A large factor is no doubt that they just want to get as far away from Dave & Matt as possible.

On the way, Sadie & Ginalola get suspicious that they were given incorrect information, particularly since Jon & Jenna were so quick to ditch them earlier. While everybody else is travelling to Waverly, Dave & Matt choose it as their 10th mural eliminated. They can’t figure out the last one to eliminate, so they just decide to go to Candor since it’s closer, which is the very last one that the other teams eliminated, though they continue to debate the whole time there whether they should go there or to Newark Valley.

Sadie & Ginalola do the math while driving and also eliminate Waverly and stop Hal & Matilda to ask them. Jeff & Daniel see these two teams on the side of the road and stop to find out what’s going on. They all decide to go to Candor.

Jon & Jenna arrive at the building in Waverly but aren’t able to find anything or anyone. After wandering around for a while, they decide they need to turn around and head back to Owego to look at the map again. They decide to go to Candor and figure out why the first answer was wrong, doing the math that the others did quite some time ago.

Even up to 1/4 mile away from the pitstop, Dave and Matt are still debating where they should go. They stop to ask someone about the old coal barn in Candor (which as it turns out is indeed the pitstop for this leg of the race) and don’t get a positive response, so they switch gears and decide to go to Newark Valley. After they leave the gas station, then the locals start discussing where the barn is… right down the road. Of course, when they arrive in Newark Valley (9 miles away), they find out that’s not right. Back to Owego it is, where they again decide to go to Candor, but this time they’re both in agreement.

Hal & Matilda break off from the group and go the right way. They discover the pitstop first. The other two teams in their group, who don’t know where they disappeared to, are 2 miles away, placing them closer than any of the other teams.

After the first three teams arrive, they begin talking about everybody being a team against Dave & Matt again. Because that worked out so well last time, when all four teams drove the wrong way because they were in such a hurry to beat them. Dave & Matt refuse to stop at the same gas station as they did the first time since they got nowhere, but Jon & Jenna do stop there. They get a good response from multiple people. In the end, that’s enough.

At the pitstop:

First: Hal & Matilda
Second: Daniel & Jeff
Third: Sadie & Ginalola
Fourth: Jon & Jenna
Fifth: Dave & Matt (eliminated)

The best team got beat. Tough way to lose, but at least it was because they messed up and not because they weren’t given a chance as I feared would happen.

The Biggest Loser 4 Episode 6

In The Biggest Loser 4 Episode 6, the black team lost the weigh in, despite torturing themselves and refusing to indulge while on vacation in Jamaica. In a strategic move, one of the twins, Jim, was eliminated.

Bob seems to be getting tired of losing challenges. This time, the challenge is not about fastest time but who can carry weight the furthest. Each teammate will carry weights (60% of body weight for women, 75% for men) as far as they can. Whichever team carries the weight the furthest wins. Red team drops out first with Amy. Nicole is next out for blue team. Hollie just keeps going and is last out. Next up is Jez for the black team, Kae for the blue team, and Bryan for the red team. This puts black and blue teams within 6 feet of each other, with red still way behind following a horrible performance by Amy. Ryan is next for blue, and despite a strong effort, Bill drops out in second for black, so Phil ends up winning it for the red team, in spite of them, not because of them. As one of the others said, he won this challenge and the others. Even if it’s reasonably fair to say there was some fairness to how the weight was determined, I think it’s fair to say Phil’s got a lot more muscle than the rest. As a reward, the red team is able to see videos of their family.

Dave starts to whine about not wanting to do what he’s being told because he prefers to go at a ridiculously slow pace instead. Kim keeps pushing, and he keeps whining. She loses her cool and swears, and he hops off the treadmill and leaves the room (swearing at her that he doesn’t like people swearing at him).

Jillian gets a call from Hollie’s stepfather telling her that her mother had a relapse with leukemia, and they’re not sure what’s going to happen. Hollie goes home to talk to her mom and see how she’s doing. At the weigh in, it’s revealed that her mom died a couple hours before.

It’s now time for the weigh in.

Blue Team
Nicole: 248 pounds (-4)
Neil: 355 pounds (-10)
Kae: 178 pounds (-6)
Ryan: 320 pounds (-11)
Total: -31 pounds (2.74%)

Red Team
Amy: 265 pounds (-3)
David: 323 pounds (-5)
Bryan: 304 pounds (-4)
Phil: 342 pounds (-4)
Total: -16 pounds (1.28%)

Black Team
Hollie (weighed in earlier): 225 pounds (-3)
Isabeau: 259 pounds (-5)
Julie: 195 pounds (-4)
Jez: 295 pounds (-7)
Bill: 268 pounds (-11)
Total: -30 pounds (2.36%)

Kae’s amazing. She keeps putting up huge numbers for someone her size. Just in general, though, blue team did quite well tonight. Red team has another bad week, and it wasn’t even a question whether they’d lose the weigh in. Among them, David is the biggest loser, so he’s safe.

Kim tells the team that Phil (who’s second to Kae in terms of weight loss percentage) and Bryan are carrying the team. So basically she wants them to get rid of Amy, who hasn’t been carrying her weight anyway. She leaves them with the knowledge that she’ll be pissed off if they let it go to a tie.

Votes
David: Amy
Amy: Phil
Phil: Amy
Bryan: Phil

And it’s a tie. Wow, now that I wasn’t expecting. Dumb dumb dumb. They must be praying the team game is ending very soon. Since they won the weigh in, the blue team will decide who goes home. Pretty easy decision here. It would be monumentally stupid for the red team to get rid of Phil, so it works in the blue team’s favor to do so, and in the process they get rid of the biggest threat, both in terms of the team and in terms of the long-term individual game. As a team, they decided to vote out Phil. Whether at their own hands or due to a shift to an individual game, red team is done.

Phil’s down from his starting weight of 403 pounds to 295 pounds today for a total of 108 pounds.

Beauty and the Geek 4 Episode 5

In Beauty and the Geek 4 episode 4, Jesse and Erin got their revenge, sending Rebecca and Will to the elimination room. Sam also got duped by his partner into sending an allegedly strong team, but the team that everyone feared proved so bad at Q&A that it didn’t matter anyway because Rebecca and Will didn’t get a single quesiton right, and as a result were eliminated. This breakup of the couple should benefit the house and removes one person who’s not there for the right reasons, while it may get the other one on the right track (but I doubt it). Sam’s obviously upset by this.

The beauties go back to school for reading, writing, and arithmetic. The geeks’ challenge is a surprise, but before that, it’s geek makeover day. Let’s find out who the ringers are who geeked up specifically for the show, as well as how much the actual geeks can improve.

Jesse’s mom cuts his hair. David wants whatever’s most efficient. John seems willing to change but doesn’t know how he wants to change. Shay tells Joshua he’s probably going to have to get rid of everything he has.

More than one of the geeks shops at the discount rack. David says he doesn’t want jeans, so they make him wear jeans. Then there’s hair coloring and body hair removal.

Not so sure about the blonde look on Jesse, but he looks pretty good. Minus the glasses, plus a shave and new hairstyle, David looks a lot better. William looks as good as can be expected, but Jen’s not impressed because she doesn’t like him anyway. Joshua’s still a geek but an improved geek. Nicole had a great makeover. Luke, who looked good to begin with, is improved as well. For John, all it took was the loss of the shaggy hair and glasses, and he’s easily one of the best looking guys in the house.

It’s announced that the next day there will be a prom. The geeks must ask dates and will go to prom with anyone other than their partner. Nicole can ask another geek. Sam can’t go, and one other beauty will be left out as well. Yet another problem with this year’s twist, whether it creates some drama or not.

Luke asks Erin right away. Jesse asks Natalie. Dave thinks Nicole’s going to ask him, but she asks John, so Dave asks Katie. William asks Jasmine. Shay’s the one who gets left behind.

While everybody else is in the hottub, Sam’s studying. Not so much to learn something but because he wants to win. The next day, they find out what the challenge is. They have to be a teacher for a class of little kids, to be judged by a principal. Jen has no clue what she’s doing. Erin, who didn’t even open the book, knows where the east and west coasts are, and that’s about it. Katie’s as clueless as Jen. Jasmine’s pretty much on the same level as the kids. Sam doesn’t really know what he’s doing but has the personality to get by and impress the kids. Shay similarly uses her personality and interacts with the kids to do a good job. The winner of the challenge is Shay.

Geeks must mingle and campaign with the students at the dance. The geek who gets the most votes wins the challenge. Luke’s a little too comfortable interacting with strangers, as is John. Dave’s pretty comfortable but not particularly interesting. John ends up winning the most votes, which was pretty obvious.

John sends Sam & Nicole to the elimination room. Sam takes it well. Shay sends Katie & Luke because they need to be there least. Joshua is dumb and says he considered sending Jasmine & David due to lack of growth. Valid point or not, there’s no need to risk making enemies like that.

Sam gets the first question right, and Katie gets her much harder question right as well. Sam gets his second question right, and Katie again gets a much harder question but misses it this time. Nicole gets her first question right, and Luke gets his right as well (again, much more difficult). Nicole gets probably the hardest question her and Sam have gotten all along correct, so Luke and Katie have been eliminated. I’m calling foul based on these questions. Sam & Nicole got very simple questions, whereas Luke & Katie got questions that confused both beauties and geeks alike. Anything to keep a twist alive I suppose.

Survivor South Africa: Malaysia Episode 8

In Survivor South Africa: Malaysia episode 7, one of the luckiest Survivors ever, Lisa, who skated by for weeks with everybody complaining about her being lazy, finally bit the dust and was voted out as she should have been in episode 3.

With Hein’s assurance, Bajau eats the last of the goat, despite the fact that it’s got maggots crawling around in it. Over on Iban, Dyke manages to catch a stingray. Both he and Hein are safe for the foreseeable future because they are able to provide. After the merge, however, one of them will be easy enough to sacrifice, most likely Dyke.

For the reward challenge, tribes must swim out into the ocean and retrieve puzzle pieces. The last swimmer on each tribe will solve the puzzle. Reward is a feast: pork chops, potato salad, chicken, vegetables, and beer. Lorette sits out for Bajau. Grant takes a bit of a lead over Amanda in the first round. Hein extends the lead in round two but injures his ankle in the process. Irshaad and Mandla both decide not to take their masks with them, costing each of them time. It costs Mandla more, though, as he gives the lead to Iban. Dyke laps Mandla and begins work on the puzzle. Angela gets back and starts jumping up and down when she thinks she’s won, directing Dyke’s attention her way. She didn’t have the right answer but was close enough to give Dyke an idea of what he needed to do. With that information, Dyke manages to solve the puzzle and wins reward.

Hein continues to hobble around on his sprained ankle. He’s better off just resting and recovering. The tribe seems to be trying to help him out, but they’re not really equipped to do the work. Grant sees this as an opportunity to get rid of a threat. After waking up the next morning, he says his foot’s 75% better, which is problematic for Grant, who’s been playing a stupid game all along anyway.

Irshaad’s strategy is to get close to Dyke. Amanda and Angie seem to want to just get closer to each other, but the problem is neither of them are particularly strong, either physically or strategically.

The communique says strength is king and two people must go, so both tribes go with their default choices. Bajau picks Mandla and Grant (because Hein is injured), and Iban picks the two guys Dyke and Irshaad. They’re all taking this literally, and luckily for them that’s how it was intended to be taken. The challenge is to dive through the hole in the rafts, untie and retrieve a treasure chest, saw through a mast underwater, and also retrieve the flag. Bajau takes an early lead and never looks back. Bajau wins immunity. Angie will be happy, as she was looking forward to a loss.

Irshaad has accepted his fate as the person to be eliminated. The girls are definitely not going to to keep Irshaad around, and Dyke’s not going to risk a tie for Irshaad. This does make them extremely vulnerable and weak when it comes to challenges, however.

Votes:
Irshaad
Irshaad
Angie
Irshaad

Irshaad has been eliminated by a vote of 3-1. The girls got what they wanted, but they’re just lucky next week is the merger. The interesting thing about this is that it does tie things 4-4 between ex-Iban and ex-Bajau, oddly enough.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another recap of Survivor South Africa: Malaysia episode 9.

Beauty and the Geek 4 Episode 4

In episode 3, Will decided to be an idiot and win a challenge he didn’t need to win, which pretty much meant he was screwing himself over no matter who he picked. His partner got to keep her boytoy, and while Hollie and Josh were eliminated, Erin and Jesse still want revenge.

We start off with Rebecca picking up right where she left off, getting into bed with her “distraction.” Not shy about this fact, they wake up Nicole, who gets up and leaves and starts crying. She worries about what people will think about her, but I don’t think anyone has a problem with her. She comes to the conclusion that Rebecca is the problem, making another person who wants to get rid of Will/Rebecca.

The challenges for the week were picked by the public on The CW website based on their favorite of three choices. For the beauties: rocket science, computer science, and social science. For the geeks: massage by geek, fashion by geek, and body by geek. They don’t tell them which challenges are chosen, so they have to study for all of them.

Shay tries to teach Joshua how to squeeze his butt cheeks together, which goes over as well as can be expected. He’s the Richard of the show, minus the ADD. Will and Rebecca hope for the massage challenge since she’s in school for massage. Luke reveals he doesn’t have any use for that team either.

America has indeed chosen massage. Big surprise. Chicks with fake boobs in bikinis. Shay’s full of confidence, saying her partner’s probably going to suck at this. Each geek must massage each beauty (Sam included) for three minutes and will be judged on how they do. Dave uses the typewriter technique. Because his mother likes to be massaged that way. William’s a scratcher. Somebody goes a little too high when massaging their legs. Three people tied for second place, one point away from the winner. Will, John, and Joshua came in second. The winner of the geek challenge is Jesse, which was way too obvious because they made such a big deal about how they were afraid of Will winning.

Rebecca breaks down crying already, even though she hasn’t even competed in her challenge yet. After the challenge, Will goes to Erin to try to plead his case. She takes offense because he kept putting it off until after Jesse won the challenge. Not letting himself get down, Will believes Rebecca’s serious about the challenge, as we go to a scene of her wasting her time with Sam. Sam said earlier he felt bad about Nicole being upset, but he’s still ignoring her and not bother to study with her.

For the beauties, America has chosen rocket science. Each beauty must assemble and launch a rocket. Like the last challenge that increased Rebecca’s odds of staying in the house, this challenge increases Sam’s, as he’s the clear favorite here. This is an example of where the male beauty is unfair. Sam wins the challenge, coming in ahead of Rebecca, meaning if she goes home, it’s ultimately his fault. But better her than him I suppose. If nothing else, it does at least give him the opportunity to choose Rebecca’s opponents. Nicole gives him advice of who to pick, telling him to send someone she thinks can beat them (but telling Sam she thinks they can’t).

Jesse picks Will and Rebecca. Rebecca says it’s about revenge, but Erin denies it. Sam chooses William and Jen, as Nicole suggested. They must again study all three subjects. Rebecca starts crying in her confessional (again), saying she needs this change. Apparently making out with Sam counts as change. People volunteer to help Jen because she actually tried to do something to get to know them. Rebecca’s crying (it’s like watching Amber in BB8) that nobody wants to help her. Jasmine tells Will to get people to help, but Rebecca refuses to let him.

Jen gets her first question right, but Rebecca misses hers. Jen gets her second question wrong, as does Rebecca, giving Jen a 1-0 lead. William gets his first question right, but Will misses his. Rebecca and Will have been eliminated. He played too hard, and she was more interested in a guy. A fitting boot, one everybody but Sam will be happy with. Rebecca feels they were setup, which they were (just not by Sam), but considering they didn’t get a single question right, it really doesn’t matter who they went up against.

Regis Philbin Hosting Million Dollar Password

Well, it was only a matter of time before this happened. CBS will be updating the game show Password and has brought Regis Philbin to host it. The network has ordered 6 episodes of the series. Those of you paying attention a few years back saw ABC run Regis ragged in “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” by airing it almost every damn night.
