Simon Cowell Quits American Idol

Speculation has been building for a while, and Simon Cowell confirmed it today. He will be leaving American Idol after this season. I’ll still watch for as long as it takes everybody else to stop watching, but it certainly will not be as interesting.

Instead, Simon plans to be a judge and producer on X-Factor, which will be coming to America next year after its success in Britain. Fox also has the rights to this new show from Simon Cowell, and it will no doubt be a huge hit when it premieres.

X-Factor is pretty much American Idol with a handful of changes, such as allowing groups and older people to sing.

David Hasselhoff Leaves America’s Got Talent

In the latest change to the ever revolving cast of America’s Got Talent, David Hasselhoff will be leaving America’s Got Talent.

“I am proud that I was part of making America’s Got Talent the No. 1 rated show for the past four summers. It’s been a rewarding experience and now I’m thrilled to be able to follow my dream to do my own TV show, which will be announced very shortly,” Hasselhoff told People.

David is the second judge to leave the show. Brandy was on for season 1 before being replaced by Sharon Osbourne. The show has also seen the departure of two hosts, Regis Philbin and Jerry Springer. It took Idol 8 seasons to lose more than just a Dunkleman.

NBC is currently searching for Hasselhoff’s replacement for when the show returns this summer. No names have been mentioned yet, but I can imagine the 7 Paula Abdul fans are salivating at the potential. Whatever happens, I’m cool with it as long as Piers sticks around.

Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains Cast

Survivor season 20 is an all-star season, and the Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains cast of 10 heroes and 10 villains has been revealed.

Heroes
Amanda Kimmel (3rd China, 2nd Micronesia)
Candice Woodcock (8th Cook Islands)
Cirie Fields (4th Panama, 3rd Micronesia)
Colby Donaldson (2nd Australian Outback, 12th All-Stars)
James Clement (7th China, 7th Micronesia)
Jessica “Sugar” Kiper (3rd Gabon)
JT Thomas (winner Tocantins)
Rupert Boneham (9th Pearl Islands, 4th All-Stars)
Stephenie LaGrossa (7th Palau, 2nd Guatemala)
Tom Westman (winner Palau)

Villains
Benjamin “Coach” Wade (5th Tocantins)
Boston Rob Mariano (10th Marquesas, 2nd All-Stars)
Courtney Yates (2nd China)
Danielle DiLorenzo (2nd Panama)
Jerri Manthey (8th Australian Outback, 10th All-Stars)
Parvati Shallow (6th Cook Islands, winner Micronesia)
Randy Bailey (8th Gabon)
Russell Hantz (3rd Samoa)
Sandra Diaz (winner Pearl Islands)
Tyson Apostol (8th Tocantins)

First thing we see is four winners. JT is forgettable but likeable enough to possibly go a long way. Sandra could last a while considering she’s not a threat. Tom is likely to go early as a physical, albeit not mental, threat. Parvati proved to be a smooth operator in Micronesia, but I would expect her to be underestimated regardless.

Then we get into people who should have won but didn’t, generally thanks to bitter juries. Colby, although for being dumb enough to throw away the game, he deserved to lose. Stephenie controlled her second season, but it could be argued that her “fame” amongst the newbies was a major contributing factor. Either way, I’m just glad Bobby Jon isn’t coming back. That’s all I need is to listen to him whine about how Stephenie lied to him once 5 years ago. Boston Rob owned All-Stars, but at least his wife was a useful player and an acceptable winner (too bad she’s not coming back and going on the heroes side against him). Unlike last season where Russell, the dominant player who was the only reason to watch each week, lost because a bunch of idiots voted for somebody who did nothing instead.

Of the 20, 9 of them will be receiving their third shot. I can’t say as I’m opposed to it, though. At least they know they have a good cast.

Okay now. Candice? A hero? Granted, she wasn’t exactly a villain either, so I guess they just stuck her somewhere randomly, but she’s the one who got sent to Exile again and again and again because Ozzy and his crew were whining that she flipped on them. Then there’s Cirie. I guess she could be considered a hero seeing as she survived despite being so far out of her element, but we’re stretching things a bit to get to that conclusion.

On the other side, there’s Danielle. Whether she’s a hero or a villain or whatever, I had to look her up. Then you have people like Courtney and Randy, who were not so much villains as just annoying. And of course there are people who are just mentally unstable (Coach).

The Biggest Loser Season 9 Episode 1

The Biggest Loser is back for season 9 (Couples 3) with a new cast of 11 teams of two.

Their first test is going to be to weigh-in in front of their hometowns. Apparently, this is some big deal, as compared to taking their shirts off in front of 10 million people.

Daris: 346 pounds
Cheryl: 227 pounds
Orange Total: 573 pounds

Patti: 243 pounds
Stephanie: 264 pounds
Purple Total: 507 pounds

John: 484 pounds
James: 485 pounds
Brown Total: 969 pounds (heaviest team ever)

Ashley: 374 pounds
Sherry: 218 pounds
Pink Total: 592 pounds

Andrea: 298 pounds
Darrell: 413 pounds
Black Total: 711 pounds

Cherita: 277 pounds
Victoria: 358 pounds
Blue Total: 635 pounds

Migdalia: 265 pounds
Miggy: 240 pounds
Green Total: 505 pounds

Melissa: 233 pounds
Lance: 365 pounds
Red Total: 598 pounds

Koli: 403 pounds
Sam: 372 pounds
Grey Total: 775 pounds

Sunshine: 275 pounds
O’Neal: 389 pounds
Yellow Total: 664 pounds

Maria: 281 pounds
Mike: 526 pounds (heaviest contestant ever)
White Total: 801 pounds

The teams arrive at the gym and get on their team-colored mats. The first challenge starts now. Well, we know one thing for sure. They won’t be doing a one mile run that hospitalizes more than one of them. They will be biking instead. Their challenge will be to cover the distance of a marathon, 26.2 miles, between them. The first nine teams earn a spot in the house. The two last teams will be asked to leave immediately. The team that wins will get immunity.

They are starting off as the sickest group of contestants ever (again), so the medical staff is on hand. Green team hits 9 miles with grey on their heels. They are miles ahead of everybody else. Grey is hoping that green will run out of steam, but they just keep going. Migdalia & Miggy win immunity. Koli & Sam are right behind them. The other teams are as much as 14 miles behind them. Andrea & Darrell finish third. Daris & Cheryl place fourth. Yellow and blue are bringing up the rear. Cherita says this is worse than child birth pain. She wants to keep going regardless, but Dr. H insists she stop and pulls her off the bike. Ashley & Sherry place fifth. Lance & Melissa are behind them. Michael & Linda are next, followed by John & James. That leaves one spot left, which will obviously go to the purple team, just about a mile away. Patti & Stephanie take the final spot.

Cherita & Victoria and Sunshine & O’Neal place in the bottom two. It’s time for Allison to say goodbye. So what’s the twist? Surely they’re not going home already. Bob and Jillian tell them they’re going home for 30 days, but they will be coming back after that. During that month, Jillian and Bob will help them. The catch: the team that loses the most will be coming back to compete.

Bob and Jillian are going to train together again. Before they even touch anybody, they’ve already got various stuff coming out of their bodies.

James is limited in what he can do due to a bad knee from an old football injury (not that the 300+ pounds of excess weight has helped that any).

At the weigh-in, one team will fall below the yellow line, and one person from that team will be eliminated.

Migdalia: 249 pounds (-16, 6.43%)
Miggy: 240 pounds (-13, 5.73%)
Green Total: 489 pounds (-29, 5.74%, immune)

Sam: 354 pounds (-18, 4.84%)
Koli: 374 pounds (-29, 7.20%)
Grey Total: 728 pounds (-47, 6.06%)

Cheryl: 213 pounds (-14, 6.17%)
Daris: 317 pounds (-29, 8.38%)
Orange Total: 530 pounds (-43, 7.50%)

Andrea: 284 pounds (-14, 4.70%)
Darrell: 413 pounds (-30, 7.26%)
Black Total: 667 pounds (-44, 6.19%)

James: 462 pounds (-23, 4.74%)
John: 461 pounds (-23, 4.75%)
Brown Total: 923 pounds (-46, 4.75%)

Melissa: 214 pounds (-19, 8.16%)
Lance: 344 pounds (-21, 5.75%)
Red Total: 558 pounds (-40, 6.69%)

Patti: 220 pounds (-23, 9.47%)
Stephanie: 246 pounds (-18, -6.82%)
Purple Total: 466 pounds (-41, 8.09%)

Patti has set a new record for any female contestant in one week.

Ashley: 353 pounds (-21, 5.62%)
Sherry: 201 pounds (-17, 7.80%)
Pink Total: 554 pounds (-38, 6.42%)

Maria: 268 pounds (-13, 4.63%)
Michael: 492 pounds (-34, 6.46%)
White Total: 760 pounds (-47, 5.82%)

Michael has set a new record for any contestant in one week.

That puts John & James below the yellow line. Well, this is an unusual scenario. Typically, they will keep around somebody over 460 pounds. This time, they’ve got a pair of twins at that weight within 1 pound of each other. How do you choose? John offers to sacrifice himself because he doesn’t think his brother can do it at home seeing as he’s got a bad knee. James responds that John will go further, and James won’t have to worry about a job and a baby.

Votes
Migdalia & Miggy: John
Andrea & Darrell: James
Melissa & Lance: James
Ashley & Sherry: James
Patti & Stephanie: James
Maria & Michael: James

With 5 votes, James is not The Biggest Loser. From his starting weight of 485 pounds, James is now down to 385 pounds in two months. His wife has also started a weight loss program since he’s returned home and has lost 24 pounds.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The Biggest Loser Season 9 Episode 2, which airs Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.

The Bachelor Season 14 Episode 1

Jake Pavelka was eliminated in The Bachelorette 5 because, well, we never got an actual answer. Anyway, regardless of that rejection, he was back on a plane soon thereafter to be the knight in shining armor and warn Jillian that Wes is a putz. Of course, that did entirely no good because she still chose to allow that joke to continue for one more round. Anyway, the net result of all this seemingly scripted drama is that Jake is back as The Bachelor 14.

The cast of 25 women who will be competing for him are:

Alexa, 25, an entrepreneur from Galloway, OH
Ali, 25, an advertising account manager from Williamstown, MA
Ashleigh, 25, an account manager from North Potomac, MD
Ashley, 29, a teacher from Pittsburgh, PA
Caitlyn, 24, a spokesmodel from Winfield, IL
Channy, 29, a mortgage loan officer from Santa Rosa, CA
Christina, 25, a restaurant manager from San Diego, CA
Corrie, 23, a wardrobe consultant from Kissimmee, FL
Elizabeth, 29, a nanny from Imperial, NE
Elizabeth, 29, a Captain in the Air National Guard, from Washington, DC
Ella, 30, a hair stylist from Lafollette, TN
Emily, 23, a fit model from West Chester, OH
Gia, 26, a swimsuit model from New York, NY
Jessie, 25, a cosmetic sales manager from Oakville, Ontario, Canada
Kathryn, 25, a corporate flight attendant from Lexington, KY
Kimberly, 24, an NBA dancer from Norman, OK
Kirsten, 25, a waitress from Aurora, CO
Michelle, 26, an office manager from Anaheim, CA
Rozlyn, 28, a model/makeup artist from Richmond, VA
Sheila, 25, a commercial pilot from San Juan Capistrano, CA
Stephanie, 24, a dance teacher from Morris, IL
Tenley, 25, a college admissions representative from Newberg, OR
Tiana, 31, a medical technician from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Valishia, 32, a homemaker from Carlsbad, CA
Vienna, 23, a marketing representative from Sanford, FL

Alexa likes straddling… motorcycles. Tenley is already divorced at 25, so now she’s looking to get married again. Elizabeth is a pilot, and the greatest loves of her life have all been pilots. Christina says she’s a little bitchy. Vienna dresses her dog. Elizabeth plans to have a big problem with a guy kissing all the other girls. Ella has a son named Ethan. Despite her success as a model, Gia has difficulty meeting men and has only had three boyfriends.

Channy wants Jake to land on her landing strip. Well, that’s probably more than he wanted to know.

Ella isn’t hiding anything on their first conversation. She’s a mom to a 7 year old son who wants to be a pilot. Her son wanted him to have his lucky airplane.

Ashley decides to change into a stewardess outfit. So nanny Elizabeth decides to one up her and brings out a football. Eventually, this leads to a blondes vs. brunettes football game. In heels and gowns.

Michelle will die if she doesn’t get the first impression rose. She’s not shy to show her desperation. After an hour or so, she’s crying. Really now?

Kathryn has a pretend fiance. Whatever that is.

Dance teacher Stephanie takes the opportunity to teach Jake how to dance.

Jillian and Ed arrive at the mansion because they’re a “successful couple” from last season. A little too early to be dragging Trista and Ryan out I guess. They’ve brought their notepads with them.

Christina decides to play airplane. This is a game for children between the ages of 4 and 7, but it should certainly help her stand out.

Tenley wants a kiss already. Unless it’s too forward. Yeah, it really is too forward, but Jake plays along.

Ed likes nanny Elizabeth. Jillian likes Ella. They also like Sheila and Kathryn. Who should he send home? Michelle. She’s emotional. That goes without saying.

The first impression rose goes to Tenley. Memo to the other girls to start kissing.

Jake says that Ashley is the most positive person he’s ever met, and her smiling is contagious. Vienna is playful, although the conversation didn’t go very deep. Michelle is already overwhelmed, and this process may not be the best idea since it gets harder.

Elizabeth (NE)

With that, the ten girls who have been eliminated are: Alexa, Caitlyn, Channy, Elizabeth (DC), Emily, Kimberly, Kirsten, Sheila, Stephanie, and Tiana. This will not end well. Michelle seems like a nice enough girl, but she’s so far invested into this already that she’s going to fall the hardest of the lot. Granted, as drama goes, the fact that a producer is sleeping with one of the girls should be able to top that.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The Bachelor Season 14 Episode 2, which airs Monday at 8/7c on ABC.

Undercover Boss Premieres After the Super Bowl

Since 2001, CBS has had three big reality TV shows, but has failed to get any new ones off the ground. It looks like they’re serious about changing that with Undercover Boss.

I’d have predicted the post-Super Bowl slot would go to Survivor in an effort to revive the fading (albeit still top 20) granddaddy of reality TV, particularly since it’s season 20 with a returning cast of all stars. Instead, the time slot will go to new reality show Undercover Boss.

In this new show, senior management in some of America’s largest corporations will get trained in entry level jobs within the companies they run.

Following its Super Bowl Sunday February 7 debut, Undercover Boss will remain on Sundays. It will take over the 9/8c time slot, giving it a nice reality lead in in The Amazing Race, although it will also put it right up against The Celebrity Apprentice.

As for Cold Case, which most likely will not last another season anyway, it will be bumped down an hour to 10/9c.

Survivor: Samoa Winner

Following Brett’s immunity win, the Foa Foa 4 remained together and voted out Shambo in Survivor: Samoa Episode 14.

Russell complains that he’s there with a bunch of misfits who are laying about and complaining about the harsh conditions as if they’re surprised.

Natalie gets a warning from Russell that she’s probably the next one to go if Brett wins immunity. The guys would rather stay together so that they can get rid of Brett. Russell doesn’t understand this mindset how a guy who two episodes ago probably hadn’t had more than five minutes of airtime the whole season all of a sudden is being put up on this pedestal because he’s won the last two challenges. The sad thing is, if he keeps it up, he’s got a good shot to win, regardless of not having had anything resembling a strategy.

For the immunity challenge, they will race across a series of obstacles, grab a bag of puzzle pieces, and climb a steep wall where they will solve a puzzle. Russell is the first to grab his puzzle pieces, showing no signs of struggle on these obstacles. Everybody else is pretty much neck and neck behind him, but it all just comes down to who can solve this puzzle fastest. Brett wins immunity.

Russell would like to keep Natalie around because there’s no way she could beat him. His suggestion is that Jaison is the weakest link (even more than Natalie) and checked out a long time ago. Meanwhile, Mick might be good to pick off because he’s a threat.

So Russell tells Mick to get rid of Jaison, and he tells Jaison to get rid of Mick. That should put control squarely in Russell’s hands as to who goes home.

With the remainder of the tribe going with the strategy of keeping the strongest around, Jaison has been voted off the island. Jaison is now mad at Russell and hoping Brett wins.

Russell promises Brett he’ll take him to the final three if he wins immunity. Brett promises him the same in return.

The final immunity challenge is to balance a statue on a pole. At set intervals, they will add another section to that pole. Mick is the first person out of the challenge. Natalie is right behind him. The other two keep going and make their way through some wind at 6 feet. They move on to hit 7 feet. Brett drops his statue. Russell wins immunity.

Brett’s days are numbered. While he gets credit for keeping himself alive much longer than the rest of his tribe, it would have been a waste of a season if he ended up winning solely because of how stacked the jury is.

In Russell’s opinion, he just won the game. Hard to argue with that.

Mick’s getting paranoid that he’s about to be stabbed in the back. That would be quite a stupid move.

Russell tells Brett to vote for Mick. Maybe they can force a tie.

At tribal council, there’s talk about how Brett deserves to be there more than the others because he won a couple challenges. Anyway… we all know this is just an attempt at creating false drama.

By a vote of 3-1, Brett has been voted off the island.

Natalie seems content just to be in the final three.

Even though they’re in the final three and should just be relaxing and enjoying their feast, Russell’s still playing the game. He wants to get into the heads of the other two before they head off to tribal council.

Russell says it would be a shame if Mick or Natalie beat him. For that matter, it would be a shame if anybody else beat him either. If somebody had gotten rid of him, that’s one thing, but he’s clearly played the best game. Now it’s just a question of whether anyone’s too bitter to accept that. There’s no question he’s stabbed a bunch of people in the back and lied to everybody.

All three of those who remain voted for every person on the jury.

Mick wants to receive votes because he was mister nice guy.

Natalie just says she’s grown through this experience and appreciates everybody.

Russell, however, talks about how he played the game strategically, lying wherever necesary (and sometimes when not necessary). If he’s been outwitted or outplayed, feel free to not vote for him. But he hasn’t been.

Jaison’s up first. He offers his former tribemates the opportunity to tell the jury who they really are. Natalie says she’s unemployed at this time. Russell says he’s a businessman and is successful. Mick says he’s in substantial debt from medical school. Jaison says Natalie made good money, Russell’s probably the richest guy there, and doctors make a lot. Nobody is broke, and they should look to other criteria.

Shambo calls Mick’s gameplay feckless. I see somebody got a thesaurus for Christmas. As for Natalie, the word for her is coattail. Natalie says that the aggressive women were the ones who got eliminated early, which is true, although it probably doesn’t help her cause any. Shambo’s closing statement is that she has no intention of voting for either of them.

Brett asks what a “bro date” with Mick would be like.

Kelly starts with Natalie, saying they were very similar, but Natalie was never on the field (in that respect, they were very similar). Russell lied, cheated, and stole. Is that him in real life? He would replace those words with honor, integrity, and loyalty.

Monica gives Russell credit for key moves, but she missed passion from the other two. Why do the others not deserve the money? Mick doesn’t know what Natalie did, aside from align with Russell. He doesn’t like Russell’s lying or (well deserved) ego. In response, Russell says that neither of the honest people there seemed to mind when he was a snake, at least not until now.

Dave wants to ask about chances. Mick says 20-25%. Natalie says 30-40%. Russell responds 55%. I expected more out of him.

Laura asks what Russell learned about her that enabled him to beat her. He knew she was the biggest threat on Galu.

Why should John write Mick’s name down? He’s got solid character.

Erik just wants to hear himself talk and will not be allowing any response, which is arguably the same attitude that got him voted out so early. Mick did nothing with his leadership role on his team. Russell played an unethical game. Natalie may be weak and undeserving, but perhaps that’s better than lying, cheating, and stealing. Because he supports weak and undeserving as traits, Erik will vote for Natalie. All that rambling to arrive at that rather unusual destination.

The Survivor: Samoa winner is Natalie White. I’m stunned, not just by the results but by the fact that it was a blowout for somebody who didn’t do much, but I guess I shouldn’t expect anything more from a jury that consists of people who were stupid enough to throw away an 8-4 lead. As bitter juries go, this one looks like it just took the cake.

What I find most interesting is that this group of misfit sore losers is giving us a lecture on morality and not lying. Pot, meet kettle. Apparently, it was okay for them to ostracize Shambo and vote out Erik for no good reason, but it was not okay for Russell to play the game. John and Shambo remain the only two people from Galu with half a brain.

If he took Jaison and Shambo with him, the jury tells Russell (reluctantly) that he would have narrowly won.

Russell’s not done playing. He offers to buy the title of sole survivor for $10,000. Jeff and the audience agree he played the better game.

The three top vote getters for America’s vote are Russell, Shambo, and Brett. Brett is out. The winner of the player of the season award and the $100,000 prize that goes along with it is Russell. At least some people can appreciate his game. Jeff’s still trying to figure out how the heck Russell did not win.

Survivor is coming back for season 20: Heroes vs. Villains. 20 former castaways will be returning when the new season premieres on February 11.
