The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 6

Damon managed to escape from his cell in The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 5, and Elena discovered that something’s not quite right about Stefan.

We pick up where we left off. Elena’s question to Stefan: what are you? He doesn’t really answer because she already knows. Is she ready for everything she knows to change? Okay, then. He’s a vampire. This response is enough to get her to run away. When he corners her, he tells her he’s innocent and that Damon’s the killer, but begs her not to tell anybody because knowing is dangerous.

Back to Damon chowing down on Vicki. He has a problem. Where’s his ring? He’ll be doing just fine until the sun comes up.

Sunlight aside, Stefan dismisses all the legends about vampires as merely myths. There are no other vampires in town, not any more. Once upon a time, the town was aware of vampires, and it didn’t end well for them. Elena can’t promise that she won’t tell anybody, so Stefan asks her to spend the day with him.

The sheriff and her guys show up at the scene of the cemetery in Damon’s aftermath of burnt corpses. The story that the news will run: drug deal gone bad. Vicki is not amongst the dead because Damon dragged her back home, where he has decided to let her drink from him and turn her into his new girl toy.

Stefan and Elena go to the middle of nowhere, or a place he says used to be his home, back in 1864 when he first turned 17 (and when he first met Katherine).

Going back to the past, we find out why Stefan turned into a vampire shortly after he met Katherine. That reason being that she herself was a vampire. Being a vampire, she was able to control both Stefan’s and Damon’s minds, forcing each of them to keep their relationship with her a secret. Forever. Or at least until her untimely burning at the hands of an angry mob.

The reason they’ve headed to Stefan’s childhood home is because that’s where the ring is. Either he gives Damon back his ring, or Elena’s in danger.

Damon’s not looking for love. It’s painful, pointless, and overrated, even if he’s still not over Katherine 145 years later. After listening to Vicki whine for a while, he’s decided she is so damaged and does not have one hint of self esteem. He thinks he knows what can help her. Death. Then he snaps her neck. Well, that was interesting. After she dies, Vicki wakes up and is told that now she has to feed to complete the process. Perhaps she should stop by Jeremy’s house. She’s got two choices: feed on human blood or die. Damon shows up to look for Stefan. He may come in, seeing as he’s been invited and all. For future reference, Elena may consider being careful who she invites in the house.

Vicki’s starting to remember and runs away, but Stefan can track her (for that matter, so can Logan with the watch he grabbed from Jeremy). He informs her that she’s got a choice to make. Then he gets shot by Logan with a wooden bullet, which won’t kill him but will stun him. Neither Vicki nor Damon want to see him get a stake shoved through him, though, so Damon comes to his rescue. As Damon’s grabbing his ring back from Stefan, Vicki has found a target to feed on, Logan. Then Damon grabs the watch as Vicki flees.

After learning that Vicki has become a vampire, Elena tells Stefan she’ll keep his secret, but she can’t be with him.

Survivor: Samoa Episode 5

Galu finally lost something, and Yasmin was unsurprised to be the first boot from their tribe in Survivor: Samoa Episode 4.

Shambo’s surprised that she was the only person to vote on Yasmin’s side.

They’re told they have to keep something down, which means a gross food challenge. For Foa Foa, this is already a cause for divide. Liz says she’s worried about Ashley during this challenge, which leads to Russell H starting to turn on her. It’s a food reward. Get the gross smoothie down, and you win a barbeque. Kelly, Laura, and John sit out for Galu. Shambo and Jaison get a giant clam mixed with Jeff’s choice of octopus, sea snails, and noni juice. Shambo easily finishes as Jaison struggles to get it down. Russell goes against Russell for the jelly fish special mixed with milk. Russell S does fine, and after struggling, Russell H chugs it. Brett and Mick get giant clams and sea cucumbers with milk. Both do okay. Monica and Liz get sea urchin, and both of them do fine. Ashley and Dave get sea slug guts, which Jeff suggests may be the worst thing out there. Nice and chunky. Ashley can’t finish as Liz feared. Galu wins reward. They will be sending Shambo over to Foa Foa, to which she responds that’s not very fair. Russell declines to spread the love, and Shambo will miss out on the reward.

Ashley realizes she screwed up, so Natalie pretends that nothing’s wrong.

Before getting to the meal, Russell explains why he sent Shambo over to Foa Foa. She lost the chicken, but this should clean her slate. Then Russell tries to start the fire. Dave believes that he can start the fire, but he refuses to do so unless Russell asks. So Russell refuses to ask, although he eventually gives in.

Shambo, who asked for a group hug upon arrival at Foa Foa, has decided to share the clues to the hidden idol with their entire tribe. Not that it matters since both of them have already been found. Liz thinks that either Ben or Russell have the one from theirs, so she confronts Russell and calls him a liar when he denies it. She’s definitely his next target.

It’s raining and raining. As Erik warned, the choice of comfort over the function of the tarp means that all the blankets are wet and hence largely useless.

When Shambo returns, she gets some minor acknowledgement from the person nearest to her, Erik, but that’s about it. In their defense, everybody is barely functioning and just trying to break through the shivering, not that I expect their welcome would be much warmer otherwise.

For the immunity challenge, one man and one woman from each tribe will hold on to a rope connected to a net while members of the other tribe shoot coconuts into that net. Last net standing wins. Galu sits out Dave, Shambo, and Brett. Liz and Russell hold the net for Foa Foa, while Russell and Laura hold for Galu. All I can say is Galu needs to start losing some people because I keep hearing names I never heard before. Galu is kicking the crap out of Foa Foa as per usual. In the middle of the onslaught, Jeff points out that Ashley hasn’t made a single shot yet. Russell H falters and is eliminated. That means they’re going to all pile on Liz. She keeps fighting but eventually buckles. Galu wins immunity.

Jaison says things aren’t looking good any more. So apparently they were looking good when they lost 4 people in a row.

Contributing to their misery is the fact that it’s been raining for two days straight. Russell poses a question: does anybody want to go home. Despite their whining, nobody’s ready to volunteer. Because it’s raining, however, they’re hiding under the shelter, which means no strategizing going on before they go to tribal.

The guys should stick together and not vote against each other, so it’s just a question of which girl will end up going home. Russell is bummed out that he can’t talk anyone into voting out Liz. It would be a tough sell regardless, although he could get the two blondes on his side. The logical choice here is Ashley, who has not contributed to the challenges.

At tribal council, Russell claims to trust everybody. Ashley agrees but says she mostly trusts Natalie and Russell. Liz also gives the political answer that she trusts pretty much everybody.

By a unanimous vote, Ashley has been voted off the island. It would have been interesting if they were able to talk strategy and come to a different (and worse) conclusion.

Jake Pavelka Is The Bachelor 14

Jake Pavelka, who returned on The Bachelorette 5 to warn Jillian that Wes is a putz (a warning she ignored and kept Wes around so he could continue promoting his music anyway), has been announced as The Bachelor for season 14.

The show will receive a subtitle of On the Wings of Love, a take on the fact that Jake is a pilot. Seriously?

The Bachelor 14 will premiere on ABC in January 2010.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 Episode 8

Vegas week started in So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 Episode 7, and we get back to the rest of it tonight.

Karen Hauer is in the first group to perform. She’s told she can go and sit down, which apparently means she’s through to the next round. Her husband Matthew is in the next group. He has been cut.

By the end of the first day, Iveta Lukosiute and Willem de Vries are eliminated.

Mollee Gray and Russell Ferguson are in the same group. Mollee is warned that she’s dancing like a little girl. Russell, who’s a krumper with no formal training, is given compliments from the judges. Both of them advance to the next round, although Mollee’s limping as she gets off the stage.

Russell’s group of himself and four contemporary dancers draw a Broadway routine. They are given nothing but positive comments and make it through another round.

Mollee’s group is unaware of whether she will be returning from the hospital or not. After two hours, she returns to say she has a bad sprain but can still dance. They put together a routine where she’s able to dance but spends much of the time sitting. Whatever the routine, it falls flat for the judges, but it’s enough for them to get through the group round.

The next round is Mia time, which this season apparently means meditating and hugging.

Kevin Hunt is in the first group and this year hopes to not get cut on the final day of Vegas again. He moves to the next round after amazing the judges. Mollee and Russell are also safe.

Legacy was given another chance after dancing for his life. He says that something inside of him has changed after working with Mia, and she responds that he’s perfectly imperfect, which translates into a ticket to the next round.

A Tyce Diorio Broadway routine is the next step.

Pauline Mata was also cut on the final day of Vegas previously. During the rehearsal, she lands funny at the end, and ends up with an ankle swollen so bad that she can’t go on stage to perform the routine.

Ashleigh Di Lello has managed to survive this far despite the initial criticism she’s received, although she’s still in her husband Ryan’s shadow. She’s told that she has grown the most this week and gets a unanimous vote from the judges. After his wife makes it through, it’s Ryan Di Lello’s turn, and she’s perfectly fine with him having on as few clothes as possible. Like Ashleigh, he also receives all the votes.

Dominic Pearson was eliminated in Vegas week in season 4 due to an injury. His confidence is soon shattered by the judges, who only give him two votes. Nigel complains that he’s crying, although he’s certainly not the first one to break down tonight.

Pauline is back from the hospital on crutches. She has been told to stay off her sprained ankle for two days. As she waits to find out her fate, the remaining dancers are given one final chance to do a solo before the judges make their decision on the top 20. It seems we’ll have to keep waiting to find out what happens to her because they’re not talking yet.

The Biggest Loser Season 8 Episode 5

In an emotional elimination, Julio was voted out in The Biggest Loser Season 8 Episode 4.

Allison greets the contestants with a bunch of silver platters first thing. It’s blue vs. black. One person will get to pick the teams. The power lies in a simple spin of the wheel. There are 36 spaces on the wheel, one of which contains the power. If you land on the other 35 spaces, you could get any number of things from cash to a 1000 calorie piece of cake. We’ve heard for weeks how this is not about gameplay. Let’s see how true that statement holds. Only Abby declines. For everybody else, it appears that playing the game is now acceptable.

Rudy spins first and gets a piece of cake. Rebecca gets a 280 calorie chocolate donut. Allen lands on a 100 calorie cupcake. Danny gets a much bigger 780 calorie cupcake. Tracey gets the golden ticket? How the…? Okay, now I know somebody’s going to blame her for something here, but they all had their chance as well. Granted, this is spooky. Most people are preparing to dodge out of the way of the lightning.

Back in the house, everybody is preparing for the worst, and here come the waterworks.

Blue Team (Bob): Tracey, Mo, Allen, Liz, Rudy, Rebecca
Black Team (Jillian): Daniel, Shay, Abby, Danny, Amanda, Dina

That leaves only two teams still intact, purple and orange. The others have all been split up, although it looks like it will be a reasonably fair fight, unless an issue of physical strength comes up.

Once that’s over, there’s plenty of time for more whining, but at the end of the day, these people wouldn’t have been happy no matter how the teams were chosen. Jillian intends to just beat her people so that they get over the drama.

Upset over losing Danny, Liz has one focus: get rid of Tracey before she herself is sent home. She’s going to kill herself if she has to. Then she collapses. As she’s recovering, she says that her head’s on straight, which means following her agenda.

Dina’s afraid of jumping on that stool. She doesn’t want Jillian to get mad that she’s wasting time. So… she walks out of the gym. With Rudy’s encouragement, she returns to the gym, where she reluctantly keeps trying.

Sometimes you have to carry your teammates; sometimes they have to carry you. Each team will race up the hill and through some mud to the finish line. The catch: they will be carrying one teammate on a platform. They are allowed to switch out throughout the race. Videos from home are the reward. Tracey and Abby will sit out. Dina agrees to be on the platform for the black team, while Rebecca is on it for the blue team. The blue team’s strategy is to take the early lead because the path can only fit one team. This strategy works. Going through the mud on the second mud pit, Amanda loses her shoe, so she hops on the platform for the black team. Regardless of what else may have happened in the challenge, the end result is unsurprising. The blue team, which had the lead the whole time, retains it to easily win the challenge. Rebecca has opted to give her video to Dina, but she declines, wanting to get on the step on her own.

Liz gets her buddy Danny to see his own video, pretending she wants him to come watch hers with her. He finds out that he’s already an inspiration, and his family is following in his footsteps and also losing weight.

Jillian’s goal at the last chance workout is to get her black team to realize they’re teamed with each other now, not with their prior teammates. Her other goal: get Dina on the platform. Not today.

Bob’s team goes off to 24 Hour Fitness for a change of pace, as he’s hoping to get his team to forget blue vs. black.

It’s time for the weigh-in.

The blue team has fallen below the yellow line. Liz has the highest percentage of weight loss on her team, which makes her immune. It seems a foregone conclusion what’s going to happen from here. However, getting rid of Tracey would not be a smart move because she’s putting up good numbers, but logic doesn’t seem to be the method being used by some of them. Realizing he’s playing a game he never intended to play, Mo is the voice of reason. He’s putting up the lowest numbers, so the logical move here is to get rid of him. The excessively bitter Rebecca isn’t happy with this theory. Liz is thinking about going along with the vote, though, since she thinks Tracey trusts her.

With 4 votes, Coach Mo is not The Biggest Loser. So pretty much I’m going to have to listen to more of this for another week. Mo is down to 76 pounds from a starting weight of 355. He hopes to put some other people on the right path and their own journey.

Hell’s Kitchen Season 6 Winner

Ariel was eliminated in Hell’s Kitchen Season 6 Episode 14, bringing us down to a final two of Dave Levey and Kevin Cottle, one of whom will be the Hell’s Kitchen Season 6 winner.

Their night has just begun. There’s a limo waiting outside for them. They arrive at a hotel just before midnight because Ramsay wants to see them on the roof. Just as I think he’s ready to throw one of them off the roof, he announces a final challenge, giving them 45 minutes to create dishes worthy of Araxi. Kevin will prepare a petite clambake with poached lobster and corn pudding. Dave is cooking a rack of venison with a sour cream and chive parsnip puree.

To win the challenge, they will need to receive three votes. Alain Gayot of Gayot guide books votes for Dave’s dish. Jamie Maw, former food editor of Vancouver Magazine, votes for Dave as well. Tanya Steel, editor in chief of Epicurious, votes for Kevin. Warren Geraghty, executive chef of West Restaurant in Vancouver, also votes for Kevin, which ties them at 2 each. Colman Andrews, the restaurant columnist for Gourmet Magazine, votes for Dave. Dave wins the challenge.

Working on a couple hours sleep, they must now create their own menus for the final service of the season. Kevin gets Heather, while Dave gets Scott. Of course, they’re going to need more help than that. As the challenge winner, Dave will pick first.

Dave’s team: Ariel, Robert, Suzanne
Kevin’s team: Van, Amanda, Sabrina

Kevin’s gone with an elaborate menu, while Dave’s goal is simple cooking that his team can easily pick up.

Kevin’s menu features: caramelized scallops, coffee cured beef tenderloin, and creme brulee trio
Dave’s menu features: wild mushroom risotto, roasted loin of venison, and dark chocolate mousse

Each kitchen will serve 13 tables and 50 diners. Included amongst the diners is Chef James Walt of Araxi Restaurant and Bar, who will be Kevin or Dave’s future employer.

Amanda starts things off on the wrong foot out of the gates. Her scallops are not done yet.

Robert’s fast feet deliver the first appetizer of the evening, risotto that Dave approves.

Back in the red kitchen, Kevin’s still waiting on Amanda’s scallops. How long? Right now. Are they ready? No. So like do you want them cooked or something? Her next attempt at scallops are overcooked. At Ramsay’s suggestion to shake things up, Kevin pulls Amanda off scallops and replaces her with Van. This works. Van delivers scallops, and Amanda does well on risotto.

Meanwhile, Dave’s almost done with his appetizers. Problem is he’s almost out of mushrooms for the risotto. Dave blames Robert, while Robert blames Dave.

Well, it doesn’t look like Amanda did so well on the risotto. A diner rejects it. The rice is not cooked properly. Kevin puts Van in charge of overseeing Amanda.

Ariel misses her meat again, but this time she acknowledges responsibility, saying she has no excuse for overcooking it. She recovers in her next attempt.

Amanda’s still confused, and she seems to be confusing Kevin in the process. He wants medium rare from her, he thinks.

After much yelling, Kevin decides to take a different approach. He calms down and gets his chefs back on track. Once they’re recovering, Kevin wants to do two tables at once in attempt to catch up.

On the other side, the venison is getting messed up. Then they get salmon returned raw.

Kevin catches up and makes a run to finish service right around the same time as Dave.

It’s time for the moment of truth. Whoever’s door opens will win. The Hell’s Kitchen season 6 winner is Dave. Not quite the outcome I was expecting, but he deserves credit for doing what he did with one arm the whole time.

We are expecting Hell’s Kitchen season 7 some time next year, but no additional details are currently available.

Hell’s Kitchen Season 6 Episode 14

Following a disastrous service, Tennille was eliminated in Hell’s Kitchen Season 6 Episode 13. Despite the fake drama, Dave’s wrist was not enough to take him out of the competition, even if he may well screw it up for life.

Under the domes, there are three cuisines from around the world, and each person will be expected to make what they pick. Ariel gets China, Dave gets India (he’s not happy), and Kevin gets Mexico. In the storeroom, the ingredients are set aside for each country. They are given 45 minutes to cook one entree. Dave plans to pick a dish he knows and just add something Indian to it. After 15 minutes, he still hasn’t decided. His main goal is to cook whatever animal India does not worship. At least he didn’t cook the cow, opting for pork instead.

The judges are world reknowned chefs for each type of cuisine. Ariel has cooked, uh, uh, um, noodles with duck. The Mexican cook didn’t think it was too balanced, the Indian chef enjoyed the sweetness, and the Chinese chef thought it was a good try but the sauce was watery. Kevin has cooked orange and cumin marinated pork tenderloin with Mexican chocolate sauce. Oops. He forgot the sauce. This is becoming a pattern. He forgot the garnish on a previous task. The Mexican judge thinks that maybe the sauce would have put him over the top, the Chinese cook loves it, and the Indian cook thought it was an interesting combination. Dave has cooked ming bean puree and a seared pork tenderloin. The pork choice turns out not so good because there are a lot of muslims living in India. The Mexican felt it worked well together, especially considering he hasn’t worked with the spices before, the Chinese chef enjoyed it, and the Indian judge thought it was amazing for a first try.

Dave wins by a unanimous vote. For his reward, each of the chefs will cook their signature dish for him, and he also gets a set of the cookware that they’ve been using in the kitchen. To round out the reward, he will be joined by his sister and fiancee. The punishment for the others is to polish the silverware and then prep for that night’s service.

Tonight is a chance to run the pass. Scott and Heather will fill in where needed.

Dave and Kevin start off with compliments on their appetizers. Then it’s time for one of the chefs to take over.

It’s Kevin’s turn first. He believes he’s been running things all along. He’s off to a strong start. The first sabotage is the substitution of halibut for seabass. This does not get past Kevin. His next test is unplanned: Ariel’s slowing him down on meat. When he receives her lamb, he rejects it. The next time up, she tells him she can’t cut the bone off becase it will ruin the chop. His request to her is obvious. Cut the bone off. When she does this, it ruins the chop. Does she have another lamb? His constant rejection of Ariel’s food is not doing himself any favors because him stopping her is just dragging himself down.

Dave is next. He’s a very intense leader, yelling more than Ramsay does if that’s possible. His quality control test is the substitution of spinach puree for asparagus puree. He tastes it but does not notice. The second sabotage also slips past him. He finally ends up noticing the cold tuna and the unsalted asparagus.

Ariel takes over after him. She thinks she’s gone if she fails, which she probably is. Parsnip puree has been substituted for mashed potatoes, which she’s happy with. The next sabotage dish is salmon substituted for seabass, but this time she notices. Then she starts rattling off orders one after another. Kevin doesn’t know where she’s at. She realizes she’s lost control of the kitchen and blames Kevin for dragging on purpose.

After service is over, each person is asked to name one person they don’t think belongs in the final. Kevin has chosen Ariel because she’s not quite there yet. Ariel has chosen Kevin because of his service while she was at the pass. Dave goes with Ariel because he felt most lost when she was up at the pass.

The first person to advance to the finals is Dave. The second person to advance is Kevin. Ariel has been eliminated.

Heroes Season 4 Episode 5

In Heroes Season 4 Episode 4, Hiro spent his time trying to figure out how to save someone’s life, only to end up disappearing when he was done. Peter, likewise, found himself trying to save lives, while his brother Nathan found himself buried underground.

Sylar has managed to dig himself up from under the ground.

Samuel plans to have a full table by day’s end, refilling his brother’s empty seat.

Claire’s happy to have a normal life for a change. Apparently, jumping out the window and popping her bones back into place are part of that normal life. While she’s saying that, somebody invites her to join a sorority, as if that’s going to make her life more normal.

Sylar has been captured. They are under the impression they can hold him against his will. That should last about as long as he is unable to remember his name or anything else. Dr. Gibson doesn’t want to label him crazy just yet. She’ll take it a step further and unlock his handcuffs, asking to be left alone with him. She promises to put the pieces together and help him figure out who he is. This is not something that sounds like a wise idea.

Speaking of crazy, Emma, the woman who sees sounds as colors, is told that maybe she’s got hysterical blindness. As she’s walking home, she is unable to stop seeing colors, right into the path of a speeding bus, only to be pushed out of the way by Peter in his obsessive saving people job. This act of heroism does not generate a thank you for Peter. What it does is strip away his super speed. In return, he’s got this strange new seeing colors power with questionable usefulness.

Lydia wants to know who the new family member is. Samuel doesn’t know the answer to that question. He just has a feeling. They’ll have to wait and see who joins them first.

The more Claire gets to know her new roommate, the less she wants to know her. Something’s not quite right about this girl.

When he starts to concentrate, Sylar is distracted. The clock on the wall is slower than the doctor’s wristwatch.

Returning to the hospital, Peter runs into Emma again, and it’s there that he realizes she’s deaf. He explains to her about people with abilities, something she knows nothing about. She tells him he’s crazy, as if seeing sounds is normal.

Claire, having visited the sorority house for a get to know you speed dating round with the sisters earlier, has returned only to have to save one of the women from getting whacked by Gretchen.

Dr. Gibson has been sent home. Now it’s time for the bad cop to step in and tell him he’s a watchmaker from Queens who murdered his own mother. The plan now is to get a confession out of him and then throw him down a hole forever. Good luck with that. Feeling threatened, Sylar inadvertently uses his power to throw the guy through the wall. When she gets into her car, Dr. Gibson finds out she’s dealing with a murderer. Nonetheless, an escaped Sylar runs toward her asking for help. She promised.

Claire’s afraid Gretchen’s a wee bit of a stalker, a dangerous one at that. She’s not stalking her because she’s trying to kill her (like Annie). Rather, she’s stalking her because she wants to jump her bones, as if that will make her feel any better. Before they can swap spit any further, the sorority shows up to invite them to join.

It turns out the sorority girl, Rebecca, has been sent to Claire by her uncle Samuel. Their goal is to push others away and isolate Claire. She would be the one who tried to hit the other girl and who caused Gretchen’s computer to turn on and let Claire know that she’s been stalking her.
