Big Brother 13

Big Brother 12 concludes tonight, so now would be a good time to move forward apparently.

Having seen a 5% increase in viewers, 4% increase in adults 18-49, and 3% increase in adults 18-34 this season, CBS is already announcing plans to bring Big Brother back again next summer for season 13.

“Big Brother is our summer hero,” said Jennifer Bresnan, executive vice president, alternative programming, CBS Entertainment. “Every year, our producers deliver innovative twists and turns, consistently evolving this proven franchise and engaging one of the most loyal and interactive fan bases on television and online.”

I just hope next year’s cast is better. And the twists less lame.

Big Brother 12 Winner

If the last two episodes of filler were not enough for you, tonight we have a full two hours of additional filler. Hayden and Lane will square off against each other for the title of the final HOH of the season, and then the winner will choose whether to take the other one to the end or go with Enzo.

Hayden and Lane have a final two deal, but they don’t trust each other. Enzo, meanwhile, is upset that he made the alliance and somebody else is going to win. Well, he could have tried harder at the competitions. That said, the houseguests are focusing on how Enzo only won one competition, so because of that he can’t win. Apparently, none of them have ever heard of Dr. Will. He didn’t win anything, nor did he want to, until such time as he needed to win.

Unlike Kathy, who was still whining a week later, Ragan is making an effort to forgive Matt. Britney reveals the alliance to the rest of the jury. Somehow, they are surprised. So Ragan is once again mad at Matt. Matt, meanwhile, tries to take credit for the alliance. He still believes he’s a Big Brother mastermind. Seems he missed the memo he isn’t.

Rachel argues the Brigade got lucky. Lucky the rest of the house consisted of idiots. Britney and Ragan argue the alliance was brilliant, and nobody else had any power. Britney says that Enzo’s social game may warrant the win. Rachel gives him credit as well, although she’s not happy about it. Hayden gets support for his ability to win competitions, and Kathy thinks he’s brilliant. Rachel believes Lane played the best game, but Ragan argues that just being a nice guy doesn’t cut it. The question of bold moves comes up. There really is no answer to this question. What, alliance on day two? That’s about it. Otherwise, it was pretty well just played safe, but that can be said about the house as a whole, all season long, with the predictable nominations week after week after week.

The final part of the final HOH competition consists of questions asked to the jury.

Rachel: My favorite moment in the house was falling in love with Brendon.
Both are correct.

Kathy: The most shocking moment in the house was when Rachel returned for the 24 hours.
Both are correct.

Matt: The fatal error I made in the house was throwing my last HOH competition.
Both are correct.

Brendon: The moment in the house that I’m afraid to have my friends and family see is when I went off on Britney and Ragan in the hammock.
Both are correct.

Ragan: The houseguest who I think needs a reality check the most is Brendon because he was willing to give his waitress a half a million dollar tip. (As if Ragan himself is not due for a reality check.)
Both are incorrect.

Britney: The funniest moment in the house this summer was Rachel and Ragan’s fight.
Both are incorrect.

Tied at 4 after 6 questions. Time for a tiebreaker. Is this really what the season comes down to? In part 1 of the final HOH competition, how many times did Big Brother slam them into the walls? Hayden guesses 91; Lane guesses 55. Neither is close. The correct answer is 250. Hayden wins HOH.

With that, Hayden has the power to choose who he wants to take with him to the final two. Enzo has been evicted from the Big Brother house. I would argue he was the bigger threat, having been the key to the alliance.

Britney wants to see anybody but Lane. Matt thinks Enzo just got evicted, though he doesn’t really care. They get their wishes.

They have come up with six questions to ask to the houseguests. Since he was not involved in this process, Enzo will be able to ask his own question after they’re done.

Lane’s first question is how they can vote for him seeing as he hasn’t won much. He doesn’t really have an answer that would be useful.

The first question for Hayden is which two non-Brigade members he would like to see in the final two. Brendon and Britney.

Would Lane have chosen Britney or a Brigade member, if he had to do so? He again doesn’t really answer, but Julie forces him to say a Brigade member.

Did Hayden play a better social game? He played similarly… but his competitions separated them. Smooth answer.

What was Lane’s most significant contribution to the Brigade? Making them laugh and watching after them.

Does Hayden regret anything he may have said behind somebody’s back? If so, what? What a stupid question. Hayden acknowledges that he’s said things, but he won’t get into specifics.

Enzo asks Lane whether he was really going to take him to the final two. Kinda sorta maybe. Either way, he didn’t think he could win.

Rachel votes based on social game. Not one to think on his own, Brendon follows suit. Kathy obviously votes for Hayden. Matt votes for the person most instrumental in his demise (other than himself). Ragan’s voting strategy is murky. Britney will obviously vote for Lane. Enzo gets in one last joke, saying he’s deciding between who needs a haircut and who needs a shave.

The first four evicted houseguests have seen the whole show, and now they’re ready to share their opinions before we can proceed with the results. Monet does not apologize for trashing Rachel, nor does she believe she was inaccurate. Not that it was a secret, but Hayden and Kristen had a showmance. Unsurprisingly, her boyfriend has dropped her after what happened on the show. Hayden invites her out for some pizza. Andrew was shocked by Enzo being the leader of the Brigade (so is Matt). He also has news that Matt’s wife is healthy, which the final three are hearing for the first time, but they take it a lot better than some of the others. Annie says that this game was all Enzo. Britney is happy to learn that Lane would have brought her to the finals. Brendon hopes to get Rachel away from Vegas, and Britney is disgusted.

One last order of business before we find out who wins. The saboteur twist fell on its face. Twice. Annie reveals that nobody in the house knew each other, in spite of the lifelong friends sabotage message. Now it’s time for the unveiling of the second one. Britney suspects Matt. Enzo goes with Kathy or Matt. Lane says Kathy, Matt, or Enzo. All wrong. Nobody suspected Ragan.

Finally, the results are in.

Votes
Rachel: Lane
Kathy: Hayden
Matt: Hayden
Brendon: Lane
Ragan: Hayden
Britney: Lane
Enzo: Hayden

By a vote of 4-3, Hayden Moss is the Big Brother 12 winner. Well deserved, although I think he had good reason to fear Enzo. Brendon and Rachel, with their one brain to share, nearly derailed him, though.

The winner of America’s vote for the $25,000 prize for favorite houseguest is Britney.

It may seem a little early to announce this, but Big Brother 13 has been confirmed for next summer.

Survivor: Nicaragua Episode 1

Survivor returns to Central America for season 21 in Nicaragua, and it’s on Wednesdays now, whatever’s up with that. The Survivor: Nicaragua cast consists of 20 contestants, including former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson.

Since the main twist of the season is young against old, we already know how the tribes break down.

La Flor (under 30): Alina, Brenda, Benry, Chase, Jud, Kelly B, Kelly S, NaOnka, Sash, Shannon
Espada (over 40): Dan, Holly, Jane, Jill, Jimmy J, Jimmy T, Marty, Tyrone, Wendy, Yve

That twist has not yet been revealed to the contestants, however. They all go on a trek to meet somewhere in the middle, and they are under the impression that those they are walking with are their tribemates. That’s not the case.

Kelly B is keeping her amputation a secret, or so she thinks. Jimmy Johnson isn’t going to keep his secret very long either.

We start off right away with a challenge. Hidden somewhere is a medallion of power. The person who returns with that medallion will claim it for their tribe, and it may give them a “huge advantage.” They discover it’s up a tree, and Brenda arrives there first to claim the medallion. Marty is happy that someone on his tribe just won. Problem for him: she’s on the other tribe. Now they are divided based on age.

Jimmy J wanted some young people to carry him. Conversely, Chase wanted the Super Bowl winning coach.

Probst gives Brenda and her tribe an option. Hold on to the unknown power, or trade it for flint and fishing gear. But wait. There’s more. What they don’t keep, the other tribe gets. Fire and fish is huge. This power better be damn good. La Flor opt to trade for the fire and fishing gear, giving away the medallion of power to Espada.

Holly wants to make an alliance with Wendy. Already.

The old people have one advantage. At least one of them is bound to wear glasses. With the glasses in hand, Jane is able to start a fire quickly, so now they have the fire and also the power.

Shannon has determined that Jud is a dumb blonde, and he has already nicknamed him Fabio.

Kelly B is still trying to hide that she’s an amputee, but she has decided that is a stupid idea, so she decides to go ahead and reveal. Shannon already has a fear of sympathy votes. It’s day 1, dude.

Jimmy J is already sickly. If they need an excuse to get rid of someone, this is certainly it. As the tribe’s most senior member and a celebrity of sorts, he already has a big enough target on his back.

Chase has a decision to make. Does he want to align with Brenda or Shannon? Whatever he plans to do, he tells Brenda he’s in with Shannon, information she plans to use to her advantage, one way or another.

The hidden immunity idol is back, and a clue is tied to the well. Whoever goes to get water first gets the clue and is granted the choice of whether or not to reveal this information. Alina and Kelly B decide to keep this to themselves. That said, they’re forced to work together now, which Alina does not like because she doesn’t want to go to the end with Kelly considering the sympathy vote risk.

La Flor approaches the immunity challenge with a chant and dance. A little weird. One person will pour water at the top of the tower, while five others use sections of gutter to direct that water into a barrel. When this is filled, a bag of puzzle pieces will drop, and the remaining four contestants will solve the puzzle. The medallion of power offers advantages at challenges. This week’s advantage is one bucket of water already in the barrel at the start, or about 20% of the way done. The catch is that, when used, the medallion changes hands, so not keeping it was probably the right move since the younger tribe will get it back eventually anyway. They choose not to use it this time. La Flor is the first to release the puzzle pieces, but Espada is not far behind. It’s a battle between each tribe’s women to get the puzzle solved first. La Flor wins immunity.

Jimmy T will be voting for the other Jimmy. He makes this obvious to Marty, rudely.

Jimmy J wants to get rid of the weakest player, either himself or Wendy. He tells this to Holly, Wendy’s ally. Wendy realizes she’s an outcast, and Holly won’t even talk to her.

Good luck getting anybody to make a decision. They dance around the topic without anybody willing to name a name.

At tribal council, Wendy says she finds it interesting that nobody has asked her age. Is this something she typically gets asked this quickly after meeting somebody? As a warning to the tribe, she says that her nickname is Chatterbox. After that, she proceeds to not shut up.

Although they indicated that it was a hard decision, everybody voted Wendy off the island.

America’s Got Talent Season 5 Winner

The final four performed in America’s Got Talent Season 5 Episode 31 but didn’t appear to do much to change the frontrunner. At the end of tonight, either Prince Poppycock, Michael Grimm, Jackie Evancho, or Fighting Gravity will be crowned the winner and be rewarded with a $1 million prize and a show in Vegas.

The other performances of the night may have left something to be desired (Prince Poppycock and Donna Summer? Lionel Richie taking center stage with Fighting Gravity in the background somewhere?), but Jackie Evancho singing alongside Sarah Brightman was amazing.

Nick tells us that every one of the finalists has come in first at least once in the audience votes.

Now that an hour and a half has passed, it’s time to announce the first result. The act finishing in fourth place is Prince Poppycock.

Next, the act finishing in third place is Fighting Gravity. Not what I expected, but Michael Grimm certainly brought his A game last night. Sharon expects front row seats to their act in Vegas.

And then there were two. Based on America’s vote, the America’s Got Talent season 5 winner is Michael Grimm. What? Who? How? I certainly give him credit for his excellent performance last night, but I can’t imagine how Jackie lost.

America’s Got Talent will be back again next year for season 6.

America’s Got Talent Season 5 Episode 31

The four finalists were revealed on America’s Got Talent Season 5 Episode 30: Michael Grimm, Prince Poppycock, Jackie Evancho, and somehow one non-singing act slipped through in Fighting Gravity. Tonight these acts will perform one last time for America’s votes. As underwhelmed as I am by a couple of these picks and just the general fact that this is not American Idol and more diversity would be nice in the finale, there’s no doubt that at least a couple of these acts belong here and will deliver showstopping performances yet again.

Prince Poppycock has a great voice underneath the theatrics. I think. Piers buzzes. Interesting to see that during the finals. He thinks he’s blown it. Lost its fun, and won’t stand out against the talented opera singing of Jackie Evancho. Howie questions whether America will still embrace his more serious performance than the fun one.

As hesitant as I was about Michael Grimm, his singing of When a Man Loves a Woman demonstrates why he’s here. Ozzy Osbourne has bet $100 that he’s going to win. That’s what Piers came to see, and unlike the previous contestant who blew it, he demonstrated he could represent America’s talent.

Jackie Evancho has been the person to beat ever since she first stepped on stage at the Youtube auditions, coming out of nowhere to turn the competition upside down. I prefer David Archuleta’s poppier version of Ave Maria to this, but Jackie delivers what we have come to expect from her, continuing to be the most mature singer in the competition, in spite of still having baby teeth. Howie imagines that’s what you’d hear right before death. Piers has never seen an act on this show or any of the others in the world with more potential.

Any other year I’d be calling this competition for Fighting Gravity, the act that screams Vegas. Jackie’s placed a tall order in front of them, though. Piers calls them brilliantly clever, and whatever happens, this will be in Vegas. However, they made one bad mistake toward the end, which puts them short of the perfection that Jackie showed. Howie says this is what makes this show so special, the variety, and it’s not just your typical singing competition.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of America’s Got Talent Season 5 Episode 32, where we will find out who the America’s Got Talent Season 5 winner is, which airs Wednesday at 8/7c on NBC.
