Pirate Master Winner

Pirate Master was the new show from Mark Burnett that I initially expected to be the replacement for Survivor when it finally gets retired. I have no doubt that was the plan… until the ratings came in. CBS quietly moved it to Mondays from the prime Thursday at 8 spot, then promptly cancelled the show. However, they did run the remaining episodes online for those who were still interested in watching it. If you haven’t seen the rest of the season and don’t want to be spoiled, you might want to Watch Pirate Master online on CBS’ website.

We’re down now to the final three, and I’d say it’s one of the better final threes I’ve seen in quite some time on any show. Jay Hatkow was the snake who controlled every boot from the beginning without ever actually being the leader, and despite the fact that everybody knew he was in control, nobody seemed to want to do anything about it because they all trusted him. He’s the kind of guy who normally comes in second or third due to bitterness/fear. Christa DeAngelo got into power at the right time and proved to be a great captain. While she made some very dangerous decisions, I have to give her credit for playing a respectable game and wanting to go up against the best competition available. Of the three, I’d give Ben Fagan the least praise, but he positioned himself very well in the two most powerful alliances. All three have been very strong throughout the season in the competitions. Even at this late stage of the game, it still hasn’t been explained exactly how the winner will be determined.

For the first time, the pirates are on their own. All three must compete against each other, and whoever wins the competition will be safe, with the other two in danger of being cut adrift. Throughout the final competition, Ben and Jay were neck and neck, and the two were well ahead of Christa. Being in the lead, both guys proceeded to sabotage Christa, cutting the rope bridge so she had to go a longer way. Ben managed to get to the treasure just seconds ahead of Jay. He splits his $50,000 treasure evenly with the other two. Definitely not the final two I was looking for, regardless of who else is in it, but I do give Ben credit for a good game. The decision of who goes to the end with Ben is up to the jury. Will they reward Jay for his dominance or be bitter and get revenge?

The entire cast returns for the jury. Christa says her strategy was to lay low in the beginning and find someone more aggressive to help her out, to which she adds that she’s doing this for her daughter. Jay is honest. No need to sugarcoat it or apologize. He acknowledges he was responsible for the eliminations of just about everyone. He says he’s a nice guy who just did bad things.

Nessa tells Jay he was too aggressive and cruel for no reason. She then turns toward Ben to criticize him, pointlessly, and Cameron reminds her Ben isn’t on trial. Cheryl has no respect for any of the three. Kendra, who was useless the entire time, makes a personal attack against Christa for being a stay-at-home mom. Joe Don claims to be indifferent with Jay but that Christa just followed Jay. Azymuth says Christa just floated by and that Jay just lied the whole time. Bunch of whiners. John is the first person to finally compliment someone. Wow, who’d have thunk it? The crazy guy is the one who’s the least bitter. He admires Jay’s skill and Christa’s heart.

Bitterness triumphs over gameplay. Hard. Jay is eliminated by a vote of 12-1. Is this officially the most bitter jury in history? Christa moves on to the finals with Ben. Cameron goes on to reveal a cryptic message about the adventure being far from over. Yeah, I still have no clue what’s going on, and the season’s about 40 minutes from being over.

Following their silly voting, half the ghosts proceed to believe they are on vacation and are more interested in getting a tan than helping sail the ship. Without knowledge of what’s going to happen, it doesn’t seem to make much sense. Ben makes amends with Louie, giving him the treasure he won ($12,000) in the expedition he threw.

In the final pirate’s court, the ghosts have to give their reasons why they should be picked for the final expedition. About half the jury gives positive Christa comments, an indication that perhaps their entire reasoning for voting wasn’t just because they’re sore losers (which they are), and the rest says they’ll try their hardest no matter what. Ben views this as a challenge and comes back with one of the best speeches ever. He lets them know they’ve lit a fire under him, offers up everything he’s won so far ($80,000) if his crew wins, and speaks of his record of having only lost two times (one of which he lost on purpose). Christa in turn offers up what she’s won ($70,000). They must pick three people each, to make the teams two men and two women each.

Ben picks: Cheryl, Azymuth, Nessa

Christa picks: John, Jay, Nessa

Nessa must decide which crew to join. Nessa said she would rather see Christa win. Ben offers $10,000, win or lose. Christa offers Nessa Jay’s share of the money, then follows it up by offering John’s share as well, plus $10,000, win or lose. Harsh, but she’s just nice enough to pull it off, as both men are okay with this decision. I don’t like the fact that Ben keeps going first because Christa just keeps stealing his great ideas. Nessa obviously goes with Christa’s offer. Ben’s got slim pickings, but his replacement pick is Jupiter, the best of the rest.

In the last expedition, it’s a pretty close race until they get to one of the puzzles. Then it looks like Christa’s team is going to be blown out. Lucky for her she picked Jay, though. He spies on the other team and figures out the clue without finishing the task. This would be frowned on in almost every reality show, but not this one. As a result, Christa catches up to Ben, but Ben figures out the clue first and proceeds to fly down the hill toward the final treasure chest, which has been on the ship with them the whole time. Christa catches up again, but I never got the sense she was going to pull out the win.

And the Pirate Master is… Ben. As much as I thought I’d be disappointed by Ben winning, I’ve been more impressed with him during the last half hour than I was the rest of the season. He had a positive message, upbeat attitude, and some of the most convincing and smart arguments I’ve heard from a reality contestant. Still, I can’t say I particularly care for the winner being chosen on the basis of one last challenge win, but given the quality of this jury, perhaps it’s better this way.

We obviously won’t be seeing this show again for a season 2, but I found this season to be enjoyable.

Big Brother 8 Episode 24

In Big Brother 8 episode 23, Jessica nominated her former ally Amber and wannabe ally Zach for eviction. A much less obvious outcome than last week.

We start off with Amber praying to stay in the game. Yeah, because that’s something new. Danielle wisely goes up to Zach and tries to make him feel better. These people need to embrace the outcast who is a potential vote, not make him more of an outcast. Next CBS continues to try to push Eric and Jessica together. Then it’s Jameka’s turn to pray (but a thankful prayer, rather than Amber’s angry prayers). Jess takes the opportunity to bond with Jameka over religion.

Zach attempts again to break up the relatives by talking about them being a threat with Jessica (he will later pitch this to Eric as well). Since they most likely have America’s backing, it’s going to get harder and harder to get rid of even one of them, so it is a logical plan even when you don’t consider the family bond, however weak it may appear.

Amber and Danielle bomb out on Power of 10. Danielle’s most upset that she couldn’t see Nick.

Then what CBS has been waiting for finally happens. Eric awkwardly works his way up to kissing Jessica. Her initial response is not all that surprising considering they’ve been in the house for two months: “It’s about time.”

It’s time for the veto.
Jessica picks Danielle at random.
Zach picks Eric (houseguest’s choice).
Amber picks Jameka at random.
Dick is the host.

The backyard is transformed into a swamp. A cat tells the houseguests an answer, and they must hunt for the riddle that describes that person/thing. The last person back is eliminated. Pretty similar to the one last year where Janelle “assaulted” James (and BB’s 5 dozen cameras “didn’t have a good angle”). Jessica is the first one eliminated. Jameka is next eliminated. Danielle is out next. Eric just barely beats Zach back. He then proceeds to inch out Amber, who for whatever reason appeared to be taking her time, and wins veto, giving Eric and Jessica all the power this week. Danielle is concerned about what will happen with the veto, and Dick comes to the conclusion that they have to get rid of Jessica.

America tells Eric to kiss Jessica, which is easy enough since he’d already done so on his own. He thought Dick would be a good choice just like I did, though.

Jessica doesn’t understand what benefit there is to keeping both Dick and Danielle. I don’t understand either. Eric, however, argues the point of keeping them. The only logic I can think of behind Eric’s choice is because he fears America will force him to vote to keep Danielle, which he set himself up for by pushing so hard for Dustin’s eviction. Either that or he’s trying to win over America so they do something in his favor, rather than whatever favors ED. Jessica says if Eric is thinking of what she wants, he’ll use the veto.

Eric decides to not use the power. Amber believes that means he’s evil and has no soul. Zach just says it’s a dumb move. This does make for an interesting scenario. As much as Amber doesn’t care for Eric, she hates Dick with a passion, so she’s more likely to ally with Eric. Zach, meanwhile, could have just been alienated back to the other side, a side which trusts him a lot more than they trust Amber. As for America’s vote, I’d anticipate it going toward Amber. As invisible as Zach is, Amber seems to provoke a stronger (negative) reaction. Who do you think will be going home?

Big Brother 8 Episode 23

When we left the hamsters in Big Brother 8 Episode 22, Jessica was crowned as the new HOH. With the exception of Zach, whoever she puts on the block, she’s breaking a bond with them, though even Zach has attempted to bond more with Jess than anyone else. Will she stick to her new alliance with Dick & Danielle, or will she gravitate back toward Jameka and Amber and not completely destroy that former alliance?

Tonight we start off with Big Brother whining about Jen eating again. Of course, there is no mention of Zach defending her choice. I may be in the minority, but I quite enjoyed it. She knew she was a goner and had been harassed all season. No need to follow some lame requirement that should not have been implemented in the first place (slop was lame for All Stars, and it’s lame now). We then relive everybody being stupid and forgetting she’s going to be in the jury house.

Eric fully knows he’s got no game with women but thinks he is the best choice of the remaining guys, which he’s probably right about. While walking out the door, Jen apparently told Amber to tell Jessica that Eric has a girlfriend named Cheryl and is a cheater. Eric plays it off as an on and off undefined thing.

Speaking of whining, Danielle continues to whine about/to her father. She doesn’t want him to be a parent, rude, or gross. Good luck with that. Eric and Jess think the fight is fake.

It’s time for a luxury competition for a Big Brother shopping spree. Jess decides to make it boys against girls. Everybody needs to strip to find the letters on their clothing to spell out words related to competitions. The girls panic. They will be covered in suds, but not completely. Amber manages to spell a word, which is probably the biggest surprise of the competition. Eric spells the word goat, which apparently has something to do with a competition he imagined. And that’s the kind of brainpower that was predominant on the male side. So obviously the girls won the shopping spree, where they had two minutes to grab as many clothes as they could.

Wow. This is. Wow. This segment on Amber’s delusion about being on America’s Next Top Model is leaving me speechless.

America tells Eric to get Amber nominated. Pretty easy task. His next task is to get him to kiss someone. Okay, now this is one time it would be hilarious for someone to vote for Dick, but it’s a pretty safe bet this one has to be Jessica, who he has already (finally after two months) kissed.

It’s time for nominations.
Eric-Safe
Danielle-Safe
Jameka-Safe
Dick-Safe

Zach and Amber have been nominated for eviction. Jessica would be comfortable with either of them leaving. Pretty safe week if one of them goes, as she retains both her relationship with Eric and Jameka and her word with Dick and Danielle. Will these nominations stick, or will she use veto to take out a real threat? Might be a bit too early to make a big move, but it’s not like there’s a lot of time left either. Granted, getting rid of Amber wouldn’t exactly hurt, and it would force Jameka to look to Jessica as her closest ally.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live blog of Big Brother 8 episode 24, which airs Tuesday at 9/8c on CBS.

Parent Steps Forward to Defend Kid Nation

Lately, Kid Nation has been the subject of controversy, and one parent told Access Hollywood she’s frustrated with the fact that people are only interested in stirring up the negative aspects.

Lori, a lawyer from New Jersey, whose daughter Sophia is on the show, had this to say, “I know I speak for most of the parents when I say we are just mystified by this uproar and I guess it’s because people like to read sensational headlines.”

“Every time they show them, they cut out anything that might put the show in a good light, and it was such an amazing experience for these kids,” she said. “We really are so mystified by it. My daughter has nothing but great things to say about it. They had the time of their lives. I’m perplexed.”

“My child was better supervised there for six weeks than she could have had (she) been living with her family for six weeks. We don’t have her surrounded by doctors, and safety experts, and therapists, and producers and counselors.”

Regarding the controversy over child labor laws, “It wasn’t putting the kids in a situation where they had to work,” Lori said. “My daughter told me that there were so many kids that would just lay around the entire time and never did anything at all. So, my understanding from talking to my daughter was that kids could do as little or as much as they wanted to do. Nothing was forced at all.”

And on the issue of child endangerment, “I’ve been reading stuff that’s been coming down the pipe, and it’s really been distressing to me and most of the parents that have been involved with this production,” she said. “I’m a former prosecutor of child abuse and to label this show child abuse and child neglect is insulting and denigrating to children who have been victims of child abuse.”

Celebrity Big Brother 2008 Cancelled

Following last year’s racist comments, which were tame compared to some of the things that come out of the mouths of US contestants, Celebrity Big Brother has been put on hiatus for next year, The BBC reports. However, Channel 4 did not rule out the show returning in 2009.

Channel 4’s head of programming Julian Bellamy said: “After the race row, it was constantly in the press and part of the national conversation at a time when traditionally it was off our screens – it feels like it has never been away this year.”

Bellamy denied that the race row was the cause of the cancellation but did acknowledge a “general issue of supply and demand,” which probably is largely caused by fear of being associated with the controversy.

Blake Lewis Signs With Arista

Last week, we reported that the winner of American Idol 6 Jordin Sparks got a record deal, and this week it’s runner up Blake Lewis’ turn. Blake has signed with Arista Records. Arista is run by Clive Davis, with its most known artist being Whitney Houston. Taylor Hicks, Jennifer Hudson, and Carrie Underwood are also on this label.

Billboard reports Blake’s record is “your favorite ’80s mix tape,” Lewis says, “very inspired by Michael Jackson, Prince, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, the Cure. It’s all over the map, really — very influenced by ’80s hip-hop, old school breaks, whatever.” It will be released later this year.

As for Jordin’s album, “It’d kind of Kelly Clarkson’s pop edge, a little bit,” she says, “and I recorded a ballad-y type song, like a power vocal song, and then I recorded just a really fun, fast one. I’m trying to mix everything together. I’m loving all the songs I’m recording, so hopefully that will come off the album when you listen to it and you’ll be able to feel the emotion.”
