American Idol Season 9 Episode 23

The top 12 performed in American Idol Season 9 Episode 22, making tonight the first full hour of filler of the season, as one person will be sent home.

Starting this week, the judges get one save whenever they unanimously choose to save someone. Last year, they used it on Matt Giraud, who was then sent home two weeks later.

Paige Miles is the first person to join the bottom three.

Lee DeWyze is safe. Siobhan Magnus is safe. Aaron Kelly is safe. Andrew Garcia and Tim Urban both get poor reviews from Kara, who would be comfortable seeing either of them go. Andrew can sit down. Tim joins the bottom three.

Didi Benami is safe. Crystal Bowersox is safe. Katie Stevens is safe. Michael Lynche is safe. Casey James and Lacey Brown will duke it out for the final spot in the bottom three. Lacey is the one in danger.

Simon says one of the three in the bottom three is worth saving. The first one sent back to safety is Tim.

That leaves Lacey and Paige in the bottom two. Randy’s not surprised to see them there. Paige is safe. Lacey Brown is out unless the judges save her. They won’t. Too early to use it.

American Idol Season 9 Episode 22

The eliminations of Katelyn Epperly, Todrick Hall, Alex Lambert, and Lilly Scott in American Idol Season 9 Episode 21 brought us down to the top 12. Tonight’s theme is The Rolling Stones.

Michael Lynche
Song: Miss You
Randy: Reminded me how great of a performer you’ve become.
Ellen: Way to start the night. Amazing.
Kara: Hot on stage.
Simon: Kind of corny performance, particularly the dancing. Sang it well. Tiny bit desperate.

Didi Benami
Song: Playing with Fire
Randy: On fire tonight.
Ellen: Got right back in the song after losing your way.
Kara: Attacked the song with intensity. Two steps in the right direction.
Simon: Beginning to show the kind of artist you want to be. Very solid performance.

Casey James
Song: It’s All Over Now
Randy: Back to the Casey I love.
Ellen: Fantastic.
Kara: No longer just trying to be a rock star. Best performance since we met.
Simon: Like an audition performance.

Lacey Brown
Song: Ruby Tuesday
Randy: Pleasantly surprised. Kinda held it together.
Ellen: Tiny bit sleepy.
Kara: 50/50. Could have put more into it.
Simon: Song way okay. Stop overthinking this.

Andrew Garcia
Song: Give Me Shelter
Randy: Pitchy everywhere.
Ellen: Your best performance yet.
Kara: Didn’t feel the connection. Oh, great, another of Kara’s connection talks.
Simon: Gave it 100%, but something didn’t quite connect.

Katie Stevens
Song: Wild Horses
Randy: Sang really well. Very strong performance.
Ellen: Sounded amazing once you got into it.
Kara: Never technically perfect, but where you were going was the right direction.
Simon: Only week where you’ve chosen a really strong song.

Tim Urban
Song: Under My Thumb
Randy: Didn’t get that. Very bizarre.
Ellen: Felt like being at a resort drinking a pina colada.
Kara: Applaud you for doing something so incredibly different.
Simon: Also applaud you for being different. But it didn’t work.

Siobhan Magnus
Song: Paint It Black
Randy: Bringing the drama to American Idol. That was hot.
Ellen: Rise above and stand out.
Kara: Best interpretation tonight.
Simon: Stand out performance of the night.

Lee DeWyze
Song: Beast of Burden
Randy: Very singer-songwriter kinda thing. Dope.
Ellen: Sounded great, but expected a tiny bit more from you.
Kara: Growing faster than anybody.
Simon: Held back by personality. Chose a very safe song. But you have an incredibly good voice.

Paige Miles
Song: Honky Tonk Woman
Randy: Did alright.
Ellen: Such great star quality and presence.
Kara: Really hit some big notes for someone who had those issues with your voice this week. Young Paige is back.
Simon: Great considering you have laryngitis. Song’s a little generic and old fashioned.

Aaron Kelly
Song: Angie
Randy: Definitely born to sing. Like a little Justin Timberlake.
Ellen: Beautiful stand out performance.
Kara: Very powerful. Really great.
Simon: Sang the song within the limits of your vocal. One of your strongest performances.

Crystal Bowersox
Song: You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Randy: Not your best performance, but I love you.
Ellen: Saw a little bit of personality tonight.
Kara: So comfortable. Easy to watch.
Simon: Song didn’t have what you needed. Beaten by Siobhan.

The Biggest Loser Season 9 Episode 9

Following black team’s loss in The Biggest Loser Season 9 Episode 8, the younger group stuck together and voted out Cheryl.

With Cheryl’s departure, Daris is now momless for the remainder of his stay on campus.

For the pop challenge, they will answer trivia questions based on a Biggest Loser book. Reward is a visit to a hotel in Westlake Village with a “world class meal” (that probably means a lot of calories) and spa treatments. As a punishment, the losing team will have to clean the kitchen… and the gym.

How much fiber does 1 cup of brown rice have compared to 1 cup of white rice?
3.5 times. Ashley is incorrect. Daris is correct to take the lead 1-0 for blue.

Which is a source of omega-3 fatty acids?
Salmon. Andrea answers blueberries incorrectly. Koli is correct to take the lead 2-0.

What fruit contains the highest amount of ellagic acid?
Strawberries. Lance incorrectly answers pomegrantes. Sam answers correctly to make it 2-1.

Which grain promotes blood pressure control?
The answer is none of the above (brown rice, whole wheat pasta, and flax seed). O’Neal answers flax seed incorrectly. Sherry is correct to tie them at 2-2. Oat fiber is unique in its effect in promoting blood pressure control.

How many calories does a 1 ounce serving of avocado have?
50 calories. Michael is correct. Blue team wins the challenge.

The guys head out to get a spa treatment, while the girls get stuck at home cleaning.

The following day, the blue team returns in their limo, and now the work begins. They realize they’ve missed some workout time.

Ashley says she’s getting frustrated. She’s more focused on her mom than herself.

Michael got a message from his mom that his grandmother’s health is not good, so he will be heading home for a while.

For the challenge, Curtis Stone, the guy from The Celebrity Apprentice, is there. They need to cook an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert, using only 12 ingredients. Once a team chooses an ingredient, it’s off the board. The food will need to be nutritious, and it will need to taste good. They will have 30 minutes to complete the challenge. The winning team gets a 5 pound advantage at the weigh-in, which could potentially be huge. With Michael at home, blue team will have to do without their best cook.

Black team chooses the shrimp, which quickly removes what the blue team had intended to make for their appetizer. In turn, blue team chooses tomatoes, thereby eliminating black team’s ability to make shrimp seviche. Black team picks salmon; blue team chooses pork loin. Then from there they just rush through a ton of random ingredients. Blue team is cooking salad, pork tenderloin, and raspberries with chocolate drizzle. Black team is cooking salmon, wild rice, and pear/goat cheese/strawberries (where else you gonna get that combo?). Curtis is giving Daris hints/warnings about pork. On the other team, Sherry said she was worried about the rice, and Curtis seems to think she had good reason. That takes the longest to cook out of all the rices.

Curtis likes the black team’s light appetizer. He’s also complimentary of the blue team’s appetizer, although they are wrong about their calories (135, not 25). With the high calories from the blue team, black team takes the 1-0 lead. Black team has left the skin on their salmon, where there may be a lot of fat. Their total calories for the entree is 557, a lot higher than the 250 they were aiming for. Curtis is having trouble swallowing the blue team’s pork, but he overall likes their dish and the 297 calories. It’s tied 1-1 and now down to dessert. Blue team’s dessert is 92 calories. As Curtis has shown us before, just because it has chocolate doesn’t have to mean it’s heavy. Black team’s dessert is only 60 calories, and they’ve won the challenge. Interesting considering black team’s massive entree puts their total meal at a higher calorie count.

Michael returns to campus with not good news. His grandmother’s not able to breathe on her own any more. But one of the last things she said to him was to kick some ass.

Heading into the weigh-in, black team has sizeable 5 pound advantage. That’s 0.42% before anyone gets on the scale.

Andrea: 238 pounds (-5, 2.06%)
Sam: 278 pounds (-8, 2.80%)
Ashley: 286 pounds (-7, 2.39%)
Sherry: 163 pounds (-3, 1.81%)
Stephanie: 208 pounds (-2, 0.95%)
Black Total: -25, -5, 2.50%

Lance: 282 pounds (-8, 2.76%)
Daris: 248 pounds (-10, 3.88%)
Koli: 297 pounds (-9, 2.94%) – second person to lose over 100 pounds
O’Neal: 302 pounds (-9, 2.89%)
Sunshine: 216 pounds (-9, 4.00%)
Michael: 397 pounds (-11, 2.70%)
Blue Total: -56, 3.11%

Despite the advantage essentially giving them an extra person, the black team is heading to the elimination room. With the highest percentage of weight loss on his team, Sam is safe. As the last remaining mom on campus, Sherry’s the clear target, although her daughter will obviously vote to keep her around. Stephanie begs to be kept around, despite her poor performance on the scale, or perhaps because of it.

Votes
Ashley: Andrea
Andrea: Sherry
Sam: Sherry
Sherry: Andrea
Stephanie: Sherry

With 3 votes, Sherry is not The Biggest Loser. From her starting weight of 218 pounds, Sherry is now down to 138. She doesn’t have enough to lose that she’s likely to win the at home prize, but she’s sure going to make a strong contender.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The Biggest Loser Season 9 Episode 10, which airs Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.

The Celebrity Apprentice 3 Episode 1

Hopefully none of the cast of 14 celebrities starring in The Celebrity Apprentice 3 are friends of Donald Trump, so as to avoid the ridiculous rigged predetermined insult to our intelligence outcome we saw last season from happening again.

The teams have been divided by gender.

Men: Bill Goldberg, Bret Michaels, Curtis Stone, Darryl Strawberry, Michael Johnson, Rod Blagojevich, Sinbad
Women: Carol Leifer, Cyndi Lauper, Holly Robinson Peete, Maria Kanellis, Selita Ebanks, Sharon Osbourne, Summer Sanders

Their first order of business is to pick a team name and a project manager. The twist is that the women will choose the PM for the men and vice versa.

The men choose Cyndi Lauper as the women’s project manager, hoping that she will rub the other women the wrong way, causing them to self destruct. Although Rod Blagojevich, who nobody on either team wants to be associated with, would seem a likely choice, the women instead opt for Bret Michaels. He’s not all there to begin with and is on one hour’s sleep from his concert the night before.

During the naming, Cyndi is already worrying the women. The references to history that nobody’s ever heard of get thrown out the window by a simple synonym search, which produces the name Tenacity.

For the men, Bret Michaels suggests RockSolid, and they run with it.

They will be running a diner. Well, I think that we can say this is up Curtis’ alley.

Cyndi picks her restaurant spot, and Bret defers to Daryl, who is comfortable accepting the other spot. No need to flip a coin.

Curtis suggests avoiding the mass traffic, instead opting for an exclusive club with high pricing.

Sharon insists that nobody cares about the food, and she hopes to overpower Cyndi’s leadership. Selita offers up her cooking experience as someone who came from a big family.

Carol and Summer do the fliers. Sharon decides to work with the paparazzi on purpose, having him take their photos for the marketing. Holly says she was not given a task, so she opts to put together the menu. Cyndi’s finding out that Holly is bossy. Carol has decided that her team are dumb bitches.

While the women focus on burgers and fries, Curtis is trying to locate some truffles so he can make risotto.

Ivanka thinks Cyndi’s doing fine, but focused on stuff that doesn’t really matter such as how heavy she looks in the marketing photos.

In talking with Ivanka, the women decide to set $100 price point for their burger as a higher price compared to their target $20 price. On the opposite end, the men are going no lower than $100, with a top price of $250 for the truffle risotto. They realize that Ivanka thinks their pricing is too high, but Bret’s ready to press ahead regardless.

Holly is lining up a lot of commitments, using her autism fundraising experience. Cyndi says she doesn’t know a lot of rich people, but she does know Rosie O’Donnell, the person who was in a public spat with Donald Trump for months.

Nothing is premade. They’re going to have to make their own food from scratch.

Sharon and Cindy make a call to the local radio station to see if they can spread their plans to the masses.

Both teams seem to have lines right when they first open. While the women get people who are willing to eat, the men have people start walking out when they see the prices.

Cyndi’s running around like a chicken with her head cut off. So this would be an opportune time for Don Jr. and his small talk I guess. From what he sees, there’s complete chaos, but they seem to be tapping their resources right.

Holly goes outside to drag Carol inside to work the counter. They don’t need any more people in there. They’ve already got more than they can handle.

Despite the slow start and their high price point, the men are starting to get a nice flow of traffic. At Curtis’ invitation, Al Roker makes a visit. They’ve all called a lot of people, who are spending $1000 and up.

Don Jr. sees a lot more organization from the men, but he suggests that Curtis has a real problem if they lose.

Not to be outdone, the women are also getting some big buyers. Donald Trump has an idea that has the potential to derail their efforts. Joan Rivers will go visit each restaurant, and whichever one she likes will get $10,000.

As the day goes on, Holly continues to tell Carol what to do. Having dragged her off the street, now she wants her back out there.

Curtis puts Joan’s burger up and makes a point of saying it’s hers. Rod is too busy trying to convince everybody he’s innocent. Finally, after 9 minutes, Bret grabs the burger and serves it to her. It’s cold by then. In addition to their service, she doesn’t like their pricing.

With about half an hour left to go, Bret is struggling with his diabetes. He can get by without sleep fine, but if his blood sugar goes wonky, he could well end up on the floor.

The women are so busy that they can’t make their way outside, leaving some big donors waiting in line when time expires.

Sharon declines to offer up a weak player when Trump asks. Cyndi agrees as well. If they lose, she’s gonna have to change that tune. Both of them also decline to offer who brought in the most money or who brought in the least money.

Bret says that, if anyone is the weak link, it was him. Rod apparently did not raise anything, but he has kind words for the rest of his team.

Joan liked the women best, which was made abundantly clear already. She blamed the governor for her cold food. He doesn’t recall making her wait.

The women raised $29,559, bringing them to a total of $39,559 with the Joan money. The men raised $57,905, almost double what the women raised.

As the winning project manager, Bret receives $100,000 for his charity, American Diabetes Association.

Cyndi says she had a friend she could have brought in. When she mentions the name, Trump responds that she’s disgusting.

The men made $46,000 in tips, compared to the $24,000 the women made.

Holly says that the money was left on the sidewalk. Perhaps because nobody was outside since she pulled Carol inside to work the counter.

Ivanka, who offered criticism of the men’s pricing initially, now says that whoever came up with the pricing for the women was too low. Cyndi accepts responsibility.

Maria has no comment who should be fired, although I’m not sure I’ve heard her comment on anything so far this whole episode. Holly, likewise, declines comment, except to say that Trump said it comes back to the project manager. Selita also doesn’t know. This is getting old and pointless.

After Trump starts swearing, Maria finally has an answer. They can do without Carol. Holly agrees either Carol or Cyndi. The men, who are watching this go down, say that the women are going to need Carol’s creativity going forward.

Carol’s response is that Holly didn’t get her hands dirty. Don Jr. responds that Holly was the number 1 money raiser for their team.

Sharon joins the anti-Carol parade. Cyndi thinks that getting rid of Carol would be a mistake. Summer says it would be between Cindy and Carol. Selita didn’t raise much money, although Ivanka suggests that it’s because of her food that they got Joan’s vote.

Cyndi has never fired anybody in her life and doesn’t want to put anybody at risk. With that in mind, Trump offers to just leave things as they are and pick someone from the group.

Siding with the majority, Trump fires Carol.

The Amazing Race 16 Episode 5

Jeff and Jordan were non-eliminated in The Amazing Race 16 Episode 4.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Louie & Michael
Second: Steve & Allie
Third: Joe & Heidi
Fourth: Jet & Cord
Fifth: Carol & Brandy
Sixth: Dan & Jordan
Seventh: Brent & Caite
Eighth: Jordan & Jeff

Teams will now drive their way to France.

The first destination is a baker with a clue contained inside bread. From there, the detour is a choice between in the trenches or under fire, to relive the WWI battles. In in the trenches, they must translate a message in morse code. In under fire, teams must go through a muddy booby trapped field.

Under fire: Louie & Michael, Steve & Allie, Joe & Heidi, Dan & Jordan, Carol & Brandy, Jet & Cord, Brent & Caite, Jordan & Jeff

This seemingly physical detour has the potential to point out teams who will struggle as the race goes on. Louie can’t stop coughing as he tries to regain his breath, while Joe’s knee seems to be getting worse. Brandy, meanwhile, is pissed off. She has no interest in doing anything physical on the race, doesn’t believe she has to prove herself, and did not intend to do this when she signed up. She’s angry and taking it out on her partner. Oh, somebody slap her already.

Brent has a compass on his watch. Not this again. The sign tells them where south is. Instead, they go the direction the watch tells them.

After the detour is the blind U-Turn, which means they can remain anonymous if they wish. The very first team opts to use it. Louie & Michael want to choose between Joe or Steve. What’s the point of yielding the second or third place team? They choose to yield Joe & Heidi.

So much for a blind U-Turn. There’s only two teams in front of them. Joe & Heidi assume Louie & Michael have forced them to turn back, although they’re not sure why. Now Joe & Heidi are sent back to complete the second detour.

Jordan & Jeff have one hope: that Joe & Heidi can’t figure out the morse code. Having started out in last place following their non-elimination and gotten lost along the way, before they can do a detour, Jordan & Jeff must first do a speed bump. The speed bump is to reinforce a section of the trench using branches. Jeff’s growing increasingly frustrated with Jordan, since he thinks he’d probably be better off with some random person off the street.

Ultimately, Jordan & Jeff end up passing Joe & Heidi. For all of Brandy’s whining about how they were doing the wrong detour, it seems there’s a reason why every single team chose to crawl through the field. Joe & Heidi end up unable to complete it. I’m quite shocked that U-Turning the third place team actually worked, although I’d still argue there were stronger teams to get rid of. Joe’s bum knee didn’t look like it had much left.

Following the U-Turn, they will march themselves into town to find the Church of Massiges. With the war behind them, teams must pedal themselves to victory, riding antique bicycles through a 4 mile course to the pit stop in a challenge inspired by the original Tour de France.

In Caite’s ill-fated following of Brent’s compass watch, they failed to get the clue telling them to march back the other way, leading to them being told they have to get their clue after the detour. They’ll have to return before Phil can check them in. So they have to ride back 4 miles, walk back to the clue, and ride back another 4 miles. An irritation no doubt, but it doesn’t cost them any position

First: Louie & Michael (win 55 inch HDTVs)
Second: Steve & Allie
Third: Jet & Cord
Fourth: Dan & Jordan
Fifth: Carol & Brandy
Sixth: Brent & Caite
Seventh: Jordan & Jeff
Eliminated: Joe & Heidi

Unable to make their way to the pit stop, Joe & Heidi have been eliminated.

American Idol Season 9 Episode 21

We follow the performances of the top 8 guys and top 8 girls with the voting results to eliminate four more people and determine the top 12.

Didi Benami is in the top 12. Siobhan Magnus is as well. Between Paige Miles and Katelyn Epperly, Simon picks Paige, although she’s been lacking since getting to the live stage. He is correct. Katelyn has been eliminated.

Casey James is safe. Tim Urban is also in the top 12. Randy says that Lee DeWyze definitely deserves a spot, and although Todrick Hall came back tonight, he’s been inconsistent. Lee survives. Todrick has been eliminated. Interesting that this comes on the heels of a good performance, rather than his two prior disasters.

Crystal Bowersox is in the top 12. Michael Lynche is also in the top 12. Lacey Brown is, too. Aaron Kelly joins them.

The final spot for the boys is between Alex Lambert and Andrew Garcia. Unsurprisingly, this spot goes to Andrew, but eventually he’s gonna have to do more than coast on Straight Up. Alex has been eliminated.

For the girls, it’s between Katie Stevens and Lilly Scott. Kara says it’s an odd duo. Lilly knows herself, while Katie may be struggling to find herself but sounds contemporary. The final seat in the top 12 belongs to Katie. Lilly has a good voice, but I’m just not sure most of the audience “gets” her.

Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains Episode 5

The hidden immunity idol turned into a game changer in Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains Episode 4. Trying to force a tie and throwing three votes toward Tom and two toward Colby, the majority of the tribe was outnumbered when JT flipped to help vote out Cirie.

When he gets back to camp, JT tries to convince his tribe that he did it for them and not for himself. He swears to Amanda that he just got rid of Cirie when he had the chance.

The villains try to keep a straight face while Coach teaches them some “dragon slayer chi.” Everybody except Russell, that is, as he’s looking for the hidden immunity idol instead. He’s not even pretending to hide this fact. Having searched for two days, Russell finally manages to find the idol.

For the challenge, three members of each tribe will battle for balls and toss them up to the others who will try to score baskets. The winning tribe will enjoy a feast of chocolate. Jeff offers up some free samples. While the women have difficulty controlling their hormones at this offer, the heroes say they don’t want any. Sandra, Courtney, and Parvati sit out for the villains. Colby sits out for the heroes. In the pit, Danielle, Tyson, and Russell go against Candice, James, and Tom. On the platform, Jerri, Coach, and Rob square off against JT, Amanda, and Rupert. It’s obvious that this will be a very physical battle. With that said, James goes down, and he’s out at least for this challenge. Amanda scores the first point to give the heroes the lead. They reverse positions with the people in the pit shooting and vice versa. Tyson scores on this exchange to tie at at 1-1, but not in time to prevent Rupert from man handling Jerri. They switch positions again. Jerri scores the final point to give the villains the win. James will be sticking around to have medical look at his leg.

Boston Rob says they’ve gotta vote for Russell, since that’s the only way to flush out that idol. Russell reveals to Parvati that he’s got the idol, which is a relief to her since everybody believes she’s an evil mastermind. His plan is to blindside Rob. He next approaches Coach to try to pull him into their alliance. In Coach’s typical overreaction, he bows down to King Russell.

Amanda’s crying about James, an indication that whatever she may say about past relationships should be taken with a grain of salt because she’s going to stick with them. JT and Rupert assume the worst. Tom is not entirely opposed to a James elimination. This may play in his favor. The end result is that James returns, braced up but walking on his own. However, they don’t know what’s wrong with him, and he’s moving very slowly. Candice is worried that he’s now just dead weight.

For the immunity challenge, one person will be the caller, while the others are blindfolded and paired up. The caller will direct the others to collect ten puzzle pieces scattered in the field. Then they’ll have to solve a puzzle. We know how this is going to go. Colby, Rupert, Jerri, and Boston Rob have done this challenge before. Tyson and Danielle sit out for the villains. Jerri and James are the callers. Not the ideal role for James to fill, but it’s the smartest thing to do at this point. Both tribes have returned with their first three pieces. Villains jump ahead with 5, which the heroes briefly tie. Villains go back up with 7. It’s eventually tied 8-8. Then 9. Both tribes have one piece left, right next to each other. Heroes are the first to get to it and start the puzzle first while the villains roam around for some time. Villains return to start off their puzzle late, hoping their past performance in puzzles will repeat again. Villains win immunity.

Heroes realize that they’re not gonna win at puzzles. Or shooting baskets. Or anything that’s not sumo wrestling.

Tom and Colby want to get rid of James. Rupert and James want to get rid of Tom. Candice tells Rupert this is a stupid idea. So maybe they should vote her out instead. JT agrees the logical move is to get rid of the injured guy. He tells both sides he’s with them. Not a way to gain any trust, but it is a way to live to see another day.

This leads to another heated exchange at tribal council about who is or is not causing the tribe to keep losing over and over again.

By a vote of 5-2, Tom has been voted off the island. As dumb a move as I’ve ever seen in this game.
