Mike has seen his father struggle with weight since he was a child and does not wish to follow in the same footsteps. He sees, firsthand, how uncontrolled weight can tax the body and cause many problems. Mike has acknowledged the facts that if he does not lose weight he will not be able to accomplish his dreams of becoming a doctor.

  1. Hi Mike,

My roommate and I have been watching you on the Biggest Loser and I just wanted to let you know that I really admire all of your strength and perseverance. Your dad seems like a really sweet man and we hope that it all works out for you guys in the end. We think you are so cute and a huge inspiration to anyone that has or is struggling with weight. We would be honored if you would respond back to us because we are your biggest fans! Thanks so much and good luck.

P.S. We think you are so hot!

  2. Hey Mike,I just wanted to say that even though I don’t really know you because the viewers only get to see what the producers of the show want us to see, I feel like I can see what kind of person you are. You remind me a lot of my own son, I can see how you are a sincere, genuine, honest, caring young man who has a tremendous amount of good character, integrity and heart. This is a testament to what kind of parent your father is, who also seems like a wonderful person. I just really felt compelled to write and let you know how you touch peoples hearts simply because of the kind of person you are. I know you are probably extremely busy, but it would great to hear back from you. I hope that all your dreams come true and they can because it really is up to you, don’t ever let anyone steal them away from you. Best of luck, Mike VanWinkle

  5. Hey, Mike. I just wanted to let you know how much of an inspiration you are! I too have been dealing with my weight for a long time, and I have tried everything from Atkins to Jenny Craig, and nothing works! It wasn’t until I heard your story and then something clicked; I am not the only 18 year old that deals with this! Your story has helped me ion so many ways. I try to watch the show every week, and every time I see you and your dad in the gym fighting for eachother, it just makes me want to go down on the treadmill and run 10 miles! I have lately been trying to work out, running and swimming, but because of my crazy schedule at Eastern Michigan University and my job, that’s the best I can do right now. I have also tried to eat a lot healthier, not nearly as much fast food, and lots of fruits, veggies, and water! (If you have any advice, push on towards my way!) So yeah all in all, I just wanted to pretty much say thanks for being our foot in the door. It takes a lot of guts to do what you are doing right now, and I really hope your story will help many in the future!! Hope school is going well! Isn’t it just the best beong on your own? Ha!

  9. Mike,I am so pround of you.Once again you have show everyone what kind of a unselfish and kind, thoughtful young man you are.Giving you years worth of groceries away to a family that really needs it is just awesome. You are such a positve example for all of us.I know that it must have been hard knowing that you had to carry both teams by losing more that 10pounds,but I believe that you will have lost enough so that no one will go home this week.I honestly believe that you are the best contestant that has ever been on the biggest loser. No one else except maybe your father has the positive and thoughful attitude that you have.I would love to hear from you .

  10. hey mike!

  11. Mike,
Just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you are to me personally. I’m almost 16 and have been dealing with my weight since I was little. Right now, I’m making serious lifestyle changes and am in the process of losing weight. Some people don’t get that when your younger especially, being judged by your peers can be an extremely hard thing to deal with. I know I do not know you personally, but feel that on some level, I know what kind of person you are. You’re a GOOD person. What you did for Aubrey was an amazing thing, and don’t EVER let people tell you otherwise. You are a genuine sweetheart and I admire you so much. I hope you get to read this, but either way I wish you , and your father as well, the best of luck in both the competition and throughout your lives.
    Aly

    P.S. You’re really cute πŸ˜‰

  12. Hey Mike,

You really are an inspiration. i have struggled with my weight almost all of my life too. Im trying to make myself healthier as well. I think its wonderful to watch you and your dad on the show and i hope you continue with your success. You always put everyone before yourself and deserve all the best. I may be 22 but i think you are a real inspiration for people who want to make a change in their lives. Besides you are extremely cute! Well, hope you have all the best.

    -Denise

  13. Mike, I have been so inspired by your journey on “The Biggest Loser”. I know I only see the “TV Mike” but I can tell you are a thoughtful and sincere man. In fact, your kindness and generosity would seem sanctimonious if you weren’t so obviously sincere. I have struggled with weight since I was a child myself, and have experienced widely varied highs and lows. I am also looking for the inner strength to remove this roadblock once and for all and get rid of the weight. Any words of support or inspiration would be appreciated, and will be reciprocated. Keep up the good work!

  14. Mike,i watched the show last night,I am so proud of you.I have never known a young man so dedicated and sincere as you are.I have said this before, you are such an inspiration to a lot of people.I would love to hear from you.I am also so proud of your father,I know that you are both excited about him making the 100lb mark,he has sure indured alot,in spite of all the pain and struggle your father has accomplished something that people half he age with better health has not done.I am still behind you 100percent and would love you to see you become the first youngest winner on the biggest loser, you definently deserve it.

  15. Mike,
I hope you win! You are such a role model on so many levels. Your weight loss is amazing. You look FABULOUS! The fact that you gave up groceries for a year to help out Aubrey is incredibly generous and incredibly selfless. Your love for your father is a sight to behold, and watching the two of you tonight–he didn’t want to beat you, you didn’t want to beat him–was something else. You deserve to win. You’re not only losing weight at an amazing pace, you are remaining true to yourself and showing what a man of character you are. You are a beacon for your generation! And you have so many rooting for you to win–you’ve got to be the best Biggest Loser contestant yet, and i’ve watched every season!

  16. Hey Mike! You and your dad have completely captured my heart this season. And you have proven to be more of a man at the age of 18, than most other guys in this world. From what I’ve seen on the show, you are a truly amazing and intelligent individual. Thank you for being who you are πŸ™‚
    -Brooke
p.s. feel free to contact me via my myspace. It’d be pretty neat to talk to you. Stay strong and keep movin along!

  17. Mike,
I used to be an Idol fanatic until one night I tuned in to Biggest Loser and fell in love with you and your dad. I immediately wanted you to succeed in everything. Your determination and drive in so inspirational. My fiance laughs at me every week because I can’t help but cry when they show a clip of you and your dad. Something about you reminds me of my brother. You both have the same hairstyle and mannerisms. I tune in each week to support you and I hope that you can be the “Biggest Loser” BUT if you aren’t the “Biggest Loser,” you will surely be my biggest WINNER. Great Luck!!!!! I’d love to hear back from you, feel free to email me

  18. Hi Mike,
You and your father have captured our hearts. My family roots for you both every week. You are the kind of person that I want my son to be like. He is 11 and is on a weight loss and exercise program. The whole family has joined in to support him. You are his inspiration. He can relate to you because of your age as well. I wish you nothing but luck with all you do and keep up the hard work. Coming from a big Italilan family and seeing how loving yet competitive you both are just really reminds us alot of our family and it is refreshing to see kindness for a change.

  19. Hi MIke, just wanted to tell you how happy i am for you. Your are doing wonderful. Keep up the good work. Your a doll!!

  20. Mike, once again I am just amazed at how dedicated you are I was really excited to see that you had lost another 11pounds on last night eodisode,I am so proud of you.I thank you for standing up for your.,father ,it was not his fault that he had gained the 3lbs.what ever you did to loose that 11pounds keep it up,stay focused and do not let others allow you to loose that,I know that it is getting down to the last few weeks, and alot of attudes are flying around and people that you thought you could trust you can anymore.I know that you can do it,you have my support and hang in there.I would love to hear from you.

  21. this is my first season watching the biggest loser. i absolutely love the show and i am a huge fan of mike’s. it breaks my heart when i see his brother on the show and how he is struggling with watching mike and ron become successful in their weight loss while he has no support at home! i hope that when mike and ron get home that they keep up the good work and help him get where he needs to be. i’m pulling for you mike, stay strong, keep up the good work, and be careful not to get too cocky and let things go to your head! remember who you are!

  22. Hey Mike,
My roommate steph and I watch BL every week and we’re so happy for you and all the other contestants. Good Look tonight, we’re pulling for you. Also good luck with college, it’s so much fun, and with everything else! Oh and I just wanna say you kinda look like James Lafferty from One Tree Hill, which is definitely a good thing.
    Jess

  23. Mike, I am very upset to see you and your dad both fall below the yellow line, you two have come such a long way.I just love the fact that you are both very unselfish people, you want what the best for each other. I have come to love both of you and would love someday love to met you both .I have been a fan of the both of you since the first episode,I love you dad but you had a special place with me from the start,so therfore i am voting for you,not only because you derserve if but also that is what you dad would love to see,and I respect his decision,so good luck at the finale.

  24. Hi Mike my name is Alek I am 14 and i weigh over 300 pounds your story has gave me a little push but I need more help

  25. hey mike!!! i really want to wish you well and i want you to win so badly! you have been my favorite since day 1.. i admire your strength and determination. and your super hot!!! good luck in college!

  26. I hope you win you really deserve it! Good luck in future! Email me please I think you are awesome

  27. After making sure my last comment was posted, I’ve decided to add another. I used to watch and think to myself “Is he cute?” And when you ripped through that paper, my question was answered. I’m so proud of you, and you are the inspiration to my mother who wants to be skinny again.

  28. Mike, all I have to say is you should have won!!!!! You look absolutely AMAZING and I’m sure you feel amazing. You and your family touched my heart. My family including myself have struggled with their weight their entire lives so I really felt the pain and hurt your family seemed to have gone through. You and your dad finishing that marathon brought me to tears because it was so touching. You truly are an inspiration and at eighteen that is truly something to be proud of. Best of luck to you and your family! xoxoxo

  29. I should start by saying, I am so incredibly proud of you. I have watched you mature from a boy, to an established, confident, selfless young man. You have no idea what seeing you work so hard to accomplish what you needed, and provide your dreams for yourself meant to me. I have dreams too, although they may not be the same ones, i feel like.. watching you, an 18 year old, PUSH his way to looking and feeling the way you do, and not only doing it for YOURSELF, but for your family and ALL OF AMERICA?! That is an incredible thing Mike. I’m not sure you even realize the impact you have on people. You have proven to me, and millions of people that you are mature well beyond your years, and i would count it a privilege to have the oppurtunity to sit and talk with you one day. Biggest Loser could never compete with this season. I thank you and your dad for giving me not only a reason to watch, but an inspiration when the show ends.
    -Christy
P.s. When you broke through the paper..my reaction was *jaw drops..sigh* “WOW.He’s handsome.”

  30. Hey Mike!

Congratulations on your amazing accomplishment! I am truly in awe of your sheer strength and resolution. Your commitment to your health and family is wonderful. I can’t wait for Max to benefit from your help, you can and will teach him how to succeed. This show and your success should always be a reminder of your strength and perseverance. This is further proof that you can reach all of your goals. You are simply one of the best people I can think of. I only wish that I had the opportunity to meet you and see what an amazing person you are for myself. Good luck at school!

    ~Elizabeth

P.S. I’d love to talk, my email is [email protected]. πŸ™‚

  31. Congrats Mike, to you and your Dad, you guys really did well. Proud of both of you. You are lucky to have a dad like Ron. Good luck in the future’
    Pat

  32. Hi. My name is Sabrena. You have given hope and inspiration to millions of people all across the world and I am proof of that fact. I live in Alaska (The Last Frontier). My mother has been trying to find a contact sight to send you and your father a letter but this is all I could find. I would like to be able to talk to you personally and let you know just how much you have impacted my family.
I have seen the Biggest Loser show before but I have never WATCHED the show, but this year I have watched every episode since the first time I heard your story and that of your father. I have no idea what you are going through but I do know how it feels to have every person in your family be over weight. My father weighs almost 300 pounds and thinks that it is ok. My mother at well over 200 pounds has been inspired by you and your father and has joined a gym. Thanks to her we now own almost every book the Biggest Loser has ever published. My brother and myself have joined the gym as well to support my mom but I want to help myself too. I have 65 pounds to lose before I will be at a healthy weight of 120 pounds. My entire life I have been the chubby kid and I am so tiered of it. After watching you turn your life around like this I found the encouragement and inspiration to finally do it. Thank you.
I really would like to talk to you personally so please e-mail me at [email protected]. Tell your father thank you and both of you keep up the GREAT work. I know together you can and will help Max, I am rooting for all of you. Please let me know how Max is doing on his journey to health.
I was sorry that you did not win and were not the Biggest Loser but in my book you are the Biggest Winner. Good luck in school. If you put as much hard work in everything else you do in life as you did this you will always be a winner.

  33. hey i just wanted to quickly give you my email and tell you that i think you are a really big inspiration. i am fifteen and i think it is amazing that you could be so strong only being a couple of years older than i am. i really want to talk to you so feel free to email me at [email protected]
and i am just going to throw this out there- and not in like a creepy way- but i think you are really cute

  34. I just wanted to let you know that I think that you were awesome on “Biggest Loser Couples”. I was rooting for you all of the way, and I am really sorry that you weren’t the “Biggest Loser”. However, you are a “winner” to me, and I am glad that you were able to come in second. You are an inspiration to all overweight people in that you were able to transform yourself from an overweight teenager into a very handsome young man in such a short time. Keep up the good good work, and the best of luck in the future.

  35. Hey Mike –
I never do stuff like this, but I just had to write and let you know how proud of you I am. Losing weight is hard for everyone, but for teens, social eating is such a huge thing! Remember that when you go off to college! You’ll want to hook up with the gym rats or basketball league or something, and leave the midnight pie-fests alone. πŸ™‚

Really, I know you’re not MY kid, but I just feel so proud and happy for you!
    All the best!
    Karen
