NBC Heroes episode 17 Recap: “Company Man”
February 25th, 2007 – Oh. My. God. Wow! I know I have said this a number of times in the past, and I can almost guarantee that I will say it again in the future, but that was by far the absolute best episode of the series to date. I knew episode 17 of NBC’s hit TV show Heroes was going to be good, but I had no idea it was going to be that good. Tonight’s episode offered insight into so many things, I’m still trying to figure out how everything connects. I really am overwhelmed at the sheer magnitude of information that was revealed in episode 17, it was fantastic.
From what I can tell, Heroes episode 17 was only aired on Canada and/or on Global TV, so anyone that isn’t in Canada and/or doesn’t have Global TV won’t get to see the amazing episode until the usual time, tomorrow night. Having that kind of a jump on everyone else is awesome, especially when the episode was so damn good.
Hiro and Hiro’s father make an appearance and are tied into the HRG and Claire storyline; Claude shows up and we find out what role he played in HRG’s past; Matt changes his mind and his alliance; Ted runs into troubles; Claire reveals all and so, so much more happens in episode 17 of NBC Heroes.
Find out what happened in Heroes episode 17 “Company Man”, after the jump!
Tonight’s episode kicked off right where we left off at the end of Heroes episode 16 “Unexpected”, inside the Bennet house, only we get a look into how things developed, what happened before HRG, Claire, Mom and Brother got home from the hospital. Matt and Ted broke into the Bennet house by using Ted’s powers to superheat the doorknob. Once inside they started to rummage for information and were going to steal HRG’s computer, only things changed when HRG and family came home.
As we saw at the end of episode 16, Ted and Matt had caught HRG and family when they walked in the door and had them cornered. Ted and Matt tried to get information out of HRG, but he wouldn’t budge, and played dumb.
FLASHBACK: HRG is in an office at Primatech Papers, talking to his new boss, discussing how the Primatech paper salesmen role is all a cover for his real job – which is never actually revealed. HRG’s new boss also introduces him to his new partner, “one of them” as calls him, and as HRG turns towards to door to look for his new partner, Claude appears sitting on the bosses desk. Claude was HRG’s partner!
Back in the Bennet house, Matt and Ted still have the family cornered and are telling the family what they think HRG does, how they think he is responsible for them being how they are. In the process, Matt reads Claire’s thoughts and learns that, although the Haitian has erased mom and her brother Lyle’s memory, he hasn’t erased Claire’s memory. Claire starts to give away, through her thoughts, that she knows what HRG has been doing and, naturally, he denies it all and sticks to playing dumb. Ted, being the unstable nuclear kind of guy that he is, doesn’t take to kindly to being screwed with and starts to get pissed, as he glows orange. Luckily Matt is able to talk him down before he goes crazy.
Matt pulls Claire into another room to read her thoughts and sees that she’s thinking of playing the hero and trying to stop Ted. Matt tells her not to, for the safety of the entire family, as Ted is extremely dangerous. Claire then figures out that Matt is reading her thoughts and thinks about how Peter could do the same thing. Matt reads her mind and hears her thoughts about Peter and Claire’s starts to talk to him through her thoughts, about how she has the power to heal.
FLASHBACK: 14-Years ago, HRG and Claude met up with Hiro’s father on the top of the Devaux Building (the building where Peter found Claude taking care of the pigeons and where HRG shot Claude with a tazer gun in episode 16). Hiro was sitting at a table playing games while HRG talked to Hiro’s father about a fire and how the baby (Claire) survived the fire. Hiro’s father turns to HRG and gives him Claire to look after until her powers, should she have any, begin to develop, at which time he would have to give her back to the “company”. No wonder HRG has been trying to protect Claire and keep her abilities secret, he doesn’t want to have to give her up to the company!
Back in the Bennet house, Ted is questioning HRG, trying to get information out of him, when Matt reads his thoughts and tells Ted that he said something about a safe being hidden in the bookcase. As Matt and Ted go to check the bookcase, HRG jumps for the fireplace mantle and pulls a gun out from under it. Ted and HRG scuffle and Ted ends up with control of the gun, which he quickly points at HRG’s wife’s head. Ted threatens to kill his wife, since he was responsible for the death of his wife, and it’d only be fair. Both Claire and HGR use their thoughts to tell Matt to shoot Claire instead. Matt turns and shoots Claire, “killing” her and preventing Ted from shooting Claire’s mom. Claire’s mom freaks out and runs over to hold Claire’s “dead” body.
HRG uses his thoughts to tell Matt they need to take Claire into another room so she will heal somewhere where Ted won’t see here. Matt tells Ted they should move the body so no one has to look at it anymore, so Matt and HRG take Claire’s body up to her bedroom, laying her on her bed where she quickly heals up and is as good as new. HRG tells Matt and Claire that they’ve got their facts wrong, that he never created the Heroes and that he’ll explain everything later. Claire says she wants to go to the police and HRG tells her she can’t go to the police because the people he works for don’t know about her abilities yet, and if they did, they’d take her away. HRG and Matt chat and Matt realizes how unstable Ted is and agrees to team up with HRG instead!
Matt and HRG come back downstairs where Matt tells Ted that HRG has agreed to give up any information they want, they just have to go to Primatech to pick it up. Matt says that Ted should go with HRG to get the information while he stays with the family, but Ted shuts down that idea and tells Matt to go with HRG as he’s got more control when he has the family to play with.
FLASHBACK: HRG calls his boss up and lets him know that his wife found a gun in his bag since he was to careless to hide it properly, and now his wife thinks he’s some kind of psycho killer. The boss tells HRG not to worry, as they just found a kid in Haiti that has the ability to erase her memory and he’ll send him over to deal with his wife. Sure enough, a young version of the Haitian comes to HRGs house later that night and erases his wife’s memory. That means he’s been erasing her memory for over 10 years, at this point. No wonder she’s got memory loss problems!
Matt and HRG arrive at Primatech and go looking for tranquilizers to use on Ted. HRG talks to Matt about teaming up to work together and Matt agrees.
Back at the Bennet house, Ted is sitting in front of the family, practicing his powers in front of HRGs wife and Lyle, trying to scare with them and toy with them.
Matt and HRG meet up with the Haitian at Primatech, where HRG throws the Haitian up against the wall and yells at him for never telling him that he could talk and for not erasing Claire’s memory like he was supposed to. HRG asks him who he’s told about Claire’s powers and he says no one.
FLASHBACK: HRG and Claude are driving down a highway on a mission. Claude asks HRG about the mission and he tells him that all he knows is that there has been a security breach. Claude knows HRG is holding back and presses him to find out more. HRG tells Claude that he is the security breach, that they know he has been hiding another hero and that the boss wants him killed. Claude tells HRG that he knows all about the plans to kill him, since he was sitting on the desk when HRG’s boss instructed him to kill Claude. HRG stops the car on a bridge and they both get out. HRG asks Claude to tell him who he is hiding, or he will have to kill him. Claude refuses to say who he’s hiding and HRG unloads a few shots into him before he turns invisible and falls over the bridge railing. No wonder Claude was so pissed at Peter for leading HRG right to him in Heroes episode 16. They don’t exactly have the greatest relationship.
Back at the Bennet house, Ted is getting anxious and decides to head upstairs to check on Claire’s body. While Ted is upstairs, Claire sneaks in through the kitchen door and unties Lyle and her mom. Everyone heads for the door as Ted finds that Claire’s body is no longer upstairs and runs back downstairs, catching Claire before she escapes. Lyle takes off, up Claire’s mom shuts the door and sticks around. Ted holds Claire by the throat as his hand super heats, burning her throat. Ted lets her go and Claire’s mom watches as her throat heals. Ted tapes Claire and her mom back up and Claire tells her mom that her memory problems are HRG’s fault. Claire’s mom tells her not to worry, she has faith that HRG will be back to save them.
Matt and HRG return from Primatech and Ted finally figures out that the two are working together; however, Matt convinces him to find out the truth, rather than taking his revenge. HRG gives Ted his Primatech file as the Haitian comes in through the back door and frees Claire and her mom. HRG tells Ted that they found out about him 3-months ago and at that time his powers were very limited, though there is no way to cure him of his powers. Meanwhile HRGs boss sneaks in the back door and shoots ted! Ted loses control of his powers and flops around all over the place, setting everything he touches on fire. Matt and HRGs boss run outside to escape, while HRG stays inside and preps the tranquilizer. Claire runs back into the house to help HRG, and Matt follows close behind her. HRG tells Claire that he can’t get close enough to give Ted the tranquilizer. Claire takes the tranquilizer and says that she’ll do it and tells Matt to take HRG outside. As everyone stands outside watching, the doors to the front of the house blow off and the fire stops. Claire emerges from the blown out doors, burnt to a crisp from head to toe, healing herself as she walks to her family. HRG wraps her in a jacket as she heals and the entire Bennet family stop in the middle of the front yard for a much needed family hug.
Back at Primatech HRG chats with his boss, who tells him that the Haitian will have to be killed as soon as they can find him. They have Ted restrained and sedated in a cell like the one Sylar was kept in and Matt is also being held somewhere in Primatech in a hospital bed where a nurse with unnamed powers is looking after him. Just before parting ways, HRGs bosses asks him when they can expect Claire, now that they know her powers have matured, they want her back.
FLASHBACK: 3-Years ago, in the Bennet house, Claire and HRG are sitting in the kitchen as HRG is trying on new glasses, asking Claire which pair to pick. Claire asks HRG when she’ll have to get glasses since he has them and others in the family do, she’ll have to need them at some point. HRG then tells Claire that he’s not her biological father, that she’s adopted!
HRG and Claire are driving down the same highway he and Claude drove down years ago. HRG stops at the same bridge he stopped at with Claude and he, Claire and the Haitian emerge from the car. Claire and the Haitian stand to one side as the Haitian draws his gun and shoots HRG! HRG falls back on the bridge railing and the Haitian walks up to him and erases his memory! It was all a ploy to make it look like the Haitian and Claire escaped, and the Haitian erased HRGs memory so he wouldn’t remember coming up with the escape plan!
So ends the Heroes episode 17 recap! Tonight’s episode was fantastic, but it made me very sad at the same time. Just as HRG was starting to become a personable character that I really liked, they shot him and erased his memory. I really hope that doesn’t mean him, Claire or the Haitian are going to be phased out of the show now. They’re all great characters and it would suck to see them go!
