NBC Heroes Episode 16 Recap: “Unexpected”
February 19th, 2007 – Wow, what can I say, tonight’s episode of Heroes was fantastic. So much happened I’m actually still kind of overwhelmed from it all. The way the writers for this show can pack some much into the final five minutes of a show to completely hook you into watch next weeks episode really is amazing. If every show could do what the writers for Heroes do, there would be a hell of a lot more TV shows worth watching.
Tonight’s episodes kicked off like we saw in one of the many preview videos in the Heroes Episode 16 Preview post, as Hana, a new addition to the Heroes cast, pays Ted Sprague a wireless visit. Hana sneaks up on Ted in his shack in the middle of the Nevada desert, and communicates with him wireless through an instant messenger on his computer. Hana sends him the schematics for some kind of injection gun and, after a few messages, Ted swings around in his chair to see Hana face to face. Hana tells him that she knows where the two marks on his neck came from and the two settle in for a nice long chat.
Find out what happened in Heroes episode 16, after the jump!
Isaac and HRG/Mr. Bennet get together to have a chat and Isaac tells HRG that he knows Peter is responsible for the impending explosion (well duh!). HRG tells Isaac he knows that Peter is invisible and he knows how hes learning the invisibility powers and who from, but he thought he [Claude] was dead. Before leaving, HRG slaps a gun down on the table and tells Isaac that Peter may come for him first and to be prepared.
Over at Matt’s place we see Matt digging through a sock drawer – naturally the safest place in the world to stash a bag of diamonds. Matt pulls the small velvet bag of diamonds out of the super secure sock drawer and looks through the diamonds, sweeping all but one big one back into the bag and hiding it back in the drawer as his wife enters the room. But he missed one, and its not a diamond, its a big ass diamond ring. His wife takes it and Matt pawns it off as a new wedding ring, much to her delight and disbelief. But the lovey mood doesn’t last for long as his wife lets slip that Mohinder called looking for him for DNA testing, which naturally sours Matt’s mood a bit.
Speaking of Mohinder, he and Sylar seem to be getting along fairly well as they cruise into Montana to track down another hero, though that might have something to do with the fact that Mohinder still thinks he is Zane Taylor, not Sylar, the guy that killed his father. The dynamic duo come upon an auto shop and yet another one of the Heroes from the list, Dale. Dale tells Mohinder about her power to hear things from miles away and her story about how at first she couldn’t’t control it and it gave her raging headaches. Mohinder asks her if they can talk more and perform a few test and she agrees, but wants to deal with it all the next morning instead.
Back in Las Vegas Hiro is still trapped in the closet where Hope had left him, but not for long. Hope’s supposed boyfriend, who turns out to be a state gaming commission officer, pops the door open and greets Hiro with a gun to the face and list of demands.
Finally, we get another glimpse into Ted Spragues life! He heads into a cemetery and stops at his wifes grave to leave some flowers, telling her that he won’t be back again because she’s not going to like what he’s going to have to do. Hmmm, what could that mean?
Once again Claude and Peter are on the roof of the old Devauex building, but this time Claude is beating up on Peter, or at least trying to. Claude is still trying to train Peter to control and use his powers, and apparently beating him with a broom handle is a good way to do so, ’cause it works! Claude swings for Peters head and Peter uses telekinesis to stop the handle mid air, snapping it in half. Claude asks where he learned that power, and Peter tells him he got it from meeting Sylar in Texas.
Back in Isaac’s studio, Simone pays a visit and Isaac tries to feed hear a load of crap about Peter leaving NY, to bad Simone saw right through it all and knew he was lieing. Catching Isaac in another lie, Simone tries to give him back the keys to the studio, but he refuses. Simone tells him to find Peter and storms off.
Another quick glimpse into Hiro’s situation shows him stuck in a car with Hopes supposed boyfriend as they’re hauling ass down the freeway trying to find exactly where Hope and Ando ran off to. And things aren’t going much better for Ando, as he tries to help Hope with her bag once pulled over, only for the bag to pop open and spill out casino chips, which earns Ando a gun pointed in his face, compliments of his loving lady friend.
Back in Montana, Sylar and Mohinder check in to a motel for the night and Mohinder tells Sylar that he is working on an inhibitor to help Heroes to better control their powers. Sylar acts all offended, like he can’t understand why people would want to get rid of their powers and Mohinder tells him about his father being killed by Sylar while working on the same project. I cannot wait to see how this all comes to an end. You just know this relationship is going to go sour.
At the Bennet house, Claire is having a chat with her non-bio mom about her forgetting things and tells her that someone, not something, is responsible for her memory problems, and that someone has been brainwashing her. Naturally, Claire’s mom doesn’t buy any of it and says HRG is looking after them, which Claire didn’t respond very well to, saying maybe HRG shouldn’t be trusted. And without warning, Claire’s non-bio mom collapses into a heap on the kitchen floor. Still think HRG is looking after you?
Back on the roof of the Devauex building, Peter asks Claude why he is so interested in the pigeons and keeps looking after them. Claude tells Peter that Darwin used to care for pigeons when he was working on his theory of evolution. Good answer. While the pair are chatting, two shots ring out and Claude is hit with a tazer gun, while Peter uses his powers to stop the darts mid-air. HRG and trusty sidekick the Haitian appear out of the dark as Peter throws Claude off the roof and jumps off himself, only to appear seconds later, flying through the sky with Claude in his arms. Peter is finally controlling his powers! This is getting exciting!
Back in the Bennet house, Claire puts a quick end to HRG’s hunt and calls him to let him know that mom has collapsed, she didn’t remember her dog or her and she’s called the ambulance.
Things once again take a dump for Matt as his wife returns home in a tiff, wondering exactly how Matt got his hands on a ring worth $40k (sure didn’t take her long to get it appraised). Matt admits to stealing the ring and jewelry from Malsky, who he tried to protect from Jessica in Heroes episode 15. Matt promises to take everything into the cops and, just as his wife was forcing the phone on him to call the cops to let them know, it rings and he has to mysteriously take off right away. I wonder who it could have been.
Claude wakes up in Peters apartment and promptly punches him square in the face, yelling that he lead them [HRG and the Haitian] right to him! Claude flashes his two bars neck scar to Peter, tells him that HRG is the reason he has stayed invisible for all this time and, as quick as he appeared, he once again turns invisible and takes off out the door.
Simone meets up with Nathan in his office and asks him if hes seen Peter lately, naturally he hasn’t. Simone then tells Nathan to hold a press conference and to alert the media about Peter, his powers and what’s going to happen. Nathan flat out refuses as he wants to avoid the witch hunt that would surely ensue and tells Simone not to tell anyone, anything.
Checking back with Ando, he is still in a pretty crappy situation as Hope has a gun pointed at his head and he is frantically cleaning up the spilt casino chips, but never fear, Hiro is here… sorta. Hiro and the state gaming commission chum show up, hop out of the car and the gun fight starts. Hope uses Ando as a human shielf and he ends up taking one in the arm before Hiro can get to him and pull him into the cargo hold of a greyhound bus. While hiding under the bus, Hope finds them and points the gun at Hiro’s head, firing a single round… but Hiro manages to throw time in reverse, sending the bullet back into the gun as Hope gets tackled. Hiro’s getting his powers back again, he might finally start to get interesting again, yay!
Back in Montana, Dale’s already sealed fate is really sealed when Sylar pays her a late night visit in the auto shop. Dale asks him why she couldn’t hear him approaching and he tells her because he didn’t make any sound, and when she asks what that sound in his heart is, he says murder and, sure enough, that spells the end of yet another new Heroes character. *sigh* This Sylar and Mohinder team is really working out well for Sylar.
In the hospital, Claire sits next to her unconscious mom when the doctor enters. The doctor tells her that her mom has a sub dermal hemorrhage (bruising to the brain) and asks her if it is a result of spousal abuse. Ha! Claire tells the Doctor it has nothing to do with that, sorta, and explains the role of the Haitian. Naturally, the Doctor does buy it, gives Claire and funny look and walks off saying she’ll just talk to HRG when he gets there.
So that’s where Matt went! Matt meets up with Ted Sprague in the cemetery where he tells Matt he knows where the two marks on their necks came from, and as he is explaining things to him, Hana shows up. Hana tells Matt about the injection gun, how it’s used to inject tracking chips/isotopes and how HRG is behind the tagging and tracking. Ted and Hana tell Matt they need him to come with them and help them, they can do everything but get into HRG’s mind to get the information they need.
HRG shows up at the hospital and tells Claire that mom will be fine, to which Claire replies “no thanks to you!” HRG and Claire take to the hallway to have a chat and HRG denies everything about the Haitian and brain draining, that is until he finally realizes that the Haitian never actually erased Claire’s memory, and she knows everything. Its at that point he tries to apologize and pan everything off as trying to do the best for his family, which Claire doesn’t accept and storms off.
Back in Montana, Sylar and Mohinder pay Dale a visit the next morning, only for Mohinder to discover that shes been murder and had the top of her head cut off. *gasp* Sylar manages to swing a half assed job of looking surprised, but can’t pull it off very well since he’s all of a sudden suffering really bad headaches… I wonder why. Sucker! Mohinder wants to call 911, but Sylar manages to convince him not to, as they’d be the top to suspects, and the dynamic duo take off.
Hiro, having saved his ass, decides he’s put enough people at risk and grabs a bus ticket, telling Ando to take the car back to the rental agency and to go home. After everything that has happened, Hiro has realized that he has put to many people in danger and doesn’t want to risk Ando getting hurt, so he tells him to go home so he can continue on the journey alone. Hiro hops on a greyhound, where he is greeted by a friendly old bus drivers played by comic book legend Stan Lee!
Look out folks, things are starting to get really exciting here!
Claire, HRG, mom and Lyle return home from the hospital and, as Lyle is walking mom up the stairs, HRG and Claire begin to argue but are quickly broken up when Ted Sprague appears from the kitchen. HRG tells Lyle to take his mom and get out of the house right away, but it’s already to late, as Matt pops out from behind him, gun in hand, blocking off the exit!
Back in Isaac’s studio he’s in the zone painting again and this time paints a picture of a really pissed of looking Peter standing somewhere, which just happens to be behind him. Isaac snaps out of his trance, turns around and Peter goes after him, asking why he gave him up to HRG. Peter throws Isaac against the table and pulls down his shirt, revealing the two scars on his neck, confirmation! Peter and Isaac get into it and Peter yells at him, sending him flying across the room, into the wall. Isaac gets back up and, with his back turned to Peter, grabs his hidden gun and turns, only Peter is no where to be seen, he turned invisible! Peter runs around the room, knocking things over, yelling as Isaac as he spins in circles, trying to figure out where Peter might be, as he spots something out of the corner of his eye and fires. It was Simone coming in the door! Isaac shot Simone and, while Peter and Isaac sit around her, she dies! Isaac killed Simone! The bastard!
