Piers Morgan Quits America’s Got Talent

The last remaining original America’s Got Talent cast member is gone, as Piers Morgan has decided to leave America’s Got Talent so that he can focus on his work at CNN and the 2012 election coverage.

“I’ve been a judge since the show began six years ago, and I’ve loved every single second,” Morgan said. “I’ve discovered that juggling, to my surprise, really is a bit more difficult than I thought.”

As we’ve seen from the debacle that is now American Idol, judges can have a big impact on this show. Hopefully the producers can pick another judge like Piers, one who’s tough but fair. No fluff judges who are just there to be nice please.

The X Factor Season 1 Episode 14

The top 11 performed in The X Factor Season 1 Episode 13. Tonight 1 more act will go home.

Stacy Francis is safe. Astro is safe. Melanie Amaro is safe. Marcus Canty is safe. Leroy Bell is safe. Rachel Crow is safe. Josh Krajcik is the third of Nicole’s acts to be safe. Drew is the third of Simon’s acts to be safe. Chris Rene is safe.

Once again, the two acts in the bottom are Paula’s acts. Lakoda Rayne and Stereo Hogzz are in the bottom two. I think the public is sending the judges a message about the Stereo Hogzz, though I was not expecting Lakoda Rayne to be in the bottom.

LA votes against Stereo Hogzz. Nicole does, too. Paula refuses to vote. Lame. If Paula refuses to vote, majority rules, so with 2 votes, Stereo Hogzz will be sent home. After being told that, Paula votes against Lakoda Rayne. More lame. If you’re hired to be a judge, be a judge. Simon votes against Stereo Hogzz, who are going home.

The X Factor Season 1 Episode 13

The first results show of the season saw new and large group InTENsity have to pack their bags in The X Factor Season 1 Episode 12. Tonight the top 11 perform songs from the movies.

Stacy Francis
Song: Queen of the Night by Whitney Houston from The Bodyguard
LA: Much better than I thought. Why did you do the third most popular song from the movie?
Paula: Never really liked the song, but you delivered.
Simon: Liked you last week as a singer. Didn’t like the dancing.
Nicole: Shined from within. (Whatever that means.)

Marcus Canty
Song: I’m Going Down by Rose Royce from Car Wash
Nicole: Magic.
Paula: Everything about you resonates star.
Simon: 1000% better than last week.
LA: I have a crystal ball with an artist’s picture in it, and it’s you.

Drew
Song: Fix You by Coldplay from You, Me, and Dupree
LA: Really good again, but I don’t know the difference between the three performances. And who ever heard of that movie?
Nicole: You’re just a little slice of heaven.
Paula: Honest performance every week. Song sits within a beautiful vocal range.
Simon: This is the kind of record you would make.

Leroy Bell
Song: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2 from Runaway Bride
LA: Finally got it right.
Paula: Been waiting for this performance.
Simon: Your best performance by a mile.
Nicole: Aside from being 60 years old, you’re just great.

Lakoda Rayne
Song: I Wanna Love Somebody Like You by Keith Urban from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
LA: My favorite girl group in the competition. (Out of 1.)
Nicole: So natural, such good chemistry.
Simon: The group I always hoped and prayed you’d become.
Paula: So proud of you.

Astro
Song: Original Song with Lose Yourself from 8 Mile music and chorus
Nicole: You are a champion tonight.
Paula: That level of focus you have is what creates superstars.
Simon: Incredibly creative. Great role model.
LA: Could not be more proud.

Melanie Amaro
Song: Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson from This Is It
LA: Great singer. Not that inventive.
Nicole: Brilliant song choice. Made Michael proud.
Paula: Music heals the world, and your voice truly does that.
Simon: Bloody fantastic. Your best performance so far.

The Stereo Hogzz
Song: Ain’t No Other Man by Christina Aguilera from Get Smart
LA: Great job, but I didn’t know the song.
Nicole: Bananas. Favorite performance from you yet.
Simon: Not performing the record you would make. Need to be less cabaret.

Josh Krajcik
Song: With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles from Across the Universe
LA: One of my favorite voices, one of my favorite songs.
Paula: This is who you are. Amazing.
Simon: First half didn’t quite work; second half was great.
Nicole: Ready for a $5 million recording contract.

Chris Rene
Song: Original with music/lyrics from Gangsta’s/Pastime Paradise by Coolio/Stevie Wonder from Dangerous Minds
Paula: Glorious seeing you in your element.
Simon: Welcome back.
LA: Like a long way home, but we’re there now.

Rachel Crow
Song: I’d Rather Go Blind by Etta James from Cadillac Records
LA: You have your eye on the target. My favorite yet.
Paula: Best performance.
Simon: Like a mini Beyonce.

Survivor: South Pacific Episode 9

In a shocking turn of events in Survivor: South Pacific Episode 8, Ozzy’s brilliant plan to get thrown off the island on purpose ended up backfiring and led to Cochran betraying them and voting alongside the other tribe to get rid of Keith.

Ozzy’s somewhat calm about the fact that his plan blew up in his face. Jim, however, calls Cochran a coward and a poor excuse for a man. Whitney continues Jim’s whining ways and says he has a lot to learn and disgusts her. He has what to learn exactly? How to be loyal to a sinking ship that wanted to get rid of him last week?

Ozzy says that his strategy is gone. It was there in the first place?

The immunity challenge starts right off the bat. They will toss coconuts into a ring, then move on to the next round where they will crack coconuts, get the water in their mouths, and spit it into tubes located past the obstacles. Dawn scores in the first round. Whitney, Jim, and Sophie score in the next round, and those four advance to the final stage. Jim and Sophie take the lead. Dawn’s out of it, and Whitney is even more out of it. Jim wins immunity.

With Ozzy not having immunity, the plan is to get rid of him. How many chances do you get to vote him out? Apparently, two. That said, the stupidly vocal Jim would be a good target because he just keeps running his mouth without thinking. He’s safe, though, as long as he holds on to immunity, which he will do in spite of all his talk to the contrary.

With 6 votes, Ozzy has been voted off the island. Whitney and Dawn were at least smart enough to realize that voting against Cochran would accomplish nothing. It’s not over yet, though. He’s going to Redemption Island again. Oh c’mon. Really? This is stupid. If somebody plays this badly, enough chances are enough already.

Time for immunity challenge number two. They will stand on a beam while balancing a ball on a wooden bow. Anyone who thinks they don’t need immunity can feast on pastries and iced coffee instead. Jim, Dawn, and Whitney will compete in the challenge. Upolu and Cochran will eat. That’s certainly a first. Typically somebody bites on this offer but not quite that many. Jim is eliminated to some celebration. Dawn starts talking about how they’re all one tribe. Where was this attitude last week or before the last vote for that matter? Ultimately, I’m not sure how much it matters because Jim and Whitney have been vocal enough to secure their positions as the first to go. Whitney and Dawn survive to move on to the next section. Dawn falls, and Whitney wins immunity.

If Jim could shut the hell up once in a while, he wouldn’t have to worry. Anyway, his plan is to get rid of Edna. Nobody cares.

His potential saving grace is that Albert views Dawn as a bigger threat. She’s the person who could actually integrate into the other group and who nobody would view as a threat, thereby feeling more comfortable keeping her around longer. This sounds like just all talk to me, even if he has a point.

The Biggest Loser Season 12 Episode 8

After everybody split into new teams, Jessica was voted out in The Biggest Loser Season 12 Episode 7. This won’t end well, with her showmance still on campus.

Now we have to listen to Ramon complain (again). I hope this doesn’t go on for long. Vinny happily pokes him with a stick to stir the pot.

Each team will have one person represent them on the scale, and that person will be picked by their trainer.

Sunny says she’s getting tired, since they’re now in their eighth week.

Dolvett thinks Bonnie dodged a huge bullet. She’s not supposed to still be here.

Becky blames her father and his lack of acceptance of her for her weight gain, though she acknowledges he’s not the one who put the food in her mouth.

Today’s challenge is a cooking challenge that will be judged by last season’s winner Olivia and the author of The Biggest Loser cookbooks. The winning team’s recipe will be published in the new book, and they will also receive a 1 pound advantage, particularly important since only 1 weight will count for each team. They get 5 minutes to decide what they are cooking, and then they will have 30 minutes to cook, with the assistance of their trainers.

The red team cooks London Bridge, which I guess is supposed to be a clever play on words of some sort. Their dish is London broil. It’s rare. Rare enough that Olivia’s making faces. They also cook sweet potatoes and asparagus. The dish consists of 440 calories, 9 grams of fat, and very little sodium. 8% fat seems pretty light.

Blue team has cooked fajitas. Hardly sounds like a healthy dish, but they seem to have pulled it off. It is 300 calories and 11 grams of fat.

Black team makes pork and cole slaw. It looks like plenty of food on that plate, but it weighs in at only 210 calories. That low calorie account seems to be the thing that clinches the victory for them, as the black team wins the challenge. In addition to their prize, they get a lunch date with Olivia, who brings them gifts from home.

Dr. H is back with better news this time. But first, a lesson. Obese people want food more, but they get less pleasure from it, so they have to eat more to get the same pleasure as a lean person does. Now the good news: Ramon’s diabetes is gone.

After a particularly bad day of complaining when Jessica left, Ramon claims he’s over it, but he’s not.

At the weigh in, the trainers must make their picks. Bob chooses Becky for the black team, Anna picks Joe for the blue team, and Dolvett goes with John for the red team.

Bonnie: 213 pounds (-8, 3.62%)
John: 319 pounds (-10, 3.04%)
Red Total: 532 pounds (-18, 3.27%)

Dolvett didn’t make the right choice, but his second option was not bad either.

Antone: 348 pounds (-5, 1.42%)
Vinny: 345 pounds (-10, 2.82%)
Becky: 186 pounds (-6, -1, 3.65%)
Black Total: 878 pounds (-22, 2.44%)

Opting for the person with less to lose who could be safe with a smaller number, Bob made the right choice, though Vinny’s number would have been sufficient as well (with the 1 pound advantage).

Sunny: 216 pounds (-2, 0.92%)
Ramon: 280 pounds (-6, 2.10%)
Joe: 269 pounds (-2, 0.74%)

John dodges a bullet, as he would have been instantly eliminated had his team lost. Both as a group and with the twist, the blue team failed to put up the numbers. As the person with the highest percentage of weight loss on the losing team, Ramon is safe. Before we get to the vote, we get to listen to Ramon whine some more about how he doesn’t like his team. I get it, dude. Joe’s the obvious threat here.

Votes
Vinny: Joe
Bonnie: Joe
Antone: Joe

With 3 votes, Joe is not The Biggest Loser, surprised by the gameplay from his two friends. From his starting weight of 348 pounds, Joe is down to 230 pounds today. He’s even able to ride the rollercoaster (at Dollywood, which is apparently a real place) with his daughter.

The Amazing Race 19 Episode 7

Amani & Marcus were non-eliminated in The Amazing Race 19 Episode 6.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Andy & Tommy – 5:28AM
Second: Justin & Jennifer – 5:39AM
Third: Jeremy & Sandy – 5:40AM
Fourth: Laurence & Zac – 5:41AM
Fifth: Ernie & Cindy – 5:44AM
Sixth: Bill & Cathi – 5:47AM
Seventh: Amani & Marcus – 6:07AM

A crowded 2 hour bus ride will take them to the town of Salima. All teams are on the same bus. They are given 1 dollar for this leg of the race, which means they aren’t going to stray too far.

The road block requires them to use a bicycle taxi to deliver a passenger to their destination. Before they can begin the road block, Amani & Marcus must complete a speed bump of a slide puzzle of the new Malawian flag. Compared to the other speed bumps, it looks like this one may have a bit of challenge to it, particularly if the team is bad at puzzles. Still, it is just a slide puzzle.

Road block: Laurence, Cindy, Jennifer, Cathi, Sandy, Andy, Marcus

The main trick to this road block, aside from figuring out how to ride a bike, is finding out where they are going. They are learning that, in spite of the fact that English is one of Malawi’s official languages, people in this area don’t seem to speak much of it. Unlike some of the others, Andy is confident he can ride this bike with ease… until it breaks. With a bolt and a hammer, he’s able to knock it back together more or less. Laurence & Sandy work together and put themselves pretty close to the back of the pack. Jennifer finds her destination, but there’s a problem. She gave her clue to her brother and doesn’t know what she’s supposed to do next. Good thing all the clue says is to go back to the start, where her brother is, but it’s just a question of how long she’ll stand around trying to figure that out. Looks like it could be a while.

The detour (already?) is a choice between dugout or lugout. Dugout requires them to participate in a canoe race. In lugout, they will unload cargo from a ferry boat.

Dugout: Ernie & Cindy (used express pass), Andy & Tommy, Bill & Cathi, Laurence & Zac, Jeremy & Sandy, Jennifer & Justin
Lugout: Amani & Marcus

In spite of the fact that they are in second place, having just been passed by the snowboarders, Ernie & Cindy opt to use their express pass. Their logic is that they don’t want to be U-turned. Even if they are, with a double U-turn coming up, someone else should get it as well. Seems like a waste to me.

Ernie & Cindy choose not to U-turn. Andy & Tommy do the same. Bill & Cathi follow suit. Amani & Marcus, who have made up some time on the detour, also decline to use it. As they’re running toward the U-tour sign, Laurence & Zac see Amani & Marcus going the other way, but they U-turn them anyway. Feeling safe with Amani & Marcus having their names up on the board, Jeremy & Sandy decide not to U-turn anybody. It’s a rarity that the U-turn, let alone a double U-turn, ends up being completely irrelevant.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Sunbird Livingstonia Beach. Because Ernie & Cindy took so long to find the shop with their next clue and the snowboarders just followed them, the footrace to the end determines the first and second spots. It seems Ernie & Cindy expected the boys to just hand it to them.

First: Andy & Tommy (win $7,500 each)
Second: Ernie & Cindy
Third: Bill & Cathi
Fourth: Amani & Marcus
Fifth: Laurence & Zac
Sixth: Jeremy & Sandy
Eliminated: Justin & Jennifer

After the road block, they didn’t have much of a chance to catch up, and Justin & Jennifer have been eliminated.

The X Factor Season 1 Episode 12

The top 12 performed in The X Factor Season 1 Episode 11. In tonight’s first results show, one act will be sent home.

Ah yes. An evening full of nothing but filler. Like American Idol again. Half an hour in, they start introducing the contestants and their mentors. Then the host whose name isn’t even Ryan Seacrest starts announcing the results.

Marcus Canty is safe. Drew is safe. Leroy Bell is safe. Astro is safe. Lakoda Rayne is safe. Rachel Crow is safe. Chris Rene is the third boy to be safe. Josh Krajcik is safe. Melanie Amaro is the third girl to be safe. Stacy Francis is the third of the over 30s to be safe.

Other than Lakoda Rayne, Paula Abdul seems to have drawn the short straw. Two of her groups, Stereo Hogzz and InTENsity, are in danger of elimination, and the judges will choose one of them to survive and one to go home.

Aside from the fact that there are just too many of them with only a couple of stand outs, InTENsity is still more compelling to watch.

Simon votes to send home Stereo Hogzz based on tonight’s performance. Paula votes for InTENsity. Nicole votes for InTENsity. LA votes for InTENsity. With three votes against them, InTENsity is going home, and Stereo Hogzz is safe.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The X Factor Season 1 Episode 13, which airs Wednesday at 8/7c on Fox.

The X Factor Season 1 Episode 11

It’s been a couple weeks since The X Factor was in its regularly scheduled time, instead of Sunday, Tuesday, or whatever other random day they could think of, but now it’s back. I’ll stick it out for this season, but if Fox is not serious about the show, I don’t know how they expect anybody else to be. If the World Series is that much more important than The X Factor, put it on hiatus for two weeks rather than making people have to hunt for it. Still, the show was renewed today for season 2 following good (but disappointing) ratings.

During that time, the top 17 were chosen.

Top 4 Boys
Brian “Astro” Bradley
Chris Rene
Marcus Canty
Phillip Lomax

Top 5 Girls
Drew Ryniewicz
Melanie Amaro (returning after originally being eliminated)
Rachel Crow
Simone Battle
Tiah Tolliver

Top 4 Over 30s
Dexter Haygood
Josh Krajcik
Leroy Bell
Stacy Francis

Top 4 Groups
The Brewer Boys
InTENsity
Lakoda Rayne
The Stereo Hogzz

From them, the judges were able to pick 3 each to save. Simon eliminated Tiah Tolliver and Simone Battle, finally ending his love affair with Tiah that only he understood. LA eliminated Phillip Lomax, for some reason continuing on with the young rapper. Paula got rid of The Brewer Boys, keeping the two brand new groups intact. Nicole eliminated Dexter Haygood. That brings us down to the final 12, performing tonight for America’s vote.

The Stereo Hogzz
Song: Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson
LA: You have what it takes to be a star.
Nicole: You represented The X Factor so well. It’s hard to both sing and dance and make it look easy.
Simon: One of the best groups on one of these competitions. Not a band in the world as good as you right now.
Paula: Fantastic students.

Chris Rene
Song: Superstar by The carpenters
Nicole: You’ve grown so much.
Paula: This was your song, and you owned it.
Simon: Started off like you were in hell, but a big improvement over last week.
LA: I think we found the right material.

Leroy Bell
Song: I’m Already There by Rascal Flatts
LA: Love your voice. Didn’t get the song.
Paula: Never seen anyone work so hard.
Simon: Really good singer with a confidence issue. Don’t think Nicole has quite understood you.
Nicole: I’m sure you made your son, your family, and all the dads across America proud.

Rachel Crow
Song: You’re My Sunshine by Gamu Nhengu (Walking on Sunshine cover)
LA: One of the most charismatic people.
Nicole: Voice reminds me of Michael Jackson from Jackson 5. But I don’t know about the lyric change.
Paula: Would love your mentor to give you a song that shows more of your range.
Simon: This girl’s going to be around for a long, long time.

Lakoda Rayne
Song: Landslide by Dixie Chicks
LA: Felt the blend and the harmonies, but want you to pick pop or country.
Nicole: Sounded like one voice tonight. Put me in a trance.
Simon: Vocally, a massive improvement, but your mentor is insane.
Paula: I’m proud, and let’s go get frozen yogurt.

Josh Krajcik
Song: Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri
LA: Liked your before, but I really dig your after.
Paula: You just nail everything.
Simon: Incredible. Like you wrote the song.
Nicole: Feel your voice in my veins.

Melanie Amaro
Song: Desperado by Eagles
LA: The only thing Simon ever did right was bringing you back.
Nicole: No limit to what you and your voice can do.
Paula: Like fine china.
Simon: Didn’t realize how good you were. The one to beat.

Astro
Song: An original (and nothing but)
Nicole: You know how to get the party started right.
Paula: Jay Z’s got his eye on you.
Simon: Time for LA to take back his comment about how people that young can’t rap.
LA: Each week you get better.

InTENsity
Song: Kids in America by Kim Wilde/Party Rock by LMFAO
LA: Fun, fun, fun.
Nicole: Funtastic, funomenal.
Simon: Terrific. Shouldn’t like you, but I do.
Paula: Proud.

Drew (who seems to have lost her last name)
Song: Just a Dream by Nelly
LA: Spirit of a superstar.
Nicole: Amazing song choice. So relevant.
Paula: Live for the last note you sing.
Simon: Seeing a star emerge. I’m learning from you.

Marcus Canty
Song: Every Little Step by Bobby Brown
Nicole: Like watching a concert.
Paula: Total performer. Total package.
Simon: You have come alive.
LA: Just keep doing what you’re doing.

Stacy Francis
Song: Up to the Mountain by Patty Griffin
LA: Stir those souls.
Paula: Shining moment.
Simon: I think you want to give me a kiss.
Nicole: Honest, grace, poise, beauty.
