Vancouver Events: Body Worlds 3 Comes to Science World

Gunther von Hagens Body Worlds 3 is coming to Vancouver from September 15th, 2006 to January 14th, 2007.

Body Worlds will be setup at Science World in Vancouver’s False Creek and looks to be quite possibly one of the coolest things ever. Body Worlds features close to 200 real human specimens in all their anatomical wonder. These specimens aren’t your usual human specimens, but are actually plastinates, which is a groundbreaking technique created by Gunther von Hagens to preserve anatomical specimens perfectly. This method of preservation allows authentic specimens to be displayed in an incredibly lifelike fashion, offering a glimpse into the muscular and nervous systems that you have to see to believe.

The Body Worlds 3 exhibition not only features stunning pieces of human anatomy, but also includes animal specimens which are just as intricit and interesting.

Coast Mountain Bus Drivers at it Again

Yong_SA over at Metroblogging Vancouver made a post about a letter his wife sent to the Coast Mountain Bus Company today and after reading it I had to share it with everyone.

I’ve been a transit goer in the City of Vancouver and its suburbs for many years as I don’t have a vehicle, can’t afford one and don’t really want one. As such, I have seen my fair share of asshole, belligerent and flat out uncalled for rude bus drivers, but this story really pissed me off. Given, there are certainly some wicked bus drivers out their and a lot of the drivers for the Coast Mountain Bus Company are very helpful, friendly and generally cool people, but this guy certainly doesn’t fit that mold.

The driver of the #110 bus leaving Metrotown, heading East bound today at 3:34pm decided, for whatever reason, that he didn’t want to let a mother with a double stroller, two twin seven month old babies and a four year old child on to the bus because her double stroller was apparently to big, though she’s never had issue with it before.

Vancouver Blogging: Kickin’ It – Long Weekend Style

  • Corinna drops to the ground and nearly praises the lord jesus for… tide to go and purell? The Purell I can understand, being a clean freak transit rider, but the Tide to Go?
  • Yet another Free Vancouver Event that I’ve never heard of before is coming up. That’s right, it’s Davie Day in the West End on September 9th. Not sure what Davie Day is? Don’t worry, neither am I.
  • Stockwell Day, quite possibly the shadiest politician ever to grace beautiful BC, is Prime Minister Steven Harper‘s wing man… Look out Surrey, here we come!
  • Ranters of Vancouver unite! Having a crappy day? Want to throw that religious wack job on the bus, under the bus? Then there is just one thing you can do. Shout it! Shout it! Shout it out loud!
  • Remember Tiananmen Square. Certain world events cannot be forgotten, and this is one of them. Don’t forget!

Enjoy your long weekend folks! Here’s hoping that the sun holds out and Vancouver actually has a sunny labour day weekend for a change!

Taco Time Tackles The Little Guy

So, of all the stupid things, it looks like Taco Time of Canada has decided to go after a local mexican eatery called Casa de Amigos for using the supposedly copyright “Taco Tuesdays” slogan to promote their cheap taco deals. You’d think the fools at Taco Time would have better things to do, like maybe make their food edible and learn how to make tacos bigger then 2 inches long, but apparently not.

This looks like another case of a big company getting power hungry and bored, and deciding to go after a little guy trying to make a living cause they know they won’t be able to put up a fight.

The folks at Casa de Amigos have already had to pull anything referring to or mentioning the Taco Tuesdays slogan, and, as a result, have had to throw away around $5,000 in advertising, which is pretty rough for a smaller restaraunt.

What really gets me about this is something my wife brought to my attention last night. Being born and raised in Nebraska, where Mexicans and Mexican restaraunts are more common than Chinese food and Sushi in Vancouver, everyone and their brother that sells Tacos on a Tuesday uses the Taco Tuesdays slogan. Why is it just now that the big wigs at Taco Time have decided to go after anyone for using the slogan, must have been a boring day at corporate.

One things for sure, if Taco Time was trying to get some PR out of this, they sure are, but certainly not the kind of PR you WANT to get for your company. Although, getting this much PR for Casa de Amigos would have cost substantially more than the $5,000 they had to forfeit, so it’s not all bad for them. Next time you’ve got a hankering for some yummy Mexican food, think Casa de Amigos, not Taco Time.

Casa de Amigos is located at 8718 Granville St, in the Marpole area of South Vancouver.

Vancouver: Tamarind Closing It’s Doors

I received some rather sad news last night in the form of a press release. A fantastic India restaurant on W. Broadway and Pine know as Tamarind, is closing down. Myself and the wife ordered some delivery from there one night and it was the best Indian food I’ve had in Vancouver. The saddest part is, is that they have sold the restaurant to another person/company/whatever, who wanted control of it right away and who will be changing the entire theme. As such, Tamarind Bistro closes its doors this Sunday, August 27th. If you haven’t given it a shot, go and try it before they close their doors, it’s worth every penny and more!

Oh yeah, they even have an online order form and they deliver for free! Check out Tamarind Bistro. If you’d rather go sit down and enjoy the atmosphere while you enjoy your meal, here’s a map to Tamarind.

Read the sad, sad Press Release after the jump.

Vancouver Flugtag 2006: Results

Just got back from the Vancouver Flugtag 2006 in False Creek and I have to admit, it was pretty cool. We got there a bit late so we missed the first team and the Red Bull Skydivers but got to see everything else.

A total of 30 teams entered this years Flugtag with a wide variety of cool “flying” devices. Some teams actually designed their machines to attempt to fly, where as others (like Suicide Blonde), based their design on pure coolness. The Suicide Blonde actually tried to launch a giant hairdryer and, of course, went straight down as soon as they got over the edge.

Vancouver Flugtag 2006 Results:

Peoples Choice Award: Ballerz Club Ghetto Club

Third Place: Spadflyer
Second Place: Pirates of Flase Creek (my personal choice for winner)
First Place: The Big Shooter

It was a good time, a great show and the Red Bull Skydivers at the very end were amazing. The speed they dropped in to land was incredible, hard to believe they could control their landings so well at such a speed.

I hope they have one here again next year, cause I’ll certainly be going!

*Pictures to come later*

Cheap and/or Free Vancouver Events: August 19th

Vancouver FlugtagI’ve never been to one of these events myself as there haven’t been any held in Vancouver before, as far as I know, though I hope to get out to check this one this weekend. From my understanding it’s a bunch of different teams that build all manner of “flying” devices and attempt to launch them off a ramp in False Creek. There are lots of cool prizes for the teams that enter and the winner is graded based on distance traveled, creativity and showman ship. From everything I’ve read it looks like it’d be pretty cool. Bonus: It’s free!

Location: Concord Pacific Place (next to Science World on False Creek)
Date: August 19th, 2006
Time: Gates @ Noon, Event @ 2:00pm

Vancouver Zombie Walk – Never been to this either, but seen tons of pictures and it certainly looks interesting. Not entirely sure if there is a purpose to this event or not, other than hundreds of people dressed and acting like zombies lumbering from the Vancouver Art Gallery to god knows where. Bonus: It’s free and it comes with zombies, sweet!

Location: Vancouver Art Gallery (Howe and Robson)
Date: August 19th, 2006
Time: Zombies converge on the Art Gallery at 3:00pm

Opening of the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) – Ever year, apparently, on opening day of the PNE fair grounds, admission is free between 9am and Noon. Keep in mind, this is for the PNE only, and to my knowledge does not include access to the Playland rides. But who needs rides when you have a petting zoo? Bonus: It’s free and it comes with goats, baaaah!

Location: PNE Fairgrounds (Hastings @ Lillooet St – Burnaby)
Date: August 19th, 2006
Time: 9am – Noon (get there early as I’m sure line-up’s will be crazy)

I can’t think of anything else happening in or around Vancouver tomorrow that may be free. I anyone out there can think of anything, let me know and I’ll add it to the list.
