Survivor: Tocantins Schedule Change

Survivor: Tocantins will be preempted each of the next two weeks due to March Madness basketball.

For the week of March 19, no new episode will air.

For the week of March 26, Survivor will instead air on Wednesday March 25 at 8/7c. That episode is set to be a recap show, which typically sums up the start of the season and has some new footage mixed in.

Things will return to normal the following week with the Thursday April 2 episode.

Survivor: Tocantins Episode 5

Jalapao finally lost a challenge in Survivor: Tocantins Episode 4. They had their pick between Sydney and Sandy and chose to keep the relatively useless eye candy around, voting out Sandy.

Taj wrote Joe’s name at tribal council because she didn’t want to put Sandy’s name down.

With the clue making it obvious where they can find it, Taj and Stephen go to treemail to find their hidden immunity idol. Because nobody will suspect him of having it, she gives the idol to him. His opinion on this: the idol is now his.

The challenge will be played in rounds. Each tribe will have one member sitting on a spinning platform. Another tribe member will race, pulling a rope and causing that platform to spin. The tribe member who spins must make their way across a balance beam. Reward is a visit to the Charmin cafe for coffee and pastries. In the first round, Joe pulls Taj, while Brendan pulls Tyson. The race is close. Then it’s time for the dizzy people to try to recover. Tyson gets off to a lead, and he maintains that lead to take the lead for Timbira. Stephen is pulling Spencer; Coach is pulling Erinn. Spencer takes the lead and retains it to tie the teams at 1-1. Joe is spinning JT; Brendan is spinning Sierra. JT manages to cross first to give Jalapao the lead 2-1. Stephen pulls Sydney; Coach pulls Debra. Sydney crosses to win reward for Jalapao. Brendan will be going back to Exile, and he’s smiling about it. Rather than choosing Taj, he instead picks Stephen, who will not be allowed to participate in his tribe’s reward. Tyson is suspicious.

In addition to the food and use of a toilet, the winning team gets letters from home.

Tyson tells his tribe that Brendan is building relationships with the other side, which means he needs to go next. Don’t get why he switched it up and didn’t pick Taj. It would have been seen as just continuing the same as before. Granted, someone could interpret it as him trying to get close to her.

Stephen is wary of Brendan, but he thinks positively of him. He tells Brendan he can’t place his entire faith on their alliance plans.

Sydney’s talking to Spencer about her boyfriend and asks him whether there are any girls who he’s interested in. He’s apparently passing for straight. Refuse to tell for too long, and they may see you as a liar.

For the immunity challenge, two members of each tribe will alternate launching balls, while the remaining tribe members try to catch the balls. Catching a ball from either tribe is worth a point. First to 5 wins. Sydney and Stephen are launchers against Erinn and Debbie. JT catches the first ball to give Jalapao the lead. JT catches another ball to take the lead 2-0. Joe injured his knee on that last attempt. Brendan catches one to make it 2-1 Jalapao. Brendan makes a catch to tie it at 2. JT grabs another ball, losing his tooth in the process, giving his team a 3-2 lead. He just chucks the tooth aside, but this is a horrible place to be having dental issues. JT grabs his fourth, giving his team a 4-2 lead. Tyson makes a catch to make it 4-3 Jalapao. Tyson makes another catch to tie it at 4. Tyson scores again, and Timbira wins immunity.

Based on his performance at the challenge, JT wants Spencer to go. Taj is angry about her performance at the challenge, and for some reason she’s taking it out on her tribe. She calls them out for… well… it’s not clear what. She’s just lashing out. She seriously needs to go somewhere alone and cool down because this isn’t helping her any. Stephen knows Taj is in danger. He’s just not sure he wants to care.

Joe has not heard Taj say she does not have the immunity idol. She agrees to say it at tribal council.

Survivor: Tocantins Episode 4

Coach wanted to convince everybody to vote against Erinn in Survivor: Tocantins Episode 3, but unlike last week, he was unable to force his team to do as he wanted. Instead, Jerry, who had been suffering with stomach problems, was voted out.

Coach believes he’s the better leader than Brendan, which gives him more ammo still for wanting to get rid of Erinn. So like after listening to him go on and on for two minutes, are we done with this already?

Everybody is concerned about Taj because she keeps going to Exile. Little do they know what she’s been up to. Stephen is about to find out. She asks him if he wants to be part of the biggest upset in Survivor history. He’s completely open to the idea of joining her alliance with Brendan and Sierra. I like where this is headed.

Brendan, however, has not yet communicated to Sierra what their plans are as they walk to the challenge. This could undo everything. For the challenge, three members of each tribe will have a pole over their shoulders with weight added at set intervals. Reward is to raid the other camp and steal two items. Sierra will sit out for Timbira. Stephen and Spencer will sit out for Jalapao. Jalapao’s weight bearers are Joe, Taj, and JT; Timbira’s weight bearers are Brendan, Debra, and Tyson. The remaining team members will merely be deciding who to add weight to, and then adding it. Brendan and Joe get weight first. Each round is 20 pounds. JT and Tyson are next. Brendan and Taj are next. As time passes, Brendan gets to 180, JT 160, Tyson 120, Joe 140, and Taj and Debra at 80. Brendan and JT get the next weight. The record is 220 pounds, set by Rupert in Pearl Islands. Brendan and JT get the next weight. That puts Brendan at 220. He’s out. JT and Tyson are next. JT’s now at 220. Tyson is out at 140. JT holds strong for a while but is out. Joe drops at 140. That leaves just the women, both at 80 pounds. Both go up to 100. Debra is out. Jalapao wins reward. Sierra is going to Exile Island. She picks Taj to go with her. Now it’s just a question of whether Taj can work things out.

Joe and JT arrive to raid the camp. Unsurprisingly, they take some of the beans and a water can. They know better than to take both sets of beans (no need to completely anger the other side, and no need to screw over your own people in the event of a shuffle). Sandy doesn’t like this strategy. Sydney’s growing more and more tired of her. Sandy is, likewise, growing tired of Sydney because she’s attractive.

Taj gets the clue this time. She knows for sure it’s the treemail based on this clue. Trying to figure out where her head is at, she realizes Brendan never had the time to fill her in. So Taj will do it for him. Sierra’s up for it.

Erinn is an outcast. Before she came on the show, she went through a bad break up, so she doesn’t want to talk to anyone because it will come out. Oh geez. Go ahead and vote her off.

At the immunity challenge, one tribe member from each team will race out, untie and grab a puzzle piece, and return. When they have all 8 pieces, they will put them in the correct spot and rotate them to reveal the winning phrase. Taj is sitting out for Jalapao. Joe takes a lead over Coach. JT and Erinn are next. JT extends the lead. Spencer and Brendan are next. Brendan picks up a bit of ground. Stephen and Tyson go next. Jalapao’s still got the lead. Sandy and Sierra are next. Sandy retains the lead. Sydney and Debbie are next. Sydney struggles, and Timbira takes the lead by a good margin. Brendan and Joe are next. The final people to run are Tyson and JT. It’s pretty close, with Timbira having a slight lead. The puzzle will decide this. A lot of phrases are almost right, but only one is absolutely right. Timbira wins immunity.

This brings Jalapao’s 4 challenge winning streak to an end.

Joe is happy to be getting rid of someone in particular (Sandy). Sydney, however, fell apart in the challenge, which Taj brings up.

Sandy brings up at tribal council how Sydney is wearing JT’s boxer shorts. She defends herself saying she doesn’t have shorts and is wearing jeans. Jeans? On Survivor? She acknowledges, however, that she flirts with Joe the most, in addition to flirting everybody else, regardless of gender.

Survivor: Tocantins Episode 3

After she expressed her desire to get rid of Coach in Survivor: Tocantins Episode 2, Candace found herself on the wrong end of him changing his strategy of keeping the strong, and she was the first person eliminated from the Timbira tribe.

Erinn, having voted the opposite way of the rest of the tribe, tries to pretend she didn’t trust Candace at all. Just admit the truth. Everybody already knows it.

Jerry, who we saw for all of about 15 seconds so far, is having trouble with his stomach. He thinks it might be the beans.

Jalapao may have won fishing gear, but they don’t seem to know what to do with it. They do start catching something eventually, though.

Six members of each tribe will be blindfolded and tied together. The remaining tribe member will guide them through a maze to fill their containers with water and corn. Reward is comfort (tarp, umbrella, chairs, pillows, blankets, and a hammock). Joe guides Jalapao; Debra is the caller for Timbira. Timbira gets pretty well lost, while Debra squeals at them. Spencer and Stephen get some water for Jalapao. Taj and Sandy also get water for them. Then JT and Sydney bring back some more water. Timbira as a group finally gets water, and they’ve almost got enough. Stephen and Spencer raise their water flag. Jeff has told Timbira they only need a little more water, but apparently Debbie didn’t hear him because she says she doesn’t know what they should do, so they should just fill all their buckets with water and come back. It doesn’t matter, though, since Jalapao’s got all their corn and raises the second flag to win the challenge. Brendan goes to Exile, and as promised, he picks Taj to go with him again.

Coach begs everybody to not go off in groups and talk about who screwed up. So he goes off with Tyson to talk about Sierra and Erinn. Tyson thinks Coach wants his point to be known, whether he really knows anything or not. Tyson is now Coach’s assistant coach.

Taj and Brendan pick urns again, and this time she gets the clue. They know it’s at camp and surrounded by wood. Not a lot to go on, but it’s something. Just in case they don’t get sent back, they plot to each bring one person in. Brendan will go to Sierra, and Taj will go to Stephen. This is brilliant.

With their reward, Jalapao slept well. Sandy believes she’s a sex kitten this morning, which… scares me.

At the immunity challenge, two members of each tribe will roll a large crate back to the mat. When they gather all 6 crates, they must stack them to build a staircase spelling out their name. Jalapao and Taj go first against Brendan and Debra. Brendan and Debbie get off to a slight lead, but JT and Taj return first. Stephen and Sydney are next for Jalapao against Sierra and Tyson. Sierra and Tyson make up time and take the lead by a good margin. Erinn and Coach go against Joe and Sandy. Erinn and Coach retain the lead. Brendan and Jerry go against JT and Spencer. Brendan and Jerry retain the lead, but Jerry gets hit by the other team’s crate in the process. JT and Spencer go against Joe and Stephen. Timbira’s still in the lead. Tyson and Brendan go for their last crate against Spencer and Taj. Timbira’s got a good lead when it comes time to build the staircase. Jalapao does a good job of catching up on the stair building, and they come from behind to win immunity. It appears that Jerry’s stomach problems finished off his tribe, which is good news for the poorly performing Stephen and Sydney.

Coach doesn’t like the look on Erinn’s face, which makes him hate her more. Despite the fact that Jerry blew the challenge, his plan is still to get rid of Erinn. Way to keep the strong around. Sierra doesn’t want to be stupid and go along with this plan.

Brendan begins his hunt for the hidden idol. It’s inside the treemail post.

Erinn expresses her frustration because she knew the answer to the staircase puzzle, but nobody wanted to listen to her until it was too late. Jerry doesn’t believe the tribe communicates very well, and he wants somebody to be a leader. He suggests Brendan. Coach suggests himself. Erinn responds Brendan is better. He says this is just because of a personality clash, which she denies being aware of. He has great ideas but is unable to own them. Probst says Coach’s ego may be getting in the way.

Unlike last week when everybody blindly followed Coach’s poor plan, this time the tables have been turned, although Coach was among the unanimous vote against Jerry. Jerry’s elimination is not overly surprising since he went from invisible to a key character this episode.

Survivor Renewed for Seasons 19, 20

CBS announced today that Survivor, now in its 18th season, will be back for season 19 and 20 for the 2009-2010 season. Despite the all too often talked about ratings decline it has seen, Survivor continues to be one of the top 20 shows on TV every year.

“SURVIVOR is one of CBS’s signature series and a symbol of enduring quality and entertainment on prime time television,” said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. “Every season delivers a fresh new adventure for viewers and a time period-winning performance on the network. We’re excited to deliver audiences two more editions of outstanding production values, exotic scenery, new castaways and, of course, our Emmy Award-winning host.”

“I am happy to be able produce two more editions of survivor for our loyal fans,” said Mark Burnett, Executive Producer of SURVIVOR. “Our show stands for high quality family entertainment and all of us on this team will continue to deliver on this promise.”

“We have a unique relationship with our audience,” said Jeff Probst, host of SURVIVOR. “They tell us what they like and we listen. It’s worked for 18 editions and we’re looking forward to delivering two more satisfying seasons!”

Jeff Probst will continue to host the show at least through next year. Whether he will be back beyond that is anybody’s guess, including his own, as his answers on the subject have ranged from denying he would be back to just saying he doesn’t know. The quality of the show, which had a few very dry seasons before rebounding in China, seems to have convinced him that the show is still worthwhile, though.

Survivor: Tocantins Episode 2

Survivor: Tocantins Episode 1 immediately started with the tribes being told to turn two teammates into outcasts. Jalapao chose Sandy due to her age; Timbira chose Sierra because she was already sick. While Sierra worked to get back in the good graces of her tribe, Sandy didn’t make an effort and instead searched for a hidden idol that she apparently never found. Regardless, thanks to Carolina’s mouth and poor performance in the challenge, she was the first person voted out, sparing Sandy for the time being.

Jalapao’s already talking about how Sandy’s the next to go.

Since the other tribe got all the food, Jalapao is getting desperate already. Time to eat the termites. Sydney declines. She’ll eat one at a challenge, but not in real life, whatever that means.

Sierra still wants to find the hidden idol. Since they didn’t go to tribal council, she will still get an opportunity to use it. In need of some help, she goes to Brendan, who was the only one who didn’t vote against her the first day. They’re away so long that Debbie comes looking for them. They tell her they’re building a firepit. They don’t even have to lie to the others, as Debbie tells them that they’re going to have a beach fire. Now that this has happened, Sierra has given up on the idol.

Coach and Candace are clashing because they’re similar. They like to pick things apart and aren’t afraid to argue. She predicts his ego will be the death of him.

Taj tells her tribe she’s married to Eddie George. They seem to know who he is, so I’m going to take their word for it. He recently retired from the NFL, which is a dangerous thing to acknowledge since people who don’t need the money run the risk of getting booted.

The rain welcomes them to the challenge. Three members will go through the water to grab a ball, then work together until they can shoot the ball into a basket, while members of the other tribe will attempt to stop them any way they can. First to three wins immunity and fishing gear. Debbie sits out for Timbira. Taj, Stephen, and Sydney go against Sierra, Candace, and Tyson for the first round. It’s obvious this will be a very aggressive challenge with no holds barred. Candace intercepts the ball and scores for Timbira. Joe, JT, and Sandy are taking on Erinn, Brendan, and Tyson. Tyson scores for Timbira to take the lead 2-0. The next round is all women: Candace, Sierra, and Erinn against Taj, Sydney, and Sandy. Taj completely takes over initially but can’t make the shot, but Sydney recovers to keep Jalapao alive. The men are next up: JT, Joe, and Spencer against Brendan, Coach, and Jerry. Brendan tosses the ball away, and it’s recovered by JT. It’s tied at two. The last round is between Stephen, Sydney, and Taj against Sierra, Candace, and Tyson. Candace tackles Taj to get the ball for her team, but both Candace and Sierra miss their shots. Sydney recovers and misses. Stephen barely manages to escape the clutches of the recently sickly Sierra to score the point and win for Jalapao.

Additionally, Brendan will be going to Exile. But this year there’s a twist, which hopefully doesn’t suck. He can grab one member of the winning tribe to join him. Hmm… interesting. He will take Taj with him.

Stephen says JT has emerged as the tribe leader, and they’re surprised that two people so different are getting along as well as they do. They have luck seeing fish, if not catching them.

At Exile Island, each person must choose an urn. Brendan gets a clue. Taj gets nothing. Okay, now that part of it is lame. But the twist continues. The person who gets the clue can choose whether to go back to their own tribe or to go to the other tribe, which could be a potentially huge move (but hopefully the tribe they leave doesn’t later whine and whine and whine about it like Ozzy and his crew did during Cook Islands). Brendan’s not at all interested in going to the other tribe. Taj insists on helping him find the idol. He’s lucky he took her, or he wouldn’t have been able to figure out that the idol’s where they live (at least now she knows, too). She tells him she hasn’t bonded with anyone yet, but he believes they’re creating a good bond here. They agree to work together to get sent back and find the idols.

Coach, who one would assume is one of the better people to have in such a physical challenge, surprised Candace by his lackluster performance at the challenge. Probst brought this up during the challenge as well, so it’s not just her, but Coach wants to get rid of her instead of Sierra.

When he gets back, Brendan tells his tribe the story about how there are two urns… and he didn’t get the one with the clue.

As much as she hates Coach, Candace knows it’s too early to cut him.

Coach tells Sierra and Debbie that he’s going to vote for Candace and keep Sierra safe, so they need to vote with him.

Sierra gets trashed as expected at tribal council. Candace knows that sometimes she talks too much, the kiss of death last week. For some reason, Erinn seems to be trying to distance herself from the tribe, saying she doesn’t know that she can trust any of them.

Survivor: Tocantins Episode 1

Survivor is back for season 18, and the Survivor: Tocantins cast includes 16 new castaways competing for the $1 million prize. This year’s destination is Tocantins, a state in Brazil.

First impressions are already forming. Erinn says she loves Tyson. Tyson, meanwhile, thinks Erinn’s probably this season’s bitch. Stephen’s encouraged by the old lady Sandy, since it means he won’t be the first to go. And she thinks he’s like a geek. Sierra’s been sick. Already. She’s trying to hide it, but Ben (Coach) thinks she’s going to crumble.

The contestants have already been divided into tribes.

Jalapao (Red Tribe): Carolina, Joe, JT, Sandy, Spencer, Stephen, Sydney, Taj
Timbira (Black Tribe): Brendan, Candace, Coach, Debbie, Erinn, Jerry, Sierra, Tyson

The tribes will have 60 seconds to gather as much as they can from the truck, something they’ve hopefully been smart enough to think about on the ride there. Timbira got all the water and all the beans. The other tribe is apparently dumb. Probst gives them a map and a compass for the four hour trek through the 110 degree heat.

The first vote starts now. One person from each tribe is not going to make the journey. Hopefully this is not as lame as it could be.

Sierra admits during the vote she’s got strep throat.

The way he worded it, I was expecting it wouldn’t be an immediate castoff like Wanda and Jonathan, and it’s not. While the others trek for four hours, these two get to take a helicopter to camp. Although they’re not out of the game, though, they do miss out on the first four hours of bonding.

Spencer’s the youngest contestant ever on Survivor. JT doesn’t mind the weather given his line of work as a cattle rancher, but he’s worried about fitting in with the people. Stephen doesn’t expect much from the good old southern boy.

Erinn went camping… in the 7th grade. Jerry just got back from a 12 month tour in Afghanistan with over 100 men under him, but he knows he doesn’t want to be in charge here. Coach, however, wants to be the leader, and he wants to make sure the real survivors survive. He approaches Brendan to tell him his plan of getting the strong to survive, but Brendan’s not so sure he wants a coach.

Upon arrival, the outcasts have a choice. They can either start setting up camp, or they can look for a hidden immunity idol to guarantee their safety on the first time to tribal council. Considering the two candidates, I’m not sure this matters too much if they get the idol. While it would make for an interesting first tribal, the second weakest link would probably take the fall, and then they’d just be dropped next time. Sandy goes for the idol. Sierra, however, knows she’s in the dog house, and wants to come up with some way of redeeming herself.

When her tribe arrives, Sandy hasn’t found the idol yet, but she’ll try again later. They ain’t happy that Sandy didn’t do anything.

Timbira’s still walking when the sun goes down, but they finally arrive, as Sierra’s working away. She has a shelter up already.

Later, Sandy buys herself some time by saying she’s going to look for something, and she manages to dig up… another clue (telling her there will be another clue). The tribe thinks she’s being antisocial while she’s away.

Tyson heads down to the water with a couple of the girls (the two young blondes), where he promptly takes off all his clothes.

In the first challenge, six members of the tribe will race across the sand hills to grab some puzzle planks, untie them, and return them to the start, where the two remaining tribe members will use those puzzle planks to build a staircase. Then any two tribe members will navigate a peg through a table maze to release the tribe flag. They’re playing for fire and immunity. Taj and Sandy will build the staircase for Jalapao; Sierra and Erinn will build the staircase for Timbira. Both tribes arrive at the raft about the same time. It’s still pretty close when they get back to the beach. Timbira works pretty well getting back to the start and gets back first. Carolina and Sydney drag behind for Jalapao. Sierra and Sandy, who nobody wanted, are now taking the lead on getting the puzzle planks done. Jalapao is done with the stairs first. Timbira completes their staircase, and Erinn and Brendan will try to catch up to Spencer and Sydney. Timbira manages to pass Jalapao to win immunity. Sandy better start digging for that idol. Sydney doesn’t want to vote for her… but doesn’t know who else to vote for either.

Taj warns Carolina that she needs to check herself and not get too opinionated.

Based on her performance in the challenge, Spencer doesn’t want to get rid of Sandy any more, unless everybody’s got their minds set on it. Carolina’s up for consideration, based on her lackluster performance and because people consider her bossy.

Carolina apologizes to Sandy for putting her down the previous day because she’s the old lady.

Sandy heads off again to try to find the lone palm tree, which kinda stands out.

At tribal council, Sandy’s lack of work at camp becomes a problem. She knows she’s the old lady no matter what, but she hopes she can fit into the tribe with a bunch of kids. Carolina realizes she’s direct and a little whiny.
