Survivor: Africa Episode 1

Following the season as the number 1 show on television in which Colby handed a million dollars to Tina, Survivor returns for season 3 and this time heads to Africa. While it’s an exotic location worth exploring, the survivors and crew will soon find out this is the harshest environment that Survivor will ever visit, a dustbowl with no access to food (resulting in the need to live off gruel) and native animals that are a serious threat and must be monitored, which largely confines them to one set area.

The Survivor: Africa cast of 16 contestants consists of:

Brandon Quinton
Carl Bilancione
Clarence Black
Diane Ogden
Ethan Zohn
Frank Garrison
Jessie Camacho
Kelly Goldsmith
Kim Johnson
Kim Powers
Lex van den Berghe
Linda Spencer
Lindsey Richter
Silas Gaither
Teresa Cooper
Tom Buchanan

These 16 people will be divided into two tribes.

Samburu (Red): Silas, Kim P, Carl, Linda, Lindsey, Frank, Brandon, and Teresa
Boran (Gold): Ethan, Kelly, Tom, Kim J, Lex, Diane, Clarence, Jessie

They are thrown off the truck and left for dead in the middle of the desert on the equator. They are allowed to choose which supplies they can carry from the baskets on the ground. A word of caution: the animals can be extremely dangerous. This is Africa, and they’ve got all kinds of lions and tigers and elephants.

Because the water at camp must be boiled, they are warned that they need to bring as much with them as they possibly can. Boran decides that the water they have is too much, so they dump two of the three jugs. Their hope is they will ultimately get a source of water, whereas something like canned goods won’t come up again.

Their next issue is the map reading. Diane has been appointed, but she doesn’t really know what she is doing. Big Tom compares the tribe to a bunch of sheep jumping into a hole because the first sheep did. While the others struggle to carry everything, Diane’s just having a casual stroll through the desert, wondering why they can’t keep up.

Frank is growing impatient with the young people on Samburu. Kim P thinks Brandon rocks because his luxury item is ChapStick. Lindsey just started her period, which is really more than anybody needed to know. Frank wanders ahead of everybody because he wants them to keep up the pace and get where they’re going. Upon arrival at their camp, Frank has just one request: pick up the pace because the sun’s going down.

The tribes are given huts made of manure and grass, and they also have a thorn fence surrounding the camps to protect against predators. They must make sure their fence is secure, keep a fire burning all night, and keep at least two people awake at all times to be look outs.

Believing he’s in the army now, Frank proceeds to be a drill sergeant.

Samburu broke three gourds on the hike and lost the cap on one of them, which puts them in a dire water situation. They must now make their way to the water hole to get water. Well, it’s not exactly a water hole. It’s more like mud and assorted bacteria with a little water mixed in.

Aside from Frank, Samburu has another issue: Linda. She’s there to respect the mother country, and she is not a big fan of either the modern world or its inhabitants.

Despite the fact that fire is a safety requirement, there are no hand outs here. The tribes will have to earn their fire. Trying to start a fire with rope and sticks is really quite futile and a big waste of energy.

Jessie’s already getting sick, and she is desperate for water.

Nobody has had any luck with the fire, which is no great surprise, but Samburu gets a break. Kim P goes looking through the medical kit, and in it, she finds a telescope. She figures that if you can start a fire with a magnifying glass, they may be able to start one with that. This theory proves correct, and Silas makes fire. Just make sure you don’t pass out, dude.

Dying of thirst, Boran has decided to open up a can of cherries. Take one and pass it on. Clarence takes two. This does not go unnoticed.

The immunity challenge also serves as a reward challenge. The winner will get immunity, fire, and a cart useful for transporting water. They grab a flaming cart and run. They’ll stop and light stations with torches along the way. Boran is off to a lead that keeps getting bigger. One member will dash up a hill to light a fire (Clarence and Silas are chosen) and then come back down for the final stretch. Boran still leads. Samburu finally manages to catch up as they’re lighting the last fire. Diane falls to the ground as Samburu takes the lead. This challenge was Boran’s to lose, and they did just that. Samburu wins immunity. When it’s said and done, Diane drops to the ground again, and she’s not looking good.

While the others go get water, Clarence volunteers to stay behind and take care of Diane. The rest of the tribe is talking. Clarence really loves them cherries. When they return to camp, they find out that Clarence and Diane had a can of beans when they were away. The other six members of the tribe are not happy. Clarence blames Diane; Diane blames Clarence. The rest of the tribe blames Clarence because they already didn’t trust him from the two cherry incident. Believing she just saved herself, Diane is quite happy with her performance.

With 6 votes, Diane has been voted out due to her status as the weakest member of the tribe. In an effort to send a message to Clarence that he forgives but doesn’t forget, Big Tom votes for him.

Laurel Responds to Wes’ The Bachelorette Controversy

Although Wes indicated after his ouster in The Bachelorette Season 5 Episode 8 that he was the only guy to ever get to the final four with a girlfriend, Laurel Kagay tells People that that girlfriend is not her.

“I was like, ‘What?’” Laurel, 29, tells PEOPLE. “There was this pause before he said my name — and then he said it quite a few times.”

Laurel tells the same story Wes told. They dated for three years, but now they’re friends. “I’m absolutely not with Wes, nor would I be with Wes if he were going on a show to be with another girl,” she says. “That’s absolutely crazy.”

She also wants us to believe he’s less of an unfeeling womanizing self centered stick in the mud than we have seen. “They have not shown Wes’s real personality at all. He’s so funny. When I was in a relationship with him, we were always laughing and having fun. And I never worried about him cheating on me.”

The sordid tale doesn’t end there. In addition to her relationship with Wes, whether it’s over now or not, Laurel also dated Brad Womack, the guy who didn’t want anything to do with any of the 25 hand selected beautiful women during his season of The Bachelor.

As if that’s not enough, she additionally dated Collin Evans, who was on The Bachelorette 3.

As for Wes, she apparently wants Jillian to be dumb enough to give him a shot. “She seems to have fun and has a good personality,” Laurel says, “and he’s really fun and funny. Too bad all this craziness had to go down.”

The Bachelorette Season 5 Episode 8

In the dramatic, yet barely believeable, The Bachelorette 5 Episode 7, first Jake returned to warn Jillian about Wes (after he introduced her to his band in another attempt to get people to hear his music) and his current girlfriend Laurel. She knew right away that Wes was the guy that the warning was about, but she still refused to eliminate him and just followed her gut, which told her to go meet his lying like rugs family. Strike one. Next intervention: Ed, who bailed on the show because his job was at stake, returned to ask for a second chance. I wonder what ABC had to offer his boss for him to be allowed to come back. At the rose ceremony, both Ed and Wes survived, while Michael and Jesse were sent packing.

The final four head to Madrid, Spain. So it’s overnight dates already.

Jillian wonders whether Kiptyn’s out of her league. They walk through the streets of Madrid. He never thought he would be there. This year. Although things have gone better than expected, he thinks a proposal is pretty far off. Jillian says there’s still a lot of time. Like two or three whole weeks. They go to learn some flamenco dancing, which they suck at, but they at least have fun. As the sun sets, they take a scooter to dinner. He reminds her a lot of her dad, which she realizes may well sound creepy. She’s worried that Kiptyn’s too soft and may not call her out when she needs it, but he reassures her that if he’s got an opinion about something, he’ll let her know. Since she is not sure yet about the direction they’re going, Jillian has decided to reject the offer to spend the night in the fantasy suite, but she does want to go back and hang out for a while.

Jillian wants to find out how Reid feels about her. When she’s around him, she can’t stop giggling. He tells her she looks muy bonita, which exhausts his Spanish knowledge. Her Spanish is about as good as his, so the process of ordering from a butcher in Seville proves to be comedic. His family loved her, though he imagines she was just as good with the other three families and Wes’ band. Reid thinks he’s in love. Maybe. He realizes that he’s slow at these things, perhaps slower than the other guys may be. They get the fantasy suite card. He’s leaving this up to her. She declines with him as well, but he doesn’t appear to even get an invite back to spend some time on the bed.

As much as Jillian likes Ed, she missed out on a lot when he abandoned her, such as the hometown dates. They hop on a carriage ride, where he believes he’s starting over. The carriage ride is focused entirely on his leaving and why he decided to come back. She wants to know what it would have been like if she did have the opportunity to meet the family. His response is that everyone would have loved her, and they wouldn’t have had any concerns. That all sounds a little bit too easy. Jillian’s plan is to ask him some serious questions, but for now, her plan is to just keep kissing him. She’s not real sure what her concerns are, since she hasn’t had time to develop those concerns. He wants to know how open she is to moving because it doesn’t sound like he has any interest in moving. Although Ed is interested in spending the night with Jillian, she does not want to spend the night with him either. That lasts about two seconds before she decides to go back to the suite with him. Because he bailed on her, he gets what the two previous guys could not get. They’re greeted by a hallway lined with candles, champagne and strawberries, and of course one bed.

Jillian heads to Barcelona to meet Wes, who would feel at home living around Spanish people because he had a song on his second album that was #1 in Chihuahua, Mexico. This guy just doesn’t quit. They get on bicycles to ride through the parks. Jillian’s a little worried about Wes’ lack of affection. While he’s talking to her about how she’s perfect and he could bear his soul to her, he’s sitting as far away from her as he can. Hypothetically speaking, they’ve decided that he will move to Vancouver. That would be… crazy. Okay, so how about meeting her in the middle? His response: that bird has no foot. Then he spills his beer.

She drops it, but then at dinner, she brings up the Laurel issue again. He doesn’t want to talk about it, as usual. As for the music thing, he’s gotten about all the publicity he needs from this, so he can now go home with that mission accomplished. If he really cared for her, maybe he would have kissed her at least once during their date. The other guys sure have. Wes responds that, if she wants him to show her affection, she will need to be dumb enough to tell him that he’s the one first. Numero uno is most important here. Okay, so how about let’s go back to Laurel. Why would Jake give a specific name? He told Jake the whole story about his girlfriend… uh, I mean, ex-girlfriend…

Will Jillian invite Wes back to the fantasy suite? He’d like to go to the suite with her, but now it’s about time she punch him in the face, which unfortunately does not happen (would have made great TV). She has finally realized that he may have something to hide. He may have something to hide? She feels sorry for him and puts him in a taxi to send him away.

In what was a bye week for the other three guys, Wes has finally gotten kicked off the show after Jillian’s weeks of denial end. He probably didn’t quite get the amount of fame he hoped for, but at least he leaves without his dignity. In his limo ride home, Wes admits he’s got a girlfriend.

Survivor: The Australian Outback Winner

The alliance stuck together in Survivor: The Australian Outback Episode 14, voting out Elisabeth to leave a final three of Keith Famie, Colby Donaldson, and Tina Wesson.

Tina’s in a great spot here. Both the guys will probably bring her with them, so she’s guaranteed a spot in the final two. It’s a matter of what the boys can put together to get themselves there.

With two hours and only three people left, they’ve got an awful lot of time to kill here. This is why the final four is no longer a full episode by itself.

They are given the tools necessary to do some arts and crafts and make an idol to give back to the land. This is part of their reflection about what has happened over the past 42 days.

The next day, they offer up their idols after taking the walk remembering their fellow castaways. Probst gives them some alone time at the waterfall before the tribal council, and when they’re done thinking, they toss their idols in the river.

Keith doesn’t think he has any chance of winning, but he’s fine with it.

With 1/3 of the episode done, it’s time to get to the point. They make their way to tribal council for the final immunity challenge. It’s a Q&A challenge. All this time, and it boils down to some questions about their tribemates.

Which former Survivor would be the one to tell you to work your magic?
Alicia. Everybody is right.

What town is Rodger from?
Crittenden. Everybody is right.

According to their Survivor application, who is the only member of the Barramundi tribe with a masters degree?
Rodger. Everybody is wrong.

Who spent 12 years living in Germany?
Jerri. Everybody is right.

Who is the person in this picture?
Elisabeth’s brother Kenny. Colby and Tina are right.

What two Survivors have tattoos of Chinese characters?
Alicia and Jeff. Nobody is right.

Jeff and Alicia also wear jewelry on the same part of their body. What is it, and where do they wear it?
Thumb rings. Colby is right.

Whose shorts are these?
Nick. Tina is right.

What is Elisabeth’s boyfriend’s name?
Tim. Everybody is right.

What college did they both attend?
Boston College, not to be confused with Boston University. Colby and Tina are right.

With just 2 questions left, Keith is out of the running.

Who said on their Survivor application they would like to be stranded with President Clinton or the pope because they’re the most likely to be rescued?
Nick. Neither are right.

It’s now tied at 7 for the final question.

Who stated on their Survivor application form that their proudest accomplishment was being on the dean’s list in college for 5 semesters?
Amber. Colby wins immunity.

Vote
Keith

Keith has been voted off the island. Colby has gotten his way. Jerri won’t win, and Keith won’t win. Neither the smartest of plays since he’s up against one of the most well liked people on the tribe. Regardless of how well Colby has played most of the game, these choices have been particularly poor.

Tina and Colby both take credit for how far Keith got, and both indicate they wanted to get rid of him when given the chance.

Colby believes that Tina has played the game better than anyone else, apparently himself included. He feels certain he could have won against Keith, but he doesn’t know that he even has a 50/50 shot against Tina. On the basis of sheer stupidity, Colby just simply does not deserve to win this game, but he is a deserving second.

The jury indicates they have not shared any information with anybody else about who they are voting for. Not exactly something that can be controlled, and even if they don’t say anything specificaly, they can certainly beat around the bush.

Tina doesn’t want to tell the jury they should vote for her. Rather, she would like to give the jury a lecture not to vote based on hurt feelings.

Colby guesses he’s supposed to make a speech to the jury that’s supposed to indicate that he deserves to win. He doesn’t know that he does deserve to win. He considers himself a jack of all trades, who didn’t necessarily do anything great but did everything pretty good.

Rodger wants a couple of instances where they did not tell the truth, and to know whether they played the game as ethically as they could. Tina gives an example of the Amber vote. She doesn’t feel that lying is unethical because it’s all part of the game. Colby’s moment is that he lied to Jerri about being in the final three with her. Maybe he did have a struggle with ethics.

Amber wants to know what three things got them to this point, and what are they going to do with the money. Colby refused to mentally check out of the game, fooled himself into thinking he was full with water, and took time out to enjoy the experience every now and then. He would spend the money on a Harley Davidson, buying the building his dad is having to sell due to financial reasons, and taking care of his mom. Tina got there based on strategy, Colby, and heart/God. She would pay off her house, her best friend’s house, and start a fund and spend the interest one time a year on a family that’s in need (an idea she got from Elisabeth).

Elisabeth asks which two people they would exclude from the prize if they could give it to 5 others. Tina says Jerri and Rodger. Colby says Jerri and Keith. Elisabeth does not allow any explanations. Jerri is obvious and didn’t hurt either of them. Rodger’s already got plenty of money. Colby knows he ain’t gonna harm himself by answering Keith.

Keith would like an instance of use of manipulation. Colby says the Mitchell vote, and Tina follows suit. A smart answer considering who they’re talking to, since Keith was saved in the process of that vote.

Alicia asks what they’re most and least proud of. Tina is proud of the role she played. Her least proud moment was every tribal council when she had to vote someone out. Colby starts with his least proud moment, probably today realizing how little respect he’s showed the land. His most proud moment was the water bucket immunity win.

Nick, assuming that Kucha would have won the immunity challenge if Mike didn’t have his accident (an assumption with maybe 50/50 odds of being accurate), wants to know who would be in their places and why if Mike were still around. Colby responds Nick because he had the mental game going before the merge, and Mike as well because he had it together. Tina can’t really answer the question because she didn’t know them very well as a tribe, but she does think Mike would be one of the two.

Jerri would like to allow them to clear their conscience for something they might have done to another person. Oh, it’s obvious what she’s looking for here. Tina felt awful after looking in Kel’s bag for beef jerky. Colby feels guilty about Rodger and Elisabeth and Alicia, but he doesn’t have any regrets.

Colby doesn’t have any last words.

Tina returns to how this is a game of strategy.

Colby (Rodger)
Colby (Amber)
Colby (Nick)
Tina (Jerri)
Tina (Elisabeth)

By a vote of 4-3, Tina Wesson is the Survivor: The Australian Outback winner. Congrats to Colby for handing the game away.

Interestingly enough, Tina was an alternate. Two weeks before this all started, she wasn’t going. Keith, meanwhile, was supposed to be on the first one.

At the finale, Michael shows off his hands. They look good as new. Despite what happened, he felt it was the greatest experience.

Debb didn’t want to be part of the reunion because the press tore her apart. There’s no way she’d do this again. Due to how much he suffered, Mitchell would also never do this again.

Kel has forgiven Jerri, although he doesn’t like her. She can’t count on getting a Christmas card from him. Jerri doesn’t expect everyone to like her, which is a pretty safe bet, but she hopes people can differentiate between Survivor and real life.

Kimmi called Alicia, but Alicia didn’t return the call. Alicia says she’s over it now, but Kimmi won’t be getting a Christmas card either.

With a feeling he was going to go the night he was voted out, Jeff sabotaged the tribe, releasing their 13 fish into the water.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Episode 13

The top 14 danced on So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Episode 12, and tonight two more will go home.

Randi & Evan are safe. Karla & Vitolio are in the bottom three as usual.

Janette & Brandon are safe. Melissa & Ade are also safe. That leaves Kayla & Kupono in the bottom three. Mia is shocked because they gave the best performance last night, and it does not appear she will vote against either of them.

Caitlin & Jason are safe despite that creepy alien routine. Phillip & Jeanine are in the bottom three.

Karla, Vitolio, Kayla, Kupono, Phillip, and Jeanine will be dancing for their lives.

The judges are unanimous in their decision about the girls. Jeanine’s solo was the strongest of the evening, so she is safe. Kayla’s usually brilliant, but tonight she was not really dancing from the heart. Karla hasn’t quite captured the same star quality she had at the beginning, so she will be going home. She will remember that contemporary dance and all the friends she’s made.

The judges are again unanimous with the guys. Phillip is great at what he does, although tonight was a little desperate. He still has a lot of work to manage the other genres he does from week to week, but they’re going to give him the shot to keep doing that. Vitolio looks like a major star on stage but doesn’t really deliver anything apart from a great presence. Kupono’s solo was weak. Vitolio is joining his partner in going home. He will take with him the compliments from people how he inspires them.

America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 4

Last night on America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 3, we got a look at Thia Megia and Kevin Skinner.

Divani (no last name apparently) will be singing. It ain’t gonna be pretty. She sings Queen of the Night. She won’t be the queen of this night. Only Piers buzzes her, but she stops half way through because there is too much booing.

Jolie & Lester have come here with their Granny and Jethro and have brought a guitar, a pot, and a lawnmower. She plays the guitar and sings while Nick throws vegetables at Lester so they can be ground up in the mower. Yeah, I don’t think this was supposed to make sense.

A group of orphan Annies, 27 in all ages 8-14, from the Lake Houston Performing Arts Center is up next. They shake their groove thing. Sharon thought it was just perfect. Hoff thought they lit up Houston.

Pam Martin is here with Viva, a dancing dog. She is a dog trainer, which brings hope for a good routine. Sharon thought she was fabulous. Hoff says it was the best dog dance act he’s ever seen (has he seen a lot?). Viva Las Vegas.

Marti Brill thinks he’s a magician. Outlook not good. He’s been a professional magician since he was 5 apparently. Piers is yawning and buzzes. Sharon follows suit. David figures he’s got an hour to fill. Piers calls him the most annoying man in Miami.

Joseph Constantine and his wife KC are illusionists. She hops into a box and then disappears. Hasselhoff thought it was very nice, but they’ve seen that act at least 6 or 7 times already. Piers says that was the best example of that act they’ve seen, though. Despite their sob story about having hit hard times, Hoff has to reject the act like he rejected all those that came before it. Piers and Sharon, however, say yes. They’re definitely going to need to step it up if they hope to continue beyond the next stage.

It’s the final act of the night, and the trend has been for the final act to be great. Hairo Torres is a breakdancer. Piers would like to see more of that because he’s one of the more original acts they’ve seen. Hasselhoff thought it was incredible.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Episode 12

Asuka and Jonathan were eliminated on So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Episode 11, and tonight the top 14 will dance.

Mia Michaels joins Nigel and Mary at the judges’ table. She says that her opinion has changed for the better for a small male dancer with the initials Brandon. Perhaps that means she’s done being hateful for no apparent reason.

Janette Manrara & Brandon Bryant
Style: Cha Cha
Choreographer: Jean Marc & France Genereaux
Song: Hush Hush; Hush Hush by The Pussycat Dolls
Nigel: Possibly the best damn cha cha I have ever seen on this show. Would have graced a world championship stage if this were a professional dance competition. Brandon is the Michaelangelo of the dance floor.
Mary: Janette made that look exciting. Can’t believe Brandon keeps being brilliant every week. Two first class tickets on the hot tamale train.
Mia: Brandon has so much ability and potential that I am not going to be satisfied until it’s fully realized. Janette has been on fire since day one.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-01

Kayla Rodomski & Kupono Aweau
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Theme: a trip to the dark side with a vampire
Song: Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation
Nigel: Kupono is a new man up there this week. So much technique thrown into a very modern routine. Both of them are reaching their potential.
Mary: Alive and kicking. Kayla’s legs are the most beautiful. An electric feel between the two of them. Staying on the hot tamale train.
Mia: Sonya’s best piece ever on this show. Kayla is amazing. Kupono has applied every note the judges are giving him.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-02

Randi Evans & Evan Kasprzak
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Joey Dowling
Song: Rich Man’s Frug from Sweet Charity by the 2005 Broadway Revival Cast
Nigel: Disappointed with Evan’s performance, but the pair of them are still within the top 10 dancers.
Mary: Done fairly well. Got the character really well. Enjoyable.
Mia: Need to take that kind of work to the next level because of your height. Randi’s movement was a little heavy. Expect more from Evan.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-03

Caitlin Kinney & Jason Glover
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Brian Friedman
Theme: An alien that blew up Earth is looking for the last man on the planet.
Song: Creator by Santigold
Nigel: Brian Friedman comes from another planet. Very weird, but they committed themselves 100%.
Mary: Didn’t play to your strengths.
Mia: Danced the fun piece really well. Enjoyable.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-04

Jeanine Mason & Phillip Chbeeb
Style: Hip Hop
Choreographers: Napoleon & Tabitha Dumo
Song: Love Lockdown by Kanye West
Nigel: If you guys keep dancing like that, you should be chained together for life. Jeanine makes it look like every style is her style. This is a great style for Phillip.
Mary: Really brought it on. Jeanine was just crazy good in this routine keeping up with Phillip.
Mia: A little sloppy because of the chain, but great job otherwise.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-05

Melissa Sandvig & Ade Obayomi
Style: Classical Ballet
Choreographer: Thordal Christensen
Theme: Romeo and Juliet love scene
Song: Romeo & Juliet: Prokofiev’s Suite No. 1 Op. 64b 6th Movement by Orchestre De La Suisse Romane & Armin Jordan
Nigel: Beautifully danced. Superb job by Melissa. Ade’s feet could have been better.
Mary: Flawless chemistry. So great to see Melissa in her style. In a dream-like state.
Mia: Excited that was danced as well as it was danced. A fairy tale. Melissa was brilliant. A true ballerina.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-06

Before the final dance, they announce the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which is meant to give underprivileged kids scholarship for dance. The people involved in this show, including many of the choreographers, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Debbie Allen, Paula Abdul, and Katie Holmes are involved.

Karla Garcia & Vitolio Jeune
Style: Quick Step
Choreographers: Jean Marc & France Genereaux
Theme: A museum where Vitolio is a statue
Song: Puttin’ on the Ritz by Rufus Wainwright
Nigel: Very good quick step. Sometimes the lines took away from the style, but entertaining overall.
Mary: So much for the kiss of death dance. Really well done.
Mia: Amazing what a choreographer can do for dancers. He made you. Performed well. Vitolio needs to be more consistent with performances like that. Karla looked scared at times.
Number: 1-888-TEMPO-07
