American Idol Season 10 Episode 15

Following the performance of the top 12 girls in American Idol Season 10 Episode 14, it’s now time for the finalists to be chosen. There will be a top 10. Or a top 13. Or, uh, some number less than 24.

Randy offers an explanation, sort of. After the public vote of the top 10 has been revealed, the judges will decide who they want to sing again for the wild cards. Seacrest has determined there really is no game plan. Yeah, there isn’t.

After Seacrest manages to kill a bunch of time (how do they have time to kill with a dozen or so results to announce and a wild card round?), we now start the results for the boys.

Robbie Rosen and Scotty McCreery are the first two. The obvious answer here is that Scotty is in the top 10, but Robbie is not.

Clint Jun Gamboa, Jordan Dorsey, and Jovany Barreto are up next. I’m going to pass on the lot of them. America agrees. None of them advance.

Now we head over to the other side of the stage. Pia Toscano and Lauren Alaina are up first. I’d be surprised if both don’t make it through. They do.

Tatynisa Wilson and Julie Zorrilla are up first. My vote’s for Julie, in spite of her performance last night, but I don’t think her earlier performances will carry her through in the voting. Tatynisa has been cut, and so has Julie.

Kendra Chantelle, Ashton Jones, and Karen Rodriguez are next. I gotta go with Karen. Ashton is out. So is Kendra, as Karen advances.

Back to the boys. Tim Halperin, Casey Abrams, and Jacob Lusk are next. Based on last night’s results alone, I’m assuming Tim is gone, but I like him as a wildcard. Jacob has made it. Casey has, too. Tim has not.

Naima Adedapo, Thia Megia, and Lauren Turner are next. Thia is the obvious choice here.

Brett Loewenstern and Paul McDonald are next. Can’t picture either of them going through, but if I have to pick, I’m going with Paul. He is the one to advance.

Haley Reinhart and Rachel Zevita are the last two girls. I won’t pretend to be interested either way, but the last girl to join the top 10 is Haley.

Stefano Langone and James Durbin are the final two boys. Obviously, James is the one to advance here, rounding out the top 10.

It’s not over yet, though. Now the judges will have to make their wild card picks.

So after the great big secret, we find out how the next round is going to work, almost. 6 people will be receiving another chance: 3 boys and 3 girls.

Ashton Jones
Song: And I Am Telling You from Dreamgirls by Jennifer Holliday/Jennifer Hudson
Steven: I thought you brought it like you brought it before.
Jennifer: I felt your passion.
Randy: Still love the attitude.

Stefano Langone
Song: I Need You Now by Smokie Norful
Randy: Did it justice.
Jennifer: You came through when you needed to come through.
Steven: Brought it right now.

Kendra Chantelle
Song: Georgia on my Mind by Ray Charles
Randy: Very nice at the end.

The other two judges will not speak. Reason? They’ve wasted too damn much time. Really? 2 hours is not enough? And they’re just realizing it now?

Jovany Barreto
Song: Angel (Spanglish) by Jon Secada
Jennifer: Good job. All you could do.

Dude, we’ve already seen the Spanglish, done better.

Naima Adedapo
Song: For All We Know by Donnie Hathaway
Steven: Came from way deep down inside.

Robbie Rosen
Song: Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word by Elton John
Randy: Very nice. Very tender.

I was disappointed with the lack of Julie Zorrilla and Tim Halperin, but from those who were chosen, there wasn’t a bad song in the bunch. The only clear answer from that for me is Stefano will be a finalist.

The judges aren’t ready, but they’d better come to a conclusion quickly, or else, since the terrible producers of this show don’t understand the concept of time management. In the meantime, we get to watch Jennifer Lopez sing and wonder how she became such a big star.

Ashton Jones is in the final group. Finally, Jennifer reveals the numbers. Two more will advance. Stefano Langone is next. Naima Adedapo is the final finalist.

For the tl;dr keeping score, the American Idol Season 10 top 13 are:

Ashton Jones
Casey Abrams
Haley Reinhart
Jacob Lusk
James Durbin
Karen Rodriguez
Lauren Alaina
Naima Adedapo
Paul McDonald
Pia Toscano
Scotty McCreery
Stefano Langone
Thia Megia

Thia Megia
Song: Out Here on My Own by Irene Cara

Number: 1-866-IDOLS-10

Lauren Alaina
Song: Turn on the Radio by Reba McEntire
Jennifer: So effortless. So great to watch.
Randy: Natural gift, but I don’t even believe you know how good you are. Kelly Clarkson meets Carrie Underwood.

Number: 1-866-IDOLS-11

Pia Toscano
Song: I’ll Stand by You by The Pretenders/Carrie Underwood
Randy: First standing O of this new season. Just put yourself in the top.

Survivor: Redemption Island Episode 3

Shaking hands with the opposing tribe proved to be Matt’s downfall in Survivor: Redemption Island Episode 2.

Matt was so comfortable with his position in the tribe that he didn’t even bother packing.

They get treemail with a bag of rocks. Those who choose their tribe colored stone will go to Redemption Island. For Zapatera, this is David and Steve. For Ometepe, Ashley and Andrea will be going. Not realizing that her boyfriend has been voted out, Andrea views this as an opportunity to further solidify her relationship with him. Her message to both the people on the island: she didn’t vote for either of them. This behavior isn’t going to win her any friends.

These four tribe members will be the witnesses to the duel between Francesca and Matt. What they tell their tribemates when they get back is up to them.

For today’s duel, they will use sticks and rope to make a long pole to retrieve three keys and open three locks. Francesca has her stick together quickly and with it the first key. Matt’s stick isn’t up to par. Francesca gets her second key. Matt’s stick is still no good. Francesca’s stick finally falls apart, which allows Matt to get his first key. Then Matt gets his second key. In the race for the third key, Matt wins the challenge to stay alive. Francesca is now officially out of the game. Good riddance after the ridiculousness of her gameplay alongside her buddy Kristina.

When Andrea returns from Redemption Island, Rob tells her he’s still looking out for her. Neither of them trust each other, but they’ll work together for now, you know, probably.

David and Steve return from their trip and tell Russell that Matt’s gone.

Since Russell can’t find the hidden immunity idol, Stephanie creates a fake one instead.

In addition to his scheming, Russell’s also not doing much at camp, so Steve has a proposal. Let’s throw the challenge and get rid of him.

At the immunity challenge, three members of each tribe will be strapped to a wheel, while three other members spin the wheel, sending them underwater for a mouthful of water, which they will spit into a tube until they release a ball that must be sent through a slide puzzle. In addition to immunity, they are playing for comfort: chairs, pillows, a tarp, blankets, and a lantern. Ralph and Sarita sit out for Zapatera. Julie’s not happy about this challenge throwing strategy, but it really doesn’t matter since she herself can’t make enough of a difference. Ometepe wins immunity and reward.

After watching this challenge unfold, Russell thinks they threw it. You can’t give Boston Rob momentum.

No time for Ometepe to relax. When they get back with reward, everybody starts looking for the clue to the idol. Having learned from the past when he didn’t care about the hidden immunity idol, Boston Rob’s searching and searching. Then he convinces Philip to stop sitting around. Underneath Phil is the clue. The clue is useless to him, but he’d rather have it than not.

The plan is to split the vote, 3 votes for Russell and 3 for Stephanie. That leaves the other 3 votes for Russell and his allies. Who can he get to flip? He suggests Julie. I’m not sure joining them makes any more sense than sticking with who she’s with, but I don’t think she really has anything to lose. If this works, the others deserve it for assuming they were in control, so much so that they could just throw the challenge.

Russell accuses them of throwing the challenge at tribal council. Mike does not deny this. Steve, however, does, and Dave follows suit.

Then there’s Ralph. It’s a good thing Jeff is there to translate for him. Could we get some subtitles, please?

Jeff warns them: you’re so divided that you’re in trouble come merge.

With 4 votes, Russell has been voted off the island for the first time in three seasons. Unfortunate because I would have liked to see some comeuppance from the idiot majority so desperate to get rid of him that they treated him as a throwaway.

American Idol Season 10 Episode 13

The top 12 boys were picked in American Idol Season 10 Episode 12. Tonight they perform for America’s votes, which for the first time includes online voting (via Facebook only). They can pick whatever song they want, without a stupid theme holding them back.

Clint Jun Gamboa
Song: Superstitious by Stevie Wonder
Steven: Beautiful. Brilliant.
Jennifer: Good. Could feel you had the jitters a little, but it didn’t impact your performance.
Randy: Brilliant. Not karaoke.

Jovany Barreto
Song: I’ll Be by Edwin McCain
Steven: I loved it.
Jennifer: Happy people got to see what you can really do.
Randy: Very karaoke. Didn’t get it.

Jordan Dorsey
Song: OMG by Usher
Steven: You had the moves, but it wasn’t my favorite performance of yours.
Jennifer: Not sure that is who you are.
Randy: Pitchy. Pales in comparison to the original. Not good.

Tim Halperin
Song: Streetcorner Symphony by Rob Thomas
Steven: Not sure that song did you any justice. Really let down.
Jennifer: Did it well, but that’s not your strength.
Randy: Cool song but not your best.

I remember the brief glimpses we’ve gotten of Tim already and expected him to go far, but this may well have sunk him.

Brett Loewenstern
Song: Light My Fire by the Doors
Steven: You were on fire.
Jennifer: Liked the performance and that you are who you are.
Randy: Some pitch problems, but you’re definitely fun and bold.

James Durbin
Song: You’ve Got Another Thing Comin by Judas Priest
Steven: Crazy good.
Jennifer: That’s what everybody needs to do when they’re up there.
Randy: This is how you do it.

Robbie Rosen
Song: Angel by Sarah McLachlan
Steven: Can sing a ballad like nobody’s business.
Jennifer: When you sing a song, you tell a story.
Randy: Not a great performance. Really pitchy.

Scotty McCreery
Song: Letters from Home by John Michael Montgomery
Steven: Don’t think you could have picked a better song.
Jennifer: You’re born to sing country music.
Randy: I’m a big fan.

Win or lose, it’s clear Scotty has a career ahead of him as a country artist.

Stefano Langone
Song: Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars
Steven: Love the way your voice cut through the air in this room.
Jennifer: So consistent. You’re a beast.
Randy: Enjoying it like we’re at a concert. Could be on the radio right now.

Paul McDonald
Song: Maggie May by Rod Stewart
Steven: Real character about your voice.
Jennifer: Love somebody who smiles while they’re singing.
Randy: So unique and different.

Jacob Lusk
Song: House Is Not a Home by Luther Vandross
Steven: Honored to be in your presence.
Jennifer: This is what’s so exciting about this show.
Randy: Luther would be so proud of you.

Casey Abrams
Song: I Put a Spell on You by Screamin Jay Hawkins
Steven: In your mind good and out of your mind unreal.
Jennifer: Somebody wants it bad.
Randy: So different, so unique. More, more, more.

The Biggest Loser Season 11 Episode 9

The parents in the black team threw the game away in The Biggest Loser Season 11 Episode 8, leading to the elimination of both Deni and Jesse.

Everybody is now going home for two weeks, after which they will return to compete in a 5k.

Courtney goes to work at her family’s ice cream shop. Of all the places to fall off the wagon, this could easily be one.

Jesse takes responsibility for his divorce from Arthur’s mom, which he views as one of the main factors for Arthur’s weight gain. As much as the morbidly obese parents could have set better examples for him, when somebody gets to the point of 646 pounds, it’s a choice, which Arthur realizes.

Austin heads to the bowling alley, where he must say no to all the foods people are trying to tempt him with. Seeing as it’s his 21st birthday, they also surprise him with a cake. A piece of cake once in a while isn’t the end of the world, as long as you keep it in your calories and understand the concept of moderation. I say go ahead and have some, but he decides to pass.

Olivia’s husband has always run, but she made the decision to not run with him. Now she’s able to train for the 5k with his help.

Kaylee has decided to act as a trainer for her family, getting everybody into the gym for a workout.

Arthur takes note of the little things. For example, he no longer has to put the seat of his car all the way back and is able to fit into it without squeezing, a practice that would have been extremely dangerous in the event of an accident.

Hannah makes her way back on to the volleyball court, which she hasn’t done since her accident. She’s frustratingly bad at times, but at least she’s trying.

Following their two weeks back at home, the contestants return to the ranch and are greeted by Alison, who welcomes them back with the promised challenge. Day 1, they ran a 5k with their partners, which determined who they would train with. Tonight they will be completing the 5k again, this time as individuals. Oh, and the stakes remain the same. They will be choosing their trainers. 7 get Bob and Jillian, and 7 get Brett and Cara. This has all the potential to end somebody’s game. The only person really looking for a change is Jen.

Justin is the first to reach 1 km, followed by Rulon. They are also the first to 2 km. 25 minutes in, Justin, Rulon, Jen, Kaylee, and Marci are at 3km, while Sarah and Arthur fight to stay out of last, or in last in Sarah’s case. She plans to throw the challenge so she does not have to make the choice, having worked with all four trainers. When they get down to the last two, Justin insists she step up and take control. In the end, this does make a difference because even way down in thirteenth place, there’s still a decision to be made after all.

First: Justin (32 minutes)
Second: Rulon
Third: Kaylee
Fourth: Jen
Fifth: Austin
Sixth: Marci (first black team member to finish)
Seventh: Olivia (last person guaranteed to have a choice)
Eighth: Hannah
Ninth: Moses
Tenth: Irene
Eleventh: Courtney
Twelfth: Ken
Thirteenth: Sarah
Fourteenth: Arthur

Red Team: Justin, Rulon, Kaylee, Austin, Moses, Ken, Arthur
Black Team: Jen, Marci, Olivia, Hannah, Irene, Courtney, Sarah

Jen’s defection back to the black team means that at least one other spot must change. With Sarah deciding to stick with the black team, an emotional Arthur is left without a choice and will be heading over to the red team. He views this new red suit as his funeral suit. If anyone has a chance to survive in enemy territory, Arthur may well be that person. He may be down over 100 pounds, but he still has a couple hundred to go.

With the teams revealed, the weigh in starts now.

Jen: 197 pounds (-14, 6.64%)
Irene: 185 pounds (-10, 5.13%)
Hannah: 182 pounds (-11, 5.70%)
Olivia: 190 pounds (-12, 5.87%)
Courtney: 246 pounds (-10, 3.91%)
Marci: 167 pounds (-14, 7.73%)
Sarah: 194 pounds (-10, 4.90%)
Black Total: 1361 pounds (-81, 5.62%)

Rulon: 350 pounds (-17, 4.63%)
Austin: 289 pounds (-10, 3.34%)
Ken: 286 pounds (-5, 1.72%)
Moses: 317 pounds (-5, 1.55%)
Kaylee: 179 pounds (-1, 0.56%)
Justin: 262 pounds (-8, 2.96%)
Arthur: 390 pounds (-16, 3.94%)
Red Total: 2073 pounds (-62, 2.90%)

Both Austin & Ken and Moses & Kaylee struggled at home. They may still be headed in the right direction, but there is clearly some more work to be done. As The Biggest Loser for his team this week, Rulon is safe, leaving Arthur in danger. He says he’s ready to go home now, but Jillian asks him to fight, while Bob asks that they not make the decision based on alliances and numbers.

Votes
Justin: Arthur
Rulon: Arthur
Arthur: Ken
Kaylee: Arthur
Moses: Arthur

As much as it could be argued that Arthur needs to be there, so does the rest of the team, who realistically can’t keep chipping away at their numbers to support someone from another team. With 4 votes, Arthur is not The Biggest Loser. From his starting weight of 507 pounds, Arthur has lost 158 pounds to be 345 pounds today. 32% down already is quite the start.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The Biggest Loser Season 11 Episode 10, which airs Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.

The Amazing Race 18 Episode 2

The Amazing Race Episode 1 left off with a cliffhanger. Following a stupid challenge in which half the teams did not solve their puzzle but instead just asked the other racers for the answer, Jet & Cord were left way behind the rest of the pack when they were the only team who either did not get the answer one way or another.

The virtual pit stop for the previous leg left the standings as follows:

First: Gary & Mallory
Second: Amanda & Kris
Third: Kisha & Jen
Fourth: Zev & Justin
Fifth: Flight Time & Big Easy
Sixth: Jaime & Cara
Seventh: Margie & Luke
Eighth: Ron & Christina
Ninth: Mel & Mike
Tenth: Kent & Vyxsin
Eleventh: Jet & Cord

Teams must now figure out that the clue is leading them to an anchor beside City Town Hall. There are two charter flights to Broken Hill, a small mining town 684 miles away, and the first flight is available to the first six teams to sign up. This will be the equalizer Jet & Cord needed. Several teams opt to take the ferry back because that’s the way they came, though the first couple take taxis instead. We learn that Christina’s not done whining about the way her dad treats her, and we also learn that Mel’s going to limp his way through the race and probably will be eliminated tonight or if not soon after.

Flight 1 (departs at 6:00AM): Kisha & Jen, Zev & Justin, Jaime & Cara, Margie & Luke, Mel & Mike, Kent & Vyxsin
Flight 2 (departs at 6:30AM): Flight Time & Big Easy, Ron & Christina, Gary & Mallory, Amanda & Kris, Jet & Cord

Being on the second flight means that Amanda & Kris have their work cut out for them since they have that U-turn to do.

Teams must now drive themselves to the Living Desert and search for their next clue in the outback. The detour is a choice between spirit world or natural world. In spirit world, teams use traditional materials to create an aboriginal ground mosaic, then perform a dance on their mosaic. In natural world, teams create a series of aboriginal territory markers using natural paint, which they must put in their mouths and spit on to stencils to create images.

Spirit World: Zev & Justin, Kisha & Jen, Mel & Mike, Jaime & Cara, Margie & Luke, Kent & Vyxsin, Gary & Mallory, Amanda & Kris, Jet & Cord, Flight Time & Big Easy, Ron & Christina

Everybody opts for the spirit world detour, and they’re all there at the same time trying to complete the task. Most teams seem to have difficulty following basic directions of dancing on their mosaics, rather than near/around them. As the second to last team to complete the detour, Amanda & Kris must now do the other one as well. Their only hope is that Ron & Christina keep arguing with each other in multiple languages, but even then they still end up in last.

Once they’re through with the detour, teams will drive themselves to the home of the Magpies, at Central Football Club in Broken Hill. There, they get dressed up as kangaroos and must figure out where to go next based on the periodic table of elements. Many streets are named after elements, and the two that are highlighted are the only two that cross each other. Mercury is easy enough, but who’s ever heard of bismuth? Apparently, Kent has. And the Internet.

On the way there, Margie drops her foot. Luke insists on continuing forward without it, but eventually Margie decides they have to go back for it. Now they just have to find it. Rather than just leaving it there, Mel picks it up and gives it to them, ending their search, but in the process Mel & Mike do get directions to the next clue.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Junction Mine, a former silver mine. They will have to continue wearing their kangaroo suits to the pit stop, but they are allowed to put on different shoes.

Amanda & Kris continue to struggle to overcome their U-turn. He keeps informing her they’re in last, but she nonetheless wants a break. It’s going to be somewhat close, as they are only a few minutes behind Gary & Mallory and Ron & Christina.

First: Zev & Justin (win a trip to Cancun)
Second: Flight Time & Big Easy
Third: Jet & Cord
Fourth: Kisha & Jen
Fifth: Margie & Luke
Sixth: Mel & Mike
Seventh: Kent & Vyxsin
Eighth: Jaime & Cara
Ninth: Gary & Mallory
Tenth: Ron & Christina
Eliminated: Amanda & Kris

As much as the editors wanted to create drama, Amanda & Kris have been eliminated because they got a U-Turn within the first half an hour of the race. Do us a favor and don’t try this stupid twist again. Unlike Jet & Cord, who were given an equalizer to make up for the task they struggled with for what seemed to be hours, Amanda & Kris had an uphill battle the whole way. I would have much preferred the alternative ending, the elimination of the bickering father and daughter.

American Idol Season 10 Episode 11

Following some additional performances, the judges split the contestants into four rooms in American Idol Season 10 Episode 10 to bring us closer to the top 24. Tonight they go to Vegas and perform songs by The Beatles. They must learn and perform a song in “just” 24 hours. 1/3 of them will be cut at the conclusion of this round.

Peggi Blu has been invited to the auditions as a vocal coach merely for the sake of drama. After shouting at them, she tells them she is prepared to watch them die on stage, and wants them to bury each other anyway.

Most of these contestants don’t know very much about this group whose songs they’re about to sing that weren’t even on iTunes until just recently.

James Durbin and Stefano Langone get good reviews from the judges.

Pia Tescano and Karen Rodriguez have known each other for years but seem to have come to the auditions at the same time accidentally. Jennifer liked the show.

Jacob Lusk, Naima Adedapo, and Haley Reinhart slow things down. Aside from the fact that I’m pretty sure they are singing a lullaby, it sounds quite good. Rachel Zevita, Lauren Turner, Tim Halperin, and Julie Zorrilla continue with the strongly performed ballads.

Jerome Bell, Lakeisha Lewis, and Tatynisa Wilson pick the tempo back up. Randy thought they were quite strong, sort of.

Tennessee singers Paul McDonald and Kendra Chantelle sound good together.

Hopefully tonight will be the first time Ashley Sullivan does not have a nervous breakdown. Whatever the case, since they’re in Vegas (and for no other reason), she plans to get married where her hero, Britney Spears, got married. Her new husband is getting married, or he’s dying in his sleep.

Melinda Ademi and Thia Megia are now free from creepy vocal coach Peggi. She ain’t happy, but the judges are somewhat accepting of them.

With a new last name, Ashley Suraiva steps up to perform with Sophia Shorai. Steven thought it was just okay, but Randy didn’t get it.

Lauren Alaina, Denise Jackson, and Scotty McCreery sound good, but their song choice doesn’t quite fit them. I was just happy to hear Scotty singing a different song than usual.

Robbie Rosen, Aaron Sanders, and Jordan Dorsey worked together on group day and are back together again. The judges are impressed.

With the performances at an end, it’s time to start cutting.

Thia Megia, Scotty McCreery, Jordan Dorsey, Ashton Jones, Robbie Rosen, and Lauren Alaina advance. Molly DeWolf, Carson Higgins, and Caleb Hawley are among those who get cut. Denise Jackson, Melinda Ademi, and finally Ashley Sullivan have also been cut (and no tears).

Now that the cuts have been made, we head back to LA, where the top 40 will sing again before the final judgment.

In spite of the fact that they had two hours to kill, the Idol producers still couldn’t get through more than a handful of results. Nothing like dragging it out endlessly.
