The Celebrity Apprentice 4 Episode 2

As much as he wanted to sink Richard Hatch for physically violating him, in a story that got more severe each time he told it, David Cassidy just didn’t have the fight Trump was looking for in The Celebrity Apprentice 4 Episode 1 and was the first person to be fired.

The guys predicted the outcome as it went down and were happy to see Richard Hatch back in the fold. Jose Canseco, however, is not happy.

Having been called a little girl, Lisa Rinna realizes she can’t trust anybody.

As the winning project manager, Star Jones is able to give the task’s money to the man who she credits with saving her life, since he diagnosed and treated her heart problem.

Ivanka’s got the week off, so that means we get Eric instead.

This week’s task is to write a children’s book based on at least one member of their team. They will be judged on originality, presentation to the kids, and age appropriateness. They will be judged by a book publisher and Holly Robinson Peete (what?).

Meat Loaf will be the project manager for the men because nobody else wants to. Lisa Rinna will be the project manager for the women because the others insist. NeNe says they chose her because she won’t be able to handle it, so they can just get rid of her now.

Mark McGrath and John Rich will be the writers for their team. Mark’s idea is that Lil John turns into a super hero.

Unlike the men, the women do not have clearly defined roles, which just means they’re yelling over each other.

When they meet with the book publisher, the men are told to stay away from rhymes unless they have someone who really knows how to make it work. John Rich takes this as a challenge.

The men dismiss Jose’s ideas. He finds this offensive because he wrote two books. Well, let me know how you can apply Major League Baseball steroid abuse to children, and we’ll talk. He proceeds to rant about why he dislikes what they’re doing, but he has no idea how to correct it.

After much discussion, the women finally come up with a concept, a little lion who doesn’t know how to roar. They’re desperately trying to tie this in with deafness and sign language. Whether they have a deaf person on their team or not, Dionne’s concern is that this is not age appropriate for 4 and 5 year olds. Lisa finally makes a decision, opting to go with a fun story rather than a heavy moral one.

Meat Loaf sends Jose and Gary to the wrong address with the props. Offering up a critique of himself, he says he’s doing horrible as a project manager. When he realizes it, he either fails to leave a voicemail, or Jose just doesn’t check it. Regardless, Jose and Gary have spent half an hour in the wrong place. So then Jose calls up their contact and starts arguing with her, leading to both of them having a power trip. He’s famous (or was at one time), and she’s the boss.

By the time Eric arrives, he’s there to watch the fireworks between Meat Loaf and Gary and Jose.

Niki remains concerned about the direction the women are going, still too old for their audience.

Star thinks she’s been assigned to too many tasks. Along with NeNe, she will be writing, illustrating, coloring, and picking the font (picking the font, really?).

At the costume shop, it’s Mark’s turn to babysit Gary. Meanwhile, Jose will be dressing as a woman, and so will Hatch.

Don Jr. has concerns that the women don’t have an original idea, one of the three key criteria he gave them at the start of the task.

While the rest of the team is elsewhere, they call Star to get a cover printed. Lisa has not approved a cover, and Star refuses to do so in her absence, nor will she print one until it’s approved. Before Lisa approves the cover, Star would like a favor. Not content with the team getting credit for the book, Star wants her name on the cover. Lisa shoots this idea down. Good. If she wanted her name, she should have made the cover rather than being difficult just for the sake of being difficult. Dionne pipes up. She wants her name on the cover, too. What’s wrong with these chicks? After much bickering, Lisa is told by Star to make a decision, so she repeats what she’s already said 12 times. It’s a team effort. It will say Team ASAP. Accept it and move on. Lisa realizes she’s the captain of the Titanic, but regardless she doesn’t want to be taken down by a bunch of bitches.

Based on size alone, Jose has been assigned to be Mrs. Canseco. Meat Loaf later realizes that he’s given Jose a very large part with a lot of words.

At the presentation, the women manage to put their bickering aside, and they deliver a presentation that everybody is receptive to. The men have been far more cohesive throughout, so it’s no surprise when they likewise deliver a good presentation.

Meat Loaf says his whole team consists of stars. Nobody negative, not even Jose.

Gary thought Meat was incredible. Richard liked his project management style.

After beating around the bush, Trump asks a question Meat Loaf’s more willing to answer: who was the hardest one to handle? Gary has trouble focusing. As they’re talking about Gary, he asks whether they’re talking about him. Well, that about sums up his lack of focus.

Dionne thought Lisa had a lot to learn.

NeNe was surprised at Lisa, in a bad way. This from the woman who expected Lisa to fail from the beginning.

When Trump tosses the books across the table, the men struggle with a simple problem: they can’t read the other team’s book.

The judges liked the way Lisa held up the book and showed it to the audience, La Toya in her role, the repetition in the story, and the audience participation. They didn’t like that the lead character was not as fleshed out in the book as it was on stage, the font (that Star claimed as one of her main responsibilities) was too small, and the theme was too sophisticated. So basically what was lacking most was what Dionne and Star insisted on taking credit for, very vocally.

As for the men, they thought the story was incredible, the rhyming was terrific, and it was age appropriate. However, Jose was very stiff, they didn’t like his character, they thought the confetti may have scared the children, and Meat Loaf should have held up the book while narrating.

The men’s team wins. As the winning project manager, an emotional Meat Loaf gets $20,000 for his charity, The Painted Turtle. Additionally, Trump will get their book published, and that will also go to the charity.

Lisa says that she received physical support from her team, but not emotional support. Dionne did not. Star did, in the way she does, without kindness.

Lisa acknowledges she has much to learn, to which Star giggles.

NeNe thinks everybody is wrong, although she agrees Lisa was not a good project manager.

Trump says that they lost largely because of the theme, which would fall on Dionne, but Star does not think Dionne should be fired. Niki objected to the theme, agreeing it was not age appropriate.

Star’s defense is that the theme and the book may not have been great, but at least they had something.

Marlee would fire Dionne. Not because of the theme. She’s intimidating.

Star and Dionne will be going back to the boardroom with Lisa, which we’ve seen brewing since about half way through the episode.

Lisa says that she won’t fight dirty, and she’s not used to this kind of negative energy. She realizes they want her fired.

It’s pretty obvious how this is unfolding. Whether Star and Dionne screwed up and were overbearing throughout, Lisa’s lack of fight is going to be her undoing. That said, Lisa has been fired.

The Amazing Race 18 Episode 4

Mike quit and blamed his dad in The Amazing Race 18 Episode 3, leading to the all too obvious elimination of Mel & Mike.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Zev & Justin – 8:44PM
Second: Gary & Mallory – 9:29PM
Third: Ron & Christina – 9:38PM
Fourth: Kisha & Jen – 9:50PM
Fifth: Flight Time & Big Easy – 10:01PM
Sixth: Jet & Cord – 10:34PM
Seventh: Kent & Vyxsin – 11:33PM
Eighth: Margie & Luke – 11:52PM
Ninth: Jaime & Cara – 12:42AM

Teams must now travel 2700 miles to Lijiang, China and make their way to Jade Dragon Mountain. Due to limited availability, all teams will get on the same flight from Tokyo to Kunming, China, and from there they will make arrangements to get to their destination.

Ron & Christina have both been to Lijiang, and they speak Chinese. Last time they were in China, Jen called Luke a bitch. Jaime was in a miserable mood last time they went to China, although I couldn’t tell the difference between that and her normal miserable mood.

Kent & Vyxsin are already arguing just to find their car and get it open. She continues to crumble as they look for the airport. Seeing as the flight is not until 9:50AM, that gives them about 10 hours from their departure to find it. After the sun rises, she realizes they have been going the wrong way. The other eight teams are boarding, wondering where the heck Kent & Vyxsin are, since they had enough time to walk there if they needed to. With the “required” flight having already taken off, they are left having to board the “alternate” one at 3:30PM. The first flight lands at 7:17PM; the second flight lands at 1:35AM.

They have the option of plane or train. The flight leaves at 7AM. Trains leave at 8:50 or 10:16, and everybody opts for that. By the time they arrive, Kent & Vyxsin are left with no option other than taking the plane. They just need to find Vyxsin’s passport first.

First Train (departs at 8:50PM): Ron & Christina
Second Train (departs at 10:16PM): Zev & Justin, Gary & Mallory, Kisha & Jen, Flight Time & Big Easy, Jet & Cord, Margie & Luke, Jaime & Cara
Flight (departs at 7AM, arrives at 8:15AM): Kent & Vyxsin

Bus transfers begin at 8AM, which puts the people who took trains on even footing. Kent & Vyxsin are not too far behind.

Their task on the mountain is to saddle a yak and ride it across the river. From there, they will ride a gondola even higher up the mountain to Spruce Meadow. This takes them from 10,000 feet up to 14,783 feet up, making even remotely physical tasks difficult.

The road block is to search among thousands of zodiac charms for the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Once they find all the animals, they must put them in the correct order.

Road block (in order of arrival): Luke, Cord, Jaime, Mallory, Big Easy, Jen, Zev, Christina, Vyxsin

Luckily for her, Christina knows all the animals, in both English and Chinese. Other teams are not so lucky. Cord is left making chicken clucking noises. As for Big Easy, he’s asking the local livestock whether they have seen anything.

As Jet & Cord make their way back down the mountain, they see Kent & Vyxsin for the first time in 2 days. This is particularly bad news for Zev & Justin, as Zev struggles to complete the road block. Justin realizes that they did not take the flight that they were supposed to take, and there’s a question of whether there’s some penalty for not taking a mandatory flight. After much struggle, Zev finally realizes a goat is not a small horse. Meanwhile, Vyxsin continues to struggle, as she has since the pit start. A crying Vyxsin has no clue what’s going on. They had a chance to catch up, but if she’s going to waste time having a breakdown, they may as well just quit.

Marked buses will take them to Old Town Lijiang. Ron & Christina view this as a direction to just get on the first motor vehicle they see. When they do realize they’re not on a bus, they have to turn around. After Ron has one of his meltdowns, they manage to get the bus to stop and let them on, as Flight Time & Big Easy tell the driver to stop. This hardly seems like it’s not a rule violation, taking something other than a bus part of the way.

Each teammate will have to locate their sign and make a wish to receive their next clue. This leads to amusing comments like “I am a snake.” Flight Time’s wish is he knew what his zodiac sign was, so he just tries them all.

The detour is a choice between hammer or horn. In hammer, teams must pulverize and prepare candy using hammers. In horn, teams must lead a procession of dancers to the palace while carrying a long horn.

Hammer: Margie & Luke, Gary & Mallory, Ron & Christina, Jet & Cord, Kisha & Jen, Jaime & Cara
Horn: Flight Time & Big Easy, Zev & Justin

Christina is left having to babysit her father. He wants to stop to eat, and he wants to take the tram. If she says no enough, maybe he’ll focus on the task at hand. Or maybe he’ll stop to snack on the candy, all the while serving as a distraction to her.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is the Eternal Tower, rising high above the old town.

First: Margie & Luke (win a trip to Aruba)
Second: Jet & Cord
Third: Gary & Mallory
Fourth: Ron & Christina
Fifth: Kisha & Jen
Sixth: Flight Time & Big Easy
Seventh: Jaime & Cara
Eighth: Zev & Justin
Ninth: Kent & Vyxsin

Once again, the leg isn’t over. They’re still racing. This is lucky for Kent & Vyxsin. Not only did they have a disastrous leg, but adding insult to injury, they lost their fanny pack on the gondola. Most importantly, it contains their passports. We leave with Vyxsin begging their driver to stop and turn around… and being ignored.

American Idol Season 10 Episode 17

The top 13 performed in American Idol Season 10 Episode 16. Tonight one person will be voted out after an hour of filler.

Casey is sick and hospitalized now and unable to appear on tonight’s show. They provide no indication of how serious it is and whether he’ll be recovered in time for next week’s show.

Jacob Lusk, Karen Rodriguez, and Stefano Langone are first. Jacob and Stefano are safe. Karen is in the bottom three.

Lauren Alaina, Ashton (or is it Ashthon?) Jones, and Haley Reinhart are the next group. Lauren is safe. Both of the other two could easily go. And both are in the bottom three. Somehow, Paul has gotten the votes to be safe.

Karen is the first to return to safety. Haley is also safe, and thus Ashton has been eliminated unless the judges save her (they won’t… she already got a second chance).

Survivor: Redemption Island Episode 4

With his tribe so willing to get rid of him just for the sake of getting rid of him that they threw the challenge, Russell (not to be confused with Ressell) was voted off the island for the first time in Survivor: Redemption Island Episode 3.

Phillip says he’s a little frustrated because his tribemates don’t understand him, not knowing whether he’s a criminal or a school teacher. The rest of the country is on the same page as them.

Stephanie and Krista are sitting ducks now that Russell’s gone. Wanting to convince his tribe he’s got it under control, Ralph shows them the idol. Every single one of them is convinced they have the idol, too.

Phil gets and reads treemail. It’s an invite to Redemption Island. He’d like to go. How about you, Kristina, would you like to go? Ralph and Sarita will also be going, anxious to witness Russell’s elimination.

Matt is standing in the way of Russell’s reentry into the game. He still believes that God cares about the outcome of Survivor. For today’s duel, they will stack a series of blocks on a multilevel platform while avoiding trip wires. The goal is to arrange the blocks so they will fall like dominos and release a ball. Matt is the first to get to the end and give it a try. He falls short and must restack half of his line. Russell tries, and he falls short. Matt tries again to win the duel, and a seemingly emotional Russell is officially out of the game, barring some unforeseen twist. All four people watching this unfold are thrilled.

Ralph’s so confident he’s willing to reveal to Russell and, in turn, Kristina and Phillip, that he has the idol. Russell spills the rest of the tribe’s secrets, hoping to remain in the game through these witnesses. This combined with the fact that they were dumb enough to give Boston Rob momentum may well be enough to shift the tide.

While Phillip and Kristina are off on Redemption, Rob decides now would be a good time to search for the hidden idol. He creates a game hoping to try to get everyone else away from him. Then he takes them to the beach and pretends to be constipated so he can run back to camp and look. The awesome clue that he has told him the idol is somewhere on the island. After about 15 minutes of climbing trees, he finds the idol.

Phillip wants to take control when he returns to camp. His pitch to Kristina is that this will move her from the next one out to maybe the fourth. His plan is to withhold the names until merge. Her plan is to sit back and let him dig his own grave. He tells the others Russell had a meltdown but not much else. Those details will be saved for Rob. Once he gets a guarantee that Kristina will be safe, Phillip tells Rob everything, including names. So much for leverage. And why is he so worried about protecting Kristina?

On day one, both tribes were given a Craftsman tool kit. Today’s challenge will be to test their ability to use those tools. They will go over a balance beam, use a crowbar to open a crate to retrieve a shovel, dig to find an axe, chop through a rope to release two saws, saw through a wall to create planks, use the planks to create a ramp, and untie a hammer to hit three nails and break three tiles. Reward is a BBQ set, with everything they need, including the food. Krista sits out for Zapatera. Ralph is the first to open the crate ahead of Rob. Grant makes up ground against Julie while digging. Ralph retains and extends his lead on the log chopping. Mike and Steve get their planks done well ahead of Phillip and Grant. Stephanie and Sarita finish their planks still with a good lead over Rob and Kristina. Stephanie releases the hammer first to win reward and immunity for Zapatera.

When they return to camp, Phillip takes the opportunity to make a speech that nobody wants to hear.

Kristina’s hope since she dug her own grave is that Phillip dug his quicker. Natalie thinks Kristina is acting weird with her small talk about the idol and the reward clue. Rob’s plan is a 3-2 split vote to get rid of Kristina, with the hopes that everybody stays in line, if for no other reason than that it means he’s in control. He tells Phil they’re going to get rid of Kristina, a sign to him that his earlier agreement to keep her was a lie.

By a vote of 4-3, Kristina has been voted off the island. She played hard way too early, without it making sense to do so.

The Biggest Loser Season 11 Episode 10

After placing last in the challenge in The Biggest Loser Season 11 Episode 9, Arthur found himself having to swap teams, becoming the sacrificial lamb when his new team lost the weigh in.

The teams are asked to pick captains to lead them this week. These captains will have to inspire them, lead them, and make a lot of important decisions, sometimes on their own. Justin will lead the red team; Marci will lead the black team.

Only one person from each team can be in the kitchen. Olivia will cook for the black team; Ken will cook for the red team. The drawback to this is that they have to cater to their teams’ nutritional needs, which is going to be critical to the weigh in, even if it takes away from their own time to be able to head to the gym.

Only two people can workout with the trainers that first day. Sarah and Hannah are picked for the black team, which Hannah takes offense to and gets an attitude about. Ken and Kaylee workout for the red team.

Sarah’s car accident, which led to her having the highest body fat percentage of anyone in the show, is all news to Bob. Her workout leads to vomiting, not usually something we see two months into the season.

Hannah finally accepts the fact that she can sprint on the treadmill, and it won’t kill her.

Kaylee’s rough time at home shows that, regardless of her performance thus far, she still hasn’t learned what she needs to learn to keep the weight off when she goes home for good. That said, her dad struggled, too, an indication that the environment is not a healthy one.

The challenge is to race on Step 360s across a field and through obstacles without touching the ground. In a balance oriented challenge, the all female team not only has a shot but perhaps an advantage. The winning team will share $6,000. Justin and Marci will determine where their teams line up. Two people start with them at the beginning, and they will then be joined by one teammate at 30 yards, 50 yards, and 70 yards. Marci sits her daughter out of the competition, which upsets Courtney, who was looking forward to participating in the challenge. Justin, Austin, and Kaylee start off, and they will pick up Rulon, Moses, and then Ken. Marci starts with Olivia and Jen, and they will pick up Hannah, Sarah, and Irene.

Red team is the first to make their way to the 30 yard mark. They’re also the first to the 50 yard mark, where they pick up Moses, whose foot touches the ground. That will send them back to the start of the last obstacle. This allows the black team to be the first to get to the 70 yard mark, but as they struggle to get there, their lead disappears. Red team’s about to overtake the black team, but this time Ken touches the mud, sending them back again. Black team wins the challenge.

At the weigh in, the red team goes first.

Justin: 254 pounds (-8, 3.05%)
Rulon: 342 pounds (-8, 2.29%)
Moses: 309 pounds (-8, 2.52%)
Kaylee: 174 pounds (-5, 2.79%)
Austin: 283 pounds (-6, 2.08%)
Ken: 277 pounds (-9, 3.15%)
Red Total: 1639 pounds (-44, 2.61%)

Following a lackluster at home performance, the red team returns with decent numbers.

Marci: 162 pounds (-5, 2.99%)
Courtney: 241 pounds (-5, 2.03%)
Irene: 180 pounds (-5, 2.70%)
Sarah: 190 pounds (-4, 2.06%)
Olivia: 188 pounds (-2, 1.05%)
Hannah: 180 pounds (-2, 1.10%)
Jen: 196 pounds (-1, 0.51%)
Black Total: 1337 pounds (-24, 1.76%)

The black team has lost the weigh in. Marci wants to sacrifice herself for the team. This time, it would actually make sense, unlike the last time when the black team parents sacrificed themselves and in the process just made the road far more difficult for their entire team. Ah, but there’s a problem. They cannot vote out this week’s Biggest Loser from their team. That would be Marci.

On the list of people who are ready to leave, Sarah’s probably near the bottom, but she became what Arthur intended weeks ago when he made the swap: the sacrificial lamb. At least she went out on a strong note, having seemed to hit her turning point this week with Bob. From her starting weight of 261 pounds, she’s now down 92 pounds to 169.

The Celebrity Apprentice 4 Episode 1

NBC made the ill-fated decision in the fall to bring back regular The Apprentice, which flopped pretty badly, but perhaps they can do better with the celebrity version and a group of has beens (or never weres), who conceivably some people may have heard of.

The women: Hope Dworaczyk, La Toya Jackson, Star Jones, NeNe Leakes, Marlee Matlin, Lisa Rinna, Niki Taylor and Dionne Warwick.
The men: Gary Busey, Jose Canseco, David Cassidy, Richard Hatch, Lil Jon, Meat Loaf, Mark McGrath and John Rich.

The women name their team ASAP: Actors, Singers, Authors, and Professionals for a Purpose. If you have to explain it, it’s not good. After enough people volunteer Star Jones to be the project manager, she agrees.

The men name themselves Backbone. Could be worse. They nominate Richard Hatch to be their leader, aware he’s always thinking.

When asked to explain her team name, La Toya gets it wrong. Repeatedly.

Each team will run a pizzeria. Trump has two locations on offer. The women would like to go with the theater district, while the men will go with the college area.

Hatch realizes that this isn’t about location. It’s about who you can bring in. Jose Canseco says he doesn’t know anybody in New York, and since he’s called out baseball players for using steroids, he can’t call the Yankees either. If he’s going to be this useless in fundraising tasks, what purpose is he serving?

Jose is not alone in thinking Hatch is difficult. David is getting snapped at and told to be quiet.

While her team is back in the kitchen, Star is out front. They question why it’s taking her so long. Lisa doesn’t think she likes to get her hands dirty. She’s got people for that. The men have a similar problem with their project manager.

Hatch has decided to limit deliveries to large donors only.

David Cassidy seems a little overly sensitive to what he deems Richard Hatch’s inappropriately pushing him.

Dionne Warwick is on the cash register. That technology is apparently a little too advanced for her.

Hatch is calling up his Apprentice and Survivor buddies, including Ethan Zohn, who founded the charity he’s playing for. John Rich manages to get someone in there to buy a slice of pizza for $15,000. Seeing Meat Loaf and Lil John also getting donations, David gets worried he’s going to be seen as not having contributed.

Curtis Stone has come down to taste the pizzas. Whoever makes the best pizza will win an extra $35,000.

Unlike the men, who reserved delivery for big donors, the women end up on a $300 delivery run. Star’s next delivery order, $40,000 worth, makes a lot more sense. After that, they get a call from Curtis telling them Niki’s pizzas have won the taste test and have to deliver 8 pizzas to the fire station to get their prize.

Feeling she can’t serve the line and deliver the 40 pizzas for $1,000 each, Star decides to close the doors with 2 hours remaining.

NeNe asks if maybe the large donor would accept 20 pizzas instead of 40. Star calls and is told they just need to make 1. Now they just have to wait for the women with the delivery van, who are stuck in traffic over the $300 delivery order.

They return in time to deliver the $40,000 pizza. With 25 minutes left, they’re cutting it close to make that fire station delivery, which they have no idea how much it will pay. In the end, they can’t make it to the fire house. Lisa’s intuition tells her she’s going to be blamed for this.

With minutes remaining, David finally manages to get a small donation from his daughter Katie.

As the women are arguing whether it was Star’s or Lisa’s fault that they missed that last delivery, Gary’s cell phone goes off.

Jose says that Richard is lucky he’s gotten this team he’s gotten. He feels Hatch is a bully, and he wants to defend the underdog.

Meat Loaf likes Richard, but he was short with everyone.

The men raised $54,104. The women raised $115,268, more than double. As the winning project manager, Star will get this money for her charity, the American Heart Association. Trump asks who the star was, and Star says chef Niki, so the $35,000 will be going to the American Red Cross.

Gary would fire Richard. John would as well. Mr. Loaf would, too.

David and Jose will be coming back into the boardroom with Richard. Jose didn’t raise anything. David raised very little. He would fired David over Jose.

Don Jr. points out that he sees that Richard wants to be there, but he’s really not getting that from David.

When David does finally start talking, he just paints himself into a corner. Since he doesn’t have the same passion as the other two, David Cassidy is fired.

The Amazing Race 18 Episode 3

Unable to overcome the stupid twist of a U-turn handed out within the first half hour of the game, Amanda & Kris were eliminated in The Amazing Race 18 Episode 2.

All teams are headed on an overnight train ride to Sydney, and from there they will depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Zev & Justin – 11:57AM
Second: Flight Time & Big Easy – 12:05PM
Third: Jet & Cord – 12:08PM
Fourth: Kisha & Jen – 12:09PM
Fifth: Margie & Luke – 12:10PM
Sixth: Mel & Mike – 12:14PM
Seventh: Kent & Vyxsin – 12:16PM
Eighth: Jaime & Cara – 12:24PM
Ninth: Gary & Mallory – 12:26PM
Tenth: Ron & Christina – 12:28PM

Teams must now fly nearly 5000 miles to Tokyo, Japan. There is a direct flight and also another flight with a 3 hour layover that gets in 15 minutes earlier. It’s only 15 minutes, so it becomes a question of how much risk they are willing to take for this relatively small reward. As the last ones to decide to go for it, Zev & Justin and the Globetrotters go to find out there’s only two seats left. The Globetrotters bow out since they owe them one, but they didn’t really like the connection anyway.

First Flight: Jaime & Cara, Kent & Vyxsin, Mel & Mike, Margie & Luke, Zev & Justin
Second Flight: Flight Time & Big Easy, Jet & Cord, Kisha & Jen, Gary & Mallory, Ron & Christina

Upon landing in Hong Kong, the teams on the first flight receive an apology for the delay due to engine problems. They do not end up landing in Tokyo until 7:20.

After getting their cars from a funky Japanese car garage, they will be headed to the city of Kamakura and the Yabusame Dojo.

Nobody knows where to go. Ron’s still as thoroughly grumpy as he was before. Seriously, why were they not eliminated last week? Meanwhile, Jaime & Cara have the trick of figuring out how to drive without bashing into anything. Not realizing that they’re in a race for last place, the lot of the last place teams decide to form a caravan, with the exception of Justin & Zev. Breaking away from the pack, Zev & Justin find themselves at the road block ahead of Jet & Cord, who are hopelessly lost. Mel & Mike eventually decide to ditch the other teams and instead work with just Margie & Luke.

The road block is to perform a yabusame ritual with the proper form and hit a target with a bow and arrow while on a wooden horse.

We see all the other teams arrive at the road block. Even the cowboys finally arrive. Jaime & Cara are nowhere to be seen. There’s a reason for that. As Cara’s warning Jaime that she is driving awfully close to the other side and needs to be careful, they run into something, hitting a guy’s mirror. They offer to give him some money, but he wants a cop involved, so they’re going to end up way behind everyone else. To their surprise, they find out there are still others at the road block.

Road block (in order of arrival): Ron, Gary, Flight Time, Jen, Justin, Kent, Mike, Luke, Cord, Cara

From there, teams must locate the kintaro statue in downtown Minami-ashigara. The detour is a choice between prayer of purity, teams take part in a shinto religious cleansing ritual, learning a prayer that is both vocal and physical, then stand under the 45 degree cascading waterfall for 1 minute. In frog of luck, teams strip down and get in a mud pit, where they will search for a buried frog while being pelted with mud by onlookers. A searching task is bad enough, but doing it while having mud thrown at you just seems to be asking for trouble. As she’s leaving, Mallory promises the locals two red heads who are going to look good in these outfits.

Frog of luck: Zev & Justin, Gary & Mallory, Kisha & Jen, Margie & Luke, Kent & Vyxsin, Mel & Mike, Jaime & Cara
Prayer of Purity: Flight Time & Big Easy, Ron & Christina

The first few teams seem to go okay, but the frog detour proves progressively more difficult as time goes by. By the time Jaime & Cara arrive, Mel & Mike are in the medic area trying to warm up. Although he says he gave up for his dad, Mike doesn’t seem to be doing so well himself.

Following the detour, Christina returns to find her fanny pack is missing. This contains all their money and passports. The Globetrotters took it, realized their mistake, but did not end up returning it to its original location. When they explain this to Phil, the Globetrotters receive a 30 minute penalty, bumping them down two spots.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Commodore Perry’s Landing.

First: Zev & Justin (win a trip to Costa Rica)
Second: Gary & Mallory
Third: Ron & Christina
Fourth: Kisha & Jen
Fifth: Flight Time & Big Easy
Sixth: Jet & Cord
Seventh: Kent & Vyxsin
Eighth: Margie & Luke
Ninth: Jaime & Cara
Eliminated: Mel & Mike

With Jaime & Cara getting the luckiest break they can hope for, Mel & Mike have been eliminated. This elimination was only a matter of time, as Mel & Mike have been struggling from the beginning.
