The Biggest Loser Families Episode 6

Following Ed and Heba’s last place finish in The Biggest Loser Families Episode 5, Ed went home.

They can smell baked goods from a mile away and know they’re in for a temptation. One person will get the control to choose teams. Whoever has eaten the most calories wins the right to pick the teams. The lights go out, and now it’s time to eat in the dark. Heba speaks up and tries to take control of the challenge, wanting to keep the teams the same. Amy C and Shellay, however, disagree and speak up about it. Phil also disagrees and proceeds to chow down in silence. His peanutbutter cup eating doesn’t go unnoticed by Heba, and as much as he wants to answer her accusations, he can’t since you can’t talk with peanutbutter in your mouth unless you’re a horse.

The three contenders for the challenge are Amy C, Phil, and Heba. Phil ate two peanutbutter cups for 210 calories. Amy ate a brownie, which is 340 calories. The most was Heba with two donuts, which is 400 calories, and she wins the challenge and is able to choose the teams. She ain’t happy with Phil’s efforts during the challenge.

Jillian’s black team: Renee, Coleen, Michelle, Phil, Shellay
Bob’s blue team: Heba, Vicky, Amy P, Amy C, Brady

Heba assures us that, even though it may seem personal, which it is, her putting Phil and his wife on different teams is just gameplay. She has also split up Amy C and Shellay, while keeping her allies Vicky and Brady together and on her side.

Bob warns Heba that her decision to get rid of Phil was stupid and will backfire because it’s not smart decision making in this house.

As the sun is rising, Alison wakes everybody up and tells them the challenge will begin in 10 minutes. This challenge, 14 hours long, will last from sun up to sun down and is the longest challenge in the show’s history. They have the whole day to climb the mountain as many times as they can. There is some degree of insanity to this. At the top and bottom of each run, they’ll take their picture. Every person in the picture is worth a point, and all 5 is worth a bonus point. The winning team will get a 2 pound pass. Black team’s strategy is to just stay together and keep getting the bonus points. Blue decides that Vicky is weighing them down, so they split up and let Brady go on his own as well to try to make up for the lost bonus points. The temperature rises to triple digits before long.

Around 1PM, the teams call a truce for a couple hours to rest. Shellay and Coleen don’t trust the truce. They’re not sure that the other team has really stopped, and they feel guilty for not being out there continuing. Coleen doesn’t want to burn her bridges too quickly, so they decide against breaking the truce, which lasts for about three and a half hours. Their combined total was over 160 miles, and they ended up within 1 mile of each other. With 162 points, the black team’s game of working together as a team was the winning effort. Brady, as an individual, ran the furthest, over 20 miles. Blue team scored 147 points.

Michelle apparently feels like she’s betraying her father by being there with her mother. Jillian has her call her father for some inspiration to stick around and to get his okay. When they get to the weigh-in, Alison confirms with her that she’s still willing to be there, and she says that she is ready to be there and wants to stay. I guess all this silly drama at least made for good TV.

Michelle: 209 pounds (-7)
Renee: 232 pounds (-5)
Phil: 279 pounds (-8)
Coleen: 187 pounds (-5)
Shellay: 189 pounds (-5)
Total: -30 pounds, 2.66%, minus 2 pounds = 2.84%

Amy C: 199 pounds (-9)
Vicky: 211 pounds (-6)
Brady: 286 pounds (-6)
Amy P: 193 pounds (-6)
Heba: 258 pounds (-8)
Total: -35 pounds, 2.96%

The black team loses the weigh-in. Michelle is the biggest loser for her team and is safe, but the rest of the team is at risk. They have three pretty logical choices to choose from here, none of which are Phil. However, he is the new guy, so they may want to get rid of him on that basis.

Votes
Michelle: Shellay
Phil: Renee
Renee: Shellay
Shellay: Renee
Coleen: Shellay

Would have made more sense to split up the mother/daughter team, but ultimately Shellay has been voted out. Shellay is down 8 dress sizes from where she began at the start of the season.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 5

With the Presidential debate on last night, we only got half way through the week, so tonight we get a special dose of The Biggest Loser. Following her contestants being lazy, Jillian threw Amy C out of the gym in The Biggest Loser Families Episode 4, and that’s where we pick back up tonight.

Much ado about nothing. Amy feels bad, comes back, and says she’s learned her lesson.

During the commercial for Subway, Bob has a small but useful tip: when you go somewhere, park in the furthest spot away so you get the exercise.

Michelle is struggling because she blames her mother for making her gain weight. The problem with her theory is that her emotional eating is based on her making her own choices. Jillian lets her know she’s gotta make the right choice.

Bob’s team is feeling pretty confident heading into the weigh in because they’ve noticed the lack of effort on the other side. As with last week, only one family will fall below the yellow line.

Coleen: 192 pounds (-3, 1.54%)

Michelle: 216 (-4)
Renee: 237 (-5)
Total: 453 pounds (-9, 1.95%)

Amy: 208 (-5)
Shellay: 194 (-4)
Total: 402 pounds (-9, 2.19%)

Amy: 199 (-5)
Phil: 287 (-3)
Total: 486 pounds (-8, 1.62%)

Heba: 266 (-8)
Ed: 299 (no change)
Total: 565 pounds (-8, 1.40%)

Vicky: 217 (-3)
Brady: 292 (-9)
Total: 509 pounds (-12, 2.30%)

Heba has the best week of anyone other than Brady, but it’s not enough to make up for Ed’s off week. Vicky and Brady are noticeably upset because they are close friends with Heba and Ed. Based on their discussion, it looks like Ed will be the one heading home. He blames himself for being below the yellow line, but more important is that he wants to see his wife able to have children and promises her that if he goes home he’ll be dedicated enough to stick to the program.

The decision is in. Ed and Heba have decided to send Ed home. Ed is down from his starting weight of 335 pounds to 250 pounds today.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 4

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 3 took an unexpectedly harsh turn. Only one team ended up below the yellow line. Coleen and Jerry had to decide between them who should go home, and they chose Jerry because he needed time to recover from an injury and also wanted to make sure that his daughter didn’t go down the same path of bad health he has.

Everybody acts surprised by the teams splitting apart. As if they didn’t watch last season.

Vicky’s struggling with injuries and hopes to work around that. She’s unable to run because of her knees, so Bob suggests that she just walk at a high incline. She’s also struggling with her husband. Vicky confronts Brady because she believes he’s holding her back. He doesn’t appear to realize he’s doing anything wrong, but he agrees to cooperate.

Phil and Amy won a visit home the first week, which I thought was silly considering they’d only been at the ranch a day, but now it makes a bit more sense. Now that it’s been about a month, they are getting the chance to use that visit home to see their children.

Amy and Shellay are also cashing in their prize from the first challenge. They get 24 hours alone with Jillian (to go to the gym, of course). Jillian very quickly loses patience with Shellay, although Amy seems to be doing fine. Coleen and pink aren’t too happy being left on their own for a day, as it may not bode well for them at the weigh in.

The challenge looks like an endurance challenge. They see chains and water. They’ll need to hold on for as long as they can. As the water is drained out of the tank, it will be more difficult to hang on. Very simple challenge to put together, but an interesting twist on the hanging on endurance challenge. Reward is a care package from home and a 3 day pass to Universal Studios Hollywood. Renee is the first person to drop at 40 minutes. Coleen is the next one out. Heba’s out around 50 minutes. Michelle drops at 58 minutes as she realizes she’s not going to win. Ed’s out at 83 minutes. Around an hour and a half, they have to pick one arm. Shellay is eliminated after using her other arm. Amy P falls, followed closely by Phil. It’s brown against Amy C. Brady’s the next one to fall. After more than 105 minutes, Amy falls, and Vicky wins the challenge. They agree to give a care package to second place Amy and Shellay.

Jillian’s women didn’t bother doing their homework (extra cardio on their own). None of them seem to care. She wants to know what’s going on with them, particularly compared to people like Ali and Brittany from last year. She begins screaming at them and telling them they don’t have what it takes. Amy C finds this all very amusing, but the rest of them seem to be getting the hint.

Because of the Presidential debate, that’s it for tonight, but there’s a special episode on tomorrow.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another recap of The Biggest Loser Families episode 5, which airs Wednesday at 9/8c on NBC.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 3

Despite Jerry & Coleen’s overconfidence and subsequent putting themselves below the yellow line, Tom & LT were sent packing in The Biggest Loser Families Episode 2.

Everybody’s going on a trip to the Grand Canyon. Everybody’s skeptical that there’s going to be a catch. When they arrive, they find out they will be camping, though two of them will be camping inside.

They first go to a convenience store. It’s a temptation. The winning family that wins three packs of the sponsor’s gum will stay in an RV. If they get the closest to the correct amount of calories, they will get a pack of gum. If they aren’t closest, they’ll have to eat the snack.

Pink, purple, orange, and red are in to guess a chocolate covered caramel. There are 26 calories, and Ed & Heba come closest. Because they won the last round, orange must continue. Pink, purple, and red are in again. Next up is string cheese. It’s 80 calories, and Ed & Heba are again right, winning their second pack of gum. No takers since orange already has this locked up, so the others bow out and let them have it. It’s a hot dog on a bun. It’s 240 calories, and Ed & Heba lowball the answer so that they win. They will be getting the RV.

Nobody’s impressed with the workout facilities at the campsite, and they’re not trying very hard to improvise either. Much better to just sit around and do nothing.

At least there’s a challenge. One family member paddles in a kayak. After 90 seconds, the other family member must pull the ropes of their opponents’ kayaks back. The reward if they win will be their very own RV. Shellay makes the mistake of believing she can just throw the rope into the water all at once, which obviously creates knots. The order of teams (furthest first) ends up as: orange, red, yellow, brown, pink, purple. Pink is the first one pulled back. Purple was clearly going to be pulled back as well. Brown and yellow are next. It’s between red and orange, the two that got the furthest out. Red ends up losing, and Ed & Heba win the challenge, an indication that them being the only team to put a guy in the boat may have been a wise idea.

Ed & Heba plan to dominate the competition. While that’s good if it works, one bad week, and they’re gone because they’re a threat.

Jillian thinks she’s being Punk’d when they tell her about the trip. Maybe she’ll get to meet Ashton. She wants to show them how to cook in advance for the week so that they’re always ready. As for the lack of exercise, she’ll have to punish them for that later.

Both Jillian and Bob use their last chance workout as a lesson: they don’t need a gym to get a good workout. They could have easily not been lazy and made an effort at the canyon.

Jerry’s been having trouble with his leg, but he’s been trying to not complain. Jillian sees him limping and sends him to the medic. He has to go to the hospital on the medical staff’s advice, as he may have an infection or blood clot. It turns out that he does not have a blood clot, but he does have a torn hamstring.

Jillian’s beating up Michelle because she wants to convince her that she has to speak up and let her voice be heard. She wants her to be able to say things like “Stop hitting me, crazy person.”

Alison points out the obvious: Ed & Heba are making themselves targets. Then she’s got a surprise. Nobody will be voting. Only one family will fall below the yellow line. There’s more. Only one person from that team will be going home. As a family, they will decide which one stays and which one goes. Harsh.

Amy: 204 (-5)
Phil: 290 (-10)
Total: 494 pounds (-15, 2.95%)

Vicky: 220 (-3)
Brady: 301 (-5)
Total: 521 pounds (-8, 1.51%)

Michelle: 220 (-3)
Renee: 242 (-6)
Total: 462 pounds (-9, 1.91%)

Heba: 274 (-6)
Ed: 299 (-10)
Total: 573 pounds (-16, 2.72%)

Amy: 213 (-6)
Shellay: 198 (-3)
Total: 411 pounds (-9, 2.14%)

Coleen: 195 (-7)
Jerry: 360 (+2)
Total: 555 pounds (-5, 0.89%)

Coleen had an awesome week, but her father struggled with an injury and the camping trip. The question is whether he sticks around because he needs it more than most, or heads home to heal and then continues forward on his own. Since they are below the yellow line, they’ve gotta decide who should go home between the two of them.

The arguments presented are as expected. He doesn’t think he can put the full effort forward considering his injury, and he also wants to see his daughter make herself better so that she doesn’t end up as unhealthy as he is. She wants him to stay because she knows that he has a real health issue that needs to be addressed.

The other teams have nothing but positive things to say about Jerry & Coleen. In the end, they have decided to vote out Jerry.

Jerry has managed to eliminate his blood pressure medicine in three weeks, which he’s been on for 15 years. The doc is back to talk with him because he was so far gone when he began. He’s off most of his medicine, and his back and knees are better. Today, Jerry is down 70 pounds from his starting weight of 380.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 2

After Stacey & Adam and Ed & Heba fell below the yellow line, Stacey & Adam were voted out in The Biggest Loser Families Episode 1, although I couldn’t quite figure out why.

Ed and Heba tell LT they’ll save him if they have the chance since he used his extra vote in their favor.

Bob expects week two to suck since it usually does. Jillian is also hoping against hope that things go not horribly.

Jillian discusses the divorce with Michelle. She tells her that, for once in her life, she needs to put herself first.

Bob hates the yellow line down the middle of the gym, so he rips it up and throws it out.

Alison warns the teams that the average weight loss for the second week is 2%, way down from the 4-8% they put up last week. Because the week is so difficult, she wants to offer a reward. One team will win $10,000. But there is a catch. The highest bidder will win $10k if they achieve their goal. However, if someone fails to achieve their goal, they will instead automatically be below the yellow line.

Phil & Amy bid 1%, hoping to kickstart the auction. Tom & LT bid 1.1%, as LT’s just thinking about the money. Shellay & Amy bid 1.2%. Ed & Heba aren’t taking any chances and won’t bid. Phil & Amy go 1.3%. Coleen & Jerry bid 1.4%. Phil & Amy bid 1.5%. LT & Tom go 1.6%. Coleen & Jerry go 1.7%. LT’s back again with 1.8%. Shellay ups it again to 1.9%. LT hits 2.0%. Coleen bids 2.1%. Amy P tries egging on everybody else. Amy C stops her mom from going any higher. LT goes to 2.2%. Shellay bids 2.3% (apparently). Coleen goes 2.4%, praying someone else will outbid her. Nobody does, though, so either they lose more than 13 pounds and get $10,000, or they don’t and go below the yellow line, where I’d assume they’re safe regardless. Jillian thinks they’ve lost their minds.

The second challenge involves huge waterslides. They must slide and then run up the hill. If they are unable to complete the course within 2 minutes, they will be eliminated. The reward is a phone call home, still a bit silly considering it’s so early in the season. Once again, Tom and Jerry are sitting out, so Coleen and LT are on their own. The other teams will rotate on and off. Not sure whether this is an advantage for the solo people or not. It should certainly make the first couple laps easier for them, though.

Everybody returns in time on the first leg, except for Brady, who appears to have injured his knee. Vicky suggests he threw the challenge. Everybody also completes the second leg, except for Amy P, who got stuck on the slide on the way down. The clock for the next legs is down to 1:30. LT is the next one eliminated. On the fourth round, everybody is okay. The time remains the same, but they have less chance to rest. They’re all going strong round after round. Renee and Coleen are both finally eliminated. That leaves Shellay & Amy against Ed & Heba. Shellay’s ready to give up, but Amy wants her to at least try and finish. She’s eliminated by just seconds, so Ed & Heba win the challenge after 18 rounds. In addition to the phone call, they must pick one other team to get a call. They decide to give it to Amy & Phil so they can have a call home to their kids. Ed gives his 10 minutes to Heba so she can talk to her dad for twice the time.

Rocco Dispirito is back. He wants to show them how to cook healthy and inexpensively. He has the teams divide. The best cooks from the teams stand up. It’s a trick. The less good cooks will be the ones actually doing the shopping and cooking, while the others stay behind and wait to be served. The winner of this will get a year’s worth of groceries. At the store, Rocco hands out the recipes at random, then gives them guidance as to how to choose the best food. Amy C hopes to learn to boil water, among other things. Then it’s a group effort to turn on the oven. This is followed by a Ziploc commercial. Once the food’s all done, it’s time to bring it out to the tasters.

They must taste each dish and judge them all, without knowing who has cooked what. Vicky refuses to eat any part of anything that has cauliflower in it, but most others are up for the challenge. Amy C manages to win, despite the fact that she had no clue what she was doing.

It’s time for the second weigh-in.

Vicky: 223 (-4)
Brady: 306 (-7)
Total: 529 pounds (-11, 2.04%)

Amy: 219 (-3)
Shellay: 201 (-3)
Total: 420 pounds (-6, 1.41%)

Michelle: 223 (-2)
Renee: 248 (-5)
Total: 471 pounds (-7, 1.46%)

Despite the low weight loss, Michelle is in good spirits and proud of what she’s done.

Amy: 209 (-4)
Phil: 300 (-8)
Total: 509 pounds (-12, 2.30%)

Heba: 280 (-2)
Ed: 309 (-9)
Total: 589 pounds (-11, 1.83%)

All three of Bob’s teams are safe. They can decide the outcome of who goes or who stays.

LT: 342 (+3)
Tom: 287 (-3)
Total: 629 pounds (no change)

Coleen: 202 (-6)
Jerry: 358 (-5)
Total: 560 pounds (-11, 1.93%)

Dumb risk, and it didn’t pay off. Coleen put up some good numbers, though. With that, Coleen & Jerry are below the yellow line alongside LT & Tom. Whoever ends up going home, one of them will be among the ones that has to sit out each week for medical reasons. LT hopes orange will have his back after last week, and Heba considers Coleen a big threat to win anyway, so Ed says they are planning to vote her and Jerry out.

Votes
Shellay & Amy: Tom & LT
Ed & Heba: Tom & LT
Amy & Phil: Tom & LT

With three votes, Tom & LT are not The Biggest Loser. Alison tells the rest of them they’re going to pack their bags and head on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. Tom’s down from his 9 pills to none. LT has dropped 81 pounds, while his dad has dropped 65.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another recap of The Biggest Loser Families episode 3, which airs Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.

The Biggest Loser Families Episode 1

The Biggest Loser is back for season 6, and this time it’s all about families. Husbands, wives, mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons, all competing together to lose weight and get healthy (in between the product sponsorship). Check out the full The Biggest Loser Families cast.

Amy P says she used to be a normal weight, but since her son was diagnosed with autism, she’s done a lot of stress eating. She’s got a good chance since this hasn’t been a lifelong problem for her.

Tom and little Tom, however, have had a lifelong struggle with weight. Not only are they overweight, but so is the entire rest of their family.

Ed and Heba hope to have children, but they know they can’t do it like they are now.

Vicky and Brady are a fast food family, and they’re already spreading their bad habits to their 4-year-old daughter.

Mother/daughter Renee and Michelle have been estranged for six years. Oh no. I’ve seen this storyline before. Let’s hope it turns out better than the last time I saw it.

Coleen is afraid her father won’t be around to see her get married.

Oh, and all the wacky team colors are back. Not that they much mattered last time. Also back as usual are host Alison Sweeney and trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels.

Big Tom, at age 42, says he’s never been in a gym. He picked a good one to start at. The new gym is double the size because it’s divided down the middle. It’s parents and children on one side competing against husbands and wives.

Before they start working out, though, it’s time for the first weigh-in.

Michelle: 242 pounds
Renee: 267 pounds
Total: 509 pounds

Coleen: 218 pounds
Jerry: 380 pounds (heaviest man)
Total: 598 pounds

Amy: 239 pounds
Shellay: 216 pounds
Total: 455 pounds

Amy: 229 pounds
Phil: 331 pounds
Total: 560 pounds

Stacey: 221 pounds
Adam: 340 pounds
Total: 561 pounds

Vicky: 246 pounds
Brady: 341 pounds
Total: 587 pounds

Heba: 294 pounds (heaviest woman)
Ed: 335 pounds
Total: 629 pounds

LT: 357 pounds
Tom: 314 pounds
Total: 671 pounds (heaviest team)

Bob gets the husbands and wives, while Jillian gets the parents and children. Jillian warns them they doen’t want to freak her out, and she’s pissed off that she thinks she’s become the nice one. Jerry’s already in severe pain after 7-10 minutes on the treadmill, but he doesn’t quit until he falls off it. Amy C’s crying her eyes out within 5 minutes. Vicky fears she’ll be the weakest link on Bob’s side. Ed’s doing his share of whining, but Heba’s there to kick his butt.

After Jerry falls off the treadmill, Jillian has him get back up and start walking again because he hasn’t fainted, puked, or died. Jerry heads to meet with the doctor, who tells him he’s the sickest person in the history of The Biggest Loser. The doctor tells Jillian he’s only allowed to do 30 minutes of exercise a day.

The contestants arrive at the challenge in nice cool 110 degree weather. They’re probably going to have to climb that big hill. The rewards range from a visit home (uh, it’s been like… a day) to immunity. The bad news is that one of the rewards is a 2 pound penalty. They must grab the banner of their choice that’s been dropped by a crop duster. Jerry and Tom will not participate due to medical reasons, so LT and Coleen will represent their teams, which I’d argue is an unfair advantage.

Vicky’s trailing behind the pack, and this presents an opportunity for some drama. Eventually, she’s not alone, as some others end up struggling as well. Phil and Shellay particularly have difficulty.

Coleen: Immunity
Stacey & Adam: Luxury
Ed & Heba: $5,000
LT: Extra Vote
Michelle & Renee: Phone call home
Amy & Phil: Visit home
Shellay & Amy: Whatever it is, it’s not last
Brady & Vicky: 2 pound penalty

Next, everybody goes to the doctor for the bad news. Amy C is shown the fatty build up and smoking in her lungs. Her biological age is 47 based on her health issues, well above her actual age of 26. Michelle’s got the same build up around her heart, and her biological age is 41, not 26. Vicky has acid reflux, breathing issues, and thin bones. Her biological age is 48, compared to her chronological age of 37. Ed has a type of liver disease, pre-diabetes, and high blood pressure. LT is also a smoker, and his biological age is 49, more than double his age of 23. Jerry has nearly 200 pounds of hydrated fat in his body. His ability to exercise is roughly that of a 95 year old. His real age is 51; his internal age is 76. This biological age thing is a pretty good wake up call.

Adam and Stacey don’t seem like they have a care in the world during the last chance workout. Vicky’s unimpressed and says this pushes her to try harder. Amy C says she’s though of quitting.

The weigh-in to see how much they’ve lost in their first week is up next. The bottom two teams will be up for elimination.

Coleen: 208 (-10)
Jerry: 363 (-17)
Total: 571 pounds (-27, 4.51%)

Heba: 282 (-12)
Ed: 318 (-17)
Total: 600 pounds (-29, 4.61%)

Michelle: 225 (-17)
Renee: 253 (-14)
Total: 478 pounds (-31, 6.09%)

LT: 339 (-18)
Tom: 290 (-24)
Total: 629 pounds (-42, 6.26%)

Amy: 213 (-16)
Phil: 308 (-23)
Total: 521 pounds (-39, 6.96%)

Stacey: 212 (-9)
Adam: 321 (-19)
Total: 533 pounds (-28, 4.99%)

Amy: 222 (-17)
Shellay: 204 (-12)
Total: 426 pounds (-29, 6.37%)

Vicky: 227 (-19)
Brady: 313 (-28)
Total: 540 pounds (-47, +2, 7.67%)

I almost thought they would get through an entire weigh-in without a commercial break, but alas, it was not to be. Vicky & Brady make the most unlikely first place finishers. Ed & Heba and Stacey & Adam have fallen below the yellow line. Stacey blames herself and gets upset. Ed just gets angry, and he doesn’t want to talk to anyone even to plead his case. Coleen says she thinks both teams are hard working.

Votes
Brady & Vicky: Stacey & Adam
Amy & Phil: Stacey & Adam
LT & Tom: Stacey & Adam

I don’t get it. At 600 pounds, Heba and Ed are the second heaviest team, making them the bigger threat (Ed’s attitude looks like it has the potential to be problematic as well). Nonetheless, Stacey & Adam have been eliminated. Stacey is now down from her original weight of 221 pounds to 175 pounds. Adam is down from his original weight of 340 pounds to 286 pounds.
