NBC Heroes Recap – Episode 18: “Parasite”
March 5th, 2007 – Just as I thought it would be, tonight’s episode was a good one. Though not as action packed and mind blowing as episode 17, tonight’s episode definitely shed some light on different areas and the Heroes stories are all really starting to come together. Have I mentioned lately how much I love this show? If I have, it still hasn’t been enough. Heroes is, without a shadow of a doubt, the single best show on TV right now, and that really is something coming from a reality TV junky like me. The sad fact is that I’m a great deal more entertained by the creativity and innovation behind Heroes than I am that of any reality TV series. Reality TV is becoming stagnant with old and played out ideas and is in dire need of a serious change.
But enough of that nonsense. NBC Heroes episode 18 “Parasite” was chalk full of gooey awesomeness and bursting with tasty surprises, so lets get down to business. Find out what went down in episode 18, after the jump!
Things kicked off where episode 17 “Company Man” came to an end, with Isaac and Peter at Isaac’s studio, surrounding the freshly killed (by Isaac) corpse of his one time lover, Simone. Isaac, filled with a jealous rage and convinced that Simone’s death was Peter’s fault, chases him around the studio trying to shoot him, only for Peter to turn the invisible switch and disappear.
Hiro, fresh from his return to Vegas, tries to get past security in Linderman’s hotel in the hopes of getting his hands on the much sought after samurai sword. Only problem is, the two security guards are big, really big, and not very friendly. Hiro gets “escorted” (see also: thrown) out the door by one of the security guards and is left to think of a way to get around them.
Back in the safety of Primatech Papers, HRG is chatting with his bossman, telling him that he can’t remember a thing about what all went down and that all he wants is to get his daughter Claire back. HRG’s bossman tells him that the Haitian erased his memory of the events, though apparently the Haitian erased a whole lot more of HRG’s wife and sons memory. HRG tells his boss that he wants to track down Claire, but his Bossman isn’t having any of that. Claire is no longer part of HRG’s responsibility, the Boss is taking care of her retreival. The Boss then steps out of the room, behind a one way mirror, where Matt sits, trying to read HRG’s thoughts. Matt tells the Bossman that HRG is telling the truth. Matt apparently agreed to try and read HRG’s thoughts as part of a deal to be set free, but HRG’s Bossman walks off and doesn’t let him go.
The Haitian and Claire are on the road, though neither of them seems to know quite where they are headed, other than away from Primatech, Sylar and everyone else that may be out to get them. Claire is pissed that she has to leave behind everything she has ever known and the Haitian tries to explain to her just how much HRG had to sacrifice for them to go free. The two stop at a gas station and the Haitian gets out of the car to use a payphone, talking to someone in a foreign language before returning to the car, telling Claire they’re leaving the country that night.
Back in New York, Nathan is sitting in his office when the FBI decides to pay him a visit. They start to ask him about taking campaign contributions from Linderman until his assistant clears out, they check the room for bugs and get down to business. Nathan is actually working with the FBI to take down Linderman. The FBI agents want Nathan to wear a wire when he goes to Vegas to meet with Linderman and he agrees. The FBI agents take off and Nathan turns around to see Peter standing beside his desk. Peter asks him how long hes been working with the FBI, but Nathan notices the blood on Peter’s face and asks where it came from. Peter tells Nathan that its Simones blood and that she’s dead in Isaac’s studio. Nathan tells Peter that he’s going to call in an anonymous tip to the cops and that Peter should go see Mohinder and try to come up with a cure. Nathan then gets distracted by one of his assistants coming to the door, only to turn around and see that Peter took off.
HRG returns to his wife in the hotel where they are al staying while the “flood” damage gets taken care of back at the house. HRG’s wife takes him into the bathroom, turns on the radio and tells HRG that her memory wasn’t erased, she knows everything that HRG told her before he had his memory wiped and she hands HRG a note, written in his own hand writing, saying not to go looking for Claire. The couple have their conversation interrupted when a girl comes to the door of the hotel room and tells HRG that they have a new assignment for him, Isaac called for him and said Simone is dead.
Home from their road trip, Mohinder shows Sylar “the list”, tells him about the DNA testing and research his father has been doing and tells Sylar that his DNA won’t be any help. Sylar offers to help by calling one of the next Heroes and setting up to meet them. Sylar tries to call Isaac, but the line is busy. Mohinder gives Sylar a cup of tea and Sylar asks who they’re going to call next. Sylar starts to get dizzy and his vision goes blurry, as Mohinder tells him he’s the next hero they’re going after, he knows he’s really Sylar, not Zane! Mohinder spiked the tea and Sylar passed out!
Back in Vegas, Hiro has a chance encounter with “the flying man” Nathan, in Linderman’s hotel. Hiro talks to Nathan about trying to get the sword from Linderman’s office and that he can’t get passed security. Hiro asks Nathan to help him find a way past the security guards and he agrees to help. Nathan tells the security guards that Hiro is there to deliver something for Linderman and security agrees to let Hiro in to see the curator.
Claire and the Haitian enter the airport and the Haitian hooks Claire up with some fake documents under the name of Vivian. Claire wants to go hide out with Peter, but the Haitian tells her he’s not in the position to look after himself, let alone her. Claire goes through security before the Haitian and, as the Haitian is going through security, he realizes that Claire stole his passport and boarding pass. Security keeps the Haitian from getting past and Claire takes off.
Back at Isaacs studio, the cops pay a visit, looking for Simone, saying that neighbours called in complaining about a fight and gun shots. Then, out of no where, Simone comes walking in through the door behind the cops, alive and good as new. The cops turn around and leave and, as quickly as they left, HRG comes walking through the door. Simone isn’t actually Simone, it’s a new Heroes character that can shape shift! HRG’s new partner (I think her name is Missy Peregrym, but I don’t know for sure) has the fantastic ability to change forms! Changing into Simone was to get the cops to take off, so HRG could tell Isaac not to leave, to stick around and focus on painting.
In the Sanders house, Jessica and Mikah lay in bed and play videos games. Micah leaves for school and DL confronts Jessica, asking her what she’s doing with a picture of Nathan, that just happened to appear on his pillow, and why she’s going to Linderman’s casino. Jessica manages to convince DL, sorta at least, that she’s only going to Linderman’s casino to work as a dealer for. It was lame, but enough to get DL off her back for the time being. Jessica turns to look in the mirror and gives Niki credit for somehow getting Nathans picture on DL’s pillow.
Back in Mohinder’s apartment, Sylar is strapped up to an IV and drugged up. Mohinder has him on drugs that prevent him from being able to move, just for safetys sake. Mohinder pulls out a tuning fork, strikes it on the edge of a table and holds it to Sylar’s ear, yelling at him to admit that he killed his father. Sylar, having super hearing powers from killing and taking another Heroes powers in episode 16, couldn’t take it and admitted to killing Mohinders father. Mohinder pulls a gun on Sylar and Sylar starts to tell Mohinder how his father liked him better, how he confided in him, how he told him everything and how he felt about Mohinder. Mohinder puts the gun down, and instead of shooting Sylar, picks up a big nasty syringe and jabs it into Sylar’s spine, extracting some spinal fluids for testing.
Back in Vegas, Hiro steps off the elevator and enters Linderman’s art collection. Hiro delivers one of Isaacs paintings to the currator and asks him to go get the delivery papers. While the curator is gone, Hiro jumps onto his computer, searches for the samurai sword and one of the many drawers full of art pieces pops open, revealing Hiro’s coveted samurai sword. Hiro rolls a ladder over to take the sword, climbs to the top and is caught by the curator, who triggers the alarm. One of the security guards shows up and knocks the curator out. It’s Ando! He stuck around and got a job as a security guard in Linderman’s casino because he knew that Hiro would need his help one day.
In another part of the casino, Nathan tells his FBI friends, via his hidden wire, that Linderman has agreed to see him in an hour and he’s going to wait in his hotel room. The FBI agents then get a special visit from Jessica, who breaks into their room, gets them to drop their guns and kills them.
Back in Mohinders apartment, Sylar’s spinal fluid have proved to be very uselful and have revealed to Mohinder the four key genes needed to fix everything. Mohinder pulls a gun on Sylar yet again, only this time he shoots, but things don’t go according to plan. Sylar stops the bullet mid-air using his powers and tells Mohinder that he used his powers earlier to shut off the IV that was pumping him full of drugs to prevent him from moving. Sylar breaks free of his restraints and goes after Mohinder, only to tell him that he’s not going to kill him just yet, he wants the list first.
Isaac tears apart his studio, going through all his paintings, paints, books, everything, until he uncovers what he’s looking for, a stash of drugs. Isaac shoots up, his eyes turn white and he begins to paint a new picture. When all is said and done and Isaac comes out of his drug induced frenzy, he’s painted a picture of someone with the top of their head cut-off.
Nathan enters his hotel room, only to find Niki there waiting for him. Niki tells him that Jessica is out to kill him and has already killed his FBI agent buddies and that Linderman knows he’s betrayed him and is out to get him.
HRG returns to the hotel from Isaac’s studio and tells his wife about everything. His wife goes off to answer her phone, only to come back, transformed into his partner, Missy. She was on the phone with HRG’s boss and just gave him up. HRG’s boss and two henchmen enter the hotel and corner him.
Back in the casino, Hiro finally gets his hands on the sacred samurai sword and, to escape security, transports himself and Ando to the future. On the roof top of the Devaux building, Hiro and Ando look out over New York, in ruins.
In the present, in NY, Claire arrives at Peter’s apartment and knocks on the door, only to be greeted by her grandmother, Peter and Nathan’s mother. Mrs. Petrelli invites Claire into the apartment where she meets, once again, The Haitian. Mrs. Petrelli tells Claire that she’s been working with The Haitian to try and protect her.
Back at the hotel, Niki asks Nathan to knock her out so Jessica will know that she’s not in control anymore. Nathan knocks her out, steals her gun and heads for his meeting with Linderman. Security leads Nathan down stairs to the kitchen, where he meets Linderman and Linderman is finally revealed! It’s Malcolm McDowell (thanks Violeta for the tip). Malcom has been in a few different Star Treks, A Clockwork Orange, Tank Girl, Entourage (as the owner of Arie’s company) and a number of other roles. He’s a very experienced actor, but I still don’t think he’s a good fit for Linderman, he just doesn’t have a big enough presences, but we shall see. Anyways, Nathan pulls a gun on Linderman and they have a whole philosophical chat about wanting either meaning or happiness in life, since you can’t have either. In the end, Linderman offers to tell Nathan what he knows, to make sure he wins the election and, in two years, to put him in the white house, a heart beat away from being the president.
Peter goes to Mohinders apartment and walks around the apartment looking for him, stopping as blood drips on his head. Peter looks up and Mohinder is pinned against the roof, beat up and bleeding. Mohinder says one word “Sylar”, before Sylar appears and pins Peter against the wall, using his powers to cut his way into Peter’s head!
And that’s where things ended. Talk about your cliffhanger endings, brutal. I guess we’ll have to wait until episode 19 to find out whether or not someone stops Sylar. Peter can’t be killed, I just don’t see it happening, but you never know.
So ends the Heroes episode 18 recap. Stay tuned for another full recap of episode 19 next week, after the show. Who knows, I may even change things up a bit and take a more live approach, we’ll have to see.
Heroes episode 18 “Parasite” Preview and Spoilers
**UPDATE: I found out today that Heroes is going on another hiatus and episode 19 won’t be airing until April 23rd! That explains the super cliffhanger. I don’t want to wait that long for another episode of Heroes! What’s with these breaks anyways? This is so not cool. Now I have to try and dig up little bits of heroes info to keep me occupied for the next 8 weeks. Boo!

Outstanding recap! You will get a ton of hits if Global continues to broadcast new episodes earlier than the USA when the show returns on April 23.
This site: http://www.superhiro.org/1-29-07-which-hero-will-die-next-vt1568-150.html is spending a lot of time discussing the possibilty that Hiro may be stuck in the future (or choose to stay there) in future episodes
chapter 19 will be aired in 7 weeks, not next week….bua bua
Nooooooo, I had no idea they were planning to go on another hiatus. That explains why they left off on such a cliff hanger. Darn it, I hate when they do this!
The man who plays Linderman is Malcom McDowell, who has been in a lot of fairly important movies that I don’t remember the names of right now. The only one I remember is “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead”, which is very good. Anyway, thanks a lot of spoiling the episode for me! Although you did say “if you don’t want to find out what happens before watching, don’t read this” and I just couldn’t wait. Good job.
Thank you very much Violeta, you are absolutely right, it was Malcom McDowell and he’s been in a ton of very important movies and shows, some of which include: A Clockwork Orange, Entourage, Hidalgo, Fantasy Island, Superman, Tank Girl and a whole lot more.
Thanks for the recap! I’m going to have to miss the episode tonight, so I’m glad that Canada gets Heroes a day early. 🙂 I saw your link on the TV Squad Heroes article. Thanks again!
Nooooooooooooo! What??? are you serious? Ive just watched episode 18 and that is such massive cliffhanger, i had to find out when 19 will be aired. 8 weeks??? What?? Surely Peter Petrelli cannot die, i don’t think he will, but even the thought of it. Either peter will escape sylar and runaway, peter will fight sylar (and absolutely wipe the floor with him, my personal favourite option), or they will be interupted (possibly by a knock at the door) and sylar will be forced to flee. Either way, 19 is going to be amazing.
PS i would hugely greatful for any information on how many episodes, or even series there will be, please help! (rumours and speculation would suffice)
PPS Yes, malcolm macdowell is a superb actor, clockwork orange is an amazing film (thank you stanley kubrick), i take it you’ve already picked up on stan lee driving the bus at the end of episode 16. Christopher Eccleston, is another superb british actor who was in “28 days later”, great film. The psychic cop (matt parkman) and nikki sanders also look familiar, but i don’t know were from?
Phew, glad thats off my chest. Great Recap. Thanks
For more info on the actors, go to http://www.imdb.com, the site is fantastic and has tons of information.
BTW, There will be 23 episodes in Volume 1, so there are only 5 episodes to go before it all comes to an end.
Volume 2 has been confirmed and it has also been confirmed that all the characters and story line will be completely different, which makes me sad. I just hope it can stay as good as it is now.
Thanks to everyone for reading the recap!
I am sick to the stomach after watching tonight’s episode.
I can’t believe I have to wait till end of April to
see the next episode. This is pure toture!
I have always fantasized (I think I need help) HGR turning
against his superiors to become the brain of some hero pack
that fights the villains – ok the plot is far more complex
than clear cut good and bad guys but Jack Coleman is so
absolutely fantastic an actor I dread the possibility
of him being written out the show.
I highly doubt you have to worry about Jack getting killed off, I think he is far to integral of a character and has a lot more to do before his time is up. At least I hope, since I’m loving his character now!
i deff agree with your opinions about the show… i dont even watch tv until i discovered heroes last year…. now i watch every episode online (the old ones), and DVR all the ones this year…. its fantastic basically
I simply wonder when a similar show showing Losers would be broadcasted. Joking. Anyway, I just read this and it is kinda apt as in less than 24 hrs, we’ll be having Eps 19 Recap! :0) I’m more for reading this wonderfully written script than watching the show.
Thanks again!
p.s. I’ve loved HRG since the time they showed him protecting his daugter (at the start). I did question if it was for his benefits initially. But I had to give him the benefit of doubt since I couldn’t find anything that was against him. lol.
Thank you very much for commenting. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed reading my recap. 🙂
