American Idol Season 11 Episode 36

The top 4 performed in American Idol Season 11 Episode 35. Tonight 1 more will be sent home.

Phil notwithstanding (I still don’t get it), I wouldn’t be too surprised by any of them leaving, though Hollie, who will tie Elise’s six times in the bottom if she is there again, seems like the most likely candidate, a position with which she’s familiar.

Phillip Phillips is up first. He… returns to the couch and may or may not be safe. Lame, Seacrest.

From there, we fill an hour, concluding with Jennifer Lopez doing what made her famous, wearing revealing clothing and shaking her butt (in between, she sings a little).

All four contestants gather on stage for the results. Jessica Sanchez is in the top three. Joshua Ledet is joining her. Phillip Phillips takes the last spot in the final three. Hollie Cavanagh has been eliminated.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 35

Skylar Laine found herself on the losing end of the audience vote in American Idol Season 11 Episode 34. Tonight the top 4 perform. For 2 damn hours. We start off with California songs. Whatever that means.

Phillip Phillips
Song: Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Jennifer: Joe kind of Cocker quality that I haven’t heard before.
Randy: Started a little rough, but then you were right on the money.
Numbers: 1-866-IDOLS-01 or 1-866-IDOLS-05

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Faithfully by Journey
Randy: Peaking at the right time.
Jennifer: Been waiting to see that from you.
Steven: Over the top choice of song.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-02 or 1-866-IDOLS-06

Joshua Ledet
Song: You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban
Jennifer: Great performance. Loved the drama.
Randy: So excited to see what you do.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-03 or 1-866-IDOLS-07

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Steal Away by Etta James
Jennifer: One of the best in such a long time.
Steven: Nailed that. Showed the other side of your voice.
Randy: Amazing again.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-04 or 1-866-IDOLS-08

I still don’t know what this California Dreamin’ theme was supposed to be about. I expected some Beach Boys, but I guess not. Next we move on to “Songs you wish you wrote.”

Before we get to that, Phillip and Joshua sing This Love by Maroon 5, without anyone trying to embrace anyone. Then the girls do a duet of Eternal Flame by The Bangles. Why are they swinging? As with last week, the girls are a lot stronger singers. And we keep dragging out the night with I’ve Been Waiting for a Girl Like You by Foreigner, an awkward combination of all four singers. I’m about ready to run of things to fast forward.

Phillip Phillips
Song: Volcano by Damien Rice
Steven: Heard the musician that time.
Jennifer: One of the most beautiful, poignant moments.
Randy: One of your best performances of the season.

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: I Can’t Make You Love me by Bonnie Raitt
Steven: Fell a little short.
Jennifer: Emotion got the better of you.
Randy: Didn’t give you a moment. Nowhere to go.

Joshua Ledet
Song: It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World by James Brown
Steven: Never heard anything that good in my life. My life. (Okay, judges, tone it down. We got the hint who your favorite is a long time. You’re running the risk of doing more harm than good.)
Randy: One of the best performances in the history of any show.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going by Jennifer Holliday
Steven: Another winning performance.
Jennifer: Just let out so much. A real moment.
Randy: In it to really win it.

Survivor: One World Episode 13

Kat was eliminated in a fun and exciting blindside in Survivor: One World Episode 12.

Tarzan thinks they would have been smarter than he is. Because apparently he is a threat. To take third place with 0 votes.

Christina, who we’ve been told for weeks is either going home or being thrown in the fire, is now everybody’s friend. Both sides want her, and they both want to bring her to the end knowing she won’t get any votes.

For the reward challenge, they will release three discs by spinning them, then use them to form a decoder. Reward is an overnight stay on a yacht. They all spin around and get dizzy, but it comes down to the puzzle at the end. They’ll have to get the right three numbers in the right order. Chelsea wins reward. She takes Sabrina and Kim, not the person she promised, Christina. Deja vu.

After discussing how Chelsea is a liar and a hypocrite, the three who remain on the island start planning a final three: Tarzan, Alicia, Christina. Worst final three ever, but at least somebody would have done something to shake things up for a change.

Kim hopes to convince Alicia that Tarzan is a mastermind. Really? And it seems to be working. A little.

At the immunity challenge, they pick up bags of puzzle pieces, then complete a fish skeleton puzzle, with one hand tied behind their backs. Kim’s first to complete the first section, with Alicia right behind her. Everybody else is out of it already. Alicia briefly takes the lead but fails to capitalize and loses it while untying her second bag. Kim reloses the lead to Alicia. In a close race, Alicia wins immunity.

So now that Kat’s gone, Tarzan is wearing her shirt, and he also has her panties on his head. But he knows about microbes, so never fear the dirty underpants.

Chelsea suggests that Kim play the idol, but Kim says no. It would be stupid to waste guaranteed final four to save someone who’s a threat anyway, best friend for as long as they’re on the island or not.

I should be surprised, but these people get dumber by the week. Receiving the finger from a jury member, with 4 votes, Tarzan has been voted off the island.

The Celebrity Apprentice 5 Episode 12

As the least dramatic person left, Dayana finally found herself being fired in The Celebrity Apprentice 5 Episode 11.

Teresa thinks she’s Lisa’s next target. After all, she needs somebody to pick on.

This week’s task is to create a 4 page print ad campaign to promote a touch screen hair dryer. It would be nice to have Dayana here. They will be judged on brand messaging, print ad campaign, and overall pitch.

Lisa and Teresa are the project managers.

Because Farooq loved Aubrey, Teresa will be going for the redhead since presumably that’s what Aubrey’s hair color is supposed to be. They also decide on a guy they want. Lisa and Clay have no preference.

They must negotate for models. Teresa reveals all her cards at the start of the meeting. This leads to Lisa pretending that she really wants all the same models. It could be argued that Lisa’s unnecessarily being a bitch, but Teresa just performed poorly at this negotiation. In the end, Teresa got two of the four people she wanted, while Lisa lost nothing because she really didn’t care as long as she got all women, not two guys like she forced Teresa to accept.

For all the drama, the reality is that none of these models are going to either make or break this task.

Aubrey has an idea. She wants to hire her favorite model. Aubrey. Ironically, when their redheaded model that they wanted so badly arrives, she’s blonde, so they send her home.

Lisa’s team has gone with a theme of women being more than what they are on the outside, a concept that may be difficult to portray on paper in 4 pages. The other team has a futuristic theme in which their models are in yoga poses to go along with the Chi brand.

On both teams, it’s difficult to tell who’s the project manager, as neither team leader seems to be managing anything.

After the presentation, Aubrey informs us, as usual, that she did everything, so if they lose, it’s not her fault.

The executives thought Teresa’s team had a lot of passion, and Arsenio was great for a hairless guy. They didn’t think the ad pointed out the features, they didn’t think the photos were really Elle, and they thought Teresa was awkward during the presentation.

As far as the other team, they had a lot of information, paid attention to both the Elle and Chi audiences, and they liked the back cover with the tomboy look. However, the clothing was a bit dated, and the presentation lacked passion.

Based on the feedback, it’s pretty obvious who won this. Lisa’s team wins, and she receives $100,000 for her charity.

Teresa would fire Arsenio because he did not do much work. Arsenio responds with the same criticism to her. For a change, Aubrey can just sit there and keep her mouth shut, while these two argue with each other.

Since the executives loved Aubrey and Arsenio, Teresa is fired.

After the boardroom, they are called right back to the boardroom. It’s interview time with John Rich and Marlee Matlin. After that, two people will be fired. I suspect one of Aubrey and Lisa will survive unscathed, but they will be split up as they should have been weeks ago due to their very bad creative concepts and general mean spiritedness.

Marlee thought Aubrey was nervous, but she can identify with her charity. John thinks she’s a chess player, who’s a little green.

Marlee feels Clay is sweet and genuine, but she wonders whether he’s a leader or a follower. They both give him a hard time for only being project manager twice.

John likes Arsenio’s energy, though he can be a little out of control. Marlee can see his passion about his charity.

Lisa talks a lot and comes on strong, and she can’t control her emotions. John can appreciate her toughness because she had to travel a lot like he does.

Due to her lack of emotional control, Lisa has been fired.

One more person will be fired. Next week.

The Amazing Race Season 20 Winners

Bopper & Mark were eliminated in The Amazing Race 20 Episode 10, leaving us with four unappealing teams remaining in the fight for $1 million. As with Big Brother, I find myself oddly rooting for Brendon & Rachel, if only because the other contestants are just more objectionable.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived, presumably.

Teams will now fly nearly 4000 miles to Hiroshima, Japan. All teams will be on the same flight.

Undeterred by their near elimination in the last leg, Art & JJ continue to spend their energy on bashing the green team, who get left behind on the second bus separate from the other teams. They’re not behind for long, as they get help on the bus to find the right train. Rachel & Dave, however, get stuck trying to figure out the confusing ticket system, so now it’s time for them to argue as well. As a result of this, they miss the final ferry of the night as well, putting them 7 hours behind.

Of course, seeing as it’s just before midnight, there’s an hours of operation that will equalize all the teams again, so all the drama of the night before is moot.

Their first stop of the morning is Peace Park, the site where the atomic bomb was dropped. Though the city has been rebuilt, many buildings remain as they were as a reminder.

From there, they will head to Osaka by high speed bullet train. They’re stopping at TV 8 Studio. I’m expecting some crazy Japanese game show to come of this.

The road block is to participate in the Bring That Chicken Home Game. Sprinting on the running track, they must jump and grab three chickens and bring them to the other side.

Road block (in order of arrival): Art, Vanessa, Brendon, Rachel

Vanessa, coming off a twisted ankle earlier in the race, is forced to do the road block in order to keep the number even, probably something this team should have planned for sooner. Tough to do considering the task involves running and jumping, but she keeps going until she completes it rather than taking the penalty. Afterward, her main concern is that she needs to fix her eyelashes.

The detour is at the Umeda Sky Building. Strangely, neither task is related to heights, though. The detour is a choice between photo cut-out or bingo shout-out. In bingo, they’ll have to take sushi from a conveyor belt, identify it, put it on a bingo card, then eat it. In photo, they will need to take photos of people with life sized sumo cut outs.

Bingo: Art & JJ, Brendon & Rachel, Vanessa & Ralph
Photo: Rachel & Dave

For the bingo task, although everything’s in Japanese, they’re playing with the locals who are helping them figure out what’s what. Yeah, this is apparently a real thing, not invented just for the show.

Dave tells Rachel she needs to use her personality to help win the task because she’s great with people. Funny, when communicating with him, I have not seen her be pleasant. It turns out they have picked the simpler of the two detours, though neither appears overly challenging. Bad news for Vanessa & Ralph, who are too far behind to catch up, no matter how typically frazzled Rachel is getting.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Osaka Castle.

First: Rachel & Dave (win a trip to New Zealand)
Second: Art & JJ
Third: Brendon & Rachel
Eliminated: Vanessa & Ralph

Finishing last, Vanessa & Ralph have been eliminated, as the other three continue to the final leg of the race.

Rachel & Dave have tied the record for the most legs won in a race, with 7 first place finishes. Their only problem is they don’t seem to like each other very much, and Rachel tends to be more of a hindrance than a help, which she takes out on Dave, who granted seems to be a control freak. Art & JJ won 3 legs in a row (each one as a direct result of the first). Too bad they were such jackasses. Brendon & Rachel are the only team left standing who have yet to win a leg. As with the other Rachel, this Rachel has a tendency to get emotional without much provocation.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived.

First: Rachel & Dave – 4:15PM
Second: Art & JJ – 4:47PM
Third: Brendon & Rachel – 5:05PM

From here, they will take their final flight to Honolulu, Hawaii. Again they will all be on the same flight.

Upon arrival, they must figure out that they are heading to the twin towers. Rachel & Dave get their cab driver to solve the riddle for them, and he knows exactly where to go. Brendon & Rachel have similar luck with an Internet search. Art & JJ, relying on following someone else (as they’ve accused Big Brother of doing), find themselves running around in circles when their cab driver is unsuccessful at tailing Rachel & Dave.

I guess this is why there wasn’t a height task in the last leg. They must ascend and rappel up and down the 45 story building to spot their next clue in the distance.

The road block requires them to shave ice using a samurai sword.

Road block (in order of arrival): Dave, Brendon, JJ

Rachel & Dave lose their very good cab driver here, as they must make their way by foot to some helicopters. Luckily, Rachel is paying attention because Dave asks for a ride. Brendon & Rachel are not so lucky, as neither teammate is paying attention, so they take a cab to some random incorrect destination. This allows Art & JJ to leapfrog them. Here comes another Rachel meltdown.

Their next task is to become north short lifeguards and rescue a swimmer.

The second road block, which must be done by the person who did not do the first one, is hill surfing on an oiled up sled. They’ll then have to roll a lava rock into a target.

Road block (in order of arrival): Art, Rachel, Rachel

After paddling their way across the water and finding the pit stop, Rachel & Dave are informed that they have not yet completed all tasks. They have to go find the road block that Art & JJ are already doing. I’m not sure how they missed the mark here, but it would seem that there is the end of the race.

With Art not having Rachel’s balance, she is able to pass him. Art continues to fall off his sled, as the other Rachel finally arrives and passes him.

This time, having completed all tasks, Rachel & Dave are The Amazing Race 20 winners. A deserving team if ever there were one, in spite of their bickering. Art & JJ manage to get ahead of Rachel on the second part of the road block to place second, leaving Brendon & Rachel with third place.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 34

The top 5 performed in American Idol Season 11 Episode 33. Tonight 1 more will be sent home.

Unlike last week, this one’s a tough call. Any of them could easily go. I imagine we’ll see Hollie in the bottom for a fifth time as she approaches Elise’s record. In spite of being the judges’ shameless new favorite, the best singer 42 year old Jennifer Lopez has seen in 50 years, Josh could easily join her. Even frontrunner Phil could finally end up in the bottom (and after last night deserves to).

Joshua is up first. He is safe.

Hollie Cavanagh and Phillip Phillips are next. Hollie is in the bottom two again. Phil’s legion of fans carry him through a mediocre night.

That leaves us with Jessica Sanchez and Skylar Laine. Jessica is safe. Skylar is in the bottom two.

So now we have a fight for survival between Hollie and Skylar. Skylar has been eliminated, as Hollie escapes yet again.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 33

Elise Testone was finally eliminated in American Idol Season 11 Episode 32. Tonight the top 5 perform songs from the 60s and then Brit pop.

Why the bloody hell is this show still 2 hours long? Seriously, Fox, is your schedule that thin?

Phillip Phillips
Song: The Letter by The Box Tops
Randy: Made it new for me.

Number: 1-866-IDOLS-04 or 1-866-IDOLS-09

Joshua Ledet
Song: Ain’t Too Proud to Beg by The Temptations
Steven: One of the top two best idols of all time. (So he’s better than Kelly? Or Carrie?)
Jennifer: So sick.
Randy: Could make a record like this and bring R&B back.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-05 or 1-866-IDOLS-10

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis
Steven: Nailed it.
Jennifer: Very beautiful and intimate.

Phillip Phillips
Song: Time of the Season by The Zombies
Randy: He really can sing the melody. Nice.
Jennifer: Really suited your style.
Steven: Sang it well.

The girls perform Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher. Way better than the boys.

Skylar Laine
Song: You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield
Skylar: Peaking at the right time. Flawless.
Jennifer: You wanna win, don’t you?
Steven: Brought it into the 21st century so well.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker
Steven: What a great singer you are.
Jennifer: Reminded me of when you sang I Will Always Love You.
Randy: In the top of the leaderboard. So pro.

Joshua Ledet

Randy: What it’s really all about. One of the best singers ever on this show.
Jennifer: One of the best singers I’ve seen in 50 years.

Survivor: One World Episode 12

Continuing the collapse of the male inhabitants of the island, Troyzan was the next to go in Survivor: One World Episode 11.

Alicia informs us of the new power rankings. There’s here, and then nobody else. She is afraid of Sabrina, though.

Their families have made their way to the island for a Sprint commercial. The reward challenge that follows ties them together to make their way through a rope untying course. Reward is food with their loved ones. Kat and her cousin have the lead for most of the time and squeeze out a victory over Kim and Chelsea. Although Kim lied to her and did not pick her last time, Kat will be going with Kim and her sister. Alicia and her brother will also be joining them. She just wants to spend time with them because they’re her friends. No strategy, no nothing. Sabrina, Chelsea, and even Kim say that Kat made a mistake not taking Tarzan (and his wife of 30 years) and Christina (and her father who just got a kidney transplant).

The group at the reward discusses getting rid of Sabrina. That leaves the group at camp to talk about getting rid of Kat, though Tarzan can’t figure out why because she sucks.

At the immunity challenge, they will stand on a ledge over the water while holding a handle behind their backs and above their hips, with the incline increasing at set intervals. Sabrina is out after 10 minutes. Tarzan’s not far behind. Alicia drops at 20 minutes. Chelsea’s right behind her. Christina follows them closely. The final 2, each of whom is in as much danger as the one next to her, outlast them by a large margin. After an hour, Kat starts to ask Kim to drop, but it does not happen. Kim wins immunity.

Kat’s angry about losing to Kim, who at 28 is like an old maid. Meanwhile, Alicia says she’s less afraid of Sabrina (first one out) but more afraid of Kat (second place). That makes one more potential swing vote to join Chelsea. The most adamant holdout against getting rid of Kat is Kim, who wants to eliminate the smarter player.

Sabrina promises to cast her jury vote emotionally. This will not end well when she gets blindsided.

Kat tells us blindsides are fun and exciting. Kiss of death.

With 4 votes, Kat has been voted off the island. Well, that was fun and exciting. The dominoes all fell, and nobody ended up supporting her. Not at all what I expected at the start of the episode, but she killed herself by doing so well in those last two challenges.
