The Biggest Loser Season 10 Episode 3

It came down to a battle between the oldest and the youngest in The Biggest Loser Season 10 Episode 2, and the youngest contestant Allie ended up being sent home.

Having been saved by the other contestants, Tina has an announcement. Now she wants to go home. So get lost then. If you don’t want to be there and instead would rather go on vacation with your family, then do it.

Chiming in, Lisa says she plans to learn a few more things, then she, too, wants to leave so that she can go take care of Allie, who can’t do it alone. Anybody else who doesn’t want to be there, feel free to leave. Plenty of other people would kill for the opportunity.

Patrick has made his mind up to get this done now for his sons rather than waiting until it’s too late. Elizabeth wants to be able to live an active lifestyle and do things like go dancing.

Brendan’s getting on Bob’s nerves by taking it easy and hoping nobody will notice. Not as much as Jesse, though, who tosses weights on the ground and sees Bob’s bad side.

Bob’s message for Tina is that, in order for her to pay it forward to her overweight daughter, she has to stay on the ranch and learn whatever lessons she can.

Jillian hopes that the women don’t get slaughtered again this week, with 8 of the 9 bottom spaces having been occupied by them last week.

Today they will be playing tennis, with the help of Anna Kournikova, who’s not just a swimsuit model. That leads into the pop challenge, which has the prize of immunity. Each player has a cylinder, which can be filled with 25 tennis balls. Once someone’s cylinder is full, they are out. Brendan intends to keep Frado and Patrick safe. The easy first target is Tina because nobody will feel bad about her not having immunity. She is the first one out. Burgandy wanted to target all the guys, so they in turn have decided to target her, and they eliminate her next. The next target is Sophia, then Ada and Lisa. Aaron is the first guy to be eliminated, followed by Adam. Back to the girls with the elimination of Elizabeth. Rick is out next, and then Mark and Jessica. Jesse is the next person eliminated, leaving the trio standing. Adam believes Frado, Brendan, and Patrick have some kind of agreement, but there are 12 other people who could have easily targeted them but chose not to. Patrick is the first of the three to fall. Having a slight edge, Frado manages to win immunity.

Alison hopes they got in a good workout because tomorrow… is the weigh-in.

Following the challenge, Brendan, Frado, and Patrick decide to make it official and form an alliance. It’s a bit early for an alliance, particularly the way the rules are working this season so far.

Just like last week, half of them will below the yellow line, with one person having immunity.

Frado: 337 pounds (-3, 0.88%, immune)

Burgandy: 218 pounds (-1, 0.46%) – asking the question “Why bother?”
Tina: 243 pounds (-4, 1.62%)
Sophia: 252 pounds (-6, 2.33%)
Ada: 234 pounds (-6, 2.50%)
Lisa: 267 pounds (-5, 1.84%)
Aaron: 431 pounds (-7, 1.60%)
Adam: 356 pounds (-12, 3.26%)

From this point forward, each time somebody weighs in, one person will be knocked below the yellow line.

Elizabeth: 229 pounds (-3, 1.29%) – putting Burgandy below the yellow line
Rick: 306 pounds (-8, 2.55%) – putting Elizabeth below the yellow line
Mark: 369 pounds (-11, 2.89%) – putting Aaron below the yellow line
Jessica: 261 pounds (-7, 2.61%) – putting Tina below the yellow line
Jesse: 339 pounds (-10, 2.95%) – putting Lisa below the yellow line
Patrick: 366 pounds (-12, 3.17%) – putting Sophia below the yellow line
Brendan: 326 pounds (-5, 1.51%) – putting himself below the yellow line

The women put up a slightly better fight than they did last week, but 5 of the 7 spots below the yellow line are women, with only Ada and Jessica being safe.

As the player with the highest percentage of weight loss for the week, Adam will have the opportunity to save one player. The remaining six will compete in the challenge.

Burgandy immediately runs to Adam with a sob story, hoping he will save her. Eventually, Aaron also decides to make a pitch, about his relationship with his son.

Tina has now decided she wants to be there. I’m not holding my breath on this one.

Adam saves Aaron, leaving only 1 guy in danger of elimination.

There are four brass rings and four piles of sand, 175 tons worth. All six will start digging in the first pile of sand until the ring is found. That person will be safe. Great, so we’re basing safety on dumb luck. Elizabeth finds the first ring. Brendan uncovers the second ring, and Sophia grabs it from him. Brendan gets the third ring. The final ring goes to Burgandy.

That puts Tina and Lisa in danger of elimination. Ironically enough, both of them have said they want to go home, although they are now saying otherwise. I’m not sure it matters one way or the other.

With 5 votes, Tina is not The Biggest Loser, a foregone conclusion. From her starting weight of 263 pounds, Tina now weighs 205 pounds. She’s perfectly happy with her elimination, and now she wants to help her daughter, who has lost 85 pounds from presumably about the 350 pound range.

The Biggest Loser Season 10 Episode 2

In an aggressive process of trimming the cast, 7 people were eliminated in The Biggest Loser Season 10 Episode 1, leaving us with a remaining cast of 14 contestants heading to the ranch.

Bob and Jillian have been granted the chance to each save one person. Bob chooses Aaron, hoping it will be good for him and his son. Jillian chooses Elizabeth, who fainted at the challenge.

Alison wants to make one thing clear. They may be wearing matching shirts, but they will not be competing in teams. It’s an individual game already.

Lisa says the first day’s workout is much worse than natural child birth.

Tina is from Boring, but falling off the treadmill is certainly eventful for her. Not far behind, Rick passes out. Elizabeth continues to struggle with shortness of breath.

It’s time for the first visit to Dr. H for a wake up call. Lisa gets to view a picture of herself, which is worth 1000 words. In addition to her terrible eating habits, she also smokes, combining to make her inner age 62, double her actual age. Tina has fat being deposited in her organs, including her heart. Aaron is 51% fat and has diabetes. Patrick has the arteries of a 65 year old man. For a normal 54 year old, the risk of heart problems is 4%. Rick’s risk of some sort of heart catastrophe within the next 5 years is 32%. Adam’s mother died due to diabetes and obesity, both of which he also suffers from. Allie had gastric bypass surgery at age 14, but it’s eliminated muscle along with the fat, leading to her having the highest percentage of body fat on the show.

Bob has an obvious point that should be clear to an average grade schooler (but more and more isn’t). Their problem is that their food portions are huge. This isn’t rocket science here. Calories in minus calories out. The quality of the food can certainly make a difference, but the amount of food is their biggest problem.

During workout number two, Brendan has a question for Bob. “Are we almost done?” Really?

After the workout, a few of them get a special delivery. Their favorite foods, which contain more calories than they need for a full day, let alone one meal. They actually make sandwiches with fries on them. And as if regular helpings of mayo and bacon aren’t bad enough, double bacon and double mayo is somehow viewed as a good concept.

It’s been over two weeks since they were weighed in at home, and their weight loss journey should have begun then. Tonight’s weigh-in will be the same as any other. They will face the scale, and there will be a yellow line. It’s just moved. Up and up and up. Half of them will fall below the yellow line.

Mark: 380 pounds (-41, 9.74%)
Tina: 247 pounds (-16, 6.08%)
Patrick: 378 pounds (-22, 5.50%)
Rick: 314 pounds (-36, 10.29%)
Allie: 305 pounds (-17, 5.28%)
Frado: 340 pounds (-27, 7.36%)
Sophia: 258 pounds (-14, 5.15%)
Ada: 240 pounds (-18, 6.98%)

Due to how the yellow line works this week, from this point forward, every time somebody weighs in, one person will fall below the yellow line.

Burgandy: 219 pounds (-12, 5.19%), putting Sophia below the yellow line
Jesse: 339 pounds (-30, 8.13%), putting Burgandy below the yellow line
Jessica: 268 pounds (-14, 4.96%), putting herself below the yellow line
Adam: 368 pounds (-34, 8.46%), putting Allie below the yellow line
Lisa: 272 pounds (-16, 5.56%), putting Patrick below the yellow line
Brendan: 331 pounds (-31, 8.56%), putting Lisa below the yellow line
Elizabeth: 232 pounds (-12, 4.92%), putting herself below the yellow line
Aaron: 438 pounds (-30, 6.41%), putting Tina below the yellow line

7 of the 8 people below the yellow line are women. The only woman not below the line was Ada, who was one spot above. These chicks need to woman up, or risk being steamrolled. They are joined by Patrick, who for his weight and age should be performing a lot better.

Rick has the highest percentage of weight loss this week, which means he will have the opportunity to save one person. In addition, there will be a challenge for the people under the yellow line.

Before the very first elimination challenge, Rick is able to make his decision. He chooses to save fellow green shirt wearer Patrick, leaving only women in danger.

All of the contestants will race to reach a flag, and the first person to reach it will be safe. The remaining players will race again. The two final people without a flag will be up for elimination, with the decision to be made by the eight players above the yellow line. Sophia wins pretty easily. In the second heat, Elizabeth takes off and pushes through her asthma. Burgandy is not happy, blaming Jessica for participating in full contact sprinting, but she’s happier (I guess) in the third race when she wins. This is followed by a win from Lisa. That leaves just one safety spot remaining, which Jessica wins in a close race with Allie.

Allie and Tina are in danger of being eliminated. It’s the oldest contestant going up against the youngest. Allie does not feel she has learned enough. Tina feels sympathy for somebody who’s the same age as her kids, but she knows she needs to be there, although she’s not entirely sure she wants to be.

I’d have gotten rid of the person who’s not sure whether she wants to be there, but with 5 votes, Allie is not The Biggest Loser. From her starting weight of 322, Allie now weighs 262, for a total loss of 60 pounds. However, she has learned that she cannot count on her mother, who refuses to change her ways in spite of her stroke. Unable to count on her real family, she went to Biggest Loser 8 winner Danny for help.

The Biggest Loser Season 10 Episode 1

The Biggest Loser is back for season 10 with a new cast of 21 contestants. This season’s theme is about paying it forward, with the hope of reaching communities, rather than just individual contestants.

If 21 contestants sounds like an odd number, there’s a reason for that. Bob, Jillian, and Alison will travel to seven cities: Detroit, Los Angeles, Portland, Atlanta, Phoenix, Oklahoma City, and Boston. In each city there will be three contestants. Of those, the ones who finish the the fitness challenges first will win a spot on the ranch. The seven who finish in last will be eliminated, but will have another shot at a later date. Not liking this twist. Why not just have the losers all on one team like season 4?

First stop is Detroit, where Jesse Atkins, Sophia Franklin, and Aaron Thompkins are the first contestants. Bob thinks that all three of these people need to be on this show. For that matter, half the audience does, too. Jesse has a fog weighing over everything and is wasting his life. Sophia says she was shut down by her brother’s death, although prior to that she was 220 pounds to begin with. Aaron eats rather than being an alcoholic. At this weight, it’s hard to say which is worse.

Jesse: 369 pounds
Sophia: 272 pounds
Aaron: 468 pounds

The challenge starts now. The first two to step 500 times will make it to the ranch, while the other goes home. Aaron gets off to an early lead, which lasts about 23 steps. Sophia and Jesse hit 100, with Aaron bringing up the rear. Sophia hits 250 first, about 5 ahead of Jesse. She’s also the first to hit 500. Jesse’s a close second. Aaron, the largest contestant of the season by 40 pounds, is the one who will not be going to campus.

The next stop is the windy city, Los Angeles. Ada Wong, Adam Hurtado, and Montina Cooper are there to compete. Adam’s been ridiculed his whole life, but that never stopped him from gaining more weight. His mother, as well, was obese, dying of a heart attack at age 51. Ada’s brothers died at an early age, and her parents won’t let her forget it. Montina is a backup singer for Beyonce, a dream job, but she’s tired of being in the background due to her image.

Adam: 402 pounds
Ada: 258 pounds
Montina: 287 pounds

It’s time to get to stepping. Adam jumps to an early lead, which lasts about 70 steps before Ada takes over. Montina is quickly falling behind the pack. Ada hits 500 first, followed by Adam. Montina’s knee has been bothering her throughout the competition, but she finishes alongside her husband and son.

Next stop is Portland, where we are joined by Mike from season 7, as well as contestants Corey Pinkerton, Burgandy Keel, and Tina Elliott. Burgandy has 5 kids and puts her family first, leading to convenient excuses. Corey wants his wife to have a strong husband. Tina is this season’s grandma.

Burgandy: 231 pounds
Corey: 391 pounds
Tina: 263 pounds

They will not be stepping. Rather, they will have a 1 mile race. Corey takes off pretty quickly. Burgandy passes him eventually, and he begins walking. His hope is that he can at least beat Tina, who’s more than twice his age. Burgandy is the first person to cross the finish line. Corey’s in second but not with a particularly large lead. With a short distance left to the line, Corey collapses. He gets up and tries again, then he falls again. When he’s down, Tina crosses the line. I’m sensing a pattern here in which the biggest people are going to be the ones who get cut.

Atlanta brings us Patrick House, Anna Wright, and Rick Deroque. Anna lost her 3 year old son to cancer in 1999. Rick wants to be around for his 5 kids and 9 grandkids. Patrick hopes to make a change so that his kids don’t pick up his bad habits.

Anna: 330 pounds
Rick: 350 pounds
Patrick: 400 pounds

Their challenge is also to run a mile. Rick overtakes the lead from Patrick. He hopes to prove that being the old guy isn’t going to be the determining factor here, and that heart is what matters. He keeps right on going to finish first. Patrick is behind him. In the rear is Anna, who’s having a meltdown, but at least she keeps going to finish the race.

We meet Jessica Delfs, Mark Pinkhasovich, and Shanna Masten in Phoenix. It’s a hundred degrees. In the shade. But it’s a dry heat. Jessica had a rough relationship with her mother. Pigging out was her way of getting even, but she’s really only hurting herself. Mark kept eating the same in college as he did when he was working out a lot in high school, which led to the freshman 50. Shanna was diagnosed with cancer last year. Having fought to live through that, she’s ready to beat obesity, too, since that’s self inflicted and she has a choice about it.

Jessica: 282 pounds
Mark: 421 pounds
Shanna: 242 pounds

They will be competing in a 1 mile run. Jessica takes the lead, and Shanna falls behind. Keeping that lead throughout, Jessica places first. Mark performs quite well considering his size and places second. That leaves Shanna in third, which is a shame because she’s got such an inspirational story.

Boston is the final destination, and there we meet Mark Kruger of season 5, along with contestants Alfredo Dinten, Elizabeth Ruiz, and Brendan Donovan. Brendan has been dieting since around the age of 13. He teaches a wellness program, but is unable to practice what he teaches. Elizabeth gained 90 pounds during her abusive marriage. Alfredo is a diabetic who’s been told he will be dead within 5 years if he does not lose the weight.

Brendan: 362 pounds
Elizabeth: 244 pounds
Alfredo: 367 pounds

This last group will also be stepping. This is starting off to be a close race. Alfredo is the first to 400 steps, with Brendan about 10 behind him. Elizabeth is falling behind, and the inhaler isn’t helping. Her body gives up, and she collapses. She’s fine, but she will not be going to the ranch.

So that rounds out the 14 contestants who will be competing on this season:

Ada
Adam
Alfredo
Allie
Brendan
Burgandy
Jesse
Jessica
Lisa
Mark
Patrick
Rick
Sophia
Tina

She’s now happily remarried, but with one overweight daughter, and health issues such as high blood pressure and sleep apnea, Tina knows she has to get healthy for herself and her family.
