The Amazing Race 16 Episode 4

Monique & Shawne prayed but to no avail, as they were eliminated in The Amazing Race 16 Episode 3.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived, or so I would assume. Jet & Cord leave at 10:57PM.

Teams must now fly more than 8000 miles to Frankfurt, Germany, where they will then catch a train to Hamburg. The first flight is at 11:10AM, an indication that there will be some airport bunching. Even further indication is that they again don’t show the departure order. All teams end up on the same flight to Buenos Aires. However, they are taking varying routes to go from there.

Via Paris, arrives at 12:35PM: Jet & Cord, Louie & Michael
Direct, arrives at 3:00PM: Carol & Brandy, Dan & Jordan
Via Sao Paolo, arrives at 3:40PM: Joe & Heidi, Steve & Allie, Brent & Caite, Jordan & Jeff

Carol & Brandy have a word for the day: respectful. Well, we’ll see how that works out. Dan hates travel, but he agreed to do the show anyway for his brother.

The first train leaves at 3:37, plenty of time for the first flight, but it leaves the other two teams running with minutes to spare. Not quite quick enough. They run and arrive just in time to see the train leaving. At least they’re not alone. The last group had no chance of even catching it.

The train takes them to an intersection, where teams must pair up. The first pairing is predetermined by flight schedule: Jet & Cord and Louie & Michael. I was expecting Joe & Heidi to pair with their allies, but they instead opt to go with Steve & Allie. Carol & Brandy and Dan & Jordan have been getting along and will team up. That leaves Jeff & Jordan and Brent & Caite.

Two people from different teams must work together to complete a road block, a race first. The road block is to go to Hamburg Harbour and perform a 155 foot bungee in the middle of the city.

Jordan lets Caite lead the way there. The blonde leading the blonde. They get on the wrong train headed in the opposite direction from where they need to go.

Joe’s running on a bad knee, which can only get worse as the race progresses.

Road block (in order of arrival): Jet and Michael, Joe and Allie, Dan and Brandy, Jordan and Caite

Jet proves one important fact: you can bungee jump and not lose your hat.

The next stop is the statue of Kaiser Wilhelm, and the intersection is now at an end. The detour is a choice between soccer or sauerkraut. In soccer, teams must hit 5 targets in the goal. In sauerkraut, teams must eat a plate of sauerkraut before the song ends. An unwritten rule in this race is don’t do food if you can avoid it. This, however, does not look too bad. It actually looks like the right choice. Well, except for Jordan & Jeff. She spends the time plugging her ears and nose, and he doesn’t fair much better.

Along the way, Jet & Cord seem to have gotten themselves pretty lost, and are down with the middle of the pack. Brent & Caite also get lost, with her appearing on the verge of a meltdown, and Jordan & Jeff don’t know where their cab driver is taking them. They later find out he doesn’t know where he’s going either, relying on his GPS until they are in the middle of nowhere.

Caite says she’s been playing soccer since she was 5, which looks to be the case on her first kick, although she pretty quickly ends up on the ground crying about injuring her leg.

Sauerkraut: Louie & Michael, Joe & Heidi (switched from soccer), Carol & Brandy
Soccer: Steve & Allie, Jet & Cord, Dan & Jordan, Brent & Caite, Jordan & Jeff (switched from sauerkraut)

Teams must now make their way to the Haifisch Bar and share a boot of beer. This could well get someone tipsy. Louie picks up the slack for Michael, who does not like beer. Steve is more than happy to chug some beer. Like Michael, Cord also does not drink, leaving it to Jet, who doesn’t like the beer anyway. Caite is revolted, so Brent will have to drink until he pukes, then drink some more. Jeff is another quite thrilled person.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is the Indra club, the first place The Beatles played in Hamburg, located in the Red Light District, which Jet observes is not in the bible belt.

First: Louie & Michael (win $5,000 each)
Second: Steve & Allie
Third: Joe & Heidi
Fourth: Jet & Cord
Fifth: Carol & Brandy
Sixth: Dan & Jordan
Seventh: Brent & Caite
Non-eliminated: Jordan & Jeff

Almost done in by their cab driver, Jordan & Jeff are saved by a non-elimination leg. In the next leg, they will face a speed bump.

The Amazing Race 16 Episode 3

Grandmother and granddaughter Jody & Shannon were eliminated in The Amazing Race 16 Episode 2.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived, except for the sick Brent & Caite.

First: Jet & Cord – 11:20PM
Second: Joe & Heidi – 11:55PM
Third: Carol & Brandy – 11:55PM
Fourth: Monique & Shawne – 1:22AM
Fifth: Jordan & Jeff – 2:01AM
Sixth: Steve & Allie – 2:23AM
Seventh: Dan & Jordan- 2:25AM
Eighth: Louie & Michael – 3:12AM
Ninth: Brent & Caite: 4:25AM (3 hours and 5 minutes after scheduled departure)

Carol & Brandy say they bicker about the stupidest things, not something which will help them on the race.

Caite’s sick, and Brent may not be far behind. They think it’s either dehydration or food poisoning.

Teams will take 1 of 2 buses on a 6 hour ride through the Andes Mountains into Bariloche, Argentina. Upon arrival, they will drive themselves to an old saloon, El Boliche Viejo, where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid. When they get there, they will have to play a game of 5 card stud against the Travelocity roaming gnome.

The first three teams to arrive will get on the first bus, so it’s pretty well predetermined what the order will be, not that it makes a large difference.

First bus (departs at 8:30AM): Jet & Cord, Joe & Heidi, Carol & Brandy
Second bus (departs at 8:50AM): Monique & Shawne, Jordan & Jeff, Steve & Allie, Dan & Jordan, Louie & Michael, Brent & Caite

Everybody follows the cowboys. Based on the results of the previous leg, they believe they’re strong contenders. Knowing they’re being followed and knowing they have the right directions, Jet & Cord just pull over and let everybody else pass.

Dan & Jordan continue to struggle driving stick. This could well cost them the race at some point.

The next destination is the Pena Gaucha, where the road block is steer roping. This is tailor made to the cowboys, who should now be able to get a comfortable lead back.

Road block: Heidi, Carol, Jet, Jeff, Steve, Shawne, Michael/Louie, Dan, Brent

Teams must then drive themselves to Puente Nirihuau, where they will search the cliffs overlooking the river for their next clue. The cowboys figure that breaking the gnome may be better than breaking their legs, should it come down to a choice between the two.

The detour is a choice between horse sense or horse power. In horse sense, they will use an old time compass to follow coordinates by counting out steps. They will then dig up a bag, and if it matches, they will get their next clue. Counting steps and then digging? Does not sound good. In horse power, teams will play polo using a practice pony and must attempt to score a goal in 9 swings or less.

Horse power: Jet & Cord, Steve & Allie, Carol & Brandy (switched from horse sense), Joe & Heidi (switched from horse sense), Dan & Jordan (switched from horse sense), Brent & Caite, Louie & Michael (switched from horse sense)
Horse sense: Jordan & Jeff, Monique & Shawne (switched from horse power)

Joe’s under the impression that the compass on his watch will help him here. Oh no. Brandy wants Carol to be the leader, kinda, but the bickering does not look like it will end regardless of who the leader is. Jeff & Jordan seem to have figured out the task, except that they don’t know who the lead bandit is. It does not seem as if they’ve read the clue. Luckily, Louie & Michael hand their bag to them on a silver platter. Jeff’s decided that he and Jordan are too stupid to reproduce.

The trailing teams begin to pile up on the horse power detour, creating a battle for last.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Estancia Fortin Chacabuco, a ranch at the foot of the Andes mountains.

First: Jet & Cord (win a trip to Chile)
Second: Steve & Allie
Third: Carol & Brandy
Fourth: Joe & Heidi
Fifth: Jordan & Jeff
Sixth: Dan & Jordan
Seventh: Brent & Caite
Eighth: Louie & Michael
Eliminated: Monique & Shawne

Finding out that God does not care about the results of the race, Monique & Shawne have been eliminated. And I was so looking forward to the sick whiny people being eliminated instead.

The Amazing Race 16 Episode 2

Unable to complete the final road block in The Amazing Race 16 Episode 1, Adrian & Dana were the first team eliminated from the race.

Teams depart in the order in which they arrived. Granted, the departure order is irrelevant, so much so that they don’t even bother to show it.

First: Jordan & Jeff
Second: Monique & Shawne
Third: Jet & Cord
Fourth: Steve & Allie
Fifth: Joe & Heidi
Sixth: Carol & Brandy
Seventh: Brent & Caite
Eighth: Dan & Jordan
Ninth: Louie & Michael
Tenth: Jody & Shannon

The next destination is Puerto Varas, Chile via bus. From there, they will drive, boat, and climb to their next clue. All teams end up on the same bus.

Brent & Caite are upset that Carol & Brandy view her as just a pageant queen. As if she would be on this show if she were anything else.

Carol & Brandy have decided to make an alliance with Heidi & Joe. This leads Joe to hold a spot for them, which causes animosity amongst the other teams. Interestingly, this move gets the alliance on the first bus, while those Carol & Brandy were allowed to cut in front of are stuck going a couple hours later.

For all the drama this causes, the first bus turns out to maybe not be the best move. The cowboys talk to the locals to figure this out, while Jordan & Jeff figure out themselves and talk the models into going with them. Rather, taking a bus to Temuco and then another one to their destination will be faster. That said, we’ve seen such a move backfire. Either they’re way ahead, or they’re competing for last.

First bus (via Temuco, leaves at 9:15AM): Jet & Cord, Jordan & Jeff, Brent & Caite
Second bus (direct, leaves at 5:30PM): Heidi & Joe, Carol & Brandy
Third bus (direct, leaves at 7:45PM): Steve & Allie, Louie & Michael, Monique & Shawne, Dan & Jordan, Jody & Shannon

Upon arrival in Temuco, Jet & Cord realize the other teams are on an earlier bus. They go to see if they can get on that other bus, but they’re told that the bus is in another terminal, 10 minutes away. They keep all that information under their hats, allowing the other teams to figure it out for themselves when the bus doesn’t show up. They leave to go down the street just after 6:30, and they find out that the bus is gone. Now they have to go back and hope there’s room on the 7:00 bus. Just as that bus is leaving, they pull up. Well, it’s way too late for that now. No more buses for the day. What a stupid move. They should have just stuck around and took the 7:00 bus in the first place, rather than going for the other one after it already left.

For all the time they spent on this, you’d think it would matter, but they find out that the next bus leaves at 1AM, which should put them within spitting distance of the buses that went direct, while the cowboys are likely to hit an hours of operation at some point. That some point is almost immediately. They drive to the site okay but are told they have to wait until 7:30.

The second Temuco bus ends up arriving after the first direct bus but before the second one, putting Jordan & Jeff and Brent & Caite in fourth and fifth, leaving that last direct bus battling for last.

Despite the hours of operation, the cowboys are still the first ones on the trail, but their lead has mostly evaporated while they were waiting.

Rule 1 before coming on the race: learn how to drive stick. The brothers thought this is something Jordan would enjoy, but it turns out he doesn’t seem to know completely what he’s doing. As if they’re not bad off enough due to their struggling driving capability, they also don’t know where they’re going either.

The detour is a choice between two creatures revered by the locals: llamas or condors. In llama adoration, teams must dress a llama by putting a blanket and scarf on a potentially stubborn animal. In condor consternation, teams must dress as birds and then take flight. It appears that both detours are pretty simple, although the llama one is the only one they can possibly get stuck on, whereas the condor detour is just a question of who’s willing to get wet.

Llama adoration: Jet & Cord, Carol & Brandy, Joe & Heidi, Louie & Michael, Monique & Shawne, Dan & Jordan, Jody & Shannon
Condor consternation: Brent & Caite, Jeff & Jordan, Steve & Allie

The next destination is the Onces Bellavista Farm. On their way there, Louie & Michael drive right past it.

The road block is to race around the farm and collect flour, butter, eggs, sugar, and milk straight from a cow to make kuchen, which Cord thinks is pie. Jordan wants Jeff to do this task so she doesn’t have to figure out what a baker’s dozen is. These cows turn out to be oddly violent, kicking three people.

Road block (in order of arrival): Cord, Carol, Heidi, Brent, Jeff, Monique (or Shawne), Steve, Jordan, Jody, Michael

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Gruta de la Virgen, a park in Puerto Varas.

Caite hopes that all the teams see she’s an intelligent person. I’m wondering what we’ve seen thus far that would have convinced them of that.

When Jordan & Jeff are lost looking for the pit stop, they find Louie & Michael, 19 miles away from the road block that they have yet to complete. They return just in time to see another team also working on the task.

First: Jet & Cord (win sailboats)
Second: Joe & Heidi
Third: Carol & Brandy
Fourth: Brent & Caite
Fifth: Monique & Shawne
Sixth: Jordan & Jeff
Seventh: Steve & Allie
Eighth: Dan & Jordan
Ninth: Louie & Michael
Eliminated: Jody & Shannon

Having brought up the rear for each of the first two episodes, Jody & Shannon have been eliminated. I guess there was an inspiring story in there, but they were just outgunned.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of The Amazing Race 16 Episode 3 Run Like Scalded Dogs! (Argentina), which airs Sunday at 8/7c on CBS.

The Amazing Race 16 Episode 1

Last season, Meghan & Cheyne were the winners. Well, at least it wasn’t the bickering brothers. 11 new teams make up The Amazing Race 16 cast, including Jeff & Jordan from Big Brother. I just hope they’re less boring a couple than they were in BB. And also Caite, the infamous Miss Teen South Carolina, who probably can’t even find the US on the map, let alone the other countries in the world she’s going to.

The first test is to get to the airport using public transportation, something that, unlike the rest of the world, America is not known for. Everybody here drives cars. Or more specifically gas guzzling SUV’s. Only the first three teams to arrive at the airport will receive a ticket on the first flight. Everyone else will be leaving almost an hour later.

The first destination is Santiago, Chile.

One group goes to the bus stop, while another group heads to the train station. Among the train station group, some get on right away, while others will have to wait 20 minutes for the next one. Those people obviously are on the last plane. Now it’s just a question of whether the bus is faster than the train.

Steve & Allie and Joe & Heidi are from California, so I’m going to assume they know what they’re doing. Also on the train with them are Dan & Jordan and Brent & Caite. Then again, Carol & Brandy are from LA. On the bus with them are Monique & Shawne, Dana & Adrian, and Jeff & Jordan.

In either case, there are three spots for four couples. The bus group arrives first. Jordan asks for tickets to China. Really now? She’s not alone, though. The cowboys think they need to get money for Brazil.

First flight (via Dallas): Monique & Shawne, Dana & Adrian, Jeff & Jordan
Second flight (via Miami): Carol & Brandy, Joe & Heidi, Steve & Allie, Dan & Jordan, Brent & Caite, Jody & Shanon, Louie & Michael, Jet & Cord

Maintenance has decided to delay the first flight due to mechanical problems. They’ve been rebooked on the Miami flight. Now everybody is even. Well, that was pointless.

After landing in Santiago, they will travel by bus 60 miles to Valparaiso, known as the San Francisco of South America due to its funiculars used to travel its steep hills.

Jet & Cord are thrown off the bus. The driver’s not about to take their Brazilian money. Those who kept their American money were better off. The three teams that arrived at the airport last continue to bring up the rear and get the last bus: Louie & Michael, Jet & Cord, and Jody & Shannon.

The road block is cable walking. Teams must balance 120 feet above the ground and walk a cable the length of a football field. They picked a windy day to do this.

Road block (in order of arrival): Caite, Jordan, Joe, Allie, Dan, Brandy, Shawne, Adrian, Louie, Shannon, Cord

Most people struggle with this task but ultimately make it across in one attempt, including Dan, who just drags himself across after falling. Adrian, however, falls, and has to start over from the beginning. He reluctantly gets going again, but not until they’re in last place.

After the road block, they’re told they may only travel by funicular. Rather than trying to figure out what that is, Brent & Caite walk down. Jeff & Jordan at least ask people.

It’s time to paint the town known for its multi-colored homes. Teams must carry paint up a hill to the house that matches their paint color. This task has the potential to send them around in circles throughout the neighborhood. Steve decides to just start painting a random house. Dan drops a brush. Assuming it will be a penalty, they search, but they don’t find it.

The pit stop for this leg of the race is Palacio Baburizza, a 90 year old chalet.

Caite & Brent are the second team to arrive, but not having followed their clue to take the funicular, they have incurred a 30 minute penalty.

Likewise, Dan & Jordan are the fourth team to arrive, but they have incurred a 15 minute penalty due to losing a paint brush. Really?

First: Jordan & Jeff (win a trip to Vancouver)
Second: Monique & Shawne
Third: Jet & Cord
Fourth: Steve & Allie
Fifth: Joe & Heidi
Sixth: Carol & Brandy
Seventh: Brent & Caite
Eighth: Dan & Jordan
Ninth: Louie & Michael
Tenth: Jody & Shannon
Eliminated: Dana & Adrian

Having fallen off the road block a second time, Adrian & Dana get a visit from Phil. All the other teams have finished, and they have been eliminated from the race.

The Amazing Race 16 Cast

The Amazing Race will be returning for season 16 on CBS Sunday February 14. The Amazing Race 16 cast consists of 11 teams of 2 competing for $1 million.

We already know Jordan & Jeff, who had a relationship (of sorts) in Big Brother 11. I’m surprised it took this long before a BB duo appeared. Not the team I’d have picked (I’d have gone with Boogie & Will), but they’re likeable enough I suppose.
