Unable to complete the final road block in The Amazing Race 16 Episode 1, Adrian & Dana were the first team eliminated from the race.
Teams depart in the order in which they arrived. Granted, the departure order is irrelevant, so much so that they don’t even bother to show it.
First: Jordan & Jeff
Second: Monique & Shawne
Third: Jet & Cord
Fourth: Steve & Allie
Fifth: Joe & Heidi
Sixth: Carol & Brandy
Seventh: Brent & Caite
Eighth: Dan & Jordan
Ninth: Louie & Michael
Tenth: Jody & Shannon
The next destination is Puerto Varas, Chile via bus. From there, they will drive, boat, and climb to their next clue. All teams end up on the same bus.
Brent & Caite are upset that Carol & Brandy view her as just a pageant queen. As if she would be on this show if she were anything else.
Carol & Brandy have decided to make an alliance with Heidi & Joe. This leads Joe to hold a spot for them, which causes animosity amongst the other teams. Interestingly, this move gets the alliance on the first bus, while those Carol & Brandy were allowed to cut in front of are stuck going a couple hours later.
For all the drama this causes, the first bus turns out to maybe not be the best move. The cowboys talk to the locals to figure this out, while Jordan & Jeff figure out themselves and talk the models into going with them. Rather, taking a bus to Temuco and then another one to their destination will be faster. That said, we’ve seen such a move backfire. Either they’re way ahead, or they’re competing for last.
First bus (via Temuco, leaves at 9:15AM): Jet & Cord, Jordan & Jeff, Brent & Caite
Second bus (direct, leaves at 5:30PM): Heidi & Joe, Carol & Brandy
Third bus (direct, leaves at 7:45PM): Steve & Allie, Louie & Michael, Monique & Shawne, Dan & Jordan, Jody & Shannon
Upon arrival in Temuco, Jet & Cord realize the other teams are on an earlier bus. They go to see if they can get on that other bus, but they’re told that the bus is in another terminal, 10 minutes away. They keep all that information under their hats, allowing the other teams to figure it out for themselves when the bus doesn’t show up. They leave to go down the street just after 6:30, and they find out that the bus is gone. Now they have to go back and hope there’s room on the 7:00 bus. Just as that bus is leaving, they pull up. Well, it’s way too late for that now. No more buses for the day. What a stupid move. They should have just stuck around and took the 7:00 bus in the first place, rather than going for the other one after it already left.
For all the time they spent on this, you’d think it would matter, but they find out that the next bus leaves at 1AM, which should put them within spitting distance of the buses that went direct, while the cowboys are likely to hit an hours of operation at some point. That some point is almost immediately. They drive to the site okay but are told they have to wait until 7:30.
The second Temuco bus ends up arriving after the first direct bus but before the second one, putting Jordan & Jeff and Brent & Caite in fourth and fifth, leaving that last direct bus battling for last.
Despite the hours of operation, the cowboys are still the first ones on the trail, but their lead has mostly evaporated while they were waiting.
Rule 1 before coming on the race: learn how to drive stick. The brothers thought this is something Jordan would enjoy, but it turns out he doesn’t seem to know completely what he’s doing. As if they’re not bad off enough due to their struggling driving capability, they also don’t know where they’re going either.
The detour is a choice between two creatures revered by the locals: llamas or condors. In llama adoration, teams must dress a llama by putting a blanket and scarf on a potentially stubborn animal. In condor consternation, teams must dress as birds and then take flight. It appears that both detours are pretty simple, although the llama one is the only one they can possibly get stuck on, whereas the condor detour is just a question of who’s willing to get wet.
Llama adoration: Jet & Cord, Carol & Brandy, Joe & Heidi, Louie & Michael, Monique & Shawne, Dan & Jordan, Jody & Shannon
Condor consternation: Brent & Caite, Jeff & Jordan, Steve & Allie
The next destination is the Onces Bellavista Farm. On their way there, Louie & Michael drive right past it.
The road block is to race around the farm and collect flour, butter, eggs, sugar, and milk straight from a cow to make kuchen, which Cord thinks is pie. Jordan wants Jeff to do this task so she doesn’t have to figure out what a baker’s dozen is. These cows turn out to be oddly violent, kicking three people.
Road block (in order of arrival): Cord, Carol, Heidi, Brent, Jeff, Monique (or Shawne), Steve, Jordan, Jody, Michael
The pit stop for this leg of the race is Gruta de la Virgen, a park in Puerto Varas.
Caite hopes that all the teams see she’s an intelligent person. I’m wondering what we’ve seen thus far that would have convinced them of that.
When Jordan & Jeff are lost looking for the pit stop, they find Louie & Michael, 19 miles away from the road block that they have yet to complete. They return just in time to see another team also working on the task.
First: Jet & Cord (win sailboats)
Second: Joe & Heidi
Third: Carol & Brandy
Fourth: Brent & Caite
Fifth: Monique & Shawne
Sixth: Jordan & Jeff
Seventh: Steve & Allie
Eighth: Dan & Jordan
Ninth: Louie & Michael
Eliminated: Jody & Shannon
Having brought up the rear for each of the first two episodes, Jody & Shannon have been eliminated. I guess there was an inspiring story in there, but they were just outgunned.
