Reality TV: Biggest Loser Recap

Tonight was the premiere of NBC’s third season of the Biggest Loser and it was a good one. I already have a few clear favorites and a few strong dislikes. I think this is going to be a really good season and we should be see a whole lotta weight loss. Now, onto the Biggest Loser Recap:

We start off with 50 contestants, one from each state in the US. However, only 14 lucky contestants will get to stay at the Biggest Loser Ranch. The remaining 36 contestants will return to their homes and continue on with exercising and dieting. At the end of the season the two Biggest Loser’s of the 36 will return and compete for the big prize.

Of course, Caroline Rhea returns as the loveable host, with trainer Bob Harper at her side, but the hardcore trainer, Jillian Michaels is no where to be seen. Instead, the newest trainer for the biggest loser is and petty blonde Kim Lions. I hope she’s got as much spunk as Jillian did, she was great!

The show starts off with all 50 contestants lined up along the top of a hill just outside the biggest loser ranch, which makes for quite a site and one heck of a cool intro piece.

It’s announced that all 50 contestants combined consume over 1-million callories a day. That’s over 2 1/2 times the average/needed amount… Wow.

All 50 contestants step onto a massive weight scale and the numbers start flying by, not slowing down until hitting the 13,000 lbs mark. The total weight of all 50 contestants, a staggering 14,384 lbs. Thats a crazy average weight of 287.68 lbs PER PERSON.

All 50 contestants are lined up and set to doing drills right away. Jumping jacks, jogging in place and taebo style stuff while both Bob Harper and Kim Lions run up and down the rows, talking to people and watching for who they want on their teams. After sizing up the contestants, the trainers select their teams and everyone was off to their first individual weigh in’s:

Bob Harper’s Blue Team:

  1. 255lbs – Tiffany, Texas
  2. 321lbs – Bobby, Tennesse
  3. 308lbs – Brian, California
  4. 236lbs – Melinda, Alabama
  5. 365lbs – Marty, Missouri
  6. 260lbs – Amy, Maryland
  7. 407lbs – Erik, New York

Kim Lion’s Red Team:

  1. 358lbs – Ken, Washington
  2. 262lbs – Kai, Alaska
  3. 404lbs – Nelson, Massachusetts
  4. 247lbs – Pam, Indiana
  5. 307lbs – Wylie, Flordia
  6. 223lbs – Heather, Utah
  7. 245lbs – Jennifer, Minnesota

All the teams come back from weigh in, everyone is feeling a big low and Bob automatically takes his blue team straight to the gym where Kim joins him with her Red Team for their very first workout.Once everyone is covered in sweat, about to tip over and ready to head for bed, the trainers make another fantastic announcement. No bed for anyone. Eeryone is sleeping in the gym, in sleeping bags, on the floor, for the first night. How much would that suck? A hard floor isn’t good for sore muscles.

The next morning comes around and it turns out the trainer’s spent the night sleeping with their teams in the gym. That’s pretty damn cool of them. Naturally, both trainer’s are up and ready to rock early, much to the dismay of the sleepy and sore contestants.

Blue team trainer bob harper takes his team out for a climb up the side of a hill so he can gauge where everyone is at, while red team trainer Kim Lions takes her crew out into the yard for some jogging, aerobics and cardio work.

Both teams go hard and work like mad, which, of course, results in a few people tossing their cookies. One of the girls from the red team is the first to toss, doing so out the closest window. Shortly there after one of the guys from the red team makes his way outside to let rip. I couldn’t held but laugh when bob asked where he was going. The conversation went something like this:

Bob: Where are you going?
Guy: To puke.
Bob: You okay?
Guy: No. *walks out door and tosses*

Okay, well, not that funny, but I swear if you were watching it you would have laughed too, really.

Once everyone is all puked out the trainers go over the diet plans with their teams. Kim’s red team doesn’t seem to be set to any strict callorie intake limit, but she does lay out exactly what they can and can’t eat, which is a lot.

Blue boy bob takes a similar approach, outlining what they need to eat and what they want to stay away from, though he gives his crew a calorie cap of 1200-1500 cals for the ladies and 1500-2000 cals for the big fellas. Not to bad at all, certainly doable.

On a side note, the 36 that didn’t get into the ranch aren’t just sent home to do what they can, they first receive dietary training, exercise training and a lot of help to get them all setup to lose weight.

Challenge #1:

The goal is for each team to run from one end of a bridge to the other, climbing over a set of progressively higher walls to get there. Reward: The winning team gets to select one player on the opposing team who will switch their total weigh loss with a player from the winning team.
Everything starts off tight, with both teams hitting and going over the first wall without a problem. Both teams hit the second wall at the same time, though the red team comes up with some difficulties and the blue team gets off to a strong lead. Though that doesn’t seem to matter as the blue team gets hung up on the third wall, giving the red team ample time to catch up. Both teams end up hitting the fourth wall at the same time, but the red team manages to power over the wall first, winning the first biggest loser challenge.

Everyone returns to the ranch and, as the blue team are working on their dinner, bob walks in and tells them to put everything away, it’s time to hit the gym before the weigh in, much to everyone dismay.

Kim, however, gives the winning red team the night off to get a good sleep, which is much needed.

The next morning Bobby and the blue team boys are in fairly low spirits, all of them are missing their families, more specifically their kids, a ton and bobby can’t help but cry for missing his daddies girl.

Both teams hit the gym bright and early for their last chance workouts. Though it seems like the blue team workout is a lot more aggressive than the red teams workout. I guess we’ll have to wait and see which pays off the best.

The red team elects to switch Jens weight with Amy’s weight. Horrible decision, you ALWAYS pick one of the guys first round, they biggest guys almost always lose the most weight in the first round.
