Vancouver: Tamarind Closing It’s Doors

I received some rather sad news last night in the form of a press release. A fantastic India restaurant on W. Broadway and Pine know as Tamarind, is closing down. Myself and the wife ordered some delivery from there one night and it was the best Indian food I’ve had in Vancouver. The saddest part is, is that they have sold the restaurant to another person/company/whatever, who wanted control of it right away and who will be changing the entire theme. As such, Tamarind Bistro closes its doors this Sunday, August 27th. If you haven’t given it a shot, go and try it before they close their doors, it’s worth every penny and more!

Oh yeah, they even have an online order form and they deliver for free! Check out Tamarind Bistro. If you’d rather go sit down and enjoy the atmosphere while you enjoy your meal, here’s a map to Tamarind.

TAMARIND TO CLOSE

(Vancouver, BC) – “It was too good an offer to decline,” says Shaffeen Jamal of the offer he accepted today to sell Tamarind, his restaurant on West Broadway. Ten days ago he was contacted and asked if he would sell the restaurant. “It came right out of nowhere. At first I wasn’t interested, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me. The lengthy construction necessitated by the car crashing through the window in January caused a decline in business. It was disheartening. When we re-opened, it was like starting from scratch all over again. This opportunity just fell in my lap and I decided I could not pass it up.”

Since his mother’s (Chef Krishna Jamal) decision to retire and travel last year, Mr. Jamal has been finding it a stretch to run both Tamarind and the family’s other business, Curry 2 U on Granville Island. The sale of Tamarind gives him the opportunity (and time) to grow Curry 2 U as well as develop other food-related projects that he has had to leave on the back-burner. “I intend to use the opportunity to grow our dinner delivery business. It had increased during the restaurant closure and so many of our regulars are now accustomed to ordering-in our food. We will continue to produce the favourite dishes from Tamarind’s menu, but only for delivery through Curry 2 U.”

The new owners insisted on immediate possession as they intend to open their restaurant by early September. ” Even though I am not comfortable with such short notice, I feel I have no choice. It’s either agree to the possession date or lose the sale. I regret we don’t have the time to properly thank our patrons and say good-bye.”

Tamarind’s last day will be this coming Sunday, August 27th . That gives you only four more nights to get your fix of Tamarind’s legendary butter chicken.
