Survivor: Marquesas Episode 5

The tribe shuffle bit her in the butt, and Sarah was voted out in Survivor: Marquesas Episode 4.

Sean’s done. He doesn’t even want to bother trying to either work or fit in with anyone.

John says that you have to be honest throughout the game. He ain’t gonna win. So he asks Gabe whether he’d lie to win the game. Gabe’s not even there to play the game. He just wants to build a society with a bunch of different people.

Maraamu is happy to have Sarah gone. They’re all getting along for a change. Maybe they can actually win for once. By complete accident, they manage to get some crab meat, which means protein for all.

The reward challenge is to gather pieces of a tiki while blindfolded. Reward is to visit the losing tribe’s beach and raid the camp. Vecepia, Sean, Rob, and Zoe sit out for Rotu. Gabe is the caller for Rotu; Kathy is the caller for Maraamu. John is the first to return with a piece. Both Gina and Paschal return with one for Maraamu. Tammy’s also got the second one for Rotu. Tammy returns with another one for Rotu, and Robert’s got two. Rotu’s up 9-7. John returns with the last one for Rotu, or at least that’s what Gabe thinks anyway. Probst tells him there’s one more left. As he’s wondering where the remaining piece is, Maraamu gets their last piece and is working on the puzzle. Gabe finally figures out where the last piece is, but it’s too late. Maraamu wins reward. That was different.

They have two minutes to decide what they want to take, with the exception of one knife, one cooking pot, one water container, the magnifying glass, and any personal items. They take a massive amount of supplies. It’s not just three items like usual. It’s whatever they can get their hands on. This is obscene. The tribe that wins one challenge gets to catch up because of that one challenge, erasing everything the others have earned over weeks of winning. This marks Gina’s first win in 13 days, and she’s got blankets, pillows, lanterns, and another water jug to show for it.

Gabriel is trying to get along with the new members of Rotu. Not a feeling shared by the other four. John keeps pushing and pushing Gabe for an answer, an answer that’s not forthcoming, so he plans to vote him out. John makes a final four alliance with the other members of old Rotu.

The immunity challenge is yet another challenge that requires no physical strength at all, so it’s again something Maraamu may be able to win. It’s the signal challenge. They intend to use the blankets that they got in the lame raid. Gina wants to win because she wants one of her former tribemates gone. If you turn on your tribe that easily, what are the odds anyone’s going to trust you, since you can just do the same to them? Robert, John, Gabe, and Tammy sit out for Rotu. Robert’s not happy with the people he’s stuck depending on. They’ve built a black sign. You really think a ship’s going to see black? Granted, it’s not like they have white blankets any more. The captain’s attention wouldn’t be attracted by Rotu’s signal. It goes without saying, but Maraamu wins immunity. Whoever planned the raid challenge right before this challenge should have thought about what they were doing. One challenge win directly resulted in the other win.

John’s paranoid that the other three will join Gabe in a vote to create a tie, so he goes to Sean to offer him a deal. His offer to him: I’ll get you to the merge. Just to the merge? If I’m Sean, I’m going to deliberately try to force a tie. That’s exactly what Sean plans to do. John would deserve to be voted out for being an idiot and not just keeping this plan to himself. In addition to that, by voting Gabe out, he’s failed to clear this plan with the three ex-Rotu on the other island. 4 is not a big enough alliance to win with. The only problem with getting Gabe on their side is that he’s really not playing the game.

By a unanimous vote, Gabe has been voted off the island. He had a chance to save himself, but he failed to bother with it. He got out before he had to play the game, so he’s fine with being eliminated.

At the voting booth, Rob’s got a message for John: he knows exactly what he’s doing, and first chance he gets, he’s gonna get him.

Survivor: Marquesas Episode 4

The numbers game caught up to Hunter, and he was voted out in Survivor: Marquesas Episode 3.

Rather than being grateful for still being in the game, Gina says she’s surprised she’s still there and doesn’t understand why they’d vote out one of their strongest members. Cut off the head of the snake, and that solves your problem with the snake. While Hunter was a very good contributor to camp, he didn’t seem to understand that there’s more to Survivor than surviving the elements.

The other tribe is just peachy. They think of themselves as a family.

The tribes meet Jeff for… an activity… of sorts. Pick a disc at random. I smell a tribe shuffle.

Rotu: Zoe, Gabe, John, Vecepia, Rob, Sean, Robert, Tammy
Maraamu: Gina, Neleh, Kathy, Sarah, Paschal

Neleh, Vecepia, Rob, Kathy, Sean, and Paschal switch tribes. With a group of all women and Pappy, new Maraamu is going to be hurting if the challenge is anything physical. Paschal and Neleh have managed to stick together. Boston Rob’s still got his buddy Sean, but he’s left without a woman, as Sarah is going to have to fend for herself. Gina’s luck probably improved the most, since she was probably the next to go if her old tribe lost again. However, it’s not a huge step in the right direction because new Maraamu consists of 3 ex-Rotu members to 2 ex-Maraamu members. New Rotu, meanwhile, consists of 3 ex-Maraamu members compared to 5 ex-Rotu members.

The big change for the new members of Rotu is that they’re going to be expected to work more and joke less, and unlike the scenario with Hunter, they’re going to find it difficult to rally the numbers.

It takes little (no) prodding to get Gina to reveal the cracks within her old tribe. Like Frank from Africa, she’s probably just shooting herself in the foot.

Tammy’s plan: get rid of Sean and Rob first vote if they decide not to work. I don’t know. Looks to me like they’ve been working a lot.

Gina hopes that Kathy’s aggressiveness will wear on Neleh and Paschal.

Sean has no plans to be kissing butt. He tells Gabe he’s not going to overexert himself knowing he’s probably the next to go anyway, and the fact that Gabe seems to want to respond to this statement doesn’t phase him anyway because he just keeps rambling. His only hope is to just win the next couple challenges and wait for the merge. Vecepia has no intention of participating in this drama. She’s the next logical boot, but Sean’s mouth may well be his downfall.

Kathy could see Rotu backing off on the challenge and allowing Maraamu to win just so they can get rid of someone. I don’t know that it really matters because Rotu’s got the numbers on both new tribes, an unusual situation that means someone from ex-Maraamu is probably going home regardless.

The immunity challenge is to unscramble a woven tapestry. Sean, John, and Rob sit out for Rotu. Rotu looks like they’re getting it, but Maraamu is just standing around looking confused. Working together well, Rotu wins immunity.

It’s safe to say that Sarah’s gone. Without Rob to protect her, it was only a matter of time, and she’s just not blending with anyone on her tribe. Her only hope is that Kathy being overbearing will be her undoing, but it just wouldn’t be a wise move to give up the numbers.

By a unanimous vote, Sarah has been voted off the island. If not for the shuffle, she probably could have gotten pretty far despite her limited skill set.

Survivor: Marquesas Episode 3

Hunter and Gina were very vocal in their complaints about the other members of the tribe not doing enough, but what they failed to do was get the numbers on their side, so Patricia was voted out in Survivor: Marquesas Episode 2.

Gina pretends that what Sarah said at tribal council caused her to vote for her. Yeah, so I guess it caused both Hunter and Patricia to vote the same way and there was no voting block?

Over on Rotu, they’ve had a rainy night, so their plan for the day is to improve the shelter.

Kathy is getting along better with her tribe than she had been before. She’ll just go with the flow and be a bit more low key than she had been.

Paschal has earned the nickname Pappy from Gabe, while Neleh has been called Sweet Pea just in general. Both of them have bonded and will end up as the Elisabeth and Rodger of the season.

While out snorkeling, John lands on top of a sea urchin and gets a bunch of needles in his hand. He needs somebody to pee on his hand. Paschal has a little performance anxiety, so Kathy drops her drawers.

Maraamu, after their tribal council last night, is trying to rebond with a morning show. Whatever they say about the rain having washed away the bad, it’s still a tribe divided.

For their next challenge, they will have to construct a raft strong enough to carry all of them and some supplies they will pick up along the way. Jeff brings them some bamboo and rope, and they can use whatever else they can find. As they’re unloading the wood, Robert’s foot gets sliced up. It’s a good thing John is a registered nurse and that Robert has 9 more toes on him. Gabriel comes up with the boat design for his team, and he and Robert put that plan into action, with Robert having no intention of quitting just because he’s injured. On the other side, both Hunter and Rob both want to take control of the project. They opt for Hunter’s plan for building a bulky boat, not worrying about whether they have to end up carrying it eventually or not. Rob allows Hunter to get his way because although he’d like to be the big man, he’d rather see someone else keep running his mouth until it sinks him.

John’s finger has been opened up again. He got bit by an eel. His biggest concern: will how much he can contribute to the tribe decrease?

Hunter’s tired of the complaining coming from his tribe. He won’t say anything, but he doesn’t like these people. Good luck getting to the end if you feel that way.

The tribes arrive at the reward challenge on their rafts. The challenge is a race to grab 5 containers anchored to the bottom of the ocean floor, then go back to where they started. Reward is a choice between comfort (blankets, pillows, and three lanterns with fuel) or sustenance (rice). Neleh and Paschal sit out for Rotu. Both tribes are fairly even on their first box, although Maraamu’s boat looks like it may lack seaworthiness. They continue forward and are the first to arrive at box 4, though. It’s dead even when they get to box 5, so it’ll be a matter of who can paddle faster. In a close race, Rotu wins reward. Again. They choose comfort.

The other tribe certainly isn’t bigger, stronger, or faster. Their problem is that they’re not a real team. Hunter blames it on the lack of work ethics from the others. This broken record is as much a part of the problem as anything his teammates may or may not be bringing to the table. Obviously, nobody is responding to his criticism, but he just keeps pushing anyway.

The immunity challenge is a coconut maze race. First tribe to get all three coconuts through the maze wins. They will have one person on each corner and a caller telling them what to do. The game only requires 5. Tammy, John, and Robert sit out for Rotu. Gina sits out for Maraamu. Maraamu is the first to score a point. Rotu ties it at 1. Maraamu retakes the lead 2-1. Rotu’s quite a bit more behind, but it is tied at 2. Somehow, Rotu erases the lead and wins immunity with Maraamu hovering over the hole but unable to make it in. This marks 5 challenges in a row.

Hunter wants to go after Sean, but he’ll need to get some more votes, so he goes to Rob.

Rob’s just playing the game. He doesn’t care how strong his team is, just as long as they obey. Fear keeps people loyal. If they have something to lose, they’ll do what you say. That’s straight out of The Godfather. It’s true.

By a vote of 4-2, Hunter has been voted off the island. The tribe is apparently hoping that being talked down to less will help them more than his physical strength and contributions at camp.

Survivor: Marquesas Episode 2

Peter sunk himself by being weird in Survivor: Marquesas Episode 1.

Rotu is getting close. Well, except for Kathy, who sleeps by herself near the fire.

Robert is struggling and has been pretty sick due to lack of food. He is the second Rob to come up with the plan to catch a pig or chicken. John has created a pig snare, which he believes will get him to the final four if it works.

Maraamu starts off every day with a morning show, a little break from the reality of the situation.

Patricia has changed since the last tribal council, and she’s turned into a workaholic contributing to camp. She may be able to buy herself a little while longer. However, as time goes by, her helpfulness starts to get on everybody’s nerves. They’re tired of listening to her talk.

John has also created a shrimp trap, and this works pretty quickly. He’s thrilled with himself, which is why he soon gets upset with Kathy. She’s been off on her own for a while, and she’s managed to dig up some shells. Perhaps not the most appealing food, but at least it’s protein. No pats on the back for her, though.

Sean has decided that the others on his tribe are going to be racially motivated in this game. Not that they’ve given him any reason to believe so. Their actual problem with him is his laziness.

Rob and Sarah are attached at the hip, which Hunter views as a problem. They’d get more out of Rob if they got rid of her. Rob realizes he’s got an extra vote, but he also has to be on the look out for her because she’s not really doing much.

Kathy has found some more goodies. In order for them to get that food, they have to listen to her first. Gabe complains. He’s not interested in food, shelter, or water. He wants to get to know people first. Nonetheless, he agrees to finally build a functional shelter.

The reward challenge is to remove rocks from boats underwater and bring them up to sail them to shore. Reward is masks, snorkel, and fins. Robert sits out for Rotu. Most people are getting one or two rocks at a time, if that. Gabe gets 19 rocks at once, potentially a huge boost for Rotu. They are, indeed, the first tribe to be able to flip over their boat. Led by Hunter and Boston Rob, Maraamu is not far behind. Rotu hops in their boat first as Maraamu bails water for perhaps too long. Having led the whole way, Rotu wins reward.

Vecepia, Patricia, and Sarah have been working on palm fronds to finish their roof and protect them from the rain. Sarah’s been saying for two days they need to get this finished. Now that Hunter says it, people finally start to listen. Gina says this is her fault because if she wanted it done, she should have done it herself.

Gross food challenge time. A Marquesan delicacy, fafaru, has been set out for them. It’s made by putting parts of various sea creatures in water for three days and letting it rot. Then the marinade is put on slices of fish and put in the hot sun for a couple hours. Shouldn’t a delicacy be something tough to come by? Zoe and Hunter are fine. Neleh and Patricia are also good, with Neleh barely keeping it down. Paschal and Sarah are next and do fine. Vecepia and Kathy go next and also are good. Sean and Robert both struggle their way through it. Gina and Tammy are okay. John makes it through with difficulty, but not as much difficulty as Boston Rob, who just finishes before Probst stops counting to 5. Hunter is once again fine, and so is Gabe. Since it’s a tie, they will select two people to break the tie. Rotu picks Boston Rob. Maraamu selects Neleh. With Rob having the most difficulty, Neleh wins immunity for Rotu.

Sean wants to target Sarah because he feels it’s either him or her. Rob, however, thinks they shot themselves in the foot last time by not getting rid of Patricia.

Sarah doesn’t want to expend too much energy at camp because it will weaken her for the challenges. Gina, however, doesn’t like that someone isn’t working hard enough at camp so she will be weaker at challenges because she has to pick up the slack.

Survivor: Marquesas Episode 1

After realizing that their previous destination, while exotic, was a dustbowl, it’s time to go back to the beach. 16 new castaways are heading to the Marquesas Islands, located in French Polynesia in the south Pacific Ocean.

The Survivor: Marquesas cast consists of:

Gabriel Cade
Gina Crews
Hunter Ellis
John Carroll
Kathy Vavrick-O’Brien
Neleh Dennis
Paschal English
Patricia Jackson
Peter Harkey
Rob Mariano
Robert DeCanio
Sarah Jones
Sean Rector
Tammy Leitner
Vecepia Towery
Zoe Zanidakis

Kathy and Boston Rob notwithstanding, it’s a pretty lackluster lineup. Although there are some interesting people here, they will struggle to strategize their way out of a paper bag.

We see somebody already sick on the ship ride over. A bad sign. The survivors will be given only the barest of essentials: no food, two machetes, two cooking pots, two empty water containers, one frying pan, one filet knife, and one magnifying glass (which should be sufficient to allow them to get fire).

Maraamu Tribe (Yellow): Gina, Sean, Sarah, Rob, Vecepia, Peter, Patricia, Hunter
Rotu Tribe (Blue): Kathy, Gabriel, Tammy, Paschal, John, Neleh, Zoe, Robert

As the rest of Maraamu paddles their way to shore, Sarah is merely saying stroke, stroke, kick, kick. Her arrival is almost like Cleopatra, as the servants take her to her home.

When he arrives, Sean immediately collapses on the beach. Not because he’s exhausted but because he wants to give thanks to God for getting him there. It’s a miracle. He gets Peter to baptize him in the water, or so it appears to Boston Rob.

Rotu lands late, and the sun is not cooperating. Trying to start a fire will be futile. So, at Kathy’s suggestion, they try to make it the old fashioned way, always a great big waste of time. Nobody appreciates her taking control.

Over on the other side, Hunter also takes control. A few people on the tribe are okay with this, but Sean’s there to represent Harlem, which apparently means he won’t listen to anyone else.

Unlike Rotu, Maraamu is successful at lighting fire the first night, thanks to the magnifying glass.

If she wins, Sarah wants a monkey.

Vecepia is concerned about Sarah using her body to attract the right person and take her a long way in this game. Gina, likewise, is concerned. First target: Boston Rob.

Kathy didn’t want to come into this being the blonde bitchy person. Well, that’s how things are starting off.

Unlike the mud they were drinking last season, these survivors (at least Rotu anyway) get themselves a waterfall, useful to play in and to get fresh water from.

They’re also starting to find out why they were not given any rations. One tribe has already found grapefruit, while the other tribe finds tarot root. Not satisfied with these foods, however, Boston Rob wants to try to capture a chicken or a pig. Too bad roosters can fly.

Hunter gives Rob a lecture. Trying to get food is a luxury that he should not be focusing on. Rob falls in line without arguing.

Kathy insists on getting fire right away. This leads to an argument. John says he’s too tired to make fire. In order to make up for this outburst, John agrees it’s time to start a fire. Now both tribes have fire.

Sean convinces Peter that he should just chill out for a while, something Sean is apparently good at doing. Somehow, this leads to a discussion with the tribe about how Peter wants to master every hole in his body. He’s creeping people out.

When they arrive at the challenge, Probst says it’s good they’ve got fire because they’re getting no fire help from them at all at any time of any kind, except for those magnifying glasses they had from day one, although those won’t be of any use in the rain, so they’d better get themselves a backup plan.

Each tribe gets an outrigger canoe with two torches. They’ll go out to the center wok and turn around and start lighting their woks. When they return to the beach, they will sprint on rocky terrain and light three more torches, then return their canoes to their stands. The canoes weigh about 300 pounds dry. Rotu is the first to get fire. Rotu still leads when they return to the beach, and they’ve got a pretty large gap over Maraamu. It’s never in question, but Rotu wins immunity.

Patricia feels vulnerable because she realizes she’s older and overweight.

Peter, however, is rubbing people the wrong way. Apparently, Gina considers it offensive for him to discuss voting strategy. Sarah is also against him beause he’s weird and could be up to something.

Sean’s thinking of voting against Sarah because she only offers two floating devices to help them out and nothing more.
