So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Episode 2

So You Think You Can Dance 5 Episode 1 saved the best for last with the performances of Brandon Bryant and Natalie Reid, who were eliminated at the end of Vegas last season, closing out the night. Additionally, we saw Maksim Kapitannikov, Nobuya Nagahama, Annie Taylor, Igor Zabrodin, Chimezie Nwosu, Kayla Radomski, and Nigel’s homophobia.

Tonight we start off in Miami, where someone will hopefully tell Cat to not try speaking in Spanish any more. Tyce Diorio will be joining Mary and Nigel.

Tony Riendeau is apparently auditioning for an 80s movie. His dance style: Tony style. Nigel appreciates that he fell, picked himself up, dusted himself off, and continued making a fool of himself. Meanwhile, I’m wondering when this Tyce guy will stop talking because he’s starting to sound like a mean Paula Abdul. Still not content with the camera time he’s received thus far, Tony asks for a medic because he’s just that tired.

Priscilla Marrero says that dance is a big part of her culture. Nigel enjoyed every moment of it. Tyce feels so happy to be a dancer after that performance. She will be going to Vegas.

Janette Manrara and Romulo Villaverde danced together last year. Janette made it to Vegas where she was cut, while Romulo was cut immediately. They get a scream from Mary. Because he’s afraid of her, Nigel will be sending them both to Vegas.

Twins Jennifer and Jessica Guadix are hip hop dancers, or at least that’s what they think they are. Nigel says that they’ve never had synchronized dancing on the show before. Mary responds that they still haven’t.

Joseph Smith plans to shwam and/or shwizam the judges. He’s not entirely clear whether that’s a good thing or not, but either way he says it, it sounds stupid. Nigel loved the humor and footwork. Tyce was sort of half impressed. Joseph will be going to choreography, where he is sent through to Vegas.

Wislande Letang is looking to put the hoochie into hoochie mama. Tyce wants to watch but has to divert his eyes. Mary is not sure what she was doing on that stage. Nigel says that she was doing what little girls do when they start dancing. She wants them to teach her how to dance.

Erik “Silky” Moore is a tap dancer who already has a stupid nickname. He hopes to bring tap back because not a lot of people do it any more. Nigel liked that there was everything there but the kitchen sink. Mary calls him one of the best dancers of the day. He’s going to Vegas.

Paris Torres was Miss Washington. Nigel thought her dancing was fabulous. Mary agrees. Tyce, however, thinks she’s focusing too much on her legs and feet and leaving the performance behind. He wants to see her do choreography, but the other two vote her through to Vegas.

Geo Smith is hoping to join the party, feathers and all. Mary was entertained, despite having dug her fingers into Nigel when Geo jumped out into the audience. They will have him do the choreography.

Talia Rickards has not auditioned in two years since her husband of four years died in a motorcycle accident. Nigel is worried about her facial movements and didn’t feel there was enough there for him. Mary liked the potential, despite the lack of substance. Mary and Nigel will let her go to choreography, but Tyce doesn’t think it’s enough.

Geo is going to Vegas, and Talia will be joining him.

The next stop is Memphis. Lil C is the guest judge there.

Marico Flake, a police officer assigned to deal with people who are “having a good time,” does Memphis juking. Nigel enjoyed the style, which has been kept underground for 20 years. Lil C uses some of that in his routines and enjoyed the performance. He will be going to Vegas.

Dustin Dorough is wearing a bandana, which is a bad sign in itself. He says that his cousin is one of the Backstreet Boys. He should leave the dancing to his cousin. Nigel calls him delusional. That was not hip hop. In Dustin’s defense, he just got over the flu (presumably not swine) and bronchitis, and he couldn’t walk upstairs 5 days ago. Did he have hemorrhoids as well? Or perhaps a dead dog?

Chris Carrozzo is obviously here just to waste our time. It would be nice if this were at least funny or in some other way entertaining. Chris says he’s ready to go home before the judging is even halfway done. Good. Go away.

Caitlin Kinney is following in her sister Megan’s footsteps after she got a ticket to Vegas in Miami. She’s superb for 5 years of training and for someone who had hip reconstruction. She’s going to Vegas.

Anna Dunn’s father killed himself last year. She uses dancing as her outlet because she can’t really talk about it (except on national TV). Nigel says that she’s so overchoreographed and needs to calm it down. Mary loved everything except the constant head bouncing. Lil C wants her to connect with her pain. She advances to choreography.

Travis Prokop is from Texico, New Mexico, where his dad coaches high school football. He opted to dance instead, which his father supports. Nigel wants to see him strengthen up his body because he’s so big. Otherwise, he’s got potential. He will stick around for the choreography.

Ryan Kasprzak’s younger brother Evan Kasprzak made it to the last day of Vegas last year before being cut. The judges enjoyed his dancing but are concerned about his potential with other styles. Regardless, he’s obviously going back to Vegas.

Another set of twin sisters Lauren and Lydia Guerra are up next. Nigel thinks that, if the two of them were combined, they’d make a great dancer. One of them is powerful, while the other gives more performance. They will proceed to choreography.

Lastly, Evan’s brother Ryan Kasprzak does a tap dancing routine. When he’s not tapping, he does a bunch of other styles and also choreographed his brother’s routine. Nigel wants to see him do the choreography, but Lil C and Mary will send him to Vegas.

Lauren, the performing twin, will go to Vegas. Anna Dunn will also be going there. Travis has made it as well. Lydia, the more powerful of the two twins, will be joining her sister.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Episode 1

So You Think You Can Dance is back again, and tonight kicks off the auditions that will take place in New York, Miami, LA, Denver, Memphis, and Seattle. The first stop will be New York City.

Maksim Kapitannikov is dancing with Fayina from season 3. Nigel liked that there wasn’t anything false about the routine. Mary found it hard to not watch Fayina, but Maksim’s good on his own. He moves on to the choreography.

Nobuya Nagahama believes he’s the Japanese hip hop Madonna, or something. Nigel compares him to Hilty and Bosch, which is apparently a good thing, but he fears that he won’t be able to do anything other than locking. Nobuya responds that he doesn’t like to do any other kind of dancing. Wrong show, then, dude. He’ll be doing the choreography.

Lauren Gottlieb from season three is doing the choreography for those who have advanced to that round.

Maksim advances to Vegas. Nobuya also advances.

Arielle Taylor went to Vegas in season 3 when she was still in high school. Nigel thinks she’s great and hopes she’s learned to not contain herself and instead use the whole stage. She’s got a golden ticket.

Thomas Martin will be dancing bolero with his partner. When he was younger, he was the six-time national men’s baton twirling champion, which he says fully convinced it’s true. Mary calls it basic beginning bronze level dancing. She’s being kind.

Mina Estrina and Igor Zabrodin do Latin ballroom dancing. They will do a piece of their chacha with a secret trick at the end, in which he spins her around in circles for an impressive amount of time. Nigel thinks they make a great couple and look fabulous. Nice style, good feet, good arms and hands. Mary screams. How will they do without each other as partners? They will stick around for the choreography.

Kellen Stancil is dancing with an umbrella. It’s bad luck to have one of those things open indoors, but it works for Kellen, who’s got a good story to go along with the dance. The umbrella represents his aunt, who he recently lost. He gets a ticket to Vegas.

Chimezie Nwosu, who probably doesn’t want people to call him Chikezie, is a hip hop dancer. The choreography is a lot of fun. He will be back for the choreography.

Igor goes to Vegas, but Mina won’t be joining him. Chimezie will also go to Vegas.

From New York, they head to the mountains of Denver. Sonya Tayeh joins Nigel and Mary.

Kayla Radomski lives with her grandparents to save money so she can take the expensive dance lessons. Nigel says she brought everything that could be asked of her. Not much he didn’t like. Sonya can’t say enough good things. Kayla is going to Vegas.

Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel are same sex ballroom dancing partners. Mitchel, who says he’s straight, whereas Misha is gay, used to have a female dancing partner, but it didn’t work out, so now it’s raining men. The routine looks good until Mitch trips and falls on his partner. Nigel doesn’t know what to say, and he’s a bit of a homophobe. Just dancing alone, though, he thinks they’re both good. Mary thinks the technique needs a lot of work because they switch in and out of lead and not lead. The judges want to see them dancing with girls.

Mitchel has been cut, and Misha has been as well.

Allison Moist is apparently auditioning to play the cowardly lion in Star Wars: The Musical. She’s light years away from where she needs to be.

Elias Holloway is popping with his brother, who will probably be on the show again when he’s old enough. Nigel found it extremely entertaining. Mary calls it about the cutest thing she’s seen, and the camera will love him. He’s going to choreography.

Natalie Reid was cut on the final day of Vegas last year, as her roommate Katee Shean advanced despite admitting to being a quitter. It’s pretty obvious she will be advancing straight back there again. Sonya, who was jumping up and down during the performance, is speechless. Mary knows she will go the distance this time.

Brandon Bryant was also cut on the final day of Vegas, losing out to Gev Manoukian. As with Natalie, he will obviously sail through. Mary’s in tears after the performance.

Elias has been cut because he needs more training, but he will be back next year.

So You Think You Can Dance 4 Episode 3

The first stop is Charleston. Tice D’Orio is the guest judge there.

Jeremiah Hughes, despite a near fall, looks to be one of the stronger contemporary dancers. He easily gets through to Vegas.

Syiddah King has particularly noticeable socks. She’s been “if you want to call it dancing” forever. She’s over but okay with it. Nigel doesn’t think she’s listening. She isn’t.

Anthony Hart gets shot down for not showing enough talent. His brother Antwain Hart, however, has potential. Antwain says he would prefer that his brother be there instead of him and that Anthony was just nervous. Nigel agrees to let them dance together. With the routine they do together, both prove to be stronger than they’d originally showed. Both go through to choreography. The brothers survive this and are headed to Vegas.

Abigail Thurman doesn’t even need to dance for Tice to be afraid. Her choice of tights is enough for him to know it’ll be a disaster. She takes Nigel covering his face as a hint that she needs to stop, admitting she sucks as a dancer.

Breaker BJ Harris arrived via a fundraiser from his performing arts school. The judges are thrilled with his performance but want him to go through choreography to see if he can do anything else.

A perky Courtney Galiano wants Mary to scream for her. She has the look of a star and heads to Vegas with the support of her grandparents.

Cross dresser Jason Looney (aka Betty Wallace) is neither a good dancer nor a good cross dresser. The judges are insulted and want to slap him upside the head.

Claire Callaway auditioned in Charleston in season 2 and made it to Vegas. She injured herself before Vegas and then took some time off after she had a baby. She looks damn good for someone with a young daughter, but Tice is unconvinced that she’s a good dancer. Mary and Nigel suggest the bar has been raised. They’re willing to let her go through to the choreography, though.

BJ is cut. Claire is going to Vegas.

Dan Karaty joins Nigel and Mary in Washington DC.

Megan Campbell is first on stage. This is the first time she’s ever auditioned, but Mary doesn’t want to see choreography… she wants her to go straight to Vegas.

Dancing Derrick is a disaster waiting to happen. This is the guy who last year had to get oxygen. He sucks as bad as he did last year, but at least he’s entertaining. He looks pretty good at charades, though. He’ll be back next year whether Nigel’s bored with him or not.

Markus Shields is dancing in memory of his mother. He’s not happy with his dancing, and he doesn’t hide it at all. The judges, who didn’t even notice that he messed anything up, are letting him go through to the choreography. Markus makes some minimal effort to smile based on that news.

Markus Smith and Deonna Ball dance DC swing. We know before they begin that they’re good, and they don’t disappoint. They’re going to choreography.

Deonna Ball won’t be going to Vegas. Her partner Markus is also cut. The other Markus is headed to Vegas, but he’s going to have trouble if he remains as laid back as he is.

Brandon Bryant auditioned in season one but had to quit because he lied about his age. Now that he’s actually 18, he’s back. Nigel says he’s one of the best, Mary screams, and Dan is blown away.

Phucdat Ngyuen (aka the atomic goofball) is dressed up like a stick of Juicy Fruit. He has a message that nerds are cool. The judges pass him through to choreography.

Anthony Bryant is another person returning from a previous season. He’s pretty impressed with himself, and he’s wearing camouflage to show he’s not feminine. Nigel likes his technique but believes something’s missing. Mary agrees. Dan thinks we’ve seen this before. Despite his technique, they’re sending him to choreography.

Phucdat isn’t going to Vegas. Anthony is also not going to Vegas. So with that he gives us an audition for an acting gig.

So You Think You Can Dance 4 Episode 2

The producers have decided to stop by Salt Lake City, Utah for some reason. Guest judge Mandy Moore (not the one from Chasing Liberty) joins Nigel and Mary.

Chelsie Hightower has a sad story about how her family lost a house and several cars… but she could still dance. The judges find her hot. Mary loves her legs. She’s going to Vegas.

Michael Moore is from a Native American dancing family, though he himself prefers something more modern. Nigel wants him to switch to decaf. He admits he’s bad.

Figure skater Gev Manukyan, originally from Kazakhstan, breakdances on ice. With his unique style, they’re letting him go to the choreography.

Lindsey Judkins comes on immediately after Gev, and she receives a good response from the judges as well. Mary thinks she’s cute. Mandy is concerned she’s too one dimensional. Nonetheless, she’s going straight to Vegas.

Stay-at-home mom Nicole Downard shows up at the auditions with her four children. She’s got plans just in case she gets to Vegas, but we know within about two moves she doesn’t have to worry about finding a sitter.

Kelli Baker’s mom Bonnie Story was one of the choreographers in High School Musical. Kelli starred as Lea in High School Musical 2 (I’m assuming that’s an actual part). She’s able to live up to the build up. Nigel calls her one of the best dancers this season. Mary says wow. Mandy’s got goose bumps. She gets through to Vegas.

Naomie Christensen gets her two minutes of fame. That’s enough of that. She claims she was doing kind of a jazz thing and is unsure what planet she’s on. The judges want to know where Ashton Kutcher is while they’re being Punk’d.

Ryann Race is a strip club DJ. Whether he goes to Vegas or not, he’s gonna be having some fun. Nigel likes his unique comic book-like style. He’ll be going to the choreography, starting off by acting like he’s stretching.

Matt Dorame impresses the judges. If he loses his shorts, Nigel will give him a ticket to Vegas.

Kortney Pearson and Michelle Stringham are two blonde friends who got married and divorced about the same time. Kortney is finally back after 5 years off, but she’ll need to work on it if she wants another shot, though she gets through to the choreography regardless. Michelle likewise has given up dancing for 5 years, but they’re more impressed with her, despite the slipping in her socks. She’s also going through to choreography.

Michelle is going to Vegas. Kortney, likewise, gets through to the next round. Ryann knows he crashed and burned, but he doesn’t have to go back to the strip club because he’s made it through as well.

The next stop is Dallas. Adam Shankman is the guest judge in Dallas.

Brian Davidson doesn’t get nervous because it doesn’t matter since he knows he sucks. This isn’t even interesting.

Chad Agnor is a full contact fighter trainer and is also a ballroom dance instructor. He injures himself while warming up but will dance anyway. Nigel warns him not to continue because it’s dangerous. Despite the positive attitude, he’s been rejected, but he’ll be back next year.

Paige Jones believes she’s a real life Barbie doll. Her dance instructor has taught her how to walk and wave. Nigel likes her but doesn’t like the competition style of dance. The other judges fall in line but put her through to choreography.

Joshuah Allen turns out to be one of the better dancers. Nigel believes he could easily fight for his life. Mary’s in love. He goes to choreography.

Cassidy Corder says she can throw down. Nigel calls it one of the worst auditions they’ve seen. It wasn’t quite that bad, but I think they mostly want her to dance with a pole.

Arielle Coker managed to rope John Dix into dancing with her. He’s mostly just there so she has something to jump on, but she does a great job. Arielle goes straight through, but John will be going to choreography.

Steven Arner starts off chair dancing. Should have just stayed in the chair. Nigel tries to convince him he sucked, but he’s not buying. Adam wants him to not sleepwalk on stage again. Mary calls him delusional then throws him out.

John doesn’t get through to Vegas. Paige can keep smiling as she heads to Vegas, and Joshuah also goes through.
