America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 9

Last week on America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 8, we got a look at dancers Destined 2 Be, singer/harp player Rashida Jolley, college roommates Matt and Anthony, and returning singer/piano player Mia Boostrom. Tonight it’s the Myspace auditions.

El Vegas (real name Jerry Katz) is a few years older than 25 (times two). He sings American Trilogy by Elvis. Elvis is rolling over in his grave, assuming he’s actually dead. Sharon wants to know what went wrong. Hoff wanted to see what was going to happen. He still doesn’t know what happened.

High school student Ashley Groff is a singer. Well, that’s how she introduces herself anyway. Somebody twisted started a Myspace fan club for her, and she’s now got 8,000 friends who enjoy what she calls her “vocalist screamer” style. Is she like auditioning for a horror movie or something? That was not human. Hoff wants to know about the exorcist. Piers is afraid. Nick just hopes there’s a priest nearby.

Ishaara, a group of Bollywood dancers ages 18-23, comes out and looks like the real deal. Piers thought that was unbelievably exciting to watch because it’s original and fresh.

Based on their introduction, I was assuming Duo Design are from a galaxy far, far away, but it just turns out they’re from Poland (and Myspace). One guy hops on the other and balances on him with his hands. Piers buzzes. He thinks they’re weird, though oddly compelling. Sharon thought it was fabulous. Hoff viewed them as alien cool. Too weird for Piers, but the other two let them through.

Eddie Green believes he’s got fans and talent. Outlook not good. The name of his act is Eddie and the Puppet Divas. Yeah, still not good. He leaves the stage and returns with Tina Turner, dancing with her to Proud Mary. Piers thinks the horror and bemusement on the puppet’s face say it all.

Marcus Terell and The Serenades are longtime friends who are coming together as a group for the first time. They sing Hit the Road Jack. Piers has a request. Dump the girls because they’re dragging down Marcus. Sue Son agreed with this request from the judges on Britain’s Got Talent, where Piers is also a judge, which allowed her to make it to the semifinals. Marcus refuses to go along. Sharon agrees the girls are not up to par, but does think that they can be fixed.

Charles DeWayne Dorsey, Jr. is a singer and piano player. He sings Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours by Stevie Wonder. Sharon likes that he’s ticked all the right boxes, a phrase most Americans have only ever heard before from Simon on American Idol, but it’s a good thing. Piers thinks he may be a bit of a star.

Vanessa, aka Heavy Vee, is a “natural born dancer.” We’ve been seeing a trend this season that the final act of the night is very good. Well, the streak is over. Piers explains that the point of dancing is to move around, more than three inches. Nick thinks he knows what the problem is. She needs a partner. So what if he dances with her? They both need to be voted off the island.

America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 8

Last night was busier than most as far as actual talent, as America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 7 brought us Tallan Latz, the Platt brothers, and the Spiritual Harmonizers.

Chris Kegley (aka Keg, the Lone Ranger of rock) plans to be like the great rockers of Seattle. Well, his hairstyle is lost in the 80s anyway. I… don’t get it. Why did he only get one X? Piers says he’s the Lone Ranger of rock because nobody wants to play with him. Nobody actually wants to see a one man rock band either.

Kari Callin has been singing for 40 years. Because of the way she looks, nobody believes she’s a singer, but she wants to prove it for herself. She sings Somewhere from West Side Story, and she has potential. Sharon got goose bumps. Piers thinks she has an amazing voice.

A group of students named Reality have that creepy happy song playing in the background, but that’s usually a good sign. They sing Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat from Guys and Dolls. They actually seem talented, but that arrangement just didn’t work. Sharon wants them to go to a retirement home with their routine.

Destined 2 Be are dancers from Indiana. Hoff thought the choreography was terrific. Sharon thinks they have great heart and a great future.

Rashida Jolley sings and plays harp, which she learned from her late father. She performs Killing Me Softly by Lauryn Hill. Not sure what potential the instrument choice has, but her voice is great. Although Sharon thinks she’s beautiful, sings beautifully, and plays beautifully, she’s not sure whether it all works together. Piers thought she made the harp quite sexy.

College roommates Matt and Anthony (no group name) formed a song and dance act when they finally started talking to each other a few months after they began rooming together. Matt plays guitar while Anthony tap dances. Individually, this is quite good, but I’m struggling to see how it goes together. Best tap dancing Hoff has ever seen. Piers has never seen anything quite like that before.

Piano player and singer Mia Boostrom was cut in Vegas last year. She sings Georgia on My Mind by Ray Charles. Sharon notices the increased confidence and personality. Piers thinks she’s a much better singer now, though he doesn’t know whether she’s good enough to win. Hoff still thinks she’s got a ways to go.

America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 7

Last week we saw opera singer Barbara Padilla on America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 6. Tonight the audtions continue.

Government contractor Jeffrey Widom is always humming. It appears he’s singing. Okay, so this is apparently a song by Mr. Bean. And I trust this guy with my tax dollars?

Tallan Noble Latz, age 9, is a guitar player. He’s picked up this talent on his own and has been playing for 4 years. If he wins, he’d like to have his mom quit work so he can spend more time with her. Hoff thinks he’s got a major career ahead of him. Piers’ son about the same age can just about play Three Blind Mice on a good day. Sharon says he’s got the soul and the right vibe.

Retired barber Tony Ferrante, 74 has always dreamed of making it on stage. He dances disco. If he were younger, he’d get more buzzers than just Piers, but he’ll get passed through because they’re inspired by someone his age pulling this off. Sharon was very entertained. Piers doesn’t think this is the next great act in America. Hoff felt like dancing. Unsurprisingly, Tony gets two votes, enough to go to Vegas. Then he calls Piers a little bitch.

Kelli Glover auditioned for American Idol Season 1, where America’s vote cut her after she made the top 32. She’s taken a break for 6 years, but I’m assuming she’s going to have a very strong voice, although I can’t say I remember her from before. She sings Beyonce’s Listen. Hoff thinks girls from Jersey rock. Piers is not sure she’s likely to win the show, but she’s good enough to move on to Vegas.

Pop group the Badd Girls say they’re really good girls. Their music has to be a dance track. They want to get the people in the club moving. They’ll be moving alright. Right out the door. Bad vocals, bad dancing, and a lot less hot than they think they are. Hoff found them to be like cats being squeezed.

Cy, Cheetah, and Boone (really?) are the Platt brothers, who grew up without television, which led them to create their talent. They are a variety act trained in dance, gymnastics, and theater. Piers thinks they’ve got all the tools, but now they’ve got to go away and really think about what their next move is when they go to Vegas.

A group of postal workers from Richmond, VA formed a group by accident one day at work. They are the Spiritual Harmonizers, ages 21-76, and they sing Boyz II Men’s It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday. Hoff thought that was awesome. Piers is normally bored by these kinds of acts but really enjoyed the lead singer.

America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 6

Last night on America’s Got Talent Season 4 Episode 5 we saw singers Bri and Lawrence Beaman.

Hasselhoff is wearing a cowboy hat because they’re in Texas. It doesn’t work.

Speaking of cowboys, the Texas Tenors are there to sing. They formed a group because they heard America’s Got Talent was coming to town. They’ve been together for three whole months. Between the three of them, they have one real job. They sing Mountain Music by Alabama. Good considering they’re a new group, but there’s no risk of them winning. Hoff thought they did a very good job. Sharon can see it’s very raw. Piers is pleasantly surprised.

Bruce Thomas says he’s a musician. He believes he’s the only one in the world who does what he does, which usually means it should stay that way. He makes harmonious sounds with his hands. Well, that was stupid.

Acrodunk is a group of acrobatic slam dunkers. Although their families want them to get real jobs, they believe they can make a living doing this instead. Hasselhoff says they’re by far the best dunkers. Piers enjoyed the energy and fantastic dunking. The unfortunate reality for Acrodunk is that they won’t win. They are repeat performers on America’s Got Talent who were here on season 1 but eliminated by the viewers’ vote.

Eleisha Miller is an 8 year old singer and keyboard player. She sings and plays Proud Mary. The keyboard playing’s better than the singing. Hoff says the singing needs a little work. Eleisha agrees. Sharon says no, but the other two judges let her through despite their reservations.

Jamar and Lamar Jefferson are R&B act Timez 2. We get two for the price of one. Nick expects a train wreck or brilliant. It’s closer to the former than the latter, but it’s probably enough to continue. Hasselhoff likes their raw talent and energy. Piers says they were quite good. Sharon wants them to spend more time working on their vocals than their grinding. Hoff says yes. Piers says no. Sharon says yes to put them through to the next round.

Unlike American Idol, there’s no age restriction, which is good news for 75 year old Grandma Lee (so is that a real name or like a nickname?). She’s a comedian. Sharon loves the material and the timing. Piers says she may be his favorite contestant season, to which she responds he’s cute and she’d do him.

Stay-at-home mom Barbara Padilla is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. She’s dusting off her lifelong dream to be a singer. Every year an opera singer comes along and blows people away, and here’s this year’s example. Her singing has given her inspiration to fight through cancer, and now her new dream comes true as she sails through to Vegas.
