American Idol Season 11 Episode 35

Skylar Laine found herself on the losing end of the audience vote in American Idol Season 11 Episode 34. Tonight the top 4 perform. For 2 damn hours. We start off with California songs. Whatever that means.

Phillip Phillips
Song: Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Jennifer: Joe kind of Cocker quality that I haven’t heard before.
Randy: Started a little rough, but then you were right on the money.
Numbers: 1-866-IDOLS-01 or 1-866-IDOLS-05

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Faithfully by Journey
Randy: Peaking at the right time.
Jennifer: Been waiting to see that from you.
Steven: Over the top choice of song.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-02 or 1-866-IDOLS-06

Joshua Ledet
Song: You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban
Jennifer: Great performance. Loved the drama.
Randy: So excited to see what you do.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-03 or 1-866-IDOLS-07

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Steal Away by Etta James
Jennifer: One of the best in such a long time.
Steven: Nailed that. Showed the other side of your voice.
Randy: Amazing again.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-04 or 1-866-IDOLS-08

I still don’t know what this California Dreamin’ theme was supposed to be about. I expected some Beach Boys, but I guess not. Next we move on to “Songs you wish you wrote.”

Before we get to that, Phillip and Joshua sing This Love by Maroon 5, without anyone trying to embrace anyone. Then the girls do a duet of Eternal Flame by The Bangles. Why are they swinging? As with last week, the girls are a lot stronger singers. And we keep dragging out the night with I’ve Been Waiting for a Girl Like You by Foreigner, an awkward combination of all four singers. I’m about ready to run of things to fast forward.

Phillip Phillips
Song: Volcano by Damien Rice
Steven: Heard the musician that time.
Jennifer: One of the most beautiful, poignant moments.
Randy: One of your best performances of the season.

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: I Can’t Make You Love me by Bonnie Raitt
Steven: Fell a little short.
Jennifer: Emotion got the better of you.
Randy: Didn’t give you a moment. Nowhere to go.

Joshua Ledet
Song: It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World by James Brown
Steven: Never heard anything that good in my life. My life. (Okay, judges, tone it down. We got the hint who your favorite is a long time. You’re running the risk of doing more harm than good.)
Randy: One of the best performances in the history of any show.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going by Jennifer Holliday
Steven: Another winning performance.
Jennifer: Just let out so much. A real moment.
Randy: In it to really win it.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 34

The top 5 performed in American Idol Season 11 Episode 33. Tonight 1 more will be sent home.

Unlike last week, this one’s a tough call. Any of them could easily go. I imagine we’ll see Hollie in the bottom for a fifth time as she approaches Elise’s record. In spite of being the judges’ shameless new favorite, the best singer 42 year old Jennifer Lopez has seen in 50 years, Josh could easily join her. Even frontrunner Phil could finally end up in the bottom (and after last night deserves to).

Joshua is up first. He is safe.

Hollie Cavanagh and Phillip Phillips are next. Hollie is in the bottom two again. Phil’s legion of fans carry him through a mediocre night.

That leaves us with Jessica Sanchez and Skylar Laine. Jessica is safe. Skylar is in the bottom two.

So now we have a fight for survival between Hollie and Skylar. Skylar has been eliminated, as Hollie escapes yet again.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 33

Elise Testone was finally eliminated in American Idol Season 11 Episode 32. Tonight the top 5 perform songs from the 60s and then Brit pop.

Why the bloody hell is this show still 2 hours long? Seriously, Fox, is your schedule that thin?

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: River Deep Mountain High by Tina Turner
Steven: Really heard you step out and use your blues.
Jennifer: Nice to see you surrounded by a bigger production. Could feel you attacking the song.
Randy: I loved it, too.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-01 or 1-866-IDOLS-06

Phillip Phillips
Song: The Letter by The Box Tops
Randy: Made it new for me.
Jennifer: Lacked melody, but compelling to watch.
Steven: Missed the melody, but you get away with it.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-02 or 1-866-IDOLS-07

Skylar Laine
Song: Fortunate Son by Credence Clearwater Revival
Jennifer: You give us all this energy.
Steven: You love music, and music loves you.
Randy: Born to be on stage.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-03 or 1-866-IDOLS-08

Then Joshua and Phillip sing You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling. Wait. What?

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Proud Mary by Tina & Ike Turner
Jennifer: So grown up there. Love seeing you move.
Randy: Okay. Barely okay. Your voice pulled it out for you.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-04 or 1-866-IDOLS-09

Joshua Ledet
Song: Ain’t Too Proud to Beg by The Temptations
Steven: One of the top two best idols of all time. (So he’s better than Kelly? Or Carrie?)
Jennifer: So sick.
Randy: Could make a record like this and bring R&B back.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-05 or 1-866-IDOLS-10

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis
Steven: Nailed it.
Jennifer: Very beautiful and intimate.
Randy: 2 for 2. Unbelievable. Peaking at the right time.

Phillip Phillips
Song: Time of the Season by The Zombies
Randy: He really can sing the melody. Nice.
Jennifer: Really suited your style.
Steven: Sang it well.

The girls perform Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher. Way better than the boys.

Skylar Laine
Song: You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield
Skylar: Peaking at the right time. Flawless.
Jennifer: You wanna win, don’t you?
Steven: Brought it into the 21st century so well.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker
Steven: What a great singer you are.
Jennifer: Reminded me of when you sang I Will Always Love You.
Randy: In the top of the leaderboard. So pro.

Joshua Ledet
Song: To Love Somebody by Bee Gees
Randy: What it’s really all about. One of the best singers ever on this show.
Jennifer: One of the best singers I’ve seen in 50 years.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 32

The top 6 performed in American Idol Season 11 Episode 31. Tonight 1 more will be sent home.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and start off by saying that Elise is in the bottom three.

Jessica Sanchez and Elise Testone are up first. Jessica is safe. For the sixth time, Elise is in the bottom three.

Joshua Ledet and Hollie Cavanagh are up next. This could go either way. Hollie returns to the bottom three as Joshua is safe.

That brings us down to Phillip Phillips and Skylar Laine. I’m not sure I get the P2 appeal, but I know it’s there. Phil is safe. Skylar is in the bottom three.

All ladies head to the bottom three of Skylar, Elise, and Hollie. As with the last time she was in the bottom, Skylar is promptly sent back to safety.

Neither Elise nor Hollie are strangers to this position. Elise has been eliminated.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 31

Seemingly out of left field, Colton Dixon was eliminated in American Idol Season 11 Episode 30. That means that this week we should be able to rest easy without any lectures about having made the wrong decision, as the judges will be too busy giving standing ovations to their favorites. As long as Randy can force Jennifer to stand up with him, while the role of lemming is brought to us by Steven Tyler. Tonight the top 6 perform Queen songs. Seriously, why is this still 2 hours?

First we start with a group sing that I can fast forward. I take it there will be many more moments like that tonight.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Bohemian Rhapsody
Steven: Freddie Mercury would have been proud to hear that. Rock isn’t your forte.
Jennifer: Needed more rock performance.
Randy: Great restraint.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-01 or 1-866-IDOLS-07

Sklyar Laine
Song: The Show Must Go On
Steven: Over the top. Fabulous.
Jennifer: Goosies. Powerful.
Randy: Incredible. Phenomenal.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-02 or 1-866-IDOLS-08

Joshua Ledet
Song: Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Randy starts the standing ovation for Joshua, and the other two reluctantly follow, as usual)
Randy: Four checks.
Jennifer: Is it bad for me to say that the Joshua part of the show is my favorite?
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-03 or 1-866-IDOLS-09

Elise Testone
Song: I Want It All
Steven: Found your stride.
Randy: Unbelievable as well. So right for you.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-04 or 1-866-IDOLS-10

Phillip Phillips
Song: Fat Bottomed Girls
Steven: Love watching you sing.
Jennifer: Different side of you every week.
Randy: Liked it. Didn’t love it.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-05 or 1-866-IDOLS-11

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Save Me
Steven: Really good job.
Jennifer: Want to see you enjoy it more. Still feel like you’re thinking.
Randy: Good performance. Could take more chances.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-06 or 1-866-IDOLS-12

Jennifer thinks Skylar won round 1. Randy thinks Hollie has to step it up. Round 2 will have the contestants choosing their own songs.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Dance with My Father by Luther Vandross
Jessica: May have been the best I’ve ever heard that song.
Steven: Don’t think you could sing a song bad.

Skylar Laine
Song: Tattoos on This Town by Jason Aldean
Randy: Ginormous fan. You are fearless.
Steven: Kind of missed the flare.

Joshua Ledet
Song: Ready for Love by India Arie (and another standing ovation… okay, we get it already)
Randy: So spot on.
Steven: Smell the finish line.

Elise Testone
Song: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix
Steven: Gotta do songs that people know.
Jennifer: Slayed that song so hard that it didn’t matter nobody knows it.
Randy: Not the right song. Boxing with the song.

Phillip Phillips
Song: The Stone by Dave Matthews Band
Steven: Very entertaining, very off the wall.
Jennifer: Obscure, too artsy.
Randy: Showed your true colors again.

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: The Climb by Miley Cyrus (finally someone else gets a standing ovation)
Randy: Hollie is back.
Jennifer: That was stepping it up.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of American Idol Season 11 Episode 32, which airs Thursday at 8/7c on Fox.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 30

The top 7 performed again in American Idol Season 11 Episode 29. Tonight 1 more will be sent home. I can’t wait for more lectures from the judges shamelessly defending their favorites that America does not favor nearly as much.

Hollie Cavanagh and Joshua Ledet are up first. Both could easily end up in the bottom. Joshua is safe. Hollie is the first person in the bottom three.

Sklyar Laine and Elise Testone are the next pair. I assume Elise returns to the bottom three for the fifth time. She does. Skylar is safe.

The last group of the night is Colton Dixon, Phillip Phillips, and Jessica Sanchez. Interesting trio, though I can’t imagine any of them actually going. Jessica should be safe after last week, but then again, Colton and Phil have been frontrunners for some time. Between his performance and talking about how he doesn’t care what the judges say, we may be seeing the beginning of Colton’s decline, though. Jessica is safe. Phil is also safe. Colton joins the bottom three.

The bottom three is Elise (again, again), Hollie (again), and Colton (a first). Somehow, Elise escapes yet again. Does she need to be in the bottom 9 times before being killed off?

Colton has been eliminated. Wow. I guess 214,000 Twitter followers isn’t enough to overcome a weird performance and a cocky comment that you know is a cocky comment.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 29

After the judges lectured America for getting it wrong, Jessica Sanchez was eliminated in American Idol Season 11 Episode 28. Then Jessica was saved, and more lecturing ensued. Tonight the top 7 perform for an unnecessarily long 2 hours, again. The theme: then and now. Because apparently we need to see two songs from each of them. At least that means no group sings, though it does potentially mean 14 standing ovations.

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Rolling in the Deep by Adele (I still don’t understand why this song is so popular)
Steven: Finally came out of your shell. Perfect.
Jennifer: You did it.
Randy: Close to perfect.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-01

Colton Dixon
Song: Bad Romance by Lady GaGa
Randy: Just at a Colton Dixon concert. Parts a bit low for you.
Steven: Keep taking chances and doing what you’re doing.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-02

Elise Testone
Song: No One by Alicia Keys
Jennifer: First goosies of the night. Would love to see you smile more when you’re singing.
Steven: You have a voice for a better chorus.
Randy: Stayed with the melody for a change.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-03

Phillip Phillips
Song: You Got It Bad by Usher
Steven: I feel like a chump here.
Jennifer: So sexy.
Randy: A true artist.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-04

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Fallin by Alicia Keys
Steven: You released passion.
Jennifer: Crazy.
Randy: America got it wrong, in case you missed it the first 500 times it’s been said.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-05

Skylar Laine
Song: Born This Way by Lady GaGa (country version)
Jennifer: A more perfect song for you does not exist.
Steven: Giving the other girls a run for their money.
Randy: So beyond ready.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-06

Joshua Ledet
Song: I Believe by Fantasia (really?)
Randy: By the way, America got it wrong.
Jennifer: Leave it all on the stage every single time. (Which is why they give him a standing ovation every time, which is getting old, seeing as there are 6 other contestants that are just as good, if not better.)
Steven: You could sing the phone book.
Number: 1-866-IDOLS-07

Hollie Cavanagh
Song: Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield
Randy: Worked it out. Better than round 1.
Jennifer: Showing a new composure.

Colton Dixon
Song: September by Earth, Wind, & Fire
Steven: Your voice is a lot more powerful than that.
Jennifer: Not the perfect performance.

Elise Testone
Song: Let’s Get It on by Marvin Gaye
Jennifer: Would like to see more emotion.
Steven: Need to take it up a notch.
Randy: Not right for your voice. You’re not really sure what’s right for you. Oversang.

Phillip Phillips
Song: In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett
Randy: Exactly what you need is always what you have.
Jennifer: Spontaneous. From the soul.
Steven: Everybody loves you because of who you are.

Jessica Sanchez
Song: Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding
Jessica: Like the fact that you’re stepping out.
Jennifer: Your alter ego came out a little bit.

Sklyar Laine
Song: Heard It through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye
Randy: Every time is a party.
Steven: Like a wild horse that refuses to be tamed.

Joshua Ledet
Song: A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke (and a second standing ovation, after Randy makes Jennifer stand)
Randy: Perfect song for you.

Stay tuned to dingoRUE for another live recap of American Idol Season 11 Episode 30, which airs Thursday at 8/7c on Fox.

American Idol Season 11 Episode 28

The top 7 performed in American Idol Season 11 Episode 27. Tonight 1 more will be sent home.

Hollie Cavanagh and Jessica Sanchez are the first pair. What would the top 7 elimination be without the “form two groups and one person get in between them” process?

Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone are the second pair. Phillip joins Hollie’s group. Elise joins Jessica’s group. Did not expect Hollie and Elise to be split. Curious to see if Seacrest reshuffles the deck.

Joshua Ledet, Colton Dixon, and Skylar Laine are the last group. Seacrest asks when these judges will give Colton one of their random pointless standing ovations that makes no sense, which they have not yet done, even on that night in which they stood up after 5 songs in a row.

Joshua joins Jessica and Elise, and Colton joins Hollie and Phillip. That leaves Skylar on the couches.

Skylar is the first to return to safety. Does she want to pick a group to join? Nope. Ryan brings her to Hollie, Phillip, and Colton, who are also safe.

The bottom three is Joshua, Elise, and Jessica. A bit surprised by Jessica, but not the other two. Randy says America got it wrong. Steven says it’s so wrong they will use the save. The only one of the three that it makes sense to save is Jessica.

Joshua is the first of the three to return to safety.

Jessica Sanchez finishes in last place, but the judges use their save. I think she’ll be back to the bottom before long, but this should kick start her for a couple weeks.
