The other night we made use of a free DVD rental we had amassed at Blockbuster and took the oppertunity to pick up a copy of Kinky Boots. We’ve been trying to get the movie since it came out, but the Blockbuster near our house only got two copies of the movie for some reason and it was out everytime we went. But we got lucky and finally got a copy, yay! Now, on to the Kinky Boots Mini-Review:
Kinky Boots is a UK flick that came out late in 2005 and was just recently released on DVD. The movie is based on a true story and, from the special features included on the DVD, it seems like they actually kept the movie quite close to the true story, which is definitely a rarity now-a-days.
The Price & Sons Shoe Factory has been in business for years in Northamptonshire and has been passed down from generation to generation. In a sudden change of events, Charlie Price’s father suffers a sudden and unexpected death, forcing Charlie to follow in his dear ol’ dads foot steps, only problem is, he’s terrible with shoes and the industry is taking a huge dump. For years the Price & Son’s factory has produced well made, high quality oxford shoes but there’s no longer a market for plain, well made shoes with cheap, foreign imports flooding the market.

Charlie doesn’t know what to do, if he doesn’t think of something quick he’ll be forced to sell the factory. But it isn’t Charlie that comes up with the solution, it’s a foxy factory worker name Lauren. Only problem is, he just had to lay her off. Lauren, played by Sarah-Jane Potts, tells Charlie to step up and find a niche market to target. There’s no money in Oxford’s anymore and in order to stay in business Price & Sons will have to evolve and target a new niche market.
Charlie Price, played by Joel Edgerton, finds his niche market in the most unlikely of places, a drag queen club in London. Charlie meets Lola, a fabulous drag-queen-super-star-club-running-diva played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and the light bulb goes off after Lola snaps a heel on her 2-ft tall, gorgeous red boots of pure sex. Why not make womens boots, for men? Boots in womens styles made to support a mans weight Why not make, Kinky Boots?.
Now the goal turns from ressurecting Price & Sons to creating enough Kinky Boots in time for the Malan fashion shows. Lola becomes the new designer for Price & Sons Kinky Boots and the factory kicks it into high gear, putting in long hours and lots of hard work to design and create six unique, super sexy sets of Kinky Boots.
The road to Malan is a short one with lots of bumps, fights and even a break-up, but the factory finally churns out enough high quality 2-ft tall kinky boots of pure sex to be a success at the Malan fashion show, just one problem, there are no models to wear them and no stage act for the fashion show. When all hope is surely lost, Lola comes to the rescue, putting aside everything that’s happened, all to make Kinky Boots a success.
Kinky Boots is a great movie from start to finish. It’s full of witty british humor, drama, 2ft tall boots of pure sex, ups, downs, break-ups & make-ups, new loves & lost loves, drag shows & drag queens, runway shows & stage shows and homophobia & acceptance, what more could you possibly ask for in a movie?
I highly recommend seeing Kinky Boots it’s a fun loving movie and you’re bound to enjoy it.
