Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina Episode 10

Izak swung back to his tribe’s side in Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina Episode 9, and another tie vote resulted in the elimination of Okkert.

When they return from tribal council, Gys has a lecture for ProVerb in front of the rest of the tribe. He needs to contribute more on finding food. This attitude probably isn’t going to win him any friends, but what may work is that Gys is now the one catching the fish since Okkert is out of the way.

The reward challenge is to make fire. Let’s hope the winds have died down. They have to fill a bucket with holes to raise their fire to burn the rope. Reward is a Volvo Xc60, worth around half a million rand. Gys strikes matches almost immediately and is the first one to start his fire. Pro takes his time to get his fire ready before lighting it. He’s the last one to light his fire, but he’s confident that it’ll last, so he is the first person to head to the water. Gys and GiGi join him. Nico warns Pro that he might want to consider moving a little faster. Ashley later heads for the water as well. Sade finally joins them. Izak and Kaseran bring up the rear. GiGi seems to have run out of steam. Gys’ bucket is the first to move. Gys wins reward.

Izak in his little red speedo is drawing negative attention from the others. Sade’s a bit jealous. GiGi finds it amusing that he spends so much time posing. Ashley’s worried that Izak seems to be getting stronger and more confident as time goes by.

If Gys doesn’t get immunity, he’s the target. If he does get immunity, Ashley doesn’t have a plan.

The question becomes: if Gys does go home, what are they going to eat? In the meantime, Kaseran is catching crabs, while ProVerb will try his hand at fishing.

Apart from the remains of the hotel, there is also a prison dating back even further to the days of pirates and slavery. The immunity challenge is based on a method of torture that was used. They’ll stand with their arms raised until they drop. The first position is crouching with their hands out straight. Nico offers a chance at the hidden immunity idol. Kaseran drops out and takes it. Not long after, Izak drops out, followed by ProVerb. After 5 minutes, the four who remain move to position two, a standing position with their arms out straight. All four move to the final position, which is standing with arms raised above their heads. Gys has been struggling for a while and is the first one eliminated. This leaves the girls, as is often the case with these kind of endurance competitions. Sade is the next one to drop. After 20 minutes, GiGi is out. Ashley wins immunity.

Chibudu wants to vote for Kaseran because he doesn’t have any votes against him, a decision the girls are making at Ashley’s instructions. Gys decides to approach Izak because he’s got nothing left to lose.

Kas enlists Ashley to help him look for the idol, something which ProVerb has still not found. The clue says that the idol is under the crest, which they have since moved. He’s not too careful about his surroundings during his search because Sade sees him digging. She assumes he has found it. With that, she’d like to vote for someone else instead, ProVerb. Their other hope is to convince Izak to vote against Kaseran, making it 3-3-1, and Pro would go home.

What a weird tribal council. With 3 votes, Gys has been eliminated. His last act was to vote against ProVerb because he doesn’t want him to win, rather than hoping somebody would make a strange vote with the potential to save him. And speaking of strange votes, ProVerb threw one Izak’s way.

Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina Episode 9

With his tribe firmly in control, Izak decided to make it a tie game again in Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina Episode 8 by voting for somebody random, thereby ensuring his own tribemate Louw went home as a result of a tie. Now the tribes are even again, this time with 4 each.

When they get back to camp, Izak says that all promises he’s made are now gone. He intends to vote for Okkert at some stage. It’s a little late for that.

Kaseran’s not too heart broken that Louw is gone. It allows him to step up. This doesn’t sit too well with ProVerb, who views his attitude as if he’s trying to take over.

Izak knows that nobody should trust him, which he views as a good thing. Nobody trusting you can only get you so far. You have to have some trust, unless you can just run the table with the last few challenges. However, he does say that their alliance still stands, although it may not stand if he changes his mind. Once again, their plan is to vote out Okkert.

The reward challenge is called the knife quiz, a pecking order challenge. They will be asked questions about their fellow tribe members. If they’re in the majority, they will stick a knife in the post of someone else.

Who is the most difficult person to sleep next to?
ProVerb. Everybody except Pro gets a knife. Ashley targets Gys. GiGi goes for Pro. Gys goes for Ashley. Izak goes for his ally Kaseran. Kas hits Sade. Not to be outdone by Izak, Okkert also targets an ally, Gys. Sade goes for Izak.

Who is the most untrustworthy?
Harsh question, but the answer is obvious. Izak. Sade, ProVerb, Gys, and Gigi are correct. Despite him having saved them last night, Okkert’s the only Chibudu member to not answer Izak (I wouldn’t trust him either, though), although Pro filled in the gap. GiGi goes for Kas. Gys targets Okkert. ProVerb targets Gys. Sade hits Izak. Gys is the first person eliminated.

Which tribe member is acting or pretending the most?
Kaseran. GiGi goes for Izak. Sade gives GiGi her first. Ashley goes to Kas. Izak and Kaseran have been eliminated.

Who does the least amount of work around camp?
Izak. Ashley goes for ProVerb. Okkert stabs Sade.

Who is the most likely to stab you in the back?
Obviously, Izak. GiGi goes to Ashley. Sade goes to Okkert. ProVerb goes to GiGi. Ashley has been eliminated.

Who is the most underestimated player?
ProVerb. Okkert goes to Pro. Sade goes to GiGi. Pro gives it to Okkert. GiGi is eliminated. Okkert is also eliminated. And ProVerb joins them.

Sade wins reward. She will go for a day of pampering, and she’s allowed to take one person. She chooses Ashley. Interesting. As the first person eliminated, Gys can pick someone other than himself to go with them. He chooses GiGi so all the girls go off for some spa treatments while the boys remain behind.

Kaseran did not fail to realize the obvious. The other tribe views Izak as a lazy, untrustworthy backstabber.

Gys suggests voting for GiGi. Okkert doesn’t like this plan. He’d rather get rid of Izak, retaining the lead. Sure, that works out great for Okkert, but what does it do for Kaseran? He plans to wait until he finds out what Ashley will do because he knows she won’t stab him the back.

While they’re off on their reward, Ashley tells the other girls that she wants to join them in an alliance to the end. All they have to do for now is just vote as they otherwise would, then flip when the time’s right.

Like Izak, Okkert says he’s all alone in this game.

The immunity challenge is an elimination obstacle course. They will grab stakes, dig up bags, which they will use to hop, grab some puzzle pieces, head across the balance beams, and solve the anagram puzzle. GiGi is eliminated on the first stage. Okkert has a huge lead. Izak and Gys head to the puzzles next. Ashley is the last one to arrive at the puzzle station. This poorly planned stacking challenge is taking place in the middle of a windy storm that keeps knocking over the blocks. At least it’s not a fire building challenge. Ashley seems to be getting somewhere with the puzzle, if only she could stop the wind. Attempting another strategy, her stack crumbles again, striking her in the face and causing her to bleed. This is a really stupid challenge. Izak wins immunity.

Unable to vote for Izak, Chibudu will now be targeting ProVerb, who they say is not working.

Ashley comes to the conclusion she should have come to last week. They can count on Izak voting for Gys, but they can’t be sure about whether he’ll vote for Okkert. When she approaches Izak about this, he says that he’d feel more comfortable getting rid of Okkert.

Because the other tribe has voted for Louw every single time, nobody from Timbila has a vote against them. However, Okkert and Gys both do, so as long as Izak sticks to the plan, his tribe will regain the lead.

Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina Episode 8

The merged tribes voted to a tie in Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina Episode 7. The skull challenge sent Hanna home rather than Louw, putting Timbila back in the driver’s seat.

There are still two tribes, and it does not seem as if Chibudu will be doing anything to change it. It’s rare we see any tribe get Pagonged, so there’s always a chance. But if they just roll over, they may as well just leave now.

At their first reward challenge as a new tribe, they’re split up into teams of three. Blue: Kaseran, GiGi, and Okkert. Yellow: Ashley, Louw, and ProVerb. Red: Gys, Izak, and Sade. The game consists of three ropes, a ring, and a ball. They must use the ropes to lift the ring and carry the ball. The first team to get to the other side wins a brai. Fastest will not necessarily win. The trick is to get there first. If you drop it, you’ve gotta go all the way back. Red team drops their ball to give up their lead, allowing the blue team of Kaseran, GiGi, and Okkert to win the BBQ.

Kaseran doesn’t deny that they’re both in trouble. He says, though, that it would be exciting if one of his tribe goes off track. All he can say to them is that tonight’s going to be a toss up between Okkert, Gys, and Sade. That would mean he believes GiGi is going to be safe, presumably for quite some time.

While Kas is off eating, Izak, Ashley, and Louw discuss how they want to get rid of him eventually, taking themselves to the final three.

Everybody gets letters from their charities, an emotional reminder of what they’re competing for.

The immunity challenge is to sift through the sand using a sorter to find a slinghshot and marbles, then they need to break three plates. GiGi is the first to take a shot and miss. Izak hits his first plate. Ashley is next on the board, followed by Louw. Louw then breaks his second plate. Gys strikes his first. Ashley gets her second. ProVerb strikes his first plate. Okkert hits his first. Then ProVerb joins the leader board with his second. Kaseran is next on the board, and then he hits his second. Sade finally gets on the board, then strikes her second plate as well. Gys is the sixth person to break his second plate (Okkert and Izak have 1, while GiGi has yet to score). A lot of people have a shot. It’s just a matter of who hits that final one. Following his slow start, Kaseran wins immunity.

Ashley says that their plan is to whittle them down so that they can’t influence the end game in any way. The flaw in that theory is that two Timbilas in the final two would mean four Chibudu jury members.

Louw seems to be outdoing Okkert on the fishing front, with a catch including an octopus. Being the fisherman is a good way to stick around to the end, although Chibudu does their best to say they’re unimpressed.

Okkert is the obvious target. Izak’s going to have to get over himself on this front and make the sensible choice. GiGi and Sade pretend they’re going to vote for Okkert, too.

At tribal council, Kaseran tells the other tribe they need to start thinking of a way to change the game in their favor. They don’t take kindly to this.

We have a tie. Uh. What? Taking into account previous votes, Louw has 5 votes. Okkert has none. Louw has been voted off the island by Izak. Way to throw away the lead, dude. I hope Okkert kicks his ass in some more challenges. To be fair to him, his tribe should have just voted out Gys like he wanted to, then gotten rid of Okkert later.

The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 17

While Stefan and Damon were busy finding out they’re not the only vampires in town in The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 16, Jeremy decided he wanted to join their fun and be turned by Anna.

Anna tells Jeremy that he shouldn’t believe anything he reads about vampires. So why does he want to be a vampire anyway? Because…

Frederick’s plan is to kill everybody. Pearl suggests that maybe that’s not the best plan.

Stefan goes out for some food of the non-soccer mom vareity, and he’s promptly stabbed by Frederick, who kidnaps him and takes him back to their lair. They intend to torture him for a while before they kill him. After stabbing him a few more times, they tie him up with vervain soaked ropes. Harper disagrees with these tactics, but he’s told that Ms. Pearl is no longer in charge.

Elena and Damon go to Alaric. If he helps, the woman in charge may be able to help find his wife.

Jeremy’s come up with a reason why he wants to be a vampire. He doesn’t fit and doesn’t have anything else. That’s all he needs is an eternity like that. Anna’s response is that she doesn’t need him to do her dirty work, doesn’t want revenge, isn’t bored, and doesn’t love him. Not just yet anyway.

Pearl and Anna meet Mayor Lockwood. Maybe they will stick around at the restaurant for a while.

Damon doesn’t want to be distracted by concerns for Elena’s safety, and he insists she does not go with them.

Caroline insists on going out in the middle of a terrible rainstorm that’s washed out Route 5. She’s one of those people who, rather than pay attention to the road during potentially dangerous driving situations, hops on her cell phone to chat and get distracted. Shortly after her phone reception dies, she gets stuck in the mud.

Alaric pretends his car broke down. He’d like to use the phone. They invite him in with plans to kill him. Alaric escorts Ms. Gibbons outside to Damon. He confirms she doesn’t have any family or anyone else living there. That’s sufficient for her to die. Now it’s free for anyone to enter. This is a surprise to Alaric, who expected him to compel her, rather than snapping her neck.

As Pearl and the mayor are discussing how his family owns a lot of property, much of which they came into in 1864, she sees a boy smiling more than she’d like at her daughter. That would be a Gilbert, the people responsible for trapping her for 150 years.

Not one to follow instructions, Elena leaves the car to go check out the situation at the house. She heads to the basement, where she’s lucky Damon is there to ask her if she’s insane.

Wandering around in the downpour, Caroline slips and falls and then slips some more.

Since her mom is angry at her for hanging out with Jeremy, Anna decides she’ll turn him.

Elena and Damon free Stefan. They leave Harper tied up but alive. Then the real battle begins as Damon heads inside to kill some more vampires and confront Frederick. In the melee, Frederick flees. Damon might want to hurry because he’s after Stefan. Luckily he misses the heart (so it can be assumed) before Elena stops him.

Following their time inside killing off the vampires that are there, Damon and Alaric head outdoors, where they see more vampires than they want to deal with, so they head back inside.

Caroline shows up at Matt’s door with the sheriff. Jeremy finds out from the mayor that they’ve found Vicki, or at least her body. This death thing is news to him.

Elena’s not going to just let Stefan lie there, so she offers him her wrist.

Alaric has realized something: the part about being able to find his wife, that was just a lie. Pearl shows up in time to prevent any further bloodshed. Within the house anyway. A deranged Stefan fully charged on human blood eliminates Frederick.

Now that he knows Vicki’s not a vampire, Jeremy seems to have lost interest in turning. He just wanted to be with her.

Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains Episode 8

Coach and Jerri flipped to allow for Boston Rob to be voted out in Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains Episode 7.

Now we get to hear more about how great Russell is. Last season it was entertaining. This season it’s just getting old.

Coach complains that he did not want Boston Rob out. There was a simple solution: don’t vote against him (the cowardly move of voting for Courtney still counts as a vote against Rob). Jerri, who was the one of that pair to write Rob’s name down, says she misses Rob already.

The Heroes may have made a deal to go look for the idol together, but that doesn’t stop JT from going off on his own to search and find it. Amanda discovers him before he can move. Candice is right behind her. Since everybody will know anyway, he decides to show the rest of the tribe.

Treemail leads the Villains to assume they’re merging, to the extent that they pack up their camp and bring it with them. Are they really that desperate to move on?

The Heroes point out that it looks like the Villains have got an all girl alliance.

When Jeff greets them, he points out the very nice feast behind them. Before they move any further, he tells everybody to drop their… expectations. It’s not a merge. Both tribes have an opportunity to win this challenge (Survivor bowling). They win it, they eat. Sandra and Courtney sit out for the Villains. Probably not the smartest move if the immunity challenge is remotely physical, and Coach’s influence and desire to eat is likely to get the blame in hindsight. Parvati gets a gutter ball. Rupert scores 3. Parvati gets a second gutter ball. Heroes lead 1-0. JT knocks down 6. Danielle misses. JT stays at 6. Danielle’s gutter ball brings the Heroes to a 2-0 lead. Russell gets a gutter ball. Colby follows suit. Russell knocks over 5 pins. Colby hits just 1. Villains are behind 2-1. Coach hits 5. Amanda does the same. Coach hits 1 on his second roll. Amanda hits 2 to win reward.

The Heroes consider it a silly move to have gotten rid of Boston Rob, their best physical and mental competitor.

Jerri says that every single person on their tribe is an idiot. Oh, and voting Boston Rob out was stupid, and they’re screwed in an immunity challenge since they sat out Sandra and Courtney. As Jerri stands there whining, Sandra’s sitting right behind her, not clear why they’re blaming her for their loss.

Sandra decides she hates most of her tribe, and she suggests getting even with Coach. Russell’s the kind of person who will vote for someone who’s gunning for him. What if the rumor starts that Coach wants him out?

Russell eats this up pretty easily. He’s onboard with getting rid of Coach, which further would make it even easier for the Heroes to believe it’s a women’s alliance.

For the immunity challenge, they will be belted together in pairs, going through a muddy obstacle course to retrieve flags. Jerri and Danielle sit out for the Villains. Russell and Sandra go against Amanda and Candice. Amanda and Candice have the lead the whole time, which opens into a massive gap as the leg plays on. Heroes lead 1-0. Coach and Rupert go against each other in the one-on-one challenge. Coach is leading at the start, but Rupert passes him on the way back. In a footrace to the finish, Coach edges him out to tie it 1-1. In the final round, Parvati and Courtney go against JT and Colby. It’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen here. Heroes win immunity.

Danielle is upset. She doesn’t want people who can’t compete in challenges in the tribe. If she weren’t following Russell around like a lost puppy, she would have done something about that last week and gotten rid of Courtney instead of Boston Rob.

Coach kind of wants to vote out Russell, but he’d rather get rid of the weakest link, Courtney.

Russell would prefer to get rid of Coach. However, Danielle tries to get her point across to Russell that they should get rid of Courtney. He doesn’t want to hear a word of it and walks away.

Shortly thereafter, Russell says he’s changed his mind. Now he wants to vote out Courtney.

Jeff points out the result of voting out Tyson and Rob: the tribe has now lost 4 times in a row. They’re pretty much getting what they deserve. Whatever blame he may want to assign to Courtney, it’s not her fault. She didn’t vote them out.

American Idol Season 9 Episode 29

The top 9 performed in American Idol Season 9 Episode 28. Tonight one more will go home.

Siobhan Magnus goes to the center of the stage. Crystal Bowersox joins her. Katie Stevens joins them. Randy does not think any of them will be heading home. He is correct. They are all safe.

Lee DeWyze goes to the far side of the stage. Michael Lynche goes to the near side of the stage. Interesting because I’d have thought both of them are not in the bottom three. Casey James joins Lee. Aaron Kelly joins Mike. Tim Urban joins Lee and Casey. Andrew Garcia joins Mike and Aaron.

One group is safe. The other is the bottom three. Ellen guesses the group nearest to Seacrest. She is correct. That means that Tim Urban has finally escaped the bottom three.

Aaron Kelly returns to safety.

Of the remaining two, Andrew is safe. Michael Lynche is going to sing for his life. He’s the first boot pick with a prayer of being saved. By a unanimous decision, the judges have agreed to save him.

That means two people are going home next week.

Lost Season 6 Episode 11

Jin and Sun had their adventure in Lost Season 6 Episode 10, in which he was kidnapped and she ended up unable to speak English. Jin was brought to the package, who turned out to be Desmond.

Desmond wakes up to be greeted by Zoe. He’d like to see his wife, but instead he’s stuck with old man Widmore, who informs him he’s been brought back to the island. Violence ensues.

The crew is trying to get the generator running again, which it hasn’t done in 20 years. During the process, they inadvertently turn it on while somebody’s inside the machine. That somebody is now dead and extra crispy.

Having seen that, Widmore has a test for Desmond. He wants him to hop inside, too. His question is whether he can survive a catastrophic event again.

Flashing sideways, Desmond meets Claire at the airport. He offers her a ride, but she’s got a date with a cab driving felon. He doesn’t want a restaurant or any “companionship” when he meets up with the driver. He’s just there to work. For Charles Widmore. In this too coincidentally small world, Charles wants Desmond to get the drugged up bass guitarist of Driveshaft to his wife’s event. Charlie’s preference would be to get drunk and talk about the new love of his life, who he saw for a moment on the airplane when he was choking to death.

Charlie reluctantly agrees to go for a ride with Desmond. As they’re dirving along, Charlie grabs hold of the steering wheel, driving them directly into the water. The alert Desmond is now forced to save Charlie’s life. In doing so, he has a flash of a hand saying “Not Penny’s Boat”.

When he gets to the hospital, the CAT scan is inconclusive, so Desmond’s going downstairs for an MRI. 30 minutes in a cramped super loud machine. This should go well. And actually, it kinda does. He remembers Penny. This is the moment Charlie was talking about when he discussed being in love. He’s gotta find him. Perhaps Dr. Jack can assist. No need after all, though. Hard to miss the half naked man running down the hallway.

Since Charles is afraid of his wife, he sends Desmond to break the bad news that he’s lost the rock star. She’s taking this surprisingly well. What she doesn’t appreciate is his request to see the guest list when he hears the name Penny. He’ll need to stop looking for whatever it is he thinks he’s looking for. He’s not ready yet. For something.

As he’s getting ready to leave and/or get drunk, he’s approached by Daniel Widmore, the guy who was hoping to play with Driveshaft. Daniel, too, is going on and on about love. After he saw the women he loved at first sight, he wrote something in his notebook. Since he’s a musician, he has no clue what he wrote, but a friend of him says it’s quantum mechanics so advanced that only somebody who had been studying physics their entire life could have come up with it. What if this wasn’t supposed to be their life? What if they had some other life and somehow changed things? That said, he thinks he already did set off a nuclear bomb. Seeing as Desmond’s asking about a woman named Penny, he must have felt this shift, too.

Acting on a tip from half brother Daniel, Desmond heads to the stadium, where he finds Penny running. With that, he wakes up inside the machine. Not so dead after all. Now he says he understands that he’s there to do something important. When do they start?

Zoe is escorting Desmond through the jungle. Sayid comes up, kills some people, and tells her to run.

Back in the stadium, Desmond fainted when Penny shook his hand. Perhaps she’d like to go for a coffee.

One last thing he needs from his driver George: the manifest from the flight.

American Idol Season 9 Episode 28

Didi Benami was sent packing last time. Tonight the top 9 perform songs from two of the four Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Simon says certain songs shouldn’t be changed. Others they can. So basically they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Aaron Kelly
Song: The Long and Winding Road
Randy: Great voice, beautiful tone. Sleepy song with a bad arrangement.
Ellen: Felt like a long and winding song.
Kara: Good. Not great. Feeling like the same performance every week.
Simon: Very old fashioned. Very boring. Got to become young and relevant.

Katie Stevens
Song: Let It Be
Randy: Your best performance ever.
Ellen: Perfect example of changing it just enough to make it your own without disrespecting the song.
Kara: Never looked better and never sounded better.
Simon: Leaning in the direction which I’ve hinted at very strongly. That’s why you got it right.

Andrew Garcia
Song: Can’t Buy Me Love
Randy: Really solid performance. Sounded good, interesting arrangement, a little corny at times.
Ellen: Perfect song choice. A lot of fun.
Kara: Nothing new from you this week.
Simon: Band overpowered the whole arrangement. Corny, old fashioned, irrelevant.

Michael Lynche
Song: Eleanor Rigby
Randy: The parts that did work were great. Could be on the radio.
Ellen: Can do anything.
Kara: Fire. Amazing vocals.
Simon: The sort of thing you see and hear in musicals. Not contemporary at all. Too over the top.

Crystal Bowersox
Song: Come Together
Randy: Solid performance. Don’t know if it was your best.
Ellen: Loved the way you changed the song.
Kara: Favorite performance.
Simon: Could hear that on the radio.

Tim Urban
Song: All My Lovin
Randy: A much better performance than in the last couple weeks. A good Tim performance.
Ellen: Perfect song choice for you. Your second best performance.
Kara: Took some of the criticisms.
Simon: Did really well.

Casey James
Song: Jealous Guy
Randy: Really impressed you took this kind of leap.
Ellen: Your best performance. So soulful.
Kara: Showed vulnerability, which has been lacking in other performances.
Simon: Best performance of the night. Ginormous week on week difference.

Siobhan Magnus
Song: Across the Universe
Randy: A little sleepy but liked the whole tender side.
Ellen: Should always honor who you are. Cooled it on the high notes as suggested.
Kara: Hit the notes, showed control. Very restrained, very polite.
Simon: Much, much stronger than last week. Unpredictable.

Lee DeWyze
Song: Hey Jude
Randy: You got this. Another hot one for you.
Ellen: Loved it.
Kara: Some off moments, but it’s hot.
Simon: Wouldn’t have done that with the bagpipe player.
